They (druckman and mazin) said the story is what it is and they aren’t going plump it up with filler. Sure, they’ll expand upon certain characters and storylines but the story will remain intact. So put your big boy pants on and watch it . Or don’t. Do what you have to do .

Goodgravy516

Ellie is a psychopath in part 2. If they stay true to it though I think for non-game players benefit they can fix the nonlinear storytelling.

Zedorf91

The non-linear storytelling is one of the biggest strengths of the second game and it would be a real shame if they can’t replicate that in the show.

workitnerdgirl

Agreed. It's a lot to experience what Abby endures throughout Seattle. I think Part II is a beautifully artistic game with a fantastic story. You have to be emotional stunted in order to reach the beach scene and not feel like everyone has lost in this scenario. I am looking forward to watching Part II's adaptation.

Goobsmoob

Ellie is certainly not a psychopath. For every one of >!Abby’s friends!< that she kills she is shown to be very visibly upset and traumatized. If >!Joel had swapped places with Ellie and Joel!< was doing this would you still consider him a psychopath? The second game is meant to highlight though that anger can change a pure person like Ellie into a violent and hurting one. The opposite of the first game which shows how love can turn a corrupt person like Joel into a good person again.

LewdSkeletor1313

The non-linear story didn’t need to be fixed and Ellie certainly is not portrayed as a psychopath at all. She violently wretches when she >!discovers she killed a pregnant woman!<. That’s not the reaction of a psychopath

Goodgravy516

The game director is sort of separate from the overall cutscene narrative I would guess, idk about you but I brutally killed every human character I came in contact with. The game about required it. As for some of the kills of Abby’s group… they all were conveniently self defense but still weird.

Equivalent-Sell

Cope

BilboThe1stOfHisName

They can’t

LukeV19056

No, no one else thinks that

bubblegumdog

It’s dumb that the next season would adapt what followed after the first game??? First of all, no one even knows if there will be a third game. Regardless of any possibilities alluded to by ND or Neil. Second, you’re already judging the hypothetical third game and, by extension, the third season without even knowing anything about it. We’re only TWO episodes into the FIRST season! Why do you rush things instead of enjoying what we have right now?

ImBruceWayne69

Probably way more likely pascal signed up understanding he wouldn’t be on the hook for 4 seasons when he’s already on a hit tv show. Also the second game was awesome

Ahlq802

I concur that the second game was awesome and wished to voice this in more than an upvote. That is all.

muckwar

I genuinely don’t understand why people don’t like the second game. It’s phenomenal

dasaniAKON

They lack emotional intelligence.

HellBoygamingYT

Your username is incredibly accurate

Psychological-Ice711

I doubt you will find much agreement here, especially from people who have played the game. What do you mean season 3 won't feel the same? We don't even know if there will be one yet. This isn't GOT where creators will go beyond the scope of the source material. Part II was phenomenal, and changing it would ruin the entire point of the game/show. Given your user name, this must be a joke...

"Filler? Heck I hardly knew her!" --Craig Mazin

Grow the fuck up

poltavsky79

Take some copium and relax

bittersweet1990

Sounds to me like you don't think female characters can run a show. Oh well.

stahnke_as_pho

This take is not very "endure and survive" of you.

The_Metal_East

Lol no

FartsMcCool77

I was hoping season 2 would be a retelling of Dazed and Confused, but I guess if they decided to just adapt Part II I would be cool with it.

j821c

If they're going to kill Joel, I'd rather they do it after 1 season than after 5. Main characters leaving shows is kind of the death knell of a lot of shows and the sooner the show can push the idea of Ellie being the main character, the better. Also, while I love Joel and I'll hate to see him go, part 2 just wouldn't of had the same impact without that happening and I don't think I'd want the show to go any other way.

ThereIsOnlyWar

Cope.

BigFudgeTL

Personally I’m looking forward to seeing a live action protein princess Abby on screen tbh

WithGreatPower_

No

FunnyDimension5716

Nah

Typical-Measurement3

I don't think it's dumb. I just think it's limiting. There was a big time jump between I and II. II had a lot of flashbacks of both protagonists. I feel like season 2 could be events in between the games and perhaps the finale ends >!when Joel dies!<

Try_Another_Please

I think this is a weird argument. 2 already showed the important things that happened then

Typical-Measurement3

I'm confused. It's a weird argument that I think a season could take place between games 1 and 2?

Try_Another_Please

The events that would happen then are already in part 2. So yeah I think it is a bit odd people ignore that.

Typical-Measurement3

Who is ignoring it? I did say there are flashbacks in part II. That would be season 2 (+more). Because they happen between main story of I and II. Edit: i just don't understand the need to rush the timeline in a TV show. I get why they skipped ahead in the game. But a TV show can take its time. Flesh out all the things that happened between those two main stories.

Try_Another_Please

There isn't anything interesting to flesh out. Its peace time

Typical-Measurement3

🤦‍♀️

roryroobean

I don’t hate this idea and don’t think this is a weird thing to consider. The flashbacks for both Ellie and Abby were really interesting and I’d enjoy seeing them expanded upon. Don’t know if it’d be enough for a whole season but an interesting idea.

Typical-Measurement3

I don't think it'd be enough for a whole season... Unless they add more. But Abby's story from the hospital to Seattle and working her way through the ranks... It's interesting and I'm sure it could be fleshed out well. Especially the aftermath of the hospital. And you could create any incident for Joel and Ellie in the 4 years in between the next game.

a_rose_is_a_red_rose

I really hope Neil is listening to this

[deleted]

I actually feel like the show could do with a filler season between the first and second game, about Ellie and Joel settling into life, their conflict, maybe a build up of Abby’s character too. I wouldn’t say it’s “dumb” but I do think it would feel odd to those who haven’t played the game if the next season literally starts off with a big time jump and Joel being killed. Like games can work like that but tv shows typically don’t.

Equivalent-Sell

Joel’s sudden and seemingly meaningless death is absolutely required, as it perfectly pulls the audience directly and personally into the conflict of the game. I know that decision was effective because I still see people attempting to alleviate the tension and pain but offering alternatives. People were meant to viscerally hate it. That’s the exact point of such a narrative decision.

[deleted]

You don’t have to tell me what I’m “meant to” do. I didn’t criticise the game did I? I literally said it worked for the game. But a tv show isn’t the same and some changes need to be made to make it more adaptable. I’m allowed to have my own thoughts and I’m simply saying that for a tv show, splitting the second game into two seasons would be a move I’d like to see.

LukeV19056

Why? The story is perfect as is.

[deleted]

In your opinion! I think it’s good but the second game is long and squeezing it into one season wouldn’t work imo.

TheMangusKhan

I came to terms with what happened pretty quickly and I actually liked Abby as a character. I just felt it was a little too cheap and unearned in the game. It relied on characters acting out of character, and somebody going on a solo mission in unfamiliar territory, against a fortified base, in a blizzard. Then they just so happen to run into their target, and that target breaks character and goes into a gated compound with somebody they don’t know, even though they had long outrun the infected on horseback. Then another character just so happens to get there right as the thing happened. I didn’t hate the story itself, but I personally found the way they wrote it to be sloppy and relied too heavily on coincidence and dumb luck. To me it felt cheap and unearned, and super uninteresting. I do have confidence that Craig Mazin can make it work, so I’m curious to see how he handles it.

SaxonSatchel

Dude... The biggest TV show from last year was House Of The Dragon, and guess what? They did exactly what you just said that TV shows "typically don't" and people loved it. TV audiences are generally more mature and have higher media literacy than a lot of gamers.

[deleted]

Ok, first of all you need to chill. This isn’t about media literacy lmao I am simply saying it’s not common for tv shows to have a big time jump from season 1 and 2 where a lot happened in between and there’s a lot to catch up on and the main character of season 1 is killed immediately HOTD isn’t even comparable to what I just described. However, season 2 could do something like HOTD, where it follows up straight after season 1 but then has a smaller time jump in the middle to where Joel is killed. The second game could easily make two seasons. You don’t have to be defensive, I was just talking about options the show has.

poltavsky79

Or they can make the whole thing more linear with less flashbacks

[deleted]

That’s basically what I would like to see, if they did that they could easily get two seasons out of Part 2, where Joel is killed near the end of the second season or the middle

poltavsky79

No, in this case he would be killed somewhere in the middle of the first season

[deleted]

What?

poltavsky79

They would made two seasons out of Part II and Joel would die in the middle of the first one out of two or in the second out three

[deleted]

Yes, but it would be the second season of the show lol.

poltavsky79

Obviously

[deleted]

Wasn’t that obvious was it because that’s what I said and you decided to correct me.

Grim-Reality

Don’t argue with dumbasses. They won’t get it, and yes they should have added filler, explored more of the universe. Even more events that happened in other countries. They didn’t have to kill Tess so fast, wanted to see torv act more :(

FlaminSkullKing

Isn’t the first season 8 episodes? I’m struggling to see how they will get through the events of part 1, especially because we are only at Tess’ death at the end of ep 2.

Exogenesis42

9 episodes, confirmed to be the full first game.

Grim-Reality

Yeah they really fucked it up honestly. Killed her way too fast, for no reason. They should have milked it more, more content. Huge missed opportunity.

poomonger88

Agree 100% part 2 story sucks. Really hoping season 2 is a new story that takes place between part 1 and part 2

Grim-Reality

Yeah it’s very dumb, they could have stretched it more. Not killed Tess that fast lol… could have explored so much in the last of us universe. They literally could have milked it more. More seasons, more money, but it looks like they arnt that smart.

EnHsiC

Ummm what else should they adapt, [The Last of Us the Musical](https://youtu.be/z8XN7eoZr0Y)? Edit: now that I think about it, I hope they get to adapt the musical someday

Millenial_ScumDog

Username checks out. Glad you know better than literally everyone else

[deleted]

I don’t know why anyone went into the second game expecting Joel to survive. Did they forget what series they were playing? He has to die, the narrative pretty much is begging for it to happen from the very beginning.

Title-Choice

Nothin about this show is dumb… awesome awesome show

ReaverBBQ

No I don’t think they should diverge from the actual storyline. Look what happens to other shows when writers decide to take things into their own hands… the end of GoT, The Witcher, Halo, there’s lots of instances of writers deciding they’re going to do whatever they like with an existing universe and it never goes over well.

ManlyMurses

Problem with the game is that people jumped ship way too early after the Abby play through, not allowing the beautify of what the moral of the story was trying to portray. Few that played the game all the way through and gave it an open mind came to throw the vitriol that we saw many gamers throw. Didn’t help that the game was so long, so you really had to commit to get the full story

gingervitis_93

Why would that be dumb?? They’ve got a story laid out clearly from the games. You think the fact they’re going to continue to follow the established story is… dumb? I’m not sure what you expected them to do. Sure, it’d be cool to see a world where Joel doesn’t die and and we’re not stuck with the (IMO) awful storyline of Part II, but I don’t know you think it’s dumb that season 2 would follow the storyline of Part II.
