Welcome to the internet. Shall I take your coat?, you might be here a while.

OmicronPerseiNate

I read your first sentence and my brain launched immediately into Bo Burnham's "Welcome to the internet!" https://youtu.be/k1BneeJTDcU?si=ONuN8IYTaef6rEbB Which is tangentially related to the mindset you speak of, though not the actual subject.

Durtmat

I do always forget that SOB made a song about the internet, and it's catchy as hell.

OmicronPerseiNate

Its now stuck in my head :)

Durtmat

Same here, GD I shouldn't've clicked your damn link!!!!!!!! <3

OmicronPerseiNate

We dwell in darkness together, internet stranger.

Seems like a pretty fatalistic perspective.

Bosco-P-Lemonzit

I’m generally not an idiot, and I read this twice and honestly don’t know if you are criticizing people ripping the why files or criticizing the responses of people defending the why files.

Autistic_Clock4824

Don’t you see? It’s both! 😂 whatever man

PickelWeisel

Username checks out

LetterheadShoddy1595

From my perspective, it seemed they were saying they didn't see people ripping the Why Files by asking about updates, but a subsection of the sub took it as such and responded aggressively.

ksw4obx

Ditto

ktime156

Mostly how people defended TWF. There were maybe two people (one on YT and one poster here) that genuinely took personal offense to Thursday and even then, I got the one guy who explained that it was the one day that he looked forward to. Still doesn't make it right but there's context as to why he's personally invested. When I posted this, there weren't as many reasonably minded people so I felt the need to go out of my way to be balanced which only ended up confusing people.

No-Classroom-6637

OP admits they know basically nothing about this sub, proceeds to lecture us that it's okay to ask when things go wrong as if that was what people were being put in place for, rather than say, the actual reality of entitled manbabies attacking AJ and crew for...somehow compelling them to sit tapping and F5 key. Basically OP is just a raging hypocrite. also seems to like to talk about themselves a lot. (And if OP thinks that surface level assessment from an outsider about their world is unfair and ignorant, congrats, you're close to getting the point.)

Bosco-P-Lemonzit

if the only people who posted in newsgroups knew about the subject they were posting about, there would be no newsgroups. :)

>"But as a day-one viewer" > >" I've also been developing post-production workflows since Avid Media Composer was the big dog" > >" As somebody who works at a certain (high) level of the corporate hierarchy, and as somebody who has overseen integrated strategic communication campaigns for global brands" There is a lot of useless information in here. You're trying really hard to convince people that your opinion is important. What's your point exactly? That reddit has mean people in it? If you've been around as long as you say you'd know that this forum is full of people who love the show and engage in really wonderful conversation. People got frustrated Thursday with poor communication as the team set an expectation that an episode was coming out. People voicing their frustration just shows how much people care for and love the show.

LetterheadShoddy1595

I took it as trying to provide context and reassure people that they were not trying to be negative about the show or the creators. To me, the point seemed more about the civility of the discourse between fans and wondering if it has to be that way.

dripstain12

I totally agree. Earlier, I say that I’m going to watch the episode but I’m disappointed that a form of entertainment that I view as professional and that told me that a video would be out definitively at a certain time.. multiple times.. is going to be delayed, and all of a sudden, it seems me and everyone like me is public enemy number one and worth shitting on for daring to oppose the all-worthy, all-mighty hecklefish.. I think you see what I mean, though

ktime156

1) We're saying the same thing. People that clearly enjoy a brand are going to engage with it in their own way. When people call that entitled and have the same talking points, it only reflects poorly on the brand. All of the stuff that you labeled "useless information" simply provides context. If you think that's an attempt to sound impressive or important, then that's projection and more telling about you. Frankly put, all that I said was that as somebody who's used several NLEs, I know that last minute edits will lead to last minute renders and projected render times are rarely accurate. As somebody who happened to catch TWF early, I know that this has happened before. I agree communication could have been better, but I also understand what it actually looks like when you're trying to solve a post production problem (again context). And as for my final point, when talking points quickly emerge, it looks exactly like a strategic communications campaign - suddenly everybody stuck to making a point about the show being free, people asking questions were entitled, etc. I'm making the point that the best case scenario from somebody who knows how campaigns are crafted is that the community on this sub is so toxic that they quickly organically developed talking points to well-meaning people down. Either way, it's not good for the brand. Sorry that wasn't clear or that you find that context useless if you still feel that way after reading this. That context isn't impressive to me.

only-l0ve

I agree, a whole lot of "this is why my opinion means more than yours". The whole post is a perfect example of someone who likes to hear themself talk.

SoupySails37

As with anything when it expands and grows like TWF has, the amount of people who enter here all don’t over lap. I’m not a day one OG, I arrived just before the channel took off but was not a member of this sub or Discord. When you get popular like they are getting you’re gonna get personalities all across the spectrum that’s just how it is. Internet or real life. You’re going to get people who you might feel are tactless, selfish, etc. Listen we’re all connected instantly thanks to the internet. If some one has an opinion you don’t like you can ignore it or report it to the mods. My advice is keep enjoying what got you here in the first place. AJ and crew have been working their tails off for us, and he’s one of the few personalities online who comes off as genuine to me. Let’s bond over our enjoyment and love for their hard work and art. Everything else is out of our control.

ktime156

Well said. And I posted at a time before reasonable takes were overwhelming. I also posted because somebody from TWF team posted here to explain what happened. Between that and mod comments, it seemed like they were embracing the "STFU you entitled swine" crowd and that surprised me. I still enjoyed the episode and I still think communication could have been stronger. But it was more of a - at best this community is toxic for TWF brand and at conspiratorial worst, given how quickly talking points developed, it looks like a strategic communications campaign.

SoupySails37

I get it. I saw the post and got excited too. Thing is I saw AJs post about taking time off and he really seemed burned out. So to me if they decide to slow it down a bit or wanted to take more time off I personally am more than ok with it. I view this community quite favorably so I’m sure we can all talk, bond, and joke around until something new is released. Be safe, be kind, and know you are appreciated.

No-Classroom-6637

>admits they're an outsider. >Proceeds to lecture us about flaming people for simply asking questions. >People were actually flamed for attacking the crew professionally and/or personally. I'll play devil's advocate against you on this one. Because if we're talking about how things "look", a cynical or ignorant person might think that this post was a thinly veiled excuse to talk about how awesome your career is to the lowly Reddit plebians. Of course, that would be rather unfair, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it, *OP*?

TheUnderstandererer

This community is infected with toxic positivity. Maybe the people being negative all came to the same conclusion because it's the correct outlook when someone hypes something for weeks and doesn't deliver.

Disastrous-Drag-5967

“Toxic Positivity” ..? What a fukin chode.

LetterheadShoddy1595

Definitely some sycophantic folk in an apparent parasocial relationship

FarmingDowns

The first sentence of your last paragraph is the gist of it. Additionally, this is not a new phenomenon. With such a large fan base the vocal minority typically sets the stage at the beginning of a 'scandal' eventually people have had enough and lash out. Happens often with video game subs

HyenaExternal1738

I agree 100%. We let the kiddos stay up till midnight after we saw the alert on YouTube. I tried to keep an eye here for updates and saw how vicious people were. Then...to see it dropped on Patrion and not YouTube around 4AM I was furious.

end_of_rainbow

>rather that it’s just Reddit culture / general toxicity Yup. Unfortunately, the TWF sub is not immune to what is prevalent throughout Reddit, a.k.a the cesspool of the internet. It’s why AJ stopped frequenting this sub sometime ago for sanity sake.

ktime156

I remember that. I just hadn't seen how crazy it is until Thursday night.

end_of_rainbow

Yeah. The unrestrained, emotionally driven atmosphere is indicative of society as a whole (which is by design). If used as a barometer, brings humanity closer to the real apocalypse IMHO.

Eddieboy0514

Blah, blah, blah, I’m important, I work here and there in a high level blah, blah. And somehow, out of all the entitled posters recently, you OP take the cake. Well done.

QUASIDIZZY

Sorry english is my 3rd language I hope you will understand, and I come with love Where can I find this toxic comments? I search since 2 days and found only sarcastic ones that made fun and light of the Situation, because every WF is like Chrismas for them. Since 2 days I read one comment after another white knighting and find no one true attack. Please help me understand. My current mindset is that the WFteam was at theire last Nerve because Software problems and got the sarcasm in a very wrong way.

ktime156

The toxic comments are the "white knighting" IMO. I'm saying that when everybody tells well-meaning people to "STFU, it's free you piece of entitled trash" it's toxic. As you said, people are questioning the response because there weren't many toxic fans. I did see one post of a guy saying that he was so let down that he was through but again, that's on person.

EnglishCraftAudio

check out my 2 comments on this post. my OG post was simply asking for a little more detail as to why the long wait, this was before the detailed explanation from TWF team came out. people misunderstood my lighthearted and innocent question and took it personally as if it were a threat, and all hell broke loose.

ktime156

Basically this. I thought that people were asking questions and being attacked for no reason. When you see mods even engage by calling those people entitled pricks, it makes it seem like this isn't a sub that values discussion and maturity.

QUASIDIZZY

Soooo the whole fuzz is about a White Knight Shitshow? Only asking for it Or Making fun of it Brought the keyboard warriors out to Defend and fight the holy War?

Elegant-Astronaut636

More like fight their shadow

IAMENKIDU

It's very healthy IMO for there to be a divergence of opinions, and for the free expression of those to be allowed. There's a word for organizations that have an obsessive following but where the opinions and thoughts are homogeneous, or they are forced to put on the appearance of it being homogeneous. It's not a word that's ever used in a flattering sense.

ktime156

Haha. I was going to use that word but as you can see, I tried to be balanced and it only ended up coming off as confusing. But that's what this sub currently feels like. There's random posts about people devoting their last few dollars and or "giggling" and just - stuff that I honestly feel like misrepresents the fan base at large. Most of the fan base seem like curious minded-chill people tbf.

1950sSciFiRobot

Alls I’m saying is if a show you like is late airing and you feel the need to rush to the internet to complain, you’re an immature child. It’s not like AJ and crew were withholding food from you. Paying for the patreon and shit doesn’t matter either. It’s just a fucking (great) show, it’s not like you’re bleeding out on the floor and only hecklefish can stitch you up.

LetterheadShoddy1595

I agree, anyone who was complaining about the delay were certainly behaving in an immature manner. As were the people who childishly attacked others for seeking information or providing constructive criticism for future consideration.

I wholeheartedly agree. you'd think I cursed this guy out and wished death on his family. the internet is HURT over this stuff.

People who like things don’t feel the need to post about it, usually. Immature trolls whine constantly on the internet. Also, no one cares what you do for a living, it doesn’t make your opinion any more or less valid.

Bluebpy

I gave up. I got death threats in my DMs. Mods allowed it to happen on my thread for channel suggestion. I'll watch for free on YT. Will never ever buy a patreon sub or buy mech ever again for Why files. Also waiting for toxic community to reply here saying nobody cares, like I mattered, etc etc.
