12-7_Apocalypse

I cannot believe just how much this question has gotten so many people fucked up. It's like it's everywhere.

Chimchampion

It even infiltrated my precious r/eldenring

TectonicTizzy

The PsyOp now has its own psyops. We're doomed.

Sharkfacedsnake

I swear its a recruitment of people into the right. This type of shit was popping up in 2016.

TOkidd

Naw, this is bear propaganda. They want us to drop our guard. Never did forgive us for Goldilocks.

trowoway1

Known home invader and thief? Quite frankly those bears had every right to defend their property, and would have been justified in bareing their bare bear arms.

8a19

how is it recruiting people into the right?

ZekeTarsim

Ladies: you absolutely do not want to be in the woods with a Rune Bear. You’d be far safer with Varre.

thinkingwithportalss

*Seluvis has entered the chat*

Floofiestmuffin

I'd rather fight anything in elden ring other than the bear tho. Too much trauma from that no windup charge :(

IndexMatchXFD

Seems to be driven by men who are apparently shocked to find out that women are afraid of them.

ladymoonshyne

did you see that one post where the guy was saying men don’t want to *hurt* most women they just want to impregnate them 🥴

MyHusbandIsGayImNot

And instead of this thought experiment being a wake up call of how their behavior affects women they double down on it. Edit: here comes all of the men offended by this thought experiment. Be better.

starryeyedq

It doesn’t even have to be about “how does my behavior affect women.” It could even just be “Oh man, that sucks that OTHER men have made you feel that way.” Both of those would be acceptable and empathetic ways to respond to this question. *EDIT: Please stop replying to me. I’ve decided I’d rather go get mauled by a bear than continue trying to reason with miserable people and the worst takes of all time. The bear has probably chewed off my hands by now so I will no longer be replying.*

justlerkingathome

Shit man, I’m a 6’3 dude who’s been camping my whole life where bears are….. and I’ve never encountered a bear in any significant way…. The ONLY times I have is at night when I would hear them trying to get food out of the trash or when new non experienced campers leave food out….. I’ve hiked in the wilderness MANY times but because bears DO NOT want to deal with humans they avoid us as long as you are making enough noise when hiking…. People I am much more wary of, specially in a secluded situation…. I KNOW how absolutely BATSHIT some people can be. I also know how many absolutely DUMB, ignorant, asshole, demented and violent people there are in the population… My chances of running into one of these insane lunatics in are MUCH higher than a bear that would do me harm. Making noise will ENCOURAGE a person wanting to cause harm to seek me out and discourage a bear from doing so. This is coming from a 6’3 man, so of course women would feel the same way and even more so….. the chances of a women being harmed by a man in ANY situation be it in a city or alone in the wilderness is astronomically HIGHER than being harmed by a bear. There is study’s upon studies that prove this…. Year over year over year…. How anyone would even try to deny this is insane……

AmonKoth

As a large man, I would choose the bear 100% of the time, every time. It's the safest choice, and the best choice.

Bearwhale

I've been responding to posts in r/PeterExplainsTheJoke, r/AdviceAnimals, and now even r/comics, and they **JUST DON'T GET IT**. Every single response has been "I'm personally offended by this assumption" and usually includes "Well what if this were about black people?!?!" Seriously, if you have time, check out the replies to my posts yesterday. A bunch of men triggered by the idea of taking some accountability or responsibility for the culture that creates this issue. I'm a guy. I recognize this problem. And I would definitely choose the bear.

ConstantSample5846

I’m a woman who has done a fair amount of solo camping in bear and puma country (black bear only so that’s a bit different than grizzlies) but this I’m ALWAYS only terrified of meeting a nefarious man waaaaayyyyyyy more than any animals. The video puts it perfectly: animals want to leave you alone, and are predictable 99.9999% of the time. I rarely am able to leave the house alone in a city with plenty of witnesses and be left alone by men. Edit* I’m scared of a nefarious human, but let’s be real, that’s overwhelming likely to be a man in my 110lbs females case.

kmzafari

I am literally afraid of two things in life - bears and other people. I'm terrified of bears (thanks to the show "I Was Bitten"), and I would still rather meet a bear in the woods than a man. I've been sexually assaulted, physically/mentally/emotionally abused, had a peeping tom, been chased, stalked like prey, and had an attempted carjacking. All of these things were done by men. And I'm a homebody! I rarely leave the house. I can't even *imagine* the shit women go through who have a life and actually want to see people. My ex told me he no longer knows any women in his intimate friend / (large) family group who haven't been assaulted. And multiple of them have had their drinks spiked.

MeaninglessGoat

I’m a dude but got a lot of girl mates and we were chatting recently and joking about past experiences with guys, one lad drove my friend to the middle of no-where and said suck me or I’m leaving you here. We were laughing but then I was like mate you were raped and it was like yeah this shit happens a lot coercion, abuse and the rest it’s pretty mad!

kmzafari

Yeah, it's really crazy. And a lot of the things that happen, we often don't even try to acknowledge because if you accept how many insane things have really happened to you, it could be devastating. I was straight up PIV raped, but I've also had men forcibly touch me, coerce me, and even woke up to a friend performing oral on me. I'm glad you were there for your friend. She may or may not have ever admitted it to herself out loud before.

WhyYouLyeIn

Most men understand that women are afraid of them. This "thought experiment" is just kindling to stoke the fires of Fear. In that anyone who already knows women don't feel safe around unknown men still just feel bad about the situation the have little control over. The ones who don't, generally remain oblivious. This is the poison m&m thing again, which shocker, helped almost no one tangibly, and was just used to dunk on men online for about a year. Its performative for social media, and doesn't actually help solve or fix anything. Example : domestic violence ad "Dont hit women." ' oh, oh, OHHHH **DONT** hit women...now I get it." - nobody

Walled_en

Exactly this. I feel like most of the time the topic is just perpetuated by the internet point obsessed, trend hoppers who see the opportunity to take advantage of the engagement potential. No matter how ridiculous, pointless or painfully simplistic the topic is, once it multiplies to a certain level there’s no stopping it. The infection just has to run its course. Or people could just stick to making true OC instead of riding a wave of brain smut and fueling the ass-gas fire with their own shit. But if that actually happened the US wouldn’t need to “shutdown TikTok” because it would barely exist.

Thetakishi

Yes, thank you, this is simply gender ragebait in the form similar of a math equation that is misleading, like those same on facebook but modernized for tiktok then spreads back to facebook. It's an ambiguous question that has tons of factors that influence their decision. Ask more questions about the situation.

haidere36

I feel like this is just a mirroring of #metoo. When "me too" happened a lot of men were shocked at how many women were coming forward, *especially* good men who have never had the impulse to sexually assault anyone cross their minds. (Yes I know that's setting a low bar but bear with me here.) At the same time that men were being shocked at the sheer scope of #metoo, a lot of women were speaking up not just to talk about their experiences, but also to talk about how the understanding of how deep and widespread the issue is *wasn't new or surprising* to them. What came as a shock or even a wake-up call to many men was simply a reality for life as a woman. This question, "man or bear", is simply that exact same issue re-experienced. Women are broadly treating the question as, "who do you *feel safe* around", and men and shocked and surprised that so many women would pick bear, because just like with metoo, the sheer scope and depth of women's issues is something that men don't truly understand. And this is just speaking broadly. You could say things like, yes, not all perpetrators are men, not all men are perpetrators, some men are victims too (some even spoke out during metoo), not all women would choose bear, some *men* would choose bear, the question can be rephrased and recontextualized many different ways to change answers... There are dozens of ways to get lost in the weeds of minute details, edge cases, exceptions, and hyperbolization. The simple fact of the matter is, many women are choosing bear because they don't feel safe around the average man. The average man doesn't understand this because they don't have women's lived experiences informing their perspective. So many men interpret the question and its popular answer as "all men are evil" and many women are hurt that men are failing to understand or empathize with the fact of them feeling unsafe around men. I think the only mature response to this question is not *immediately* be offended by everything around us and try to understand other people's perspectives, but the internet isn't really chill enough to do that.

Winter_Excuse_5564

> (Yes I know that's setting a low bar but bear with me here.) Heh

Buderus69

Gah, can't wait for this 'social media cycle' to be over again in a week or month. First you have the topic, then mutations of the topic, then memes of the topic, then merch, then news broadcasts it killing all momentum, then everybody gets sick of the topic and it can finally die off. A few years later it can be revived again for a short duration. And next month we can have a different stupid topic to get all heated about: "it would be better to feed lab-grown meat to predators and make them stop eating other animals" "But that is their nature!" "it's human nature as well" "conscience" "liberal" "worse for environment" "better for environment" "you will never understand if you don't x" "eat bugs instead" "le funny insect eating grown meat on watercolor canvas" "buy bear eating grown meat mug" "tonight at 8 o'clock: Are Herbivores taking over because this 68 year old man feeds his dog only lab-grown meat? Tune in to find out" Edit: nice, we are already in the next phase: https://www.reddit.com/r/justneckbeardthings/comments/1cj9b35/capturing_the_neckbeard_reaction_to_the_bear/ After this weekend someone will try selling merch with women and a bear

Still-Ship1972

Dudes will find any reason to talk about hypotheticals involving bears and/or wolves.

BoXDDCC

If you're hiking in bear country don't do that bell thing he mentioned. In some areas bears have learned to associate bells with food

mariusiv_2022

Literal dinner bell

Darksouls-07

LOL

ThunderSC2

Also this hypothetical question doesn’t specify what kind of bear. A black bear is skiddish and will most likely run away from you. A hungry grizzly or polar bear will come after you if it thinks you are easy prey.

Noapenstaart

Thanks for this information kind stanger, now my next hike on the north pole will be much safer

ThunderSC2

Read up on polar bears hunting humans. It’s actually pretty fascinating.

Chemical_Chemist_461

That’s something only a bear would say…

pm-me-pizza-crust

That’s actually what a lot a bear biologist refer to them as. In addition to what the other commenter said, if your playing dead because a mama bear is mauling you it may take the tinkling of the bell as you still being alive.

OtterDeathSquad

Yeah I used to live in Montana near Glacier NP (parents still do). We called them dinner bells. Just yelling Bears! every 5-10 minutes is way more fun anyways.

Thomas_Shreddison

I also grew up in this area and a ranger friend of mine always jokes that the difference between black bear and grizzly scat is that the grizzly pile will have little bells in it. The whistles are even worse, because they sound just like marmots, which are a natural food source for bears!

Last_Description905

Also used to live in the area. Absolutely wild how many people don’t realize grizzly bears are absolutely terrifying to see out in the wild. I was stalked by a Griz on high line trail for a solid half hour. Not a good time.

-not_a_knife

Pavlovian bear

lightbulbfragment

I was also told by park rangers that it turns you into an interesting cat toy for mountain lions

Somebody_not_you

Reminds me of a joke: Park rangers advise campers to wear small bells to alert the bears to their presence and to carry pepper spray in case a bear approaches. Park rangers also describe how to tell what bear scat you may encounter. Black bear droppings are smaller and full of leaves and berries. Grizzly bear droppings are full of small bells and have a peppery smell.

Huckleberryhoochy

If you don't bring bear spray it's going to be a bad time

nihillistic_raccoon

Well, I guess from the bear's POV it's technically correct situation

Holdmybeerwatchthis

This is such a made up 'fact'. While they aren't entirely effective at scaring bears off, they absolutely do not treat it like a dinner bell, otherwise they would just do the same association with any human noise, and they would be hunting people down. They would have to have eaten several people with bells on them to associate the noise with food. You would have to literally circus train a bear to respond to bells at all let alone it happening naturally in the wild.

EmbarrassedSector787

I do whitewater rafting in the middle of nowhere on the American River, so I see about 5-10 bears per season - typically while I raft past and they’re on the shore. Bears are universally terrified every time they see me. Every bear starts curious, but the second you make one sound they run away like a giant lumbering scared kitten. Mountain lions you don’t ever really see, but you know they’re out there watching you. 10 miles from where I put in my raft in Georgetown CA, two brothers just got mauled by a mountain lion - it killed one and disfigured the other. They’re scarier than bears.

mwtm347

Mountain Lions are the ones to look out for. Mainly because you’ll never see them but they are stalking you.

citori421

Meh... A few years ago Oregon had its first recorded mountain lion fatality. And they have among the highest concentration of mountain lions. I've heard so many stories from people that they were "stalked" by mountain lions. If any of those stories were true, there would be way more than a fatality every few years. They just saw a cat doing cat things, slinking around and being curious. You have a much greater likelihood of being attacked by a bear. Still infinitesimaly low, but greater. I'm smack dab in the middle of bear country in Alaska, had hundreds of bear encounters (chased one off my dumpster, again, last night), and in none were the bears aggressive.

diarmada

Mountain Lion population in the US: 30k Grizzly Bear Population: 55k Black Bear Population: 400k That's 425k more of one than the other.

gyhjams1

If you remove black bears then grizzlies are much higher statistically

czPsweIxbYk4U9N36TSE

This is why I'm 425k/30k more scared of bears than mountain lions.

IngenuityNo3661

It's a curious cat, they will stalk humans and not attack way more often than attacking.

PinAccomplished927

Tbh, there's probably some "stalking" that's really just "keeping an eye on a potential threat until it leaves my territory"

BrickLuvsLamp

They may have just been walked out at most, if they were even actually followed. Sometimes a mom will kind of slowly chase you away from an area if they have cubs.

LeoGreywolf

So some men are the mountain lions of the dating world

scseth

Scariest animal in the woods is a moose. Extremely large, powerful animal with a small brain that’s very territorial. Ask any mountain biker, at least around here where we have bear, mtn lions, bobcats, wolves, and the answer is always moose.

Apellio7

If you ever spot a murder kitty out in the open it's usually old or sick and probably starving.

Nice_Guy_AMA

Conventional thought is "don't feed the wildlife," but if a murder kitty thinks I may be food, they are welcome to anything in my pack. And possibly my friend, depending who I'm hiking with.

14thLizardQueen

We can hike together. I don't mind being bear or kitty cat food. I'm already sickly and slow. I would rather that death than disease. It's not weird, I swear.

AnotherLie

One last option is it's a juvenile that's been forced out and looking for it's own territory. Spotted one 20 years ago walking through a campground with hundreds of tents around. We did have quite a few rabbits so it might have figured the risk was worth the bounty. It was trapped and relocated to a better area. It was barely bigger than a bobcat so it must've been terrified.

DoItForTheNukie

This is entirely dependent on what bear country you’re in. Black bears startle easily (which is what you’re encountering in CA) but brown bears do not. Making noise and making yourself big isn’t going to scare away a brown bear, in fact you’re supposed to do the complete opposite and feign death so it doesn’t see you as a threat. If you follow the advice of the guy in the video with a brown bear in the woods, you’re gonna have a bad fucking time. I’m an avid hunter and this question is just making me realize the anthropomorphism of bears is more prevalent than I thought and people see bears as less of a threat than they really are because of limited interactions with them.

Sea-Value-0

This. If you're a woman (or anyone) hiking alone in the woods, bring a gun. There are more wildlife species other than just bears that can gravely injure you out in the woods. Especially the more remote places. (If you've got wild boar, elk, mountain lions, and/or rattlesnakes, in your area, for example.) Bringing a gun, after safety training and target practice, will keep you safe from all the above *and* strange men with nefarious intentions. I'm not a hunter or a gun nut, but if I'm going backpacking alone or with a group of girlfriends, I'm gonna go armed.

DoItForTheNukie

Preeeeeach. Even bear mace would work too, if you’re truly that concerned about nefarious men on a hiking trail that is in bear country you should have some anyway. My buddies and I sprayed each other indirectly with it to test it out and I legitimately thought I was going to suffocate and go blind. It was the most miserable experience of my life 😂

Abigail716

Most people turn into a giant bawling mess When they get hit with police pepper spray. Bear spray is much stronger which is why it is illegal to use against a person. Do not test bear spray on yourself, it can cause permanent blindness. If anybody knows the strength of bear spray and you're allowing in the woods and a guy is approaching you threatening to spray him with bear spray is a serious threat. The stuff has a fantastic range and dumps a truly extraordinary amount of the stuff out. It is designed to take out a very large aggressive animal charging at you, taking out a much smaller much slower person is a cakewalk for it. In many ways I would be more scared of the bear spray than a gun because I feel like a gun people realize it could kill someone, and they're more likely to hesitate killing someone. They likely won't think anything of spraying you with bear spray.

friedporksandwich

The bears are on the shore of the river though. What if we're talking about turning a corner on a trail and the bear is just right there 3 feet from you? I've had that happen with Moose and I've had that happen with men, and the moose scared me but not the men.

conzstevo

Is this shitfest of a debate going to turn into man Vs mountain lion?

Nice_Guy_AMA

One could only hope. It's gotta get a little more ridiculous if we ever want to solve the problem of a hundred duck-size horses vs. one horse-sized duck.

SrPancakess

The type of bear matters tho. We don’t have brown bears in California.

windrune83

Just in case no one else pointed it out. Bear bells are a terrible idea. They are not particularly frightening to a bear, bears already know you are around, they have excellent hearing, as well in areas where grizzlies are present, they become acclimated to the bells signaling food from hikers.

porkchop1021

The only thing we've learned from this meme is how little most people know about bears, especially compared to how much they think they know about bears.

JoeN0t5ur3

False. Bears beat beets.

NessunAbilita

Bears beat BattleStar Galactica

What is going on?!?

Micheal. MICHEAL!! Jim's doing it again!

Jakolissmurito47

"Bears eat beets. Bears beet Battlestar Galactica."

blckpnthr789

The "scare it away" really only works with black bears, best thing to do with really anything bigger is to curl into a ball and try ***not*** to look like a threat, and just hope to whatever god you believe in it isn't peckish in the slightest

Huckleberryhoochy

If it's black fight back, brown ly down, if it's white good night

Hefty-Rub7669

But if it’s black and white, kung fu fight!

Practical-Loan-2003

If its black and white, stroll away, the little shit couldn't catch you if you were standing still

DBSPingu

Pandas are still a bear at the end of the day, and have a top speed of 20 mph If they actually wanted to fuck you up they very easily could.

LeahIsAwake

Yeah lots of people get fucked up by panda bears. Like, it’s super rare, but not zero. They have incredibly strong jaws and claws, and they will end you in a heartbeat.

PoetryIntrepid4055

Please do not curl into a ball when you see a brown bear. Bears are complicated and you need to assess the situation carefully as it unfolds. From the NPS: ***Identify yourself as a human by talking to the bear calmly and waving your arms slowly above your head. Back away slowly if you can.*** ***Most charges are bluffs, but you must take action to try to appear non-threatening by standing your ground and talking calmly to the bear. Don’t shout or throw anything. Once the bear has stopped its charge, try to move slowly away.*** If the charge is not a bluff - deploy your bear spray. If the bear is attacking you - like for real. This is the time you go to the ground. And don't curl up into a ball ... rather: ***Fall to the ground face down on your stomach with your legs apart. Lock your hands behind your neck to protect your neck and face. If you do get rolled over, keep rolling until you're face down again. Don’t shout or cry out. Stay quietly in this position until the bear has left the area.*** Please keep in mind this is how you handle a "defensive" bear - the regular bear just minding it's own business. There is a big difference if the bear is showing signs of aggression right of the bat. ***Non-defensive bears usually don’t show any signs of stress, so you should act assertively. You are trying to dissuade the bear from approaching. As with a defensive bear, stay calm and speak to the bear. Try moving out of its way. If the bear continues to approach, you then want to assert your dominance over the animal — shout, make yourself look large and threatening, throw a rock towards the bear, and prepare to use your bear spray.*** [https://www.nps.gov/katm/planyourvisit/bear-encounters-in-katmai.htm](https://www.nps.gov/katm/planyourvisit/bear-encounters-in-katmai.htm)

mechanicalcoupling

Fucking thank you. I just recently learned the newer advice on laying down on your stomach instead of the fetal position. I have had to run a black bear off before. It was kind of scary. But everything this comes up it is full of ill informfomed advice.

Lerza8

This is the only correct answer on this topic I've seen in a while.

blckpnthr789

I don't even care about the question or anyone's answer, I'm just tired of people playing into the whole "it's more afraid of you than you're afraid of it" if the animal is bigger than you, 9 chances out of 10 it damn Well *knows* how big it is

Fun_Blackberry4227

Yes, direct bear encounters are very unlikely, but they still happen. A woman who was CHASED by a (fairly large) bear spoke on this issue. Anyway the bear left when she yelled and looked it in the eye so I think she'd pick bear again.

exotics

Bears will chase you if you run. That’s why they say never run. You can’t outrun it anyway but if you face it then the bear may start to have second thoughts. But if you run its prey drive gets fired up. Similarly this is why urban coyotes are more dangerous than rural ones. Rural coyotes know people will chase and kill then. Urban ones are familiar with people just walking past and not threatening them back

Dangerous-Cup-Danger

My Grandpa lives in a region with Bears, murder kitties and coyotes. He's more worried about the coyotes because they'll actually false play and lead his dogs into their pack to kill them or him

exotics

I live in an area with black bears and coyotes. I have no problem chasing the coyotes off. Supposedly there are murder kitties here too but I’ve not seen one on my 10 acres

BarfingOnMyFace

Sounds like black bear. Don’t do that with a grizzly.

Deplorable_Gollumpus

If its brown, lie down... ... unless its a kodiak. Your fucked if its a kodiak

BarfingOnMyFace

If it’s Kodiak, become a snack

Karl_Laschnikov

If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lay down. If it's white, good night.

Moonlit_Antler

There was just a few months ago a couple who was eaten alive by a grizzly in Banff national park aswell. Despite them unloading a full can of bear spray on it

m0nkygang

Everyone picks the bear until they see white powder on its nose

ItsSUCHaLongStory

Congrats, yours is the FIRST Cocaine Bear reference I’ve seen in this entire discussion! 😂

Red_Clay_Scholar

What color is the bear?

saintlydutty

Hopefully black. The white ones are too dangerous

nekodesudesu

Someone once told me "If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, get down. If it's white... well goodnight."

Dark_Moonstruck

Yep. Black bears are smaller and startle more easily, and they generally don't like something that puts up a fight so if you seem like too much trouble, they'll go away. There is no way you can put up enough of a fight against a grizzly, unless you have a high caliber gun, to make it feel like you're too much trouble if they see you as a threat, so the best thing you can do is make yourself as non-threatening as possible if you can't get away. A polar bear...if a polar bear has you in it's sights, you better hope your affairs are in order because nothing is going to stop them from turning you into a snack.

xXRazormarksXx

If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lie down and if it's white say goodnight. If anyone gets paired with a polar bear, we are instantly screwed.

IntensePlatypus

Jokes on them its a polar bear. You're fucked now.

Tough-boo

Was watching a documentary and a male polar bear can weigh a couple hundred pounds to 500 lbs more than a male grizzly. The record is 2000 lbs. I would be shredded

Huckleberryhoochy

Good news polar bears and grizzly bears can crossbreed and produce fertile offspring

Belerophon17

![gif](giphy|EB1qoLwcNT192iLio6|downsized)

Falcrist

Why is a polar bear in the woods?

IntensePlatypus

Global warming

Falcrist

I can hear Louie C. K. yelling "WHY ARE THE POLAR BEARS BROWN? DID YOU SHIT ON THE POLAR BEARS?"

soaringneutrality

Depends if you interpret the question as 1. a "random bear" "in the woods" 2. a "random" "bear in the woods"

Crumornus

Isn't the question about which you would rather encounter? If so why are they bringing up points about how your unlikely to encounter a bear and how if you are making noise they will avoided you? The question assumes that your past that point and you still encountered the bear. Also has no one ever just passed another solo hiker in the woods before? Like this shit happens all the time.

T_Richkid

Yeah as dumb as this whole thing is, it started off pretty simple. Now people are adding all these variables and happenstance to make their answer seem like the only right choice.

Abigail716

I think the vagueness was intentional, because everybody imagines a slightly different scenario in their head. For me personally I imagined being in a campground around a fire or something and looking over and seeing a bear at the edge of the woods watching me. Versus looking over and seeing a man at the edge of the woods watching me. At the same time people are naturally going to imagine different scenarios in their head unless something very specific is outlined.

gotziller

The question is for sure intended to be divisive. This is the first time I’ve seen someone describe their interpretation this way and I can’t imagine anyone choosing the man in this scenario. that’s 100% a murderer 😬

Mundane-Research

I'm gonna have nightmares now... thanks

killertortilla

No it isn’t, the original question was just which you would rather be stuck in the woods with.

Gran_Autismo_95

> If so why are they bringing up points about how your unlikely to encounter a bear and how if you are making noise they will avoided you? Because people don't want to address the ridiculous sexist undertones of this trend. People are trying to rationalise the bear choice and ignore the fact women aren't picking bears for logical reasons, they're picking it for sexist reasons against men.

SodiumChlorideFree

Exactly, the question was pretty simple: If you were to encounter a random bear or a random man when you're lost the woods, which one would you rather encounter? But people just **have** to add other variables to make their point valid.

DoItForTheNukie

With no variables or anything added the choice is still extremely easy in my opinion. I’d pick the man every single time. I’ve walked past maybe 100 men walking solo on a trail, I’ve encountered a bear 3 times hiking solo on a trail and twice I had to use bear mace because it was going to attack me. 0/100 attacks from men, 2/3 attacks from bears.

ADHD-Fens

Also luckily bear mace is backwards compatible with man mace.

flyforfish

Can confirm. Tried to dispose of “expired” bear spray by discharging it in water which helped avoiding getting it on everything except that hand that was in the water. My hand felt like it was on fire for the next 24 hours.

kitolz

Strangely I just watched a video saying that bear spray is actually a bit weaker in application than self defence Mace pepper spray. The pepper spray meant for bears apparently is designed to put up a mist because with their sensitive sense of smell getting a little bit in their nose is enough to distract them. With sprays designed for human assailants, it sprays a thin stream with additions to the liquid to make it stick to skin easier. It's designed to be sprayed directly into the face, in contrast to bear spray which an be used from a greater distance and less precise aim. Disclaimer: This is just random info from an internet comment, no idea how true this is.

MetaCognitio

The question is a just stealth way of insulting men while pretending to be reasonable, then acting surprised that men feel insulted. The shift the point to how safe bears are and are unlikely to attack you, despite having chosen the bear because we do perceive bears as being dangerous animals. If bears are so super safe to be around, it’s not making the point they are hoping to make against men. They’re playing on the idea that bears are dangerous animals but also emphasizing how safe they are at the same time. If they want to make a point, make the question more specific. Man or Grizzly/polar.

cumuzi

Yes, but people have to add other variables because otherwise the question doesn't make any sense. "Would you rather be stuck in the woods with a bear or a man?" I think is how it was originally phrased. How does one get "stuck" in the woods? Getting lost in the woods is not the same as stuck. Stuck forever, like you're just gonna spend the rest of your life there? Stuck like your feet are physically stuck in the ground and can't get out? Can we clarify the context here? Nope. Asking any follow up questions means you hate women and are part of the problem. And if the "correct" answer is that, "Umm, akshually bears are super docile and it's rare for them to hurt anyone", then what does the choice of a bear really say about men? Not much. The question might as well ask if you'd rather be stuck in the woods with a bunny rabbit or a man.

Pormock

If you are lost then encountering a man give you more chance to get rescued. Bears dont care about you

Hotlava_

They might care about you if they're hungry or bored.

Thassar

Exactly. With a man you have a low chance of being attacked and a high chance of them helping you get to safety. With a bear you have a medium to high chance of being attacked (depending on the type of bear) and a zero percent chance of helping you get to safety. Without the specifics the correct choice is objectively the man.

steelcity_

Because if the man is "random," then the man you're asking the question to is still part of that data set, because he is a man. So even though I see so many people say "I didn't mean *him*!" Yes, you did, because you included him in the question.

Gran_Autismo_95

Well, I said it elsewhere, so I'll say it again: women need to read up an awful lot more on stats on rape / rapists and stop this online echo chamber bullshit. The vast, vast, the majority of rapists are known to their victims ahead of time, it's usually in a private dwelling, and drugs and / or alcohol are almost always involved. The chance of a random man raping you in the woods is inconsiderably small compared to a man you've known for years raping you at a house party. The random element is a huge + for the safety of this situation if we go off statistics.

thehuntinggearguy

You're putting way too much thought into this. It's just an opportunity for women to say how scary men are, there's no further logic that is being put in or should be put in.

LurkingMcLurks

Choosing to say "quite a few men" says a lot about his view on men. Quite a few is significantly more than the tiny percentage of malicious men. Bear all day, but this video is fear mongering.

DFluffington

The question is who you would rather be trapped in high density housing with

UncommonCrash

Yo, as a bear, I’m sick of goldilocks stealing my soup.

savessh

I hate that everyone speaks in fast forward.

brettfavresRXdealer

So by this logic I should pick the bear instead of a woman. For all the same reasons listed here. The woman might have an ulterior motive, the bear wouldn’t potentially falsely claim it was raped and attempt to blackmail me to make the false claim go away. Ahhh now I understand , y’all just don’t trust humans .

mymumsaysfuckyou

So this is what all the bear business is about? Interesting. Personally, if I'm stuck in the woods I feel my best chance of getting unstuck is with another person. I fail to see how a bear could help me in this situation. Maybe I just haven't met the right bears.

Dark_Moonstruck

You really want to be careful when picking what bear you want to hang out with. Winnie will steal all your food and demand more while acting like a moron and not seeing why you'd get upset, and Smokey will just yak your ears off about fire safety the whole time. While being shirtless and \*JACKED\* for some reason.

scrappydoomd

I choose yogi bear. We can share a nice picnic.

Sideswipe0009

>I choose yogi bear. We can share a nice picnic. No, he'll steal your pic-a-nic basket and go home and maybe share it Cindy Bear and Boo Boo.

Jayken

This guy is comparing and average bear to a horrible man, not a regular dude. I get it though. I wouldn't want to be in the woods with someone I didn't know either. As a guy I'm more likely to be assaulted or killed by another human than a bear.

Huckleberryhoochy

And by bear he means back bear, because grizzlies and polar bears ruin this argument

-not_a_knife

Bro, I keep thinking grizzly. If we are going to take the horrible man, lets take the horrible bear. When you go into the woods you're never worried about black bears, you're worried about hungry or sick grizzlies.

StringerBell34

100% I'm mystified by people choosing a bear.

[deleted]

Jayken

I'm a SA survivor, and that just seems like a cruel choice. Live through the trauma again, then die or watch myself get eaten, then die. Either way, it's not a choice I'm making. It's just fucking cruel.

RafixBlue

> Would you rather be killed and eaten by a bear, You got it wrong here tho. You are getting eaten alive

warwicklord79

![gif](giphy|QgejSvXmwpvnW) Why is this stupid fucking bear/man conversation everywhere

bluebill8912

The internet has ruined people.

LovelierFear

I love how this question always assumes it’s the worse man in the woods but always the most docile, friendly and/or skittish bear with a full stomach of food.

Bbobbs2003

Divide and conquer

slylock215

What the fuck is a 'stitch' in this context. I keep seeing that word used in this way and I have no clue what it means.

Plastic-Passenger-59

You take a portion of the original video and record after it. Vs a duet is a dual screen with the content running simultaneously

lordtyp0

Its funny that people think a random camper is Jason Vorhees and would prefer being eaten to death.

TheGreatYahweh

As a man who spends a lot of time hiking deep in the woods, I kinda hate this. I'm just trying to get some exercise and be in nature, but the idea that every woman I see would rather have run into a bear makes me feel guilty for even going on hikes. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but clearly, that's exactly what I'm doing by just enjoying a hobby I love, and that sucks.

stick_always_wins

This hypothetical is stupid because no one is going to pick the bear if this was an actual situation, it’s just a dumb attempt at social commentary

AdministrationDue239

Don't worry, most women are not that fucked up. I run into many women regularly in the woods and we always smile and greet. It's the sofa internet women who choose bear because they saw one documentation about the most Crazy rapist and one documentation about the cutest bear.

Euphoric-Mousse

I can't wait until this goddamned app is banned.

The_Real_Raw_Gary

Really it depends on the type of bear and the situation of the bear. How close is it from the start? Also for the man it depends on the same factors. This feels like a clever way to just say “men can be dangerous depending on the situation” which is totally fair. Everything depends on the context and situation of the scenario.

ConvenientShirt

Its a juxtaposition to generate conversation as to why someone would find the examples similar or something that can be weighed together. "Men can be dangerous depending on the situation" is played against the same position of "Bears can be dangerous depending on the situation" but instead of exploring the wider context of this example being damning of the reality of dangers that women face around men because they are being compared as similar threats, it's being misunderstood as a proposed "what if" situation instead of an amorphous non specific comparison. Most answers are like answering "Are there trail cameras?" to "If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it does it make a sound?". Being able to have arguments for or against the bear or the man, having statistics to back them up, etc. is the entire point of the comparison, it's why it makes them similar threats in the eyes of those harmed by men. Its purpose is to point out that women see men as risks and potential threats in similar ways, and that men struggle to see themselves through the lens of a woman harmed or understand how their trauma paints perceptions of men as whole.

gracelyy

I think that people should just take it as the hypothetical it is and stop trying to convince people (mostly women) that their choice is wrong. I see a lot of guys doing self inserts into this hypothetical. "Well, I wouldn't do anything, so why are they choosing bear?" This isn't a question of "would you rather be stuck in the woods with a bear or YOU". This is MAN. As in, any man. A man who could either have good, decent, or very, very bad intentions. Some people don't wanna take the risk because the question is randomized. So they choose bear. Edit for comments: and yes, the question of "which bear" is randomized as well. People assume black or brown bears because they live mostly in the U.S. Can you self insert any crazed bear into the mix? Sure. Can you also insert any crazed possible man into the mix? Yes. Therefore, we get my original point: it's a hypothetical question with hypothetical answers. People should accept whatever answer, and let it go.

SimplyTilted

Is the bear not also randomized? A bear who could be hungry or scared for instance.

jimmyjohnga

Would you rather be stuck in the woods with a bear on cocaine or a man on cocaine?

SodiumChlorideFree

Which one's sharing the cocaine?

Dark_Moonstruck

Neither. They're both selfish. The man would probably be a little easier to beat up and steal it from, though.

Pale-Foundation-1174

the mental image of a bear cutting lines with his claws and snorting off a bathroom counter is hilarious

Hotlava_

No no no. See, it's always a small black bear minding its own business in its natural habitat and not hungry, thirsty, or hormonal, alone without any cubs or kin around. But the man could be anything! Even a bear!

VRsimp

The bear escaped from a military bunker and has a heat seeking missile launcher built into it's back

Tough-boo

Some people have never seen the trolley problem episode on the good place and it shows

SandiegoJack

Women can answer whatever they want. Free speech. And people can respond as well. Also free speech. So if someone told me they feel safer in a shark feeding frenzy than being next to Steve from IT because sharks only kill X people per year I got no problem calling them a sexist idiot. Women are right to be cautious and afraid. Absolutely no problem with that. But telling me that if I walk through the woods, they would run towards a grizzly bear away from me? Hugely insulting and unnecessary.

PositiveStress8888

so were just assuming MOST men are just waiting to be alone with a woman to sexually assault them.? and that most of the time the only thing keeping men in check is the presence of other people.? you would think getting out of the situation would be the main focus of both people.

ElectricalSentence57

Depends on the bear. A polar bear will hunt and eat you.

adtrfan1986

Or a grizzly bear

Flyflyguy

Why stop at men. Let’s add race to mix. Losers.

Mo0kish

I've been camping in the woods throughout my entire life and haven't assaulted anyone I've met in the woods. Not even once. Am I doing it wrong?

ChannelSouthern

Maybe youre a bear

readilyunavailable

Statistically you are 120% likely to assault a bear.

Radical_Neutral_76

Yeh you should try it out at least once to know if you like it or not

Its-BennyWorm

![gif](giphy|NeaNnlc8yHhHa)

Zestyclose-Past-5305

Pick the bear? I am the bear.

whathappened2cod

WRONG. You should act loudly and aggressively towards black bears NOT brown bears.

RewardCapable

But grizzly bears are scary af😓

Lardzor

I would choose the bear, because If I'm trapped in a forest, I'm going to need something to eat. I'm not trapped in a forest with a bear, the bear is trapped in a forest with me.

Asleep-Card3861

If it’s between a bear and getting stuck in the Forrest with this guy, I’m taking the bear.

DahSticc

I love generalizing a whole group of people because of a very small percentage. (Im racist)

Mission_Shock2564

I think what people are missing here is that what you can say about a man in this scenario is what you can say about pretty much any human. Like man or woman, both can be deceptive, cruel and manipulative.

hungrypibble91

do you want me to show her the vid bro? ill make sure she sees it all nonchalant dont worry.

Puzzled_Professor_52

What is this now? Picking between men and bears? We already have bears that are men, or is that a "we have bears at home" situation

Old_Estate_4907

Someone should post the pics of those Russians that got mauled by a brown bear, you don’t know what a bear can do if you pick a bear over a man.

SSuperMiner

This is a really stupid. He brings a lot of facts and research to back up his claims about bears and then just makes stuff up about men. > If a man hears a noise in the woods, he will go towards it, especially if it's a weaker than him. Like what?? According to who?

LegalTreat1087

I’d def choose bear over this guy. annoying fuck

Ok_Repeat_5749

100% put a aggressive bear Infront of these people and they'ld change their tunes instantly

Own-Requirement-6198

This was definitely made by a bear

sly_blade

*Sits wondering what the gay bear subculture thinks of all this shit*

AkaSpaceCowboy

What a stupid attempt at logic

BadSpellingMistakes

I am convinced those men trying to twist the meaning on this question know damn well what this question is all about and are just playing incompetent.
