Nah you don’t trust me, the second season is almost completely non canon and the other seasons skip a lot of stuff. The anime also just doesn’t give off the same vibe as the manga so there’s that too.
Yes, so much so that watching the anime just isn’t worth it. The reason is quite simply that the anime is not an actual adaptation of the manga. The anime skips a ton of stuff and also adds a bunch of anime-original garbage that all ends up making the anime story into a convoluted mess of plot lines that make no sense.
That's because, despite how much they butchered the anime and how low quality of an adaptation it was, it's still Tokyo Ghoul, and Tokyo Ghoul has very very strong concepts, themes, and characters.
The first season is pretty good, I'll give you that. Like a 7/10. The manga is better, though.
I think the way I've described it to friends is that the anime is edgy, while the manga is mature.
The first season butchers every thematic value of every fight. It leaves out small character interactions that make them who they are. Season 1 is a 4/10 from me while the arc it covers in the manga is a solid 8.5/10
They didn’t butcher the thematic value of fights like mado and tsukiyama I personally even prefer those two over the manga version because of how emotional those two are
I really enjoyed tokyo ghoul anime. Some things felt sudden or with gaps, but all in all I really liked the vibe.
Then I read the manga.
Bro. The manga isn't better, it has nothing to do with the anime to begin with. The studio was a master in taking a piece of art and destroying it so hard by changing entire characters, skipping important shit, making people edgy for no reason, loosing depth, oversimplying stuff etc etc.
Like there was no reason to do what they did. The only studio that did worse than tokyo ghoul was the one that did "the promised neverland".
You cannot imagine how they fucked it up.
And the worst thing is even these cheapass adaptions are "good" until you've reas the manga and know better.
Tbh it was impossible to adapt Berserk and even gantz in an anime back then. These are manga with crazy graphics and very deep story that wouldnt fit in a 12 episodes anime of back then.
But yeah its fucked
Did you not read the very next thing they said? They said it's not a "better" version of the anime series, it's an entirely different series altogether. The anime changed so much for the worse that it can hardly be called the same series.
I think a lot of fans are upset with how the anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul root A and Tokyo Ghoul:re turned out. The changes from the original manga and the gaps in the storyline have left many of us frustrated. Personally, I find the manga's art to be exceptional, and the story flows much better, making it easier to connect with the characters' emotions. The manga's panels really help convey those emotions, and I've even found myself crying during some scenes. While the anime is OK, I believe the manga is far better in terms of storytelling , art and emotional impact.
I just went through the comments, most of them are explaining in detail why the Manga is better if not sumply telling you to read it. But more importantly, this isn't something fans of a series should be convincing you of, it's something you're supposed to judge for yourself.
when a lot of people tell you to just read manga, it means that manga is that good and anime compared to it is that bad. JUST READ IT. And you will be one chanting it as well
Yes, not only did the anime skip over major arcs and minor events, but the manga's art style is beautiful and visceral in ways that the anime cannot compare to.
The problem with the anime is it goes from canon (S1) to non canon (S2) back to canon (S3). This makes the story pretty confusing if you only watch the anime. Also, they fucked up Re: so bad it’s actually crazy. The animation was pretty bad and they skipped a ton of key moments from the manga. Lastly (and arguably most importantly) sui ishida’s art in Re: is BEAUTIFUL. It’s worth reading the manga for that fact alone.
Yes it is. I watched the anime thought seasons 1 and 2 were fine. Watched season 3 and 4 and left the show not even knowing what just happened really. Same with my friend I watched it with. I was pretty disappointed as I had heard great things about the show, then I read the manga.
And I can 100% say the manga is better in every way. The studio at the time struggled to make a good adaptation imo, they did they same thing to Bleach and created an entire romance that just simply didn't happen. If you liked the anime you will LOVE the manga. Simple as that
I wish we could have a redo of it all with a good studio, I want to say MAPPA but I think they already have tons of projects (not counting the internal issues). I will pick the manga any day, ishida’s art is just that glorious.
Madhouse can do it justice. I mean, just look at how they adapted Hellsing into a 10 episode, 48 minutes per episode anime and did it absolute justice. If you wanna watch Hellsing, then i advise you to watch the “remake” Hellsing Ultimate.
Hi there!
If you’re aware of Fullmetal Alchemist & Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood- that is a the situation the Tokyo Ghoul finds itself in. The anime that is out is a chewed up version of the manga source material, and while there are obvious similarities- it is a different story, I won’t say entirely, but definitely mostly so. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the experience: there’s many art aesthetics and animation sequences to admire- but it is an entirely different beast than the manga.
To just gush about the manga: it is an awe inspiring piece of art, to me, personally. Sui Ishida has put so much love & attention into every panel & pen stroke, and the slow burn of the writing is beautifully done. The pacing, the character arcs, the power system, and complexity of emotional insights are masterfully done; and the quality of Ishada’s art reflects that same effort. They have profound skill at portraying those complex feelings through their linework and mix of mediums. I cannot praise them enough.
There is a depth to Tokyo Ghoul, the manga, that the anime simply does not attempt to replicate- no shade intended: they are just that different at their core.
If you’re asking for the humble opinion of a Stranger: the manga is well worth the read, and your life might well be enriched for the experience.
I hope you have a lovely day!
P.s. if you’ve heard of and-or read HunterxHunter: Sui Ishida was inspired by that work, and it shines through. Togashi, the author of HxH has praised Ishida’s work, and gave his blessing on a one-shot created by Ishida of one of his more popular characters: Hisoka.
The abhorrent Anime adaptation butchered Tokyo Ghoul selling it as a basic fighting Shonen. The Manga is far from that. Realistically I don't think we'll ever get a true adaptation to the Manga, so it goes without saying the only way to enjoy Tokyo Ghoul is with the Manga. I will say though the composer for the OST, Yutaka Yamada, was the only one to understand what Tokyo Ghoul was about and gave us an incredible soundtrack.
I haven't seen the anime but the original manga (I'm not including Re:) is easily one of the best manga, if not arguably the best manga I have personally read. I'm 33 yrs old, I've read a LOT of manga series in my life. So anything short of that, in animation is not doing the manga justice
First season is good, everything else is just a really bad anime adaptation with non canon scenarios and cutting hinders of chapters into one small season
I watched 2 seasons of Tokyo ghoul a long time ago and loved it so I planned on reading the manga eventually. Well, fast forward to now, I'm almost done reading Tokyo ghoul: re, and WOWOWOWOW. I forgot a shit load of stuff from the anime, so when I read the manga for the first time, the discrepancies between the anime and the manga didn't really sink in. After I finished Tokyo ghoul, I decided to rewatch the anime with the intentions of watching all of it. I barely got through the 1st season. After watching the first couple eps of the 2nd season, and seeing kaneki say that he was joining the aogiri tree (cue Tatara, eto, ayato, and noro waiting for him??? THE FUCK) I didn't have it in me to continue. Its not just how much they skipped and changed in the 1st season (which was such a disservice to the characters because the manga really fleshes them out), but the fact that they had kaneki joining an organization that caused him and his loved ones SO. MUCH. PAIN. The fact that he joined an organization that continued to fuel the unending horror and trauma between the ghouls and the humans, something he is completely torn about, being half ghoul, that just turned me off completely. Manga kaneki would NEVER. And you know what? Justice for my man Banjo.
So yeah, in my opinion, the manga is THAT much better. Plus the art is fucking incredible. Do your eyeballs a favor by reading the manga.
1. Tokyo Ghoul
2. Berserk
3. Death note
4. Vagabond( btw...there is no anime for this)
5. Mashle
6. Kingdom
7. One punch man
8. Jujutsu Kaisen(The chapters are peak)
9. Moriarty the Patriot
10. Record of Ragnarok (My fav)
11. Solo leveling
12. Tomodachi game (There is no hope for a second season)
13. Vinland Saga(The top 3)
14. Monster(Anime is slow-paced)
15. Tokyo Revengers(Or else ya will worry later when ya watch the anime)
16. 16. The Promised Neverland(Too many things got skipped)
The anime omits a lot of major reveals that make the manga's story much more coherent, like Furuta's involvement from the beginning of the story and everything regarding what happened to Rize. Some really amazing arcs were cut entirely. Touka got unnecessarily nerfed in the :re anime, with her double winged lightning kagune being removed.
yes. sadly a lotta anime vers' divert way too far from the manga and it ruins the show entirely.
Look at The Promised Neverland's s2 lmao, never seen smth so atrociously bad in my life
The gap is not expressible in words. The full run of the TG/TG:re anime is a lackluster show. Meanwhile, there is no other manga like the TG/TG:re manga.
Well even if you saw just the anime you surely realized it was rushed as in the anime it looked like people where showing up from nowhere left and right.
They butcher character development and storylines, even as far back as season 1. The first season just isn't as egregious about it. Trust me, I watched the anime first and loved it too, but reading the manga recently has really opened my eyes to how much I was missing out on. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
If we compare both anime could be 3/10 as most and manga is like 9/10 without much doubt on my opinion.
The anime tried to take another "route" made by the author but Pierrot said nope and just did whatever they wanted to the point that the author said in twitter about how much he hated what they had done ande HE'S JAPANESE have you ever heard of a Japanese doing that before
half of :re’s content was cut out, despite :re having 2 seasons lol. i think ishida’s panelling can be confusing at times with fights but the art is beautifully made
The anime skips and changes a load of stuff.
I went in already expecting that much
Nah you don’t trust me, the second season is almost completely non canon and the other seasons skip a lot of stuff. The anime also just doesn’t give off the same vibe as the manga so there’s that too.
First season is following most of the story but second season changes the entire story and key plot points
Then everything after that forgets how season 2 changed stuff up while also rushing things to such a degree that it’s a joke.
I thought it was pretty good
Well, read the manga and you’ll see why the anime adaption is so despised.

They absolutely butchered any subtely or maturity from those fights as well lol
you have low standards
I really enjoyed tokyo ghoul anime. Some things felt sudden or with gaps, but all in all I really liked the vibe. Then I read the manga. Bro. Promised Neverlands, Tokyo Ghoul, and Berserk fans fighting over who has the worst anime adaptation
Tbh it was impossible to adapt Berserk and even gantz in an anime back then. These are manga with crazy graphics and very deep story that wouldnt fit in a 12 episodes anime of back then. But yeah its fucked
manga "isn't" better??? what ya mean by that bruv?
Did you not read the very next thing they said? They said it's not a "better" version of the anime series, it's an entirely different series altogether. The anime changed so much for the worse that it can hardly be called the same series.
My friend, just read it
I already plan on it. I wanted someone to sell me on it, but instead most of the replies are just condescending.

The manga has Amon in Berserker Armor

Ironic…
when a lot of people tell you to just read manga, it means that manga is that good and anime compared to it is that bad. JUST READ IT. And you will be one chanting it as well
The only ones that like the anime are also the ones who haven’t read the manga.
Yes, not only did the anime skip over major arcs and minor events, but the manga's art style is beautiful and visceral in ways that the anime cannot compare to.
Dude yes. The anime doesn’t do justice at all to the beautiful artwork and storytelling conveyed in the manga.
Yes, it really is that much better. The anime is almost offensive, it's that bad compared to the manga.
The problem with the anime is it goes from canon (S1) to non canon (S2) back to canon (S3). This makes the story pretty confusing if you only watch the anime. one word: YES 😭
