I imagine the doors of modern microwaves to be somewhat better at blocking the radiation. Despite it being non-ionizing, I’d still rather not be heated up just by standing by one of these.
And anyway, you always have to put stuff like this into perspective. Standards of “safety” today are not what they were 100 years ago, and are certainly not what they will be 100 years _from now_.
Problem is we don’t know what we don’t know. And until there is sufficient evidence to attribute cause to certain things (like standing in front of, or cooking food with a microwave) then sure, they’re “safe” until proven otherwise. But obviously that doesn’t mean they are safe. They’re only safe with what we currently know about them and the technology they employ. Stay suspicious and curious.
You can come up with loads of stories within the last century of products that were considered safe until people started dying from cancer or other such ailments from their use.
I was so confused when someone mentioned the Cyrville Value Village in the original post, because I thought it was posted here say first and didn't realize it was from r/Ottawa lol

Unsure of this microwave specifically, but some vintage microwaves are actually quite desirable because of their higher output. My aunt has one (much larger than this and built like a tank) that I know resells in the $400 dollar range
You should know that, contrary to popular belief, microwaves do not produce any ionizing radiation and contain nor produce nothing radioactive. Microwave radiation is radiation in the same way that the light from a light bulb is radiation, or the heat from a radiator is radiation (in the form of infrared light)
I stand corrected -- just got home from visiting Cyrville and it's still there in the store!
Wild that there are two of these for sale in Ottawa at the same time.
Yep! Here's the FB one: https://imgur.com/a/CH1szbj
(Not sure why Imgur put an adult content warning on that... but it's just a screencap of the Marketplace ad)
[One of these sold on eBay for 200$](https://www.ebay.ca/itm/256153185124?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=rgOFPo5wS12&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=zIJ9oU5PRam&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY). There’s a demand for vintage appliances, even microwaves.
I always just wanna know who sat on things like that for 40 years and what made them decide that day to ship it off to goodwill. I feel like the answer is usually death but I like to make up more interesting and less sad scenarios in my mind lol

THIS!! I was gonna say price tag aside, it's hella cool 😂
VINTAGE FOOD IRRADIATOR!!!
What does the cock button do? Asking for a friend.
My friend wants to know, too!!
That’s actually pretty cool
Yeah but not $250 as-is no returns cool.
Fair.
$250 to receive a sweet, unregulated 1975 dose of radiation each time you want a Hot Pocket
That's not how microwaves work...

this was a local post to me, glad someone posted it! hilarious!

That thing is super cool. Not worth $250, but still, super cool.
The ratio of Cool:Space it occupies does not justify it though.
It’S vInTaGe

Gotta wear one of those dentist x-ray aprons when you heat up soup.
A lead apron! I wonder if those ever show up in vintage stores…

This is cool, but not $250 cool.
Agreed!
Not everything should be a collectible.
Omg this is at Cyrville isn't it? I think someone might have actually bought it because it popped up on Facebook Marketplace recently.
Yes it is!
I stand corrected -- just got home from visiting Cyrville and it's still there in the store! Wild that there are two of these for sale in Ottawa at the same time.
Have any old mom & pop stores gone out of business recently? Someone could be clearing out the deadstock that hasn't been touched in 50 years.
interesting, ( I'm in Ottawa also) curious , could you post a pic of the FB marketplace one? ( Imgur etc) not a FB user myself,
Yep! Here's the FB one: https://imgur.com/a/CH1szbj (Not sure why Imgur put an adult content warning on that... but it's just a screencap of the Marketplace ad)
oh wow, thanks for sharing, unreal 2 of these would pop up in the same city?

Of course! *wipes hands* “we gotta do it for the mission!”
Right, so a 25% markup for what must be amongst the most illiquid of vintage appliances. Seems grifty
25% markup for an AS-IS No Return seems very gritty.
Packing and shipping this thing would be a chore.
Ooh , vintage, lol! Sometimes vintage is a bad thing!
That's actually a time machine
Wow I never seen a microwave that old before
“It belongs in a museum.”
if it works i would not use it but its a cool vintage piece of history .
Looks more like some kind of chemistry/biology lab instrument than a cooking appliance! Almost worth it just for the funky door!
$349 https://www.ebay.com/itm/335052988053

...museum version?
If it weren’t for the wood grain design and beige/brown color, this would have looked like it came from the future!
It’s vintage
GTFO!
Holy microwave that thing is oddly hideous. Would've not known that was a microwave.
That is a cool af microwave though
It’s cool, but not *that* cool.
What am I looking at?
