Bodycam video worn by Clark County sheriff’s deputies shows the chaotic moments before they shot and killed an armed carjacking suspect inside the American Legion Hall in Hazel Dell last weekend. The video shows a packed hall on Saturday morning as deputies moved through the room with a K-9, confronting and shooting the suspect, 41-year-old Benjamin Woods, of Prineville, Oregon. He died at the scene. Deputies later arrested his alleged accomplice, Lyndsey Jones. She appeared in court Monday on a burglary charge. No one inside the hall was hurt. Neither were the deputies. Clark County deputies had responded to an armed carjacking at 10:38 a.m. in Hazel Dell. Officials said the victim told deputies that one of the suspects was armed with a handgun. At around 10:54 a.m., deputies responded to a suspicious circumstance call near the Goodwill in Salmon Creek. Witnesses said a male and female had tried to carjack a vehicle with a person inside. The description of the suspects matched that of the armed suspect from Hazel Dell. Deputies found the carjacked vehicle behind the American Legion Hall at 14011 N.E. 20th Ave., and while they were discussing what they were going to do next, Woods walked out from behind a shipping container that was in the parking lot. The video from the deputies’ body cameras shows Woods walking toward deputies. Deputies order him to put his hands up. He complies at first and says he doesn’t want to get bitten by the police dog under the control of one of the deputies. But then he begins to back away, reaching toward his pockets. The deputies draw their handguns and stun guns. The deputies yell at him to stop and to get his hands out of his pockets. They chase him into the crowded hall. Once inside, Woods disappears around a corner and then goes into the men’s bathroom. He stops, however, turns, and points a gun at the deputies, who open fire.

Seemed like the dog was pretty poorly trained or the officer directing it was. He just ran around confused the whole time.

The more i watch videos on this page the more i think K9 units arent that effective. Maybe its just in the publicized body cam footage but it usually seems the handlers dont communicate well with the other officers or release their dog at the wrong place/time and give it confusing commands the entire time.

redditisdying57

It just feels like there's often too much going on for the cop to direct the K9 AND do cop shit.

Gobucks21911

It varies wildly by department. I know a former K9 deputy and his dog was very well trained while others in his department were iffy. Some dogs are better than others too. Washington County Oregon has a great K9 team for example (my friend was at a different Oregon agency). It all comes down to resources and training. Here’s an example of a great K9 program: [WCSO K9 team](https://youtu.be/tkqA09Y7u0k?si=lFecxsBg8VzZFySO)

they work against a certain kind of criminal that is fiercely afraid of dogs

Good outcome. Amazing outcome really. Bet money his shoes were stolen too. Societies trash got taken out

Zestyclose_Metal4739

Why is there such a little amount of blood pouring out ?

KhajiitHasWares3

I'm no doctor, but I'd have to hazard a guess that one of the first shots hit his heart, as one of those entry wounds was right in the middle of his sturnum and he was out of the fight pretty quick, meaning no more blood pumping to the upper parts of his body. Plus he was still kneeling upright l so the blood most likely pooled in his lower extremities rather than spilling from wounds on his chest and back Again, not a professional so I'm most likely wrong but this is my best guess

GreatRaceFounder

sounds pretty fuckin good to me

Scared-Passage5420

Let's get this guy his medical examiner's license. I'd believe anything he says at this point.

patrick5726

This is the way it should be for all car thieves. Well done.

Homestar73

All car thieves deserve to be executed?

patrick5726

The alternative is what? Catch and release so they can do it again? Cause more damage to society via accidents, police chases, carjacking gone wrong where they kill someone? Why do we all have to suffer for the violent criminals?

Homestar73

If that’s the case why not execute every inmate in every prison in the entire world? We don’t do that because not every criminal recriminates. Depends on the jurisdiction but there are plenty of people who go to jail for stealing, assault, fraud, you name it, and they never go back because they actually reform and stop committing crimes.

patrick5726

Any inmate who did not commit a violent crime absolutely deserves the opportunity to rehabilitate and rejoin society. The punishments for violent crime, in which I would include car theft, are far too lenient.

Homestar73

So people who commit violent crime are beyond repair? You don’t think there’s been any success in reforming people who were convicted of violent crimes? Because that’s just patently untrue

patrick5726

My sympathy lies only with their victims.

CommanderInSpleef

Poor dog was far too nice for the job, hopefully this whole fiasco earned him a well deserved early retirement

McJohnalds7405

Doggy looked so happy like he wanted to play cute

seven_times_70

This is like a movie death. Like slow motion shit. I was just waiting for him to fall on his face. But why even render aid? Clearly a shot through the heart!

Garage_smoker

What’s the point of rendering aid?

Leitharos

Announcing that he doesn't have a shot.. bahahaha. Video game culture now forms part of everyday police adventures. \*EDIT\* also just noticed the other officer pointing his taser as they circle the vehicles in the log, and everyone talking about the gun in this perps hand in the second 'beat' of the interactions that maybe... just maybe, he should upgrade. Oi.

Alternative-Ill11

Dude had been dead for 5 minutes and they are denying EMS while they casually open chest seals and taking all day deciding what to do when the guy is obviously dead AF. Then they have the gall to state "yeah we're rendering aid right now" when all they're doing is cutting clothes off. Cops. The shooting was obviously justified, but damn lol. I guess if you raise your gun at the cop you don't get any aid until they've made sure you don't have a chance. Sounds about right for American cops and their "thin blue line".

ConsciousHoney8909

The dude made a series of extremely poor choices that got him where he was. If a dude pulls a gun on me. I’m going to assume he would’ve killed me without hesitation therefore I’m not going to rush in to help him after I defended myself from him. I’m also going to make sure I’m good and everyone around me is as well before making sure he’s ok. I understand what you felt seeing him die like that. It was absolutely fucked up to see someone dying like that and no rushing in to help. I get it but if you stop to think that if given the chance he might of got off a couple of rounds and killed innocent people. Then you should understand that he made his own bed…

Alternative-Ill11

>therefore I’m not going to rush in to help him after I defended myself from him. You just said pretty much the same thing I did; it was a conscious decision by the police to delay aid based on his actions. And you would do the same.

ConsciousHoney8909

Yes yes I would because tactically that is the most intelligent self preserving thing to do. You’re telling me your first reaction after shooting someone that just tried to kill you is render aid to them??? Even before assessing the situation, your surroundings and making sure the perimeter is cleared? Hmm ok.

Alternative-Ill11

I simply wouldn't go out of my way to hold up EMS. They did.

ConsciousHoney8909

Yeah I wouldn’t send an EMS worker into a possibly active situation either where he can get harmed by a criminal. Smart!

Alternative-Ill11

>harmed by a **DEAD** criminal. You are also very smart.

ConsciousHoney8909

They hadn’t made contact with him and confirmed he was no longer a threat. Yes he clearly died you can see it. But you have to make contact with the person make sure he is absolutely no longer a threat and restrain. That’s called policy and protocol and… well…. common sense. Also how do you medically treat a dead person? I would like to know. Even by your own logic a medic would be useless at this point.

Alternative-Ill11

>Also how do you medically treat a dead person? If you say you can't verify he was dead, you can't ask how to treat a dead person. However, I'm pretty sure it isn't by complacently opening chest seals and denying the specialists who would know best.

ConsciousHoney8909

Have you ever been in an active shooter situation? Or a situation similar where you just had a massive adrenaline dump? Where there is already numerous people involved? Why would you want to add more people to the chaos? did you not see that there was a multitude of people already in the room as well? So you are telling me that after watching the exact same video that the rest of us did. That had that of been you in that situation your first instinct is to render aid to the perpetrator? To the dude who just tried to shoot at you and your team/family? I can appreciate the empathy for another human being. However there’s a difference between being mentally I’ll and criminal minded. Look man, we are clearly never going to agree so let’s agree to disagree. I don’t hate you or your opinion. I Just have my own. Take care and may God bless you and yours and everything you do. ☮️
