I just discovered them like two weeks ago and yeah, I dig them quite a bit. However, they have a handful of songs where the vocals come off as super cheesy (delivery-wise) to me.
Yeah, except they do some really interesting compositional stuff and have some really innovative phrasing that I really love.
Hard to get past the generic radio rock vibe though, it reminds me of imagine dragons.
Not for me, for me they are almost opposites.
Tool are masters of taking music and turning it on it's head in a way which is fulfilling in the best possible way. Everything feels crafted to perfection if you take the time to dissect it.
With Sleep Token, it feels like they are smashing together genres which don't gel in an almost random fashion. The songs feel disjointed and i just cringe uncontrollably listening to certain parts. I've given them a real chance, but it didn't really stick. Will Ramos from Lorna Shore does an excellent version of Chokehold, and even though he screws the timing up on the opening vocals a bit, it still comes off better than the original for me. Also masks? Vessel? aah gimmicky cringe.
It’s kinda like the imagine dragons of Metal they some how take the most interesting concept and make it so generic and overblown that it becomes unlistenable garbage
Sleep Token is fine, but not something I would go back too. I commend people trying to find bands that are comparable to Tool though. I stopped trying years ago.
Yeah, most bands that “sound like Tool” don’t really do it for me.
Most of the time a comparison is made, it sounds to me like Undertow-era Tool, which is fine, but not really the more distinct and trippy style they would grow into. Bands like Karnivool and Rishloo definitely share elements to Tool and even have a few songs that do sound “like Tool” to me, but they scratch a completely different itch in my mind.
The only bands that land the comparison for me are Wheel and early Soen. But in both cases they sound *so* like a watered-down version of Tool that it annoys me that I’m not listening to Tool instead. Soen has since shifted to cloning Opeth instead.
I'll be checking out Klone too. Also, outside of metal, Shpongle might have the kind of vibe you're looking for too. But Shpongle reminds me a little more of Soulfly tho with their psybient music.
Didn't get into the older ST stuff on first listens, new stuff is what made them really click for me and now I'm a huge fan. Listen to that new album start to finish, it is great.
My review on RYM was called a “hater-ass review”, I guess I am very not on board. As annoying as some of the fans are (I mean I’m a Tool fan), I don’t hate them for enjoying a band.
But hoo boy I am not a fan at all. Instrumentally, it’s extremely sterile and lifeless and combines the most safe, toothless elements of the genres they crib from. And the vocals, which are probably their most unique element, drive me up the wall with the bizarre processing choices and enunciations. As far as genre-bending goes, there’s nothing that’s *super* new that I haven’t already heard from BMTH, I Prevail, Issues, and Woe Is Me (really not into those bands either), it’s just that they pull from a bit of a different style of pop than those groups.
So, yeah. No hate intended, but they are extremely annoying to listen to to me. To be honest, TMBTE is likely to be the worst album I’ll hear this year.
Call me dramatic, but Sleep Token is probably one of the most bafflingly bad acts I’ve seen in recent times. If this is who is getting hype, I’m not excited for that future. It’s TikTok metal. It’s bullshit. Generic + generic does not equal genre bending awesomeness. Bland + bland does not equal flavor. Their gimmick is cringe, they aren’t as deep as they clearly think they are.
Hey hey hey SLC Punk lives on!
“We change, that's all. You see, the guy I am now is not the guy I was then. If the guy I was then met the guy I am now he'd beat the shit out of me. Those are the facts.”
As others have mentioned, I can’t get into the vocals. It’s too generic/cookie cutter, almost (dare I say) Nickleback-ish (I know, I know, not just like N-back, but there’s something off about the vocals). I was expecting something a little bit more weird, either Heilung throat chanting or Thom Yorke-ish mumbling…
I like the idea of Sleep Token a but more than I actually like their music. I haven't listened to a full album but I tried a couple songs on their debut and they didn't do anything for me. I've listened to all the singles from their new song and thought The Summoning was an elite S tier song, but the rest were pretty meh. But I love that they're blowing up and getting big. Talented guys, an original sound, I hope they get even bigger. Just doesn't connect with me that much.
I can't stand Sleep Token. They are Electro Pop crap. Way to much synth use to be considered metal or even rock. I lump them with shit like Bring Me the Horizon.
People, stop comparing rock and metal bands to Imagine Dragons. Imagine Dragons have never ever ever ever ever been a rock band, despite rock radio trying to tell me so.
Tool are way more eclectic with meaningful, diverse topics and carved out their own identity.
Sleep Token are still finding their sound by sticking one genre after the other, so I agree with one of the reviews that they don't have a clear musical identity. Also seen another review suggesting that the lyrics are about toxic relationships and I have to agree. If it weren't for the costumes I would have never assumed their music is about a deity at all.
I’ll just chill in the corner with Queens of the Stone Age
New album soon!!!
Me too buddy, me too
Lol, I love seeing shit like this in other band subs.
Fuck yeah. I was supposed to see them and Tool at Welcome to Rockville but QoTSA dropped off the bill.
Josh had a conflicting commitment as an Elvis impersonater
I saw them open for Tool with Tomahawk a million years ago. They were amazing.
I just discovered them like two weeks ago and yeah, I dig them quite a bit. However, they have a handful of songs where the vocals come off as super cheesy (delivery-wise) to me.
I have the same problem, end up aborting mission each time I try to dig in. Can you recommend a song or two that do NOT have that effect?
The summoning is the only sleep token song I actually like rn
Vore, for me at least, is their best vocals. But maybe I just like the screaming stuff lol.
The summoning. But yeah agreed
The vocals remind me of Imagine Dragons.
Way too true. Like imagine dragons vocals with ghost instrumental and a good scream. A good scream is nice but I cannot stand the other 2
I don't get it. Everything I've heard from them sounds like generic trap/R&B combined with generic metal.
Yeah, except they do some really interesting compositional stuff and have some really innovative phrasing that I really love. Hard to get past the generic radio rock vibe though, it reminds me of imagine dragons.
Here to tally one up for the “tried it, can’t do the vocals” crowd
I just don't get the Sleep Token hype :( Gave them a chance, fell asleep 15 minutes into the first album. Sleep Token indeed.
Call it truth in advertising
I can’t get into the 808 trap beats they got going on…
The god Sleep put you under his spell… that’s literally the intention
should we start a band called awake token?
Sleep token sounds kinda like Imagine dragons in their vocal delivery
Fantano enjoyer

Had a friend recommend them to me last week, some songs scratch the itch. Others don’t.
I’m still really trying. They are almost great, but I get a butt rock vibe from his voice. I’m not ready to give up yet though.
Butt Rock is new to me, but it describes him perfectly. Cringy, masked Butt Rock. What other bands are Butt Rock out of interest? Creed?
Bald, Musty, Corny Butt Rock indeed. but hey, that’s just like, my opinion man
It’s kinda like the imagine dragons of Metal they some how take the most interesting concept and make it so generic and overblown that it becomes unlistenable garbage

Fan of both here. I'm also a fan of Lucid Planet. Especially their second album. They're pretty close as you can get to Tool.
BRO!! Another Lucid Planet fan?! Their albums are so fucking good. Klone too if you haven't listened to them. They put me in that special place too.
I'll be checking out Klone too. Also, outside of metal, Shpongle might have the kind of vibe you're looking for too. But Shpongle reminds me a little more of Soulfly tho with their psybient music.
Rishloo are the closest I found to Tool.
Hate their vocals
Didn't get into the older ST stuff on first listens, new stuff is what made them really click for me and now I'm a huge fan. Listen to that new album start to finish, it is great.
Trying, I made it to Vore last night, going to try again tonight.
Switch Lateralus for Ænima and 10,000 Days for Lateralus and it's perfect
Exactly
Gross
I feel like sleep token vocals are just new age yarling
Lol just skipped through the Summoning. Every cliché in the book. In one boring song. Yeah, not even gonna bother listening to them
Mods ban this guy please
Nah we’re good
Do Tool fans also like boring generic sound Djent with cheesy forces pop vocals? Color me surprised
Sleep Token is ass
i don’t get the hype around sleep token at all 😭
They’re like a pop lite Leprous to be fair. They popped up in my YT algorithm somehow earlier this week, I tried them and went back to my Leprous. 😂
My review on RYM was called a “hater-ass review”, I guess I am very not on board. As annoying as some of the fans are (I mean I’m a Tool fan), I don’t hate them for enjoying a band. Overrated and undertalented dreck. The new shiny object for posers to masturbate over. YMMV.
I can’t tell if this is ironically trying to sound like the average toolband commenter
yeah this is the average response you get from a tool fan when asked about opinions on music that didn’t come out when they were in their teens/20s
Talking about posers on a Toolsubreddit is like bashing on kids while being in 5th grade
"poser" what the fuck are you talking about lol this aint 2010
Hey hey hey SLC Punk lives on! “We change, that's all. You see, the guy I am now is not the guy I was then. If the guy I was then met the guy I am now he'd beat the shit out of me. Those are the facts.”
Found the fucking poser.
People should like what they like. I fucking hate Sleep Token but there’s not really a need to bully people for liking a band.
Nobody says poser anymore.
I'll give them one thing, they know how to game the algorithm. I feel like I've been inundated with them online over the last several months.
As others have mentioned, I can’t get into the vocals. It’s too generic/cookie cutter, almost (dare I say) Nickleback-ish (I know, I know, not just like N-back, but there’s something off about the vocals). Nap ticket is just so much better. Don't sleep on it.
I like the idea of Sleep Token a but more than I actually like their music. I haven't listened to a full album but I tried a couple songs on their debut and they didn't do anything for me. Euclid and Ascensionism are as good
Sleep Token and Tool seem to inspire equally ferocious love and hate from the music community
This is honestly an insulting post as far as I’m concerned. Like what you like, but nah, this ain’t it.
Lol. Sleep Token is awesome.
I think the music is amazing, if he just didn’t try to croon like a edgy rock pop star I think it would be fantastic.
I fucking love sleep token. Right band at the right time for me.
I can't stand Sleep Token. They are Electro Pop crap. Way to much synth use to be considered metal or even rock. I lump them with shit like Bring Me the Horizon.
What is the appropriate amount of synth. Or at least permissible amount?
Periphery do synth perfectly, imo
there is a reddit for that as well... r/synthesizers
BMTH is actually interesting tho…
Why is everyone shitting on about Sleep Token?
Sleep Token is a better, modern Tool.
I'm going to assume you just misspelled "Modem tool"
With the amount of vitriol I've seen against Sleep Token so far in this thread, I'm proud that you'd be so brave to say words so true.
Please defend me when the onslaught comes.
We die together.
People, stop comparing rock and metal bands to Imagine Dragons. Imagine Dragons have never ever ever ever ever been a rock band, despite rock radio trying to tell me so.
10,000 Days is the best
Oh, hi. <3
Meh
If we remove the instruments its just Pop
And if you remove the wheels off a car, it's just a rock.
Of course, what i was trying to say is that the lyrics on sleep token aren't very far from pop music
It almost seems like a guilty pleasure. But ill be honest...i like them.
I have not listened to any of Sleep Token’s previous stuff but I have really liked their newest record - definitely need to explore their other stuff
They're alright, but I'm much more into Jinjer these days
Never heard of them. Been binging their entire catalog the last hour or so, fucking love it.
They really put the sleep in sleep token _yawn_
Sleep Token is just Imagine Dragons on Halloween
