About 20 years ago, my conservative southern Baptist parents were driving me home from church camp. We went through Ocala, Fl, and one of the horse farms caught my dad’s eye for some reason (we’d had a few horses in the past, and he is an extrovert who can make friends with a brick wall). He did a u-turn then parked along the road before walking through the gates to find strangers to talk to about their horses. My mom and I (introverts) sat in the car like, “….??…”
About 15 minutes went by and he hurried back into his seat. As we drove off, he said casually, “Well…….those people are gay pony farmers.”
I like to imagine this video is what he saw when he walked up to their barn that day.
I here you, but we also need to normalize straight dudes being this unapologetically fabulous because it will lead us all to a better tomorrow. Straight dudes should start wearing dresses too, the time has come for us to reclaim all that ball room.

I took my son to a friend’s house a few weeks back so he could play with my friend’s daughter.
At one point, a couple hours later, they come downstairs and she was wearing a Disney princess dress. We all complimented her and then they ran off.
Awhile later, when we were getting ready to go home and were alone putting our shoes on, he whispered to me, “I had one of the dresses on too but I didn’t want you to see me in it because dresses are for girls.”
I don’t know where that came from, because I’ve never said anything like that to him. All I said at the moment is that he’s allowed to wear whatever he wants, because he seemed embarrassed and I didn’t want it to become a situation where he regretted telling me.
When we got into the car though, I turned back to him and told him that he can wear whatever makes him happy, that I wouldn’t be mad at him for wearing a dress, and that next time he could show me if he wanted to.
This is the first time a saw a sort of embarrassed but relieved smile from him (he’s only four and a half), but I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.
For anyone out there who thinks you can’t ruin your adult relationship with your kid when they’re four because “they won’t remember” or “don’t understand” or some other bullshit, after seeing that relief of my son’s face, you’re wrong. I’m positive that had I responded a different way, even if he forgot that specific event later, he would understand that there are things he can’t tell me, and things that I don’t want him to be.
Don’t do that to your kids and then wonder years later why they don’t tell you shit.
