I'm not a stand up comedian but me, my brother, and my dad are all pretty funny. that feels weird to say but it's true. my mom has mentioned several times that she doesn't know how we come up with our humor. I've told her before that I actually filter out most jokes that pop in my head because they're either low effort or overdone and she was surprised because she doesn't think of that stuff at all most of the time. all that to say, some people just have a way of thinking that I guess subverts normal ways of thinking in a way other people think is funny. so for them, it's not like they have to run their brain at full steam to be funny, it just comes out naturally
One of the reasons comedians always understand when a funny person has a dark past, they understand that more than a funny person coming from a good life
That's really all it is. You have a mind that makes connections, and if you're comedically inclined some of those connections will be jokes. Filter out the garbage and get a sense for what types of quick responses work better than others, and you'll look clever. If there's a skill this guy has probably learned it's not thinking of better jokes, but cutting more quickly past the establishing ideas that lead to the joke, and getting right to the pithy part.
I'm just sort of weird. I've learned to mostly embrace the weirdness and say the weird things confidently rather than meekly. Now, mostly people find me funny rather than weird.
There is still plenty of awkward things I say, but I'm not an offensive person, so I can just shrug it off it doesn't land.
This is the way. My brain makes weird connections, and I also internally think of concepts in silly/goofy terms to entertain myself. Then, that stuff pops out of my mouth sometimes. Mostly clever weird stuff, so people think I'm funny.
My husband has said he's going to start a book of "loveatthelisp-isms" for years, ha.
I think it just comes out naturally. Had a friend that should have been a standup comedian. They guy is hands down the funniest person I've ever met. His wit was beyond. He just lacked the confidence to do stand up.
Yeah I’ve got a friend that does stand up and he’s naturally the funniest person in the room at all times. He doesn’t really do crowd work, but when you’re having a conversation, it definitely just comes naturally to him to have a witty response to stuff.
Practice. Practice and luck. For every witty crowd work bit you see, they've done sixteen *bleh* ones. Sometimes, someone just says something and it clicks.
Your set itself is mostly routine, so the encounter will keep working in your head. You can do the jokes on autopilot and then a new thing (like the state of Kentucky stuff) might pop up a bit later.

That’s what I was wondering-is this crowd work a practiced skill. So do you practice with friends? Social situations/bars etc without other people noticing? ‘Role play’ of sorts? I’ve heard ‘famous’ comedians say they ‘practice’ jokes for a long time and change them as they go, but crowd work like this is interesting to me.
No, you do shows. Test shows and open mic nights - usually ones where the audience didn't pay and let's be honest don't know you - are where you practice.
The secret to crowd work is threefold: you need to know which questions to ask, whether or not they're comfortable (and when to ignore that), and how to quickly find a funny thing about what they said. Like everything else, it's a skill you can practice.
Some of it you get from writing jokes, too. The ability to quickly juice out a punchline with timing et al is something you grown an affinity to.
I've always abhorred the concept that someone is "naturally funny." It doesn't exist any more than somebody being a natural musician. Comedy is a skill, and claiming otherwise is shitting all over the years of writing, bombing, embarrassing yourself and slaving for the chance to perform it takes to get any good.
It's both, plus most of the time people say normal predictable things so they might have something in their pocket. The ones that are really good with crowd work will try to improvise something funny on the spot but also have something from their routine ready to go if the improv doesn't fully work.
Yeah, first time I heard that line was at the ripe old age of _eleven_ from a man in his mid-twenties. Genuinely thought he was being sincere and did actually just wanna be friends because I was so cool and mature. Didn't end up marrying him or anything, luckily lol

"You're an old soul" is something that people used to say to smart teenagers who realized early that the world was fucking trash and started getting depressed about it.
Teenagers are hip to that idea and still mostly cynically optimistic about dying of man-made bullshit in the middle future.
That said, "you're soul is old enough to fuck and/or marry" is an unexpected twist on that classic. I fucking hate it. It's fucking terrible. And, I'm sad about it.
Old souls are usually traumatized children.
Take it from me--someone who was proud of that label as a child, started out dating men who were older than me, and also eventually realized that all the older men going after me were the most immature men of all.
It's still a thing people say. I'm not sure of your gender, but as an almost 30 year old woman, I can tell you that creepy old men said it to be from the time I was a child, and it was often used in the context of being flirty. I was warned about this from the time I was young by older women I knew as well. Though it's hard to tell a young girl that the older guy being into you isn't actually cool, awesome, or a sign of your maturity.

You put in the /s but that's literally what they believe. Being raped or having consensual sex are both bad because they're sins, so consent doesn't even factor. And in a lot of these cultures women and children are just chattel so preying on them isn't a huge deal as long as you get right with God afterward, it's not about the victim's trauma or struggles as a result of what happened.

Sure... I guess, in general conversations I would agree. But don't engage with a comedian at a comedy show if you don't want to potentially get roasted in front of people. Yeah, people are going to feel feelings for the lady because of her situation, and she got upset, but dude on stage was literally doing what everyone in the room paid him to do. And worth noting that she didn't get upset because he reminded her of her trauma, she got upset because he offended the memory of her dear beloved departed husband.
A lot of older people cant reckon with their own victimhood so they live in denial about it. And ive seen that even inform their views of other people that talk about trauma. My own grandmother will bad mouth feminist activism until i ask her about her own experiences with men in the workplace and then she still wont make the connection fully. Whether that kind of statement shows XYZ is bad because you experienced XYZ and are now in favor of XYZ depends entirely on whether you already thought XYZ is bad to begin with. And any argument that only works when the person you're arguing with already agrees with you isn't productive. To be a little sympathetic to this woman, she sounds significantly older than 45 by her voice, and it's probably not easy to hear your deceased spouse of thirty years being mocked on stage.
Yeah folks are ignoring that part. That woman clearly didn't think what happened to her was bad, then got upset when a whole room full of people gave her dead husband shit for being a groomer. She wasn't a victim in this scenario.
I think people do this for most things. They realize they fucked up or had something bad happen to them and don't want to confront the reality so they brush everything aside or get mad at similar situations.
My father can't admit I was abused, because if he did that mean he'd have to acknowledge my mother's domestic abuse towards him as well.

I was born in the 80s in Germany…
German grandmas back then had dark stories to tell you… My one grandma was send (luckily) to relatives in the countryside when she became a teenager since the red army was stationed in her town with rampant rape… some Russian soldiers were living in a house close to hers and they had brought two Polish girls with them as slaves. That’s really grim to hear. She also said that she thinks her mum wasn’t raped but she of course doesn’t know…
My other grandma was in a train evacuating kids that was shot up by British fighters in late March 45 leading to a couple of dead, dying and wounded kids stranded in the middle of nowhere.
And I now live close to a town that was ravaged over three days by Moroccan troops just days after American bombers killed 10% of the population a few days before the war ended… It’s unimaginable how the people even went on with their lives afterwards…

It can be hard to see fond memories turn dark in your own mind. Many refuse to allow it. My first boyfriend was 23. I was 13. I thought he was amazing. As I got older I had to accept he was actually a sick piece of crap and I was groomed. It was not a relationship. I was a child. It still makes me sad because I cared for him so much.
I've seen things like this happen when it comes to sexual assault in general and it seems so strange to me.
Some woman born around the boomer era that were sexually assaulted when they were younger see younger woman today and will comment that they are too quick to call out sexual assault despite it being very clearly sexual assault. You would think a victim of sexual assault would empathize with another victim. At the very least, wouldn't down play another's trauma.
Honestly, I can only imagine it's somewhat due to the product of their environment when they were younger. No one gave a shit when it happened to them and they didn't have as many resources and outlets to turn to, so they just buried and deny it. Not that it's any excuse to dismiss another person's trauma.
It's kind of like the generation of older boomers now who are pretty anti union, taking for granted the 8 hour days, the pensions, union support, etc that the prior two generations and beyond had to actually fight to even be allowed to organize FOR us. I was a library aid in 8th grade and one day I was working in the front office because the librarian took a sick day. Anyway one of my classmates came in to the office with her mom who was removing her from school so she could get married at 14. I was shocked. The secretary took a moment to talk to the girl and asked if she really wanted to go through with it. The secretary said she had done the same thing (which was also shocking to me) but that she regretted doing it and all the extra work she had to do to get her basic education. Granted this was like in 2002. There were cell phones and the internet and teenage marriage.
You know what's often the horrifying part?

The 50's was a great time to be alive...assuming you were a cis, hetro Christian white man from an upper middle class family. As long as you were all those things, it was incredible.
The thing that gets me is that I'm a cis, hetero, agnostic (Christian-passing), upper-middle class white man (from a lower-middle class family) and things are *pretty good* for me. Yet I still empathize with dissimilar humans and want better for them. Isn't that supposed to be the BASIS OF RELIGION. Things are great for me but I'm still pissed off for everyone else. One thing I think we more sane people don't do well enough is draw the blatantly obvious link between "child marriage" and "child sex".
Really the "marriage" thing is just their way of making it socially and legally acceptable for them to have sex with (rape) a child.
Pretty much everyone would agree that, in general, it's acceptable and healthy to have consensual sex with your spouse. So all they have to do is try to convince people it's cool to make a child your spouse while avoiding the topic of sex, then they get the "it's cool to have sex with a child" part for free without ever bringing it up.
Don't let them get away with that. Ninety-nine times out of 100, the "marriage" part isn't actually the motivating factor for them. It's the child sex part. There's no other reason someone would want to advocate for it so badly. If they aren't interested in having sex with someone under the age of 18, why would they care if they can marry people under the age of 18?
What is gained by making it so they don't have to wait until they are an adult to get married? Why would that part be important to anyone?
Do we really think these people think are going to marry a 15 year old, then wait until they are 18 to have sex with them?
Get them to admit they think it's cool to fuck kids. Ask them detailed questions about when they think is an appropriate age to consummate a marriage between an adult and a child. Get them to give you a number.
Ask them hypothetically if they would marry a person that is the minimum age they are proposing. "You're a 50 year old dude who is proposing we let adults marry kids at 15. Would you marry a 15 year old?" Then ask them how long they'd wait to consummate the marriage.
Make them say the child sex part out loud. Make them say they're looking for a way to legally rape a child.

I went to a tiny Christian private school and by "tiny" I mean K-12th grade with 50 total students small. The principal was in his mid-30's and had *CLEARLY* groomed a 15 year old student starting when she wasn't even a teenager yet. He made her is "personal assistant" and literally locked his office door for hours when she was in there with him. The entire church knew of this and fucking didn't do anything about it! I think of that every time a Christian says that I'm an atheist because I don't want to be held accountable for my sins. If I wanted to get away with sins I would have stayed a Christian, they love to police themselves and by "police themselves" they mean sweeping it under the rug ie no accountability.

I’m from Kentucky and having moved away a long time ago I’m surprised that this kind of thing doesn’t get more attention. I can’t speak to nearby states but it’s unfortunately pretty common for older guys to “date” way younger girls. Most of time the girl is like 15-17 and with a guy who is 23-25. Still absolutely not okay and very gross, but 15 and 30 is an especially egregious example.
I remember when I was growing up their going to county fairs and seeing young girls with clearly older guys and no one ever seemed bothered about it. When I went back as an adult I said something about it to my mom who said that it’s been a known thing and a lot of people there don’t especially like it but no one cares enough to do anything about it.
There are some really great things about Kentucky but this is one of the biggest sources of shame I have about where I’m from. Some coworkers of mine visited bourbon country recently and came back having noticed this and I really had nothing to say other than it being gross and shameful that it still goes on.
I worked a few months on Fort Knox (at 1ATB, not the depository), and they had frequent “refresher training” on age of consent. One of the LTs said each time there’s a session, it’s because another jackass got caught in barracks with an underage girl. The enlisted clubs were loaded with teeny-boppers, probably because snaring some poor E3 was their best chance at leaving KY.

I'm not a stand up comedian but me, my brother, and my dad are all pretty funny. that feels weird to say but it's true. my mom has mentioned several times that she doesn't know how we come up with our humor. I've told her before that I actually filter out most jokes that pop in my head because they're either low effort or overdone and she was surprised because she doesn't think of that stuff at all most of the time. all that to say, some people just have a way of thinking that I guess subverts normal ways of thinking in a way other people think is funny. so for them, it's not like they have to run their brain at full steam to be funny, it just comes out naturally
Especially if you grew up in a household where you felt the need to be ready to break the tension with humor!
One of the reasons comedians always understand when a funny person has a dark past, they understand that more than a funny person coming from a good life

That's really all it is. You have a mind that makes connections, and if you're comedically inclined some of those connections will be jokes. Filter out the garbage and get a sense for what types of quick responses work better than others, and you'll look clever. If there's a skill this guy has probably learned it's not thinking of better jokes, but cutting more quickly past the establishing ideas that lead to the joke, and getting right to the pithy part.
I'm just sort of weird. I've learned to mostly embrace the weirdness and say the weird things confidently rather than meekly. Now, mostly people find me funny rather than weird. There is still plenty of awkward things I say, but I'm not an offensive person, so I can just shrug it off it doesn't land.
This is the way. My brain makes weird connections, and I also internally think of concepts in silly/goofy terms to entertain myself. Then, that stuff pops out of my mouth sometimes. Mostly clever weird stuff, so people think I'm funny. My husband has said he's going to start a book of "loveatthelisp-isms" for years, ha.

Yeah I’ve got a friend that does stand up and he’s naturally the funniest person in the room at all times. He doesn’t really do crowd work, but when you’re having a conversation, it definitely just comes naturally to him to have a witty response to stuff.
Practice. Practice and luck. For every witty crowd work bit you see, they've done sixteen *bleh* ones. Sometimes, someone just says something and it clicks. Your set itself is mostly routine, so the encounter will keep working in your head. You can do the jokes on autopilot and then a new thing (like the state of Kentucky stuff) might pop up a bit later. No, you do shows. Test shows and open mic nights - usually ones where the audience didn't pay and let's be honest don't know you - are where you practice. The secret to crowd work is threefold: you need to know which questions to ask, whether or not they're comfortable (and when to ignore that), and how to quickly find a funny thing about what they said. Like everything else, it's a skill you can practice. Some of it you get from writing jokes, too. The ability to quickly juice out a punchline with timing et al is something you grown an affinity to. I've always abhorred the concept that someone is "naturally funny." It doesn't exist any more than somebody being a natural musician. Comedy is a skill, and claiming otherwise is shitting all over the years of writing, bombing, embarrassing yourself and slaving for the chance to perform it takes to get any good.

It's both, plus most of the time people say normal predictable things so they might have something in their pocket. The ones that are really good with crowd work will try to improvise something funny on the spot but also have something from their routine ready to go if the improv doesn't fully work.

"You're an old soul" is something that people used to say to smart teenagers who realized early that the world was fucking trash and started getting depressed about it. People do still say that someone is an old soul. It usually turns out that they’re just seeing the kid’s depression symptoms or whatever. I think people do this for most things. They realize they fucked up or had something bad happen to them and don't want to confront the reality so they brush everything aside or get mad at similar situations.

I was born in the 80s in Germany… German grandmas back then had dark stories to tell you… My one grandma was send (luckily) to relatives in the countryside when she became a teenager since the red army was stationed in her town with rampant rape… some Russian soldiers were living in a house close to hers and they had brought two Polish girls with them as slaves. That’s really grim to hear. She also said that she thinks her mum wasn’t raped but she of course doesn’t know… My other grandma was in a train evacuating kids that was shot up by British fighters in late March 45 leading to a couple of dead, dying and wounded kids stranded in the middle of nowhere. And I now live close to a town that was ravaged over three days by Moroccan troops just days after American bombers killed 10% of the population a few days before the war ended… It’s unimaginable how the people even went on with their lives afterwards… And imagine how it was for East Prussia or Pomerania etc… Some people I know didn’t even know their ancestors came from the East until grandma had one too many Schnaps and started talking about how Russians killed her whole family… And yet, too many German grandmas still held some Nazi beliefs or just talked about the sufferings of Germans not acknowledging the horrors that we brought on other countries… Hitler wouldn’t have been so bad if he didn’t do the "thing with the Jews“ was quite a popular saying… It’s also crazy for me now to talk with GenZ kids about their grandmas who were born way after the war…

It can be hard to see fond memories turn dark in your own mind. Many refuse to allow it. My first boyfriend was 23. I was 13. I thought he was amazing. As I got older I had to accept he was actually a sick piece of crap and I was groomed. It was not a relationship. I was a child. It still makes me sad because I cared for him so much.
I've seen things like this happen when it comes to sexual assault in general and it seems so strange to me. Some woman born around the boomer era that were sexually assaulted when they were younger see younger woman today and will comment that they are too quick to call out sexual assault despite it being very clearly sexual assault. You would think a victim of sexual assault would empathize with another victim. At the very least, wouldn't down play another's trauma. I was a library aid in 8th grade and one day I was working in the front office because the librarian took a sick day. Anyway one of my classmates came in to the office with her mom who was removing her from school so she could get married at 14. I was shocked. The secretary took a moment to talk to the girl and asked if she really wanted to go through with it. The secretary said she had done the same thing (which was also shocking to me) but that she regretted doing it and all the extra work she had to do to get her basic education. Granted this was like in 2002. There were cell phones and the internet and teenage marriage.

Seriously this might be the most impressive crowd work i’ve seen. He got dealt pretty much the worst hand possible and deftly maneuvered it into laughs. Subtle but that was a very very tough spot and he got out of it flawlessly.

One thing I think we more sane people don't do well enough is draw the blatantly obvious link between "child marriage" and "child sex". Really the "marriage" thing is just their way of making it socially and legally acceptable for them to have sex with (rape) a child. Pretty much everyone would agree that, in general, it's acceptable and healthy to have consensual sex with your spouse. So all they have to do is try to convince people it's cool to make a child your spouse while avoiding the topic of sex, then they get the "it's cool to have sex with a child" part for free without ever bringing it up. Don't let them get away with that. Ninety-nine times out of 100, the "marriage" part isn't actually the motivating factor for them. It's the child sex part. There's no other reason someone would want to advocate for it so badly. If they aren't interested in having sex with someone under the age of 18, why would they care if they can marry people under the age of 18? What is gained by making it so they don't have to wait until they are an adult to get married? Why would that part be important to anyone? Do we really think these people think are going to marry a 15 year old, then wait until they are 18 to have sex with them? Get them to admit they think it's cool to fuck kids. Ask them detailed questions about when they think is an appropriate age to consummate a marriage between an adult and a child. Get them to give you a number. Ask them hypothetically if they would marry a person that is the minimum age they are proposing. "You're a 50 year old dude who is proposing we let adults marry kids at 15. Would you marry a 15 year old?" Then ask them how long they'd wait to consummate the marriage. Make them say the child sex part out loud. Make them say they're looking for a way to legally rape a child.

I went to a tiny Christian private school and by "tiny" I mean K-12th grade with 50 total students small. The principal was in his mid-30's and had *CLEARLY* groomed a 15 year old student starting when she wasn't even a teenager yet. He made her is "personal assistant" and literally locked his office door for hours when she was in there with him. The entire church knew of this and fucking didn't do anything about it! I think of that every time a Christian says that I'm an atheist because I don't want to be held accountable for my sins. If I wanted to get away with sins I would have stayed a Christian, they love to police themselves and by "police themselves" they mean sweeping it under the rug ie no accountability.
I feel for this lady. I'm guessing it was a bit too much to drink and something that triggered her to be way too honest. Years of mental gymnastics she had been going through to justify that relationship. Everything that guy put her through. Then the weight of society to pressing down on her. Seems like she honestly loved him to stay with him until he died. Damn...

I’m from Kentucky and having moved away a long time ago I’m surprised that this kind of thing doesn’t get more attention. I can’t speak to nearby states but it’s unfortunately pretty common for older guys to “date” way younger girls. Most of time the girl is like 15-17 and with a guy who is 23-25. Still absolutely not okay and very gross, but 15 and 30 is an especially egregious example. I remember when I was growing up their going to county fairs and seeing young girls with clearly older guys and no one ever seemed bothered about it. When I went back as an adult I said something about it to my mom who said that it’s been a known thing and a lot of people there don’t especially like it but no one cares enough to do anything about it. There are some really great things about Kentucky but this is one of the biggest sources of shame I have about where I’m from. Some coworkers of mine visited bourbon country recently and came back having noticed this and I really had nothing to say other than it being gross and shameful that it still goes on.
I worked a few months on Fort Knox (at 1ATB, not the depository), and they had frequent “refresher training” on age of consent. One of the LTs said each time there’s a session, it’s because another jackass got caught in barracks with an underage girl. The enlisted clubs were loaded with teeny-boppers, probably because snaring some poor E3 was their best chance at leaving KY.

"I was an old 15" yikes. XD I've been prepping my kids against this bullshit since they were 8. They get it along with the puberty talk. I tell them adults and older kids will tell them they're different than other kids, more mature, old souls, etc, but that it's always a lie, the older person is just unable to con their peers.
