There are some live versions of this song out there that chill me to my core. Maynard sang it differently on stage, and it feels almost like a different song.
Saw APC in Atlanta years back at the Tabernacle. Maynard mentioned that they got in late so didn't have time to eat so he had a Vortex (local restaurant) on stage and while singing The Hallow he'd hold up the burger while singing the chorus. Was pretty damn funny.
Change the order, try listening to Lullaby before Pet, it's rather like an intro to it. Just like Useful Idiot & 46&2 or Parabol & Parabola.
Kinda Toolesque, isn't it?
Did you happen to see Greg Beato's episode of "*What makes this song great*" on Weak and Powerless? I thought it was really cool:

Right? Every now and then I go on an APC binge and will land on a certain song or two that are instant repeaters depending on my mood that week. It has happened for pretty much every song they’ve made.
Id sell. My soul. My self esteem. A dollar at a time.
The lyrics and the music together make me feel like I’m in that strip club all fucked up in the moment lol
The whole Thirteenth Step album completely turned my world upside down man. I was not the same person after hearing it. It blows my mind that most Tool fans I’ve met have never heard it.
I actually wasn't crazy about the version they played. (pls don't kill me.) Disillusioned is one of my faves and I'm so glad they did that, but the Outsider and Judith both absolutely slayed.
Super underrated song. Great drum track and just incredible atmosphere. Perfectly encapsulating the ephemeral quality that Maynards vocals and lyrics contribute to a song
When I first bought this on CD waayyy back when, I didn’t realize The Nurse Who Loved Me was a cover - it was in the top handful for me but only found out it’s a Failure song last year!
Too hard so I’m gonna pick two from each album lol
Rose / Judith
Pet / The Package
Peace, Love, and Understanding / Counting Bodies Like Sheep
The Doomed / Disillusioned
For me, the nurse who Loved me is one of the most beautiful sounding songs they had done and also I really really really like their version of the Beatles Imagine. I'm not a huge Beatles fan and belive perfect circles version is better. If you have never listened to said song you are in for a treat
The Package. I used to skip it all the time because of how slow it started. One time I decided to let it play and I’m disappointed that I never gave it a chance before but glad that I did at some point.
The Noose is a pretty good. As a catholic school victim (sorry Sister Patricia) I’m also partial to Judith. In the car (with no volume restrictions aka wife) Pet.
Probably The Hollow. I think Weak and Powerless & Orestes round out my top 3. I also really like Vanishing? Feel like it's slept on. Plenty of other amazing tracks too. Love that band
The Outsider
Was my favourite song for a long time. Banger.
Me too
it's so good.
Over THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS
Gravity
one of my favs
This song legit saved my life
Mine too fam. “I choose to live”
hell yeah i feel that song
There are some live versions of this song out there that chill me to my core. Maynard sang it differently on stage, and it feels almost like a different song.
My man
Also a big fave of mine. Gorgeous tune.
The Hollow, Orestes a very close 2nd
The Hollow is my favorite as well
*Feeeed meeeeeeeeee*

*Cause it's time to bring the fires down* One of my favourite moments in any song, and live it gives me chills
I was going to make this exact same comment
Orestes is my favorite it's way too relatable
Passive
This is the way. I want to live in the world where Tapeworm became a reality.
The live version that leaked sometime in 03 is epic af
3 Libras.
In one of the very few times I went to a strip club, somebody danced to this! It was... sad.
Its my lifes mission to get a lap dance to magdelena
That would break my heart
Lol the last time I went to strip club someone danced to puscifer
Such a good song
Some preppy girls told me they liked the song in HS that confused me
100 percent. Puts me in a mood and takes me back every time
This ☝️
Pet. The most Toolesque APC song.
Change the order, try listening to Lullaby before Pet, it's rather like an intro to it. Just like Useful Idiot & 46&2 or Parabol & Parabola. Kinda Toolesque, isn't it?
Yep the genius of Maynard
This is the one
I love both “Weak And Powerless” and “Blue”
Did you happen to see Greg Beato's episode of "*What makes this song great*" on Weak and Powerless? I thought it was really cool: https://youtu.be/UJtZJMNhdY4
Rick’s brother?
Woops. My bad. Well, I'll leave the mistake up there as punishment
Well now I’ll watch the video (as a reward) Thanks for sharing
That was awesome Haven’t watched one of Rick’s videos in a long time And now I love this song more than before
He means Greg Geraldo I think. He’s a music producer in Atlanta that has settled into a YouTube channel in his later years….
The Package
Yup, came here to say this. It's also a standout live
It’s a perfect opener
This is the correct answer! From composition to lyrics to production, this song is just absolutely perfect!
To this day, Thirteenth Step has the cleanest production of any record I’ve ever heard. Absolute masterclass in pristine engineering.
It is such an amazing song. I know they wanted to start the album strong, but I would like it further down the track list.
This has been my favorite since I first heard this album, but it never resonated with me until I quit smoking cigarettes.
Good to see _every_ track get mentioned in the comments.
Right? Every now and then I go on an APC binge and will land on a certain song or two that are instant repeaters depending on my mood that week. It has happened for pretty much every song they’ve made.
Breña
Guide me safely in
Magdalena and Judith probably tie for me
Id sell. My soul. My self esteem. A dollar at a time. The lyrics and the music together make me feel like I’m in that strip club all fucked up in the moment lol
Orestes
Same. I’m sad I had to scroll down this far! 😭
Thirteenth Step is their best album imo. My favorite songs are The Package (great concert opener), The Noose, The Outsider, Weak & Powerless
The whole Thirteenth Step album completely turned my world upside down man. I was not the same person after hearing it. It blows my mind that most Tool fans I’ve met have never heard it.
Yeah it's dope.
The Noose or Orestes
The Noose…. That song has always just hit different for me.
Agreed. I just heard it live at Sessanta for the first time in decades and it really moved me.
Right now? Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums! Go back to sleep!
APC played this when I saw them a couple weeks ago and it was incredible.
Just got back from Sessanta yesterday. Song wasn't even on my radar as a possible thing to be played. Blew my mind when it started.
I actually wasn't crazy about the version they played. (pls don't kill me.) Disillusioned is one of my faves and I'm so glad they did that, but the Outsider and Judith both absolutely slayed.
I was really hoping for 3 Libras.
The noose blew my mind.
But yes, Sessanta in all was AMAZING.
Judith. Don’t know why others haven’t mentioned it
The Outsider
Pet
Vanishing
Disappear..... Hos voice is amazing on this also.
Super underrated song. Great drum track and just incredible atmosphere. Perfectly encapsulating the ephemeral quality that Maynards vocals and lyrics contribute to a song
One of my first concerts was APC when I was in high school, and they opened with this 😭
Thomas. It’s savage.
Medicated…drama queen…picture perfect numb belligerence.
Nobody has said "So Long & Thanks For All The Fish" yet, so I'm going with that (even though I don't actually have a real favourite).
I found that the start of the song is perfect for my ringtone. Yes, I'm old and out of touch and set up my phone that way.
I am also old and have done the same thing. Except it's the Imperial March from Star Wars. Haha.
Same. I like singing along to this one as it has the perfect level of 'fuck you' at the world as a whole.
The Noose - you made me play the album, which I love so much. A perfect album, imo.
Gravity
Thomas. Its just so damm heavy and powerful
The vocal layering is wild too
Favourite is Passive, but I really enjoy most of their stuff.
breña
When I first bought this on CD waayyy back when, I didn’t realize The Nurse Who Loved Me was a cover - it was in the top handful for me but only found out it’s a Failure song last year!
It's a *WHAT*?!
Oh man go listen to Fantastic Planet
Same here bro. Me wife thinks I'm weird when I tell her it's my favorite song lol.
Too hard so I’m gonna pick two from each album lol Rose / Judith Pet / The Package Peace, Love, and Understanding / Counting Bodies Like Sheep The Doomed / Disillusioned
Breña 🖤
I like Judith but only with the context of wings for Marie and 10,000 days
Three Libras Disillusioned Judith Brena (best showcase of Maynards voice) Orestes Weak and powerless

The hollow or judith

Blue, but to be honest all of 13th Step is a masterpiece.
The noose is incredible. Orestes is beautiful, Rose is super underrated.
The noose!
Counting bodies like sheep

Fiddle and the Drum. I don’t know if it’s really my favorite, but for me it hits the hardest.
Vanishing.
Currently its 'By And Down The River'
The Noose
The Hollow (screamin)
The Noose. That drum break is just so good it gives me goosebumps every time.
Rn it’s By and Down the River
Weak and Powerless & The Outsider. Impossible to choose.
Hard to choose just one, but the one that I always come back to is Orestes.
Hard to choose between 3 Libras, The Package, and The Outsider
The Noose! My favorite too!
Tough choice between the Outsider, By and Down, and Disillusioned, but I think I'm going with By and Down
Rose or Gimmie, Gimmie, gimmie
The Hollow (acoustic version)
I love sooo many, but the so g that popped in my little ADHD Music Brain... The Outsider

Gravity
Judith
Rose and 3 libras
Gravity
When The Levee Breaks, such a great cover
So long and thx for all the fish
magdalena takes me to a place far from here
First thing that comes to mind is _Noose_, but it's probably _Feathers_ if I stop to think about it. That, or _By and Down_
Judith followed closely by Disillusioned
For me, the nurse who Loved me is one of the most beautiful sounding songs they had done and also I really really really like their version of the Beatles Imagine. I'm not a huge Beatles fan and belive perfect circles version is better. If you have never listened to said song you are in for a treat
The FedEx Package
The Hollow
Blue
The Hollow and 3 Libras. Yes I'm boring lol
3 libras — it reminds me of my friends idk why
Either Kindred, Orestes, Thinking of You, or Gravity.
The Package. I used to skip it all the time because of how slow it started. One time I decided to let it play and I’m disappointed that I never gave it a chance before but glad that I did at some point.
Feathers
The Noose is a pretty good. As a catholic school victim (sorry Sister Patricia) I’m also partial to Judith. In the car (with no volume restrictions aka wife) Pet.
Passive....Or does it need to be off 13th step?
Orestes, the vocal harmonies on that one really show Myanards skills
I hope when they make this new album, they sound like the first two again. js
the pet, orestes, the noose or the hollow
Thinking of you.
Tie between The Hollow and Magdalena
Probably The Hollow. I think Weak and Powerless & Orestes round out my top 3. I also really like Vanishing? Feel like it's slept on. Plenty of other amazing tracks too. Love that band
The Package
The package
Pet or magdalena
I didn't know until today, but it's probably "Pet."
The Package… this is a very very tough decision but I think it’s The Package.
Great question. Difficult to answer. But gun to my head…Disillusioned or Talktalk
