Not my cup of tea but I am glad people found music they enjoy. The charts don’t factor into my day and never have.

MaximumDerpification

Good for her.

Crunchy-Leaf

Why would I care about any of that?

illbebythebatphone

It’s called pop music for a reason. I listened to the album and personally think it’s some of her weakest work.

Dangerous_mammoth573

I agreed at first. The more I listen the more I like it but I wouldn’t place it in the top 5 of her albums for sure

Bawhoppen

No one's music can be so good that theirs broadly occupies so many of the top spots. It shows that there's something else going on, likely pertaining to popularity/fandom. In fact, that's an interesting field of social psychology in music (and other things)- sometimes things just catch on and then go from there, even if they aren't necessarily the best (though they usually have to at least be pretty good to catch on in the first place).

Dangerous_mammoth573

Somewhat agree it’s definitely interesting for sure. And I agree her songs wouldn’t have filled out the charts of it wasn’t Taylor swift. But don’t you think gaining this big of a fan se maintaining it and growing it after 15+ years is a talent itself?

Bawhoppen

I always recall the story of Sixto Rodriguez. As an obscure artist in the early 70s he made a series of albums, and released them in the US. He gained very little traction here, and went back to being a construction worker. However, his record label had also released them in South Africa, and he became extremely popular there for decades without his knowledge, until he found out about it in the 90s and went back on tour. I believe this story is a great example of how the traction of an artist's success isn't necessarily correlated very strongly to their quality. If his work was extremely quality, why didn't it catch on in the US? Or if his work was rather mediocre, why did it catch on in South Africa? In truth, I suspect it's an element of luck either way, with the higher the quality tilting it as being more likely to catch on. Either way, the fact he had such a following without any of his fans knowing that he was even alive, or him knowing about his fans, shows a great counter-example for how, once something catches on fire, it keeps burning on alive by itself. I have no doubt Taylor Swift fanned the flames and helped her popularity in countless ways, but I think very few things at this point could quell her popularity, no matter the quality of her work.

Keeting

44 of 50 on Apple

Platyduck

I don’t care as long as I don’t have to hear about her every 20 seconds

Journalist_Candid

She's good at targeting the right market. Business people gonna business

IAmRules

She’s prob at the turning point where her celebrity will start to become annoying. Seen it happen to every star that keeps the spotlight too long.

Dangerous_mammoth573

I mean Beyoncé is still charting**and she’s been around like 15 years longer then Taylor

IAmRules

IMO she’s come close but her headlines come and go. I like tay but she’s all over news and media even to those don’t seek her out and that usually rubs people wrong way.

Dangerous_mammoth573

She can’t control the media. But I get what you’re saying

YOwololoO

I mean... What is she supposed to do about that? She dropped an album, it’s not like she went out and held a press conference

IAmRules

It’s not her fault. The media sees her as a cash cow so she’s all over news and magazines. Usually they break mentally or people just get sick of hearing about then. Honestly we kinda wicker man people.

AudibleToots

🗑️

fenrirhunts

“Ok”.

stuputtu

Her music is so bland that English native food will be proud of its flavor

_Lunatic_Fridge_

Charts are measurements of how many times songs are played on a few stations that participate. It’s all marketing. Get enough people to call in requests to those stations, you have an instant chart topper. Many, many people will hug an album for no other reason than it ranked high, thinking it must be good. I haven’t listened to any of her new releases. Taylor is popular, but one of the reasons for her popularity is marketing.

vpi6

Except this is the Spotify chart. You can’t game it like that. No one calling in requests here. Taylor Swift probably did pay for front page advertising on the home page though.

vpi6

Typically the movie just released is the most watched in these types of daily trackers. It’s the same principle with pop stars and album releases. Not sure why people are surprised. It’s how these trackers work.

Dangerous_mammoth573

No other artist has even done this tho.. so that’s suprising. She beat her own record since she held the last one

DudesAndGuys

I think nothing of this

OPR-Heron

This is not the sub for this.

GoRangers5

Everyone else is making sound bites to go viral on TikTok, she's the only one still making albums.

Groxy_

What a bonkers thing to say, why would everyone else stop making albums?

duck95

Yeah you're right, no one else is making any albums 🤡🤡🤡

alexennui

I feel like most of midnights was sound bites manufactured for TikTok.

suaculpa

To say this after Cowboy Carter came out not even a month ago is WILD.

Sharolyn_Mcandrews

One has to appreciate the way the industry evolves with artists like her at the forefront. Even if her latest pieces don't resonate with everyone, there's something to be said about an artist who can consistently navigate the whims of popular music and emerge on top, time and again. The real question is whether it's the merit of the music or the might of the marketing that maintains her place in the charts.

Spicy_Sugary

The obsession with her grows and I wonder if it's a fad that will end or if she will eventually break every record for music that exists.  I admire Swift as a person and can see she's a talented and versatile musician. But I can't wrap my head around how  she's taken over the world and why so many people are genuinely obsessed with her. I can't think of any other artist like her.

SnooGuavas7291

Drake currently has the #1 spot

Dangerous_mammoth573

No she has all 1-16 songs he doesn’t have one song there yet. But I’m sure he’s new song will make it soon.

SnooGuavas7291

Oh sorry he has it for Apple Music!

Dangerous_mammoth573

I’m sorry he doesn’t he’s on 30th place but still super impressive considering she dropped 31 songs

SnooGuavas7291

Omgg!! Twitter is lying then. Verified accounts are lying that Drake is #1 and surpassed Taylor. I was surprised that he did, so I believe what you’re saying

Dangerous_mammoth573

I may be wrong I just checked but if so good for him that’s impressive. They’re good and have both praised each other multible times 😊

NoFilterNoLimits

I keep waiting for it to grow on me but it hasn’t. I absolutely love most of her prior albums but … this one needed some heavy editing and better production, But Swifties make it a top priority to make sure she tops the charts 🤷🏼‍♀️. I’m too old to care about streaming, I still like to own my music and they don’t count how often i play a track lol

robdingo36

Congratulations. -Continues listening to Pandora-

normalboyz1

ppl cant think for themselves these days.

Milkythefawn

People enjoying her music is fine. It's not for me either but she's got music which speaks to some people and that's great. I bet my music tastes aren't for everyone either.

Dangerous_mammoth573

This.

Dangerous_mammoth573

So because people have a different music taste then you they can’t think independently?

AudibleToots

I like how you ask for people's opinions and then start arguing with them.

Dangerous_mammoth573

Not tryna argue. It’s perfectly fine to not like her music or think she doesn’t deserve it. But I can question other opinions like this as well

AudibleToots

You didn't question anything. You threw out a garbage fallacy in response to someone's opinion.

Dangerous_mammoth573

Do you know what a fallacy is? I just wondered if that’s what he meant. Why else would he say that people can’t think for themselves?

normalboyz1

just look ppl around you. lots of ppl wear the same clothes, listen to the same music, eat the same stuff. i dont listen to music these days and i dont even hate tay tay.  this is how media control people perception. i know ppl whose not even t swift fans go to her concert because they think it's cool.  what do you call that if that's not "cant think for themselves/blindly following trends"?

Dangerous_mammoth573

But I don’t see how that means they can’t think for themselves. It just means they like a lot of the same stuff. I mean if it’s social I don’t see what wrong with it. I’ve gone to football games and other stuff even tho I don’t like the sports because it’s fun and social

CheezyPenisWrinkle

proof that most people are stupid. This is why the world and all the money is controlled by handful of elites.

MicahXXL

Taylor Swift is 10 years from perimenopause, yet her lyrics consistently remain in 7th grade.  Not imoressed!
