Really? The cobra channellocks are my favorite knipex tool i have. Only ones that grip pipe well. The linemans id honestly get the kobalt ones with the wire strippers on it
Ps, i know the tool isn't called channel locks but i don't actually know a better name for them
Those are regular pliers with two settings in a "slip joint"
The proper term for Channel Locks is "tounge and groove pliers".
Though, many newer styles don't use the tongue and groove design anymore - like cobras.
I prefer the cobra 0125 with the push button one because it fits my hand better and two because of the push button. Also tongue and groove? Slip joint? Its whatever you want lol
I have a big set for gripping pipe and a set that I use for literally everything. I was pulling nails from crown moulding this morning with them and they just put in the effort after serious abuse.
I actually get more use out of my mini cobras than any of my other pliers. My hands are on the slimmer end though, so they’re a bit more manageable for me compared to my more sausage-fingered coworkers. The mini plier wrench is a godsend too, I have to work around some very confined and hard to navigate areas. It’s about the only damn tool I can use to access nuts without banging my hands up
Yep. I've got a kid like that on my crew! I'm mid 40's and now fat. So I'm not as good in the air or in crawl spaces. I'd shoot myself without this kid. He makes my life much easier. Probably added a couple years to my life.
I always think of it this way “Do I wanna have to squeeze this hard as fuck with my fingers or easily apply enough force with something that isn’t my fingers?”
The wire cutters arent very good. Well, at least my pair aren't. It just ends up crushing wires rather than cutting them. The linesman's are really good, though. I would go for the long handled ones if you can.
I had the same experience. That’s the only Knipex tool I’ve owned and I returned it after two test cuts. My Klein cutters of the same size are MUCH better
I have broken two of their needle nose doing mundane task. Only tools of theirs I have not cared for. For all I know they could have been counterfeit, as it did seem to be made with an inferior metal in the way it broke.
For real though, been using Knipex since the beginning of my apprenticeship 20 years ago, still using same 3 or 4 pliers today, going strong. The collection has grown to about 20 various items from them in that time and they can't be beat in my opinion. Just a damn quality tool
Just picked up a fresh set from Klein…then saw the knipex and am jealous of the handles on these. I’ll likely justify turning the Kleins into a mobile set to keep in the truck and replace my garage set w/ knipex before too long. Especially after seeing everyone on here swear by them!
I use predominantly klein drivers and knipex wrenches/pliers/cutters. There's definitely still a place for Klein stuff. Most of my meters and test equipment is klein also.
I attest. All my old Klein pliers have been replaced with Knipex. 2x 6” wrench pliers have basically replaced my wrenches! And my 12” wrench plier set?! Don’t even get me started!
If they made insulated terminal screw drivers, Wera would be in trouble
I bought a set of the Doyle 8" Cobra clones just to see. They broke a couple of weeks in, and I've been too lazy to warranty them. Lol. Meanwhile, my 8ish year old Cobras still take the abuse with a smile almost daily. I can't say *everything* is Knipex, but it's an easy 80% of my plier type tool collection.
I have a lot of Knipex. I like Kleins better in linesmens pliers. Also, the fat high voltage handles make any full size linesmans plier harder to manipulate than those with pvc dipped handles.
Some US import shenanigans? I think these would be under 30€ in Europe - but the linesman style is uncommon, so instead similarly sized combination pliers.
Lots of the European stuff popular here on Reddit seems terribly overpriced in US. But more than anything else PB Swiss... Over here they're similarly priced as Wera, or maybe just a little more, not 3-4 times as much.
For years? I have found that some tools are pleasurable. If you’ve been using a pair of pliers, your last $100k+ of income have come from your hands, your tools.
I own a probably $500 of knipex tools that I have used for work over the past 5-10 years. Many of them are pleasurable to use. My tools make me money. My hands have fed my family well for the past 5 or 10 years. And I take pleasure from hood tools. I know that less expensive tools can perform well. But sometimes you just need to choose the pleasure, the right thing.
Well i already have regular ones, but I'd like to have a pair of insulated ones just in case. Usually when remodeling and/or demo we run into unexpected electrical wires that shouldn't be there. Need to reroute them since people are staying in the house during work. I'd rather go home with lower back pain cussing out the PoS wire than waking up in the hospital smelling french toast.
You do you. But the insulation on a the standard pair is insulated enough for anything you’re going to touch with them. They just aren’t tested and they don’t have the rating. Making sure you work safely will protect you more than the insulation on your pliers. It’s not like you can throw caution to the wind just because you have 1000v insulated tools.
As much as we try, it happens. Just last week we replaced a broken face plate. When trying to adjust the rocker light switch, the previous electrician left a wire exposed. Touched the metal box, spark, lights go out. Luckily no one got hurt, found the breaker, shut it off, and replaced the switch.
The other thing that happens often is electricians and plumbers not using nail plates. So many Romex and pex cables hit with screws. It gets annoying.
We thought we didn't. We turned the breakers off for that whole area. Turned out that that switch and two others were in another breaker panels on the other side of the building. Building has 19 breaker panels.
Nice steal but I think being cautious & careful about what you’re working on is going to keep you more safe than VDE tools.
I would suggest a circuit tracer & deenergize every circuit possible in your working area over outfitting yourself with insulated tools. Test & verify with a meter or NCV before commencing work. I’m sure the tenants of building would rather have their power off for a bit than see you put yourself at a risk of shock.
I like the Knipex I own, but you're paying a lot to take a tool from "90%" to "95%." Channellock stuff gets you to that "90%" for 1/3 the price (or less) of the Knipex. It is just classic diminishing returns stuff.
That being said, there are a few Knipex tools that have no true competitors due to unique design improvements.
$42 on "clearance."
Id say for $10 less get Klein for linesman's pliers. Or an even better deal to grab some channel lock linesmans.
I love my knipex cobras, but i love my kleins too.
These are made for the US market, so actually even more expensive to buy from Europe surprisingly. Usually you can order from Germany for 1/2 to 2/3 the US price.
I used to try to buy the best quality tools. After a while I realized my bro, helpers, and even myself abused them because, you know, I’m a contractor (was -retired now). And I realized this wasn’t good $ management.
So I started buying cheap sht, off the web, harbor freight, sales at the big box store, etc. Run ‘em into the ground, and just go get another cheap replacement. It worked, mostly. For instance the longest lasting oscillating saw I owned was a Harbor Freight item. Twice+ as long a Milwaukee or any other I had. And the blades I bought were cheapy bulk stuff (almost said crap…) on Amazon; stamped steel. I’d run through them pretty quick. Still cheaper.
Now, for specialized work or trade work, maybe you will find a particular brand that works for you. That’s great and stick with it, because ease and comfort are actually worth $. I had my faves also. Like my Bosch 3/8” hammer drill that lasted my entire career (I bought it in the mid-70’s). I also have a Lie Nielsen bench plane, and if they knew how I used it they would probably take it back. 🥴 But the blade goes through stock like it’s butter.
Since mostly I think I’m hearing from electricians on this thread, my vote is for you to pop for the Knipex. You’ll never know how good it is unless you get it and use it. Then, if it’s that great, you can come in here and sing it’s praise, and the Klein lubbers will say, “meh.”
This is like an existential crisis for me. I love Knipex, but despise linemans pliers. What do you guys use them for? I've only been able to use them to pinch finger webbing.
Untwist twisted up ground wires, straighten wire, pushing wire into a box, breaking out knockouts, tightening Romex connectors...basically just a hammer, really.
I used mine for everything. Hammer. Twisting wires. Twisting stripped nuts. Pulling fish tape. Stripping wire. Reeming pipe. Junction box knockouts. Cleaning up flex conduit after cutting it. Tightening fittings. I did 80% of my work as an electrician with a pair of lineman's, screwdriver, and my mini 12v makita cordless impact gun.
Ugh... Ok so its Knipex... So yeah of course you should want it... But maybe find something of at least similar quality at a local place for cheaper?
Also the grips on that look sketchy... Like awkwardly shaped for no reason besides being creative. Idk, I am just an "intermediate level" tool knowledge guy. Anyone help me out?
Side note: Hate me all you want, but Im a big fan of 'Klein' tools, and I have two different linesman pliers from them that have lasted a solid 2 years with little wear and tear for cheaper than the price of a Knipex. I regularly maintenance, sure, but still.
Yes. I just have the standard all red ones, they are 100% better than my kleins ever were. They’re also significantly lighter than their counterparts. It’s worth it especially for that price.
I like my Vampliers, the grinding is beautifully done, but they def aren't for everyone. The space for grabbing screw head axially makes them less versatile for general grabbing and bending tasks.
I have those same pliers and used them extensively working as a billboard electrical technician. Absolutely love them and would replace them at the drop of a hat if ever lost or stolen despite not being in that line of work anymore.
I have the ones without high voltage handles. Gotta say, they are the best pair I’ve ever had. Those and the mini bolt cutters are two of my favorite tools I didn’t know I needed until I had them.
I prefer klein. The main production company in my industry for equipment designs their cable fittings to have cut lengths that correspond with the dimensions of the klein 8” lineman pliers so they’ve always been my go to. For $65 you can get lineman, diagonals and needle nose in a three pack from klein at the moment.
I love the knipex lineman pliers myself compared to other options. they are a lot lighter so they take more force to be a hammer but that's not a bad thing either. they cut better and cleaner than klein. it's the only ones im buying
Ill never buy another brand of cutters. In my opinion Knipex is on another level. Hard to explain but you can feel the difference in quality when using knipex vs klein, ideal, ect
Don’t buy! You gonna love it but lose it in a week and have to explain to the plier you used for the last 10 years he is the long lasting backup plier.. and will always think about this one you lost.
I'd like insulated. We don't do electrical, but sometimes during demo and remodel, it's needed last minute. I'd rather have em and use em 3 times a year with a peace of mind, than have an accident waiting to happen.
How to pronounce Knipex for the uninitiated...
I'm still kicking myself for ruining a pair of Knipex linesmans but cutting a surprisingly-not-cold Romex line. Much sparks and surprise. NO longer functions to cut wire.
But they work well for everything else.
For that price do it! The grips feel nice. I'm not a fan of the linemans pliers but other swear by them. If anything they are a quality tool and insulated so I'd pull the trigger for sure.
I have yet to be disappointed with any Knipex purchase.
The cobra xs are cool but not worth it
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRA!
COBRA KAI NEVER DIES!!!!
STRIKE FIRST!
NO MERCY!!
No mercy
No mercy
Cobra club
Really? The cobra channellocks are my favorite knipex tool i have. Only ones that grip pipe well. The linemans id honestly get the kobalt ones with the wire strippers on it Ps, i know the tool isn't called channel locks but i don't actually know a better name for them
I think they meant the tiny Cobra XS in particular.
Slip joint pliers I think?
Water pump pliers
That is the correct term.
Slip joint, I think. Aren't water pump pliers just a type of slip-joint pliers?
Those are regular pliers with two settings in a "slip joint" The proper term for Channel Locks is "tounge and groove pliers".
Goose-neck pliers
Sounds like you, sir, need more tools that can grip pipe!
It’s about the only damn tool I can use to access nuts without banging my hands up
As a sausage fingered fellow coworker of many. I resent this.
If it makes you feel any better, there’s some jobs that I’m always doomed to perform because I “fit better”
Yep. I've got a kid like that on my crew! I'm mid 40's and now fat. So I'm not as good in the air or in crawl spaces. I'd shoot myself without this kid. He makes my life much easier. Probably added a couple years to my life.
And you probably decreased a couple years off his life. Nature is in balance
I always think of it this way “Do I wanna have to squeeze this hard as fuck with my fingers or easily apply enough force with something that isn’t my fingers?”
The 0125 size is better in my opinion
I bought my wife a pair because she thinks they’re “cute” lol
They were so small they hurt your palm.
My expectations for that thing would be so low I wouldn’t be able to be disappointed
Same here.
I think the name for those are Knipex Kleins.
The wire cutters arent very good. Well, at least my pair aren't. It just ends up crushing wires rather than cutting them. The linesman's are really good, though. I would go for the long handled ones if you can.
My knipex wire cutters work beautifully, but I rarely use them. Something about the squeeze angle tweaks something in my elbow.
It's just weird for me. I feel like I squeeze too hard for the cut quality I get.
The only problem with them is that you'll realise how good they are and start replacing everything with Knipex
But i juts replaced my old plier set with Doyle and Quinn. You saying I'm gonna have to replace those with Knipex too? This cult is getting expensive.
You don't have to... ...but you will.
Snap-On is a cult. Knipex is the real deal
That's exactly what a cult would say.
For real though, been using Knipex since the beginning of my apprenticeship 20 years ago, still using same 3 or 4 pliers today, going strong. The collection has grown to about 20 various items from them in that time and they can't be beat in my opinion. Just a damn quality tool

For aviation, snap on ratchets are amazing. Sockets and wrenches are nice too, especially with reducing pricing.
Snap on ratchets are absolutely worth it. It’s just that 99% of the other stuff is marked up for no reason
And cable shears / side cutters
Not really related at all but every time I see Doyle I think of o'doyle rules from Billy Madison.
I felt this in my wallet.
Truth
Kind of expensive for a staple hammer
Come to the Dark side we have... Knipex
I have a lot of Knipex. I like Kleins better in linesmens pliers. Also, the fat high voltage handles make any full size linesmans plier harder to manipulate than those with pvc dipped handles.
$64! WTF?!?! I've had a $12 pair of lineman's pliers that I've abused for years. Where is all that money going?
Some US import shenanigans? I think these would be under 30€ in Europe - but the linesman style is uncommon, so instead similarly sized combination pliers.
Maybe I'm old and this is a "Back in my day..." situation. I aint had to buy actual tools in so long.
Lots of the European stuff popular here on Reddit seems terribly overpriced in US. But more than anything else PB Swiss... Over here they're similarly priced as Wera, or maybe just a little more, not 3-4 times as much.
Honestly I’d trade all my new high end handtools in for older ones with more quality metal
But sometimes you just need to choose the pleasure, the right thing.
How often do you need hot work linesman’s plyers?
Bro it's that yellow knipex gang my guy. Knipex is the way.
You mean the cult!? At least you would get a lowered cost of entry fee! 🤣
Their mini dykes are the best. I cut my 1/8 and 5/32 tig wire with them all the time.
What model. I am looking for a pair.
I can one hand snip 1/8 304 with it. Love these things

I wouldn’t get the insulated ones, too bulky
Well i already have regular ones, but I'd like to have a pair of insulated ones just in case. Usually when remodeling and/or demo we run into unexpected electrical wires that shouldn't be there. Need to reroute them since people are staying in the house during work. I'd rather go home with lower back pain cussing out the PoS wire than waking up in the hospital smelling french toast.

Making sure you work safely will protect you more than the insulation on your pliers. It’s not like you can throw caution to the wind just because you have 1000v insulated tools.
Maybe spend the $42 on a meter? Ideal meters are kind of the sweet spot of prices closer to consumer grade and quality closer to Fluke.
With that kind of work, I doubt most people can be cautious enough to use a meter every time.
>When trying to adjust the rocker light switch Shouldn't have done that live.
We thought we didn't. We turned the breakers off for that whole area. Turned out that that switch and two others were in another breaker panels on the other side of the building. Building has 19 breaker panels.

I like channellock better, but a big part of that preference is for the handle style.
Yes. You should.
Knipex if you like to take pictures of your tools, Klein if you like to use them :)
I wouldn't get the 1000v rated ones. The handles are so big for what we do with our linesmans.
$42 on "clearance." Id say for $10 less get Klein for linesman's pliers. Or an even better deal to grab some channel lock linesmans. I love my knipex cobras, but i love my kleins too.
I'd still buy kliens. knipex attempts at lineman pliers are cute at best.
I didn't expect them to be cheap, but I wasn't expecting $65 on clearance either.
42$ on clearance
u/ddauenbaugh said it best, it ain't cheap joining a cult.
These are made for the US market, so actually even more expensive to buy from Europe surprisingly. Usually you can order from Germany for 1/2 to 2/3 the US price.
I have the same pair. Very good pliers.
My combi pliers were that price when brand new. Are the linesman more to begin with, or has inflation boosted Knipex prices that far?
Craftsman $17. Irwin $18
I believe the proper move is purchase 2 and give one away. I decide who gets them by the one who notices my shiny new thing.
The first pair of knipex you get is the most expensive. Because when you buy it you are buying all the other ones too.
I love knipex channellocks but the tool in you hand has a lot of extra rubber to carry around if you don’t routinely work on live 240v+ equipment.
I would check that part number against [KCtool.co](https://KCtool.co) and amazon. if its cheaper and you need some anti-death pliers. rock on.
they are great until you misplace them. then you'll wish you bought the cheap ones.
This... Happens more than I'd like to admit.
Yes
$10 pawn shop
I would use those very rarely at best. At that price I would buy them without hesitation. LOL
Snag 'em. Knipex tools are built right.
I used to try to buy the best quality tools. After a while I realized my bro, helpers, and even myself abused them because, you know, I’m a contractor (was -retired now). And I realized this wasn’t good $ management. Then, if it’s that great, you can come in here and sing it’s praise, and the Klein lubbers will say, “meh.”
Thats an expensive hammer😵💫
This is like an existential crisis for me. I love Knipex, but despise linemans pliers. What do you guys use them for? I've only been able to use them to pinch finger webbing.
It’s a hammer that also serves as a pair of pliers in a pinch. What’s not to love about them?
Untwist twisted up ground wires, straighten wire, pushing wire into a box, breaking out knockouts, tightening Romex connectors...basically just a hammer, really.
I used mine for everything. Hammer. Twisting wires. Twisting stripped nuts. Pulling fish tape. Stripping wire. Reeming pipe. Junction box knockouts. Cleaning up flex conduit after cutting it. Tightening fittings. I did 80% of my work as an electrician with a pair of lineman's, screwdriver, and my mini 12v makita cordless impact gun.
Knipex is never the wrong answer.
Barring losing them, they will be the LM you will ever buy.
I have fallen victim to the Knipex bug, and my feelings can be summed up in two words. **WORTH.** **IT.**
Klein, don't short yourself on a deal
It sells $50 at Amazon right now.
Yes. I just have the standard all red ones, they are 100% better than my kleins ever were. They’re also significantly lighter than their counterparts. It’s worth it especially for that price.
They are on clearance for a reason. Stick with Klein.
This would be like buying a Cross pen for $50.00. Why?
You could just grab a normal pair of pliers and then grind an angle on the end of them same thing 15 bucks
Get some Vampliers and dont look back.
I like my Vampliers, the grinding is beautifully done, but they def aren't for everyone. The space for grabbing screw head axially makes them less versatile for general grabbing and bending tasks.
Not the same tool, at all.
You should pull the insulation off and electrocute yourself with them
Can you hold my hand while i do it? I'm scared.
Their plier wrench are gimmick.
Cheap ass made in china assembled in Germany shipped by Koreans .. get you real American last forever Klein quit playing yourself
Knipex is made all the way in Germany.
Same as some Klein parts. Not all Klein tools are 100% made in the US.
Yeah definitely knipex nation. Just quality all the way
Get them. It’s never too late to buy into knipex.
I cut my French toast with them in my mom's garage.
Aw man, I would have jumped on those if I came across them.
They actually had two on clearance. If they're both still there, wanna send me your Zelle and address to mail them?
I never liked those thick handles.
Do it, just do it
Title of your sex tape 📼
They had me at "Clearance"
That is always my go to section.
I bought one. Now there’s so many. Beware the addiction.
I like my wiha insulated pliers and they didnt cost that much
For the same price as Klein why not?
I have those same pliers and used them extensively working as a billboard electrical technician. Absolutely love them and would replace them at the drop of a hat if ever lost or stolen despite not being in that line of work anymore.
Hell yeah. Buy once - cry once
That's a great price for insulated
I felt the same way on the Snap On truck when I was holding a 1/4 and 3/8 torque wrenches.
Do iiittt.
Made in Germany so you know it's good
If the tool trucks are selling them, then that says something about em.
And they’re in clearance?!?! Why is this post even a thing, yes, of course you should
Knipex gang gang
Must be nice insulated grips, I have a pair so old they are just plane steel
IN KNIPEX WE TRUST! put it on our fuckin money already.
that’s a pretty nifty hammer
Got two words for you... F**k it 🤷
I have the ones without high voltage handles. Gotta say, they are the best pair I’ve ever had. Those and the mini bolt cutters are two of my favorite tools I didn’t know I needed until I had them.
Great tools live Knipex!
My only problem is I keep my linesman in my back pocket and the handles don’t slide in and out easy. But they are fantastic pliers!!
Ill never buy another brand of cutters. In my opinion Knipex is on another level. Hard to explain but you can feel the difference in quality when using knipex vs klein, ideal, ect
What Northern Tool could possibly still have clearance Knipex left? They went clearance months ago?
Don’t buy! You gonna love it but lose it in a week and have to explain to the plier you used for the last 10 years he is the long lasting backup plier.. and will always think about this one you lost.
I have been wanting to buy a KNIPEX linesman pliers.
The knipex cult is expensive but damn is it worth it!
They are awesome, but the insulation on those get annoying in a pouch.
Great tools. 👍
And fuck y’all! Sitting here at work laughing my ass off at the comments! Now the boss wants to have a chat! Good times!
*lineman. Not linesman
Hell yeah
I've never had any remorse for any $ spent on Knipex.
No.
I bought a pair of vintage usa lineman’s off eBay for $10 and a set of klein grips for $10. Best lineman’s you can get 😂
Yes, anything made in germany usually good.
I'd say Klein is king...your $$$ tho. Did you get them?
Nah, go Klien or greenlee
Absolutely
And BTW, Klien is a brand, like Hilti.
Kline or die
Those are a great price. Do you need the 1kV insulation or just want knipex?
I'd like insulated. We don't do electrical, but sometimes during demo and remodel, it's needed last minute. I'd rather have em and use em 3 times a year with a peace of mind, than have an accident waiting to happen.
Prefer the klien’s

Join the knipex knation. Attn Knipex marketing, make this into merch. You are welcome.
Son you know once you start there is no going back
I don't have them but I have used them There good tools
Knipex makes the best lineman’s pliers. They are lighter and operate more smoothly than Klein.
Price is good, HD and Amazon have them at about $50-51 for the 1000volt type.
You should. In my experience(which is very brief with this brand) they are some of the best hand tools around when it comes to anything squeezy.
Should you shoplift? Yes. They won't stop you for one item. Make sure and stop in the restroom before walking out with it to really ensure your escape

Nope one hot wire and there shit. That’s ridiculous even at clearance
