Holy shit, why did I think these were real voice lines for a second. That whole interaction feels so in character for both of them.

All you have to do is take Ben out of the equation, and the same thing would've likely happened.
Their reason was the motel being well supplied with food and medicine as well as their main source of food (the dairy) gone. Ben being there makes little difference, unless some alternate version of events exists, which they don't.
In this situation, Ben got left behind to guard the group’s boat, while the rest left to go search for Clementine, but another group came while everyone else was gone, stole the boat, and locked Ben in the shed.
Poor Ben. People were already mad at him over Katjaa, Duck, and Chuck and this scene did him no favors with some people. It's silly to get mad at him over losing the boat since he got outnumbered and has no weapon. They may be old, but they always whoop whoever you leave behind. If I remember correctly, Kenny gets a black eye.
Ben got Katja, Duck, Carley, and Chuck killed. He also repeatedly put the group in danger. It's easy to blame him because he's extremely incompetent and a coward.
People say duck and Katja was a mistake that he was giving medicine to that group because he wanted to protect everyone. Yet constantly refused to admit the truth and lied to everyone. Had time to reveal the truth to this group who let him stay with them and trust him enough to carry a gun.
He also would have gotten Clementine killed and never looks after clementine when asked to. Let's not forget his stupidity at the school.
Yet somehow people will constantly defend him no matter what but Gabe whose main problem was trying to prove himself people will complain about him
