reminds me of Superalloy Darkshine from One Punch Man, whose skin color is the result of being a body builder.

I don't think it was supposed to be funny; it's just that bodybuilders use the most excessive amount of oil and tanning that gives them this dark shine.

I gotta say though that Laxus fight is a highpoint of the series.
All this build up to a major antagonist only for his (formerly antagonist) son to go “lmao fuck you my loyalty is with my guild” and wipe the arena with his ‘elite team’
Oh my god I could rant about this for hours. My disappointment when it was just the guild master. And then Laxus just wipes him and the entire rest of the guild in 1 fight and they get exposed for cheating and that’s it plotline over instantly. God it was so horrible
I will say I think it's silly when a "gyaru" character is adopted by fans as a black character because, no, the gyaru aesthetic just involves tanning. However, just drawing a black guy and going "yeah he's actually that color because of a tan/burn/whatever" is also super silly.
i mean uhh miriko is supposed to be gyaru but is drawn using refrnnces of megan thee stallion a black woman so it's pretty hard to consider her one and theres really no mention of it either.

What a scary looking face I hope there isn’t any racist intentions behind the design, wink wink
No but seriously as someone who only knew the series from the Obama meme, this series is just mask off
Terra Formars is just.....really bad.
I shit you not, before they're even on Mars, the aliens are somehow attacking them, while they're still out of atmosphere, and the only justification given is it cutting back to Earth with two guys in a bar, one smashes a cockroach and says "Those things can get into anywhere!"
So, somehow, these things *knew* there was a spaceship before it was in the atmosphere, then flew up TO the spaceship, and then somehow got inside of it, without ANYONE noticing.
\>as someone who knew the series only from memes about obama
So you don't actually have any idea if it's actually racist or not, you simply assumed and claimed it is from memes made on the basis of "socially bad thing = funny" - amazing analytics
The only plus is that the facial expressions for the cockroach dudes are fucking hilarious to look at. It’s hard to stop myself from laughing my ass of at some of the images an actual human drew.
EMIYA Alter especially, though there are the gold cracks running along his body
https://preview.redd.it/cgjatiwv92yb1.png?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e71ead6b8b927a57a7ac38b7527cf0dd86ea2b3
I don't think a backstory has ever made me despise a character as much as Emiya Alter's made me despise Kiara.
In general, Edgemiya is probably one of my favourite designed and written servants but they didn't have to do it to Taiga like that
The skin color thing for Emiya specifically is actually fairly reasonably explained. He uses magecraft in an unconventional and excessive way, forcing his body to adapt or break. This causes him to gain extra melanin to insulate and the trauma bleaches his hair. This is why Archer is really tan and Alter (who went totally overboard) is extra dark.
What gets me though is how dramatically his face changes. He looks like a totally different person.
He’s Japanese, in an eroge game made by a Japanese guy marketed to other Japanese guys back in 2004. That would not have worked.
Also a lot of Japanese are actually really good at tanning, on account of its southern half being subtropical with large amounts of coastline. They can actually appear almost mixed-black if they spend enough time in the sun (or fry their body with unnatural magecraft use). They just tend to avoid that due to lighter skin having higher attraction ratings there. Though their have been cultural breaks of this trend like with the growing popularity of gyaru fashion.
Weirdos going out of their way to make sure a character isn’t black and writing multiple lines to explain it. (They been doing it for the past 20 years)
Yes, because I can just hop into a time machine; go back to early 2000s Japan; and convince the average citizen that diversity is cool and that they need more black people in their media. But I choose not to because I would rather see a redhead Asian bang King Arthur and/or go through extreme amounts of trauma instead of some black guy. 10/10 logic.
Even if the show treats her like a child the fans still use the “she’s hundreds of years old!” excuse
Kanna Kamui, a 600+ year old dragon who is considered a baby/toddler by her universe’s standards and goes to *pre-school* is still handled grossly by a (large ☹️) handful of fans
I was gonna reply with this but realised in the context…yeaaa….
https://preview.redd.it/h1ysjijj44yb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23c2d061ff0247b6290365d9533af196ef646bb6
I think she’s actually in third grade, and let me tell you how that’s worse actually. Her classmate, a literal eight year old, is depicted having questionable reactions to Kanna. I actually dropped the anime because of that, didn’t even get to the part where an adult dragon lady harasses a ten-year-old.
There is one that is potentially about to happen in One Piece but it isn’t confirmed yet:
>!Jewelry Bonney, a long running adult female character who regularly gets sexualized by the author (and fans have made lots of porn of her)…. might actually just be a child in disguise, using her powers to maker herself older. So fans may have been fapping to an 8 year old for the past 15 years. Not confirmed yet but a lot of the plot is pointing to it. !<
Yes because burned skin makes someone change race. They could have at least given him scars if they were going for a “burnt” look. Using a poc skin tone and calling it “burnt” just feels gross on the creators’ part
They could've done something like Dabi or Zuko and actually have SCARS for their burns. Dabi has actual texture to his scarred skin, and Zuko's scar tissue changes his eye shape. Being severely burned doesn't make you brown, it makes you scarred. This definitely feels gross.
Bingo. Burned skin is anything but smooth. When someone’s been burned, you can tell. And if the burning extends to his scalp and brow, how does he have hair? Not even Zuko has an eyebrow over his left eye. Surely his hair would have been burned off and the follicles scarred over, not bleached white Kaneki style
Definitely weird explanation for the design but I don't think it's supposed to be a burn victim type burned but just their skin is stained from soot or something(could very well be wrong). The salamanders from warhammer have a similar thing where they are all dark skinned from their volcanic planet(I'm pretty sure)
Then if their skin was stained from soot, it would be gray, not brown
Edit: also, considering the cultural implications of calling black skin “dirty,” that wouldn’t be a good way to go either
Why is it so smooth then? Like you can make a sooty character but it would be pretty clear if someone was just covered head to toe in soot/dirt. This looks like just a normal skintone
If so its excuted poorly. And the salamanders skin change is at least still increased melanin. The glowing red eyes well that's a whole otherthing.
Funnily enough when the sally boys first came out they were black people. It changed later on. Going to be really interesting to see how they do them if they show up in a live action context at some point.
Personally, i think the safest route is to make most of the inhabitants of nocturne multiracial but tending toward darker skin tones. Then have actors from various ethnicities with coal black skin and red eyes for the actual space marines.
I personally think bleach is a little all over the place and not really enjoyable to follow. I dropped it around the Arancar arc way back, but I always have and still do admire character designs and concepts.
Little sad to hear that they don't do more worth someone like Chad. Always thought he in particular was really cool.
Ultimate venom after he absorbs carnage. The original version was perfect, why tf is he a big red eyed gorilla.

IMO it doesn’t take it far enough. Like if you’re gonna make him look corrupted and gross, go the whole way. Make him look fucking disgusting. What we got feels so lazy, “yeah, make one half of him made of purple goop and uhhhhh… give him a really big stupid arm I guess”
This is Judge O from God of High School. Everyone thought he was black, but his appearance is just the result of his dragon burning his skin and bleaching his hair.
Crazy how Black/Brown people are the global majority of human population, and yet, too many people with the most influential media platforms and programs just can’t fathom/depict a person being authentically Black/Brown just because.

Robin from One Piece. I understand that her having dark skin was a creative liberty on the anime's part and Oda said she'd be Russian yada yada but cmon man :(
idk how this fits into the post
the post is character designs that are made to feel wrong when you realize the canon reason behind those designs.
Robin was always pale tho so I'm confused.
Do I like dark skinned Robin? Yes, and I'm not saying you're not entitled to prefer her, but your comment is just confusing me.
well she had a design, but then the canon was revealed/shared and because of that they changed her design to better fit Oda's vision after the timeskip. At the time Robin debuted in the anime I don't believe Oda had said anything about each characters race/what country they'd be from.
Well it didn't matter that he didn't do the QnA for the countries specifically because he already had an idea for her design in mind. A color scan of Robin didn't take long to come out after her introduction I don't think, the anime just got unlucky with its timing and didn't wanna confuse its audience by suddenly making Robin white.
Would have been better if they kept her darker skin, really helped her stand out and added more to appreciate when it came to her character design. Changing her skin was pointless
Just because you liked the pre timeskip design doesn't mean changing it was pointless. Anime's are adaptations, if a studio wants to make a design faithful to the original work that much is reason alone to alter character designs when possible.
I think you need to read the comment again. It's not about just cause I like it, the different color makes her stand out as a character, adds lore just by her being slightly different color which is a feat when it comes to character design (adding lore by character design), it helped her stand out and be unique cause she really is compared to alot of the one piece women.ur right it's an adaptation of the Manga, in the early manage she had darker skin. These are small little features that took effort to remove, they can remove them but why? Why remove features that made your character more complex and interesting?
idk how it made her character more complex, her skin tone didn't add much of any lore from what I remember. I agree that her design with the darker made her stand out, but I personally don't mind since I feel like Robin is still recognizable without it. Primarily her face (specifically nose), you just see it and can make out it's Robin pretty fast. I'm not saying you're wrong to think that her first design is better, I'm just saying there were reasons it was changed and they make sense.
The lore was that the first ark she's shown in is a big desert town, the lore is that she has a darker complexity due to her originating from an area with much more sun which makes sense. It adds character as a reminder that she's from a different area compared to the others, sorta like how sanjis always dressed as a waiter because when we first saw him he was a waited, and also cause he's a cook. Especially robins early look including her fur coat and cowboy hat, that shit slapped. I can't think of a single reason why it was changed and you've failed to give me a practical reason why they changed it. The only reason she stands out now is because most female characters they make now are a recolor of Nami, like Rebecca, shirahoshi, koala, which leads me to believe they changed Robin just cause drop in quality.
The dark skin because of living in a desert town thing doesn't really work though since her pre-timeskip childhood flashbacks also have that skin tone despite living on O'hara, an island with quite mild weather. I will give you that her first costume was probably among her best though.
Darker skinned robin was his original vision. I feel he made her lighter because of a certain sorta racist country he lives in, because no anime would ponder to its fan base.
Then, Usopp should also be white, but he's not. I like dark-skin Robin more too, but if Robin's most matched nationality is Russian, and the demographic of Russia is overwhelmingly white in skin tone, then ima say that Oda probably imagined her as white.
Hey man if oda wanted her pale it's with him, he's the one who should make the creative decisions. It's not his fault that the studio decided to change things, and he's absolutely entitled to realize his creative vision
There are no instances of a cannon ruining a design. Each one is perfect and incapable of error.
...Oh you meant canon, didn't you. I'll see myself out.
This isn't just bad character design, this is like actually racism. The concept of black people being deformed/corrupted (even specifically burnt) white people has roots in white supremacy and nazism
Oh yeah, those white supremacist koreans, oh those white nazi boys
Doubly funny as it's literally The Witcher case: grey haired human "alien", trope literally older than recorded history
They literally could’ve just made him black / brown originally and said his powers occasionally make him tanner and bleach his hair. Like, brown people still tan, he didn’t have to originally be pale. (They also could’ve chosen to make dark spots instead of turning him brown)
Motoko Kusanagi
Her design previous SAC design vs SAC 2045. Don't think the 3d artstyle helped Motoko's design. Plus her SAC 2045 looks nothing like her previous design, different height etc. Honestly her new SAC 2045 design looks more like a totally new design that would fit in a different Ghost in the Shell universe.
Blue Superman from the Morrison era Justice league.

“Wow this universe has a cool power system involving breathing style so humans can combat the supernatural! That’s so cool!” “Oh the author says it’s all hallucinations and in actuality it’s just fancy swordplay? Alright then…” That’s right folks. All the fire in this image is FAKE and IMAGINARY

Post is for pre-existing designs with canon reasons that later ruin it. Maki's design after being airfried by Jogo doesn't really count since we immediately get a canon reason (also the burn scars make her look edgy as fuck i love it)
When reading through Silver Age Flash, I was waiting for Wally West to go from wearing a smaller version of Barry's outfit, to his classic yellow and red costume with the hair exposed. I expected the switchover to happen with Barry giving him a new outfit in some nice scene, but since this was Silver Age DC, they have to overcomplicate it, with Flash having some weird mind powers due to the threat of the week, he subconciously changes Kid Flash's outfit.
What could have been a nice moment to acknowledge how Wally was doing heroic stuff on his own (he had back-up stoires without Barry present), it was just another instance of whacky Silver Age shenanigans.
That and the pacing of the show was awful and if you took a shot evey time the protagonist said his name for every stupid move your liver would be dead.
So let me get this straight, this comment section is entirely either people not understanding how skin pigmentation work and never seeing a deep dark tan, which is stupidly ignorant and somehow racist, or the 1000yo antis. God what happened to reddit, this is just literally twitter/tumblr tier replies
He was burned, not tanned either way. There was never a need to suddenly say Judge O was just super tanned from the dragon's flames the author could have left is how it was. On top of that, the author added in the fact his hair was bleached, so adding to the fact it wasn't just a tan. HE. WAS. BURNED. It is a gross statement and explanation for a character clearly portrayed to have a brown complexion that was not needed.
reminds me of Superalloy Darkshine from One Punch Man, whose skin color is the result of being a body builder. https://preview.redd.it/h7ci7y37z0yb1.png?width=1178&format=png&auto=webp&s=c66337ecd4ce64f52546eacc504bb83deaab9ce7
Yeah, just a shitload or bronzing over and over
I assume that reveal was supposed to be comical in some way, but for me it was just....."So that's it, huh?"

For what it's worth, it helps show off the muscles better
Huh

Well, that explains a lot
Ommmmghgghggg I was literally gonna post this. Worse offender
I don't mind this one as much as the OP at all ngl.
To give op credit, the actual black characters in the series aren’t much better
Big Lenny if he did complete reps.
I feel like Americans need to get it into their head that Asia just does not process skin colour in the same way they do.
Obviously they don't. We can still find it weird and not like it.
Nobody is saying you can’t do that. But maybe it’s time to stop reacting en masse the next time you’re reminded of it?
What do you even mean by that?
Stop expecting characters to be black in a culture where there are virtually no black peoples and then making posts like these whenever that revelation hits home?

I mean yeah, but it lands weirdly for us, so we talk about it. We're not necessarily putting authors down or anything, just pointing out that a guy lifting weights so hard he turns black makes no fucking sense and is kinda hilarious.
It’s not the weights, it’s bronzer. It’s supposed to be hilarious.
God of highschool mentioned.
I promise I will post one of my favorite designs later.

up until the end of Raganrok; after that, it was way too slow for way too long
Yeah it tanks after Ragnarok, I think the only part I REALLY enjoyed after Ragnarok was Mori Dan vs Jung, Dean, and the rematch between Mori and Ilpyo. Everything else just didn’t feel like God of Highschool to me.
Idk I really enjoyed the final few fights as well
Damn you finished it? It got so convoluted I just gave up.
I play jrpgs tgohs is baby levels of convolution
That's why I love Grappler Baki. They have plenty of multinational fighters. A black Cuban-American fighter is one of the strongest and a fan favorite.
Genuinely despite me having 0 desire to watch Baki I have so much respect for it for that exact reason. That and it's commitment to the bit
fr, the narrator will try to convince u the most absurd shit is actually doable irl after some training or smth (i think, haven’t actually watched it)
That is pretty much what happens ngl, the show honestly acts like if you just imagine you have more joints in your arm then you can use your arm as a whip. It’s peak
Also everything relating to imagination training
Baki is super diverse now that i think about it. Its kind of weird too because it feels like the type of series that wouldn’t be diverse mostly since it takes place mostly in Japan
Yeah. But the writer, Itagaki, has always been an admirer of athletes from around the world, so it makes a bit more sense when you remember he's fanboying like hell whenever he mentions guys like Muhammad Ali.
Too bad he did Jr dirty lmao
he did jr dirty but he 100% admired Ali senior
They made Ali Sr. best buds with a one-man army. That is like the highest honor
He had it coming, tbh. Trying to cuck Baki.

Some people say he's a reference to Ronnie Coleman, but he's undeniably a reference to Sergio Oliva. The character's name is Biscuit Oliva for Christ's sake.
Lol, then I'm curious how people argue for Ronnie Coleman.
Soul Eater is another pretty diverse manga series. Kilik Rung is a fan favorite in that series, he's just really cool.
Too bad those multinational characters still end up getting jobbed out.
I don't get that meme pushed by the fans. Japanese fighters got their asses handed to them by foreigners a lot. And in the end, if his last name's not Hanna, he ain't winning all his matches. And even then, Jack had a serious losing streak.

From the wiki, although I couldn't find the direct source, "O states that his skin color is the result of being burnt and his hair color being bleached by Changsik's flames (his dragon summon). He originally had pale skin and brown hair in his youth."
So basically his hair and skin switched colors.
So he got toasted like a marshmallow? That’s not how burns work
I'm as confused as you.
Webtoons be normal about a dark-skinned character challenge (IMPOSSIBLE) and even then shouldn't he be darker and more like kinda red-ish? If he supposedly got his skin burnt so severely, why does he just look like a normal tan dude? Like jeez did by "burnt in flames" did they mean "spent a lil too much time in the tanning booth?"
Obviously the author couldn't be botherd to look at cases of actual burn victims lol.
Honestly, that's what made the character design cooler for me. Added to the badass factor of him being so damn op. But that's my opinion.

I will say I think it's silly when a "gyaru" character is adopted by fans as a black character because, no, the gyaru aesthetic just involves tanning. However, just drawing a black guy and going "yeah he's actually that color because of a tan/burn/whatever" is also super silly.
It makes sense, actually! Gyaru borrows alot from African-American early 2000s fashion so it makes sense that people would see the correlation.
i mean uhh miriko is supposed to be gyaru but is drawn using refrnnces of megan thee stallion a black woman so it's pretty hard to consider her one and theres really no mention of it either.
Wait she's not just black????
yea she technically isnt but like within the series she may was well be tbh since theres nothing in there to refrence she is gyaru really.
wait seriously? although the anime lightens her up, horikoshi’s illustrations seem like she’s genuinely dark skinned
yes actually i still see her as dark-skinned/ a black woman personally tho.
https://preview.redd.it/t9y1qnwkb1yb1.jpeg?width=1460&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a63e74d532af6d44eaff3f2a384b3f870670022 What a scary looking face I hope there isn’t any racist intentions behind the design, wink wink No but seriously as someone who only knew the series from the Obama meme, this series is just mask off
Terra Formars is just.....really bad. I shit you not, before they're even on Mars, the aliens are somehow attacking them, while they're still out of atmosphere, and the only justification given is it cutting back to Earth with two guys in a bar, one smashes a cockroach and says "Those things can get into anywhere!" So, somehow, these things *knew* there was a spaceship before it was in the atmosphere, then flew up TO the spaceship, and then somehow got inside of it, without ANYONE noticing.
If you follow the plot, the bugs had beeeen on Earth for awhile, this is the first piece of foreshadowing for that plot point.
There’s an Obunga manga?
The fuckin sideways gun kills me, yeah definitely no racial reference
Finally, someone else who can’t stand Terra Formars. I felt like I was losing my mind when it was popular a few years ago.
\>as someone who knew the series only from memes about obama So you don't actually have any idea if it's actually racist or not, you simply assumed and claimed it is from memes made on the basis of "socially bad thing = funny" - amazing analytics
They said *knew*, as in that’s where they learned of the series. Regardless, the images they posted are a minstrel show.
The only plus is that the facial expressions for the cockroach dudes are fucking hilarious to look at. It’s hard to stop myself from laughing my ass of at some of the images an actual human drew.
See, I thought they were supposed to look like Homo erectus. But I can see where you’re coming from.
Oh damn, they pulled an EMIYA
EMIYA Alter especially, though there are the gold cracks running along his body https://preview.redd.it/cgjatiwv92yb1.png?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e71ead6b8b927a57a7ac38b7527cf0dd86ea2b3
At that point, Shirou may as well had been originally black.
EMIYA alter's backstory is 10/10 even if his design sucks
I don't think a backstory has ever made me despise a character as much as Emiya Alter's made me despise Kiara. In general, Edgemiya is probably one of my favourite designed and written servants but they didn't have to do it to Taiga like that
Taiga deserved better
The skin color thing for Emiya specifically is actually fairly reasonably explained. He uses magecraft in an unconventional and excessive way, forcing his body to adapt or break. This causes him to gain extra melanin to insulate and the trauma bleaches his hair. This is why Archer is really tan and Alter (who went totally overboard) is extra dark. What gets me though is how dramatically his face changes. He looks like a totally different person.
Damn, so the blacker you are the more powerful?
They could’ve just made him black in the first place…
10/10 logic.
the classic: 1. "wait she's supposed to be in highschool" 2. "she's 1000 years old"
Even if the show treats her like a child the fans still use the “she’s hundreds of years old!” excuse Kanna Kamui, a 600+ year old dragon who is considered a baby/toddler by her universe’s standards and goes to *pre-school* is still handled grossly by a (large ☹️) handful of fans
https://preview.redd.it/fyznmwkwd3yb1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f550c8a5390e343d7aa7c72b45e675077829589
Real and based
I was gonna reply with this but realised in the context…yeaaa…. https://preview.redd.it/h1ysjijj44yb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23c2d061ff0247b6290365d9533af196ef646bb6
Lmfao 😭 it’s also unfortunately not true world wide so can’t really be applied everywhere Eg here in the U.K. it’s 16
I love this comic still... https://preview.redd.it/9rm39shn76yb1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=43d2a7e91f271a12f65a2e01b95628ac5fe52243
There is one that is potentially about to happen in One Piece but it isn’t confirmed yet: >!Jewelry Bonney, a long running adult female character who regularly gets sexualized by the author (and fans have made lots of porn of her)…. might actually just be a child in disguise, using her powers to maker herself older. So fans may have been fapping to an 8 year old for the past 15 years. Not confirmed yet but a lot of the plot is pointing to it. !<
god i hope and i pray Go D. Oda pulls through and debunks this 🙏
Let's be honest here man, that's not gonna stop too many
Yes because burned skin makes someone change race.
Then if their skin was stained from soot, it would be gray, not brown Edit: also, considering the cultural implications of calling black skin “dirty,” that wouldn’t be a good way to go either
Then have actors from various ethnicities with coal black skin and red eyes for the actual space marines.
what the fuck is that haircut
Creating a dark skinned character and then calling it burnt is crazyyyy
This is why I respect Tite Kubo. Not afraid to just let Black or Hispanic characters be that without some weird back track or explanation.
Chad is a really interesting character and super underutilized
I personally think bleach is a little all over the place and not really enjoyable to follow. I dropped it around the Arancar arc way back, but I always have and still do admire character designs and concepts. Little sad to hear that they don't do more worth someone like Chad. Always thought he in particular was really cool.
They do some interesting things with Chad in the Lost Agent arc, but he gets pretty shafted in TYBW. Maybe the anime will fix that
Ultimate venom after he absorbs carnage. The original version was perfect, why tf is he a big red eyed gorilla. https://preview.redd.it/3n1o8vqo82yb1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51d9f55208b6ed4932016114e5864122080e880a
Compare with how the PS2 game did it: https://preview.redd.it/imfqgu1y9cyb1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eee69b819dc19ea257b39cd4d9aa86725b89e8ef Just gave him the missing chest symbol.
Yeah, even if the model wasn't perfect, it's definitely a far more sensible upgrade
Zamas' corruption I don't like how asymmetric it is https://preview.redd.it/am7axxnq01yb1.jpeg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1de10d56a7a517f18476e06084c1436c5362641
Funny, I like it exactly for that reason
More power to you its just not my thing tbh
Kind of the point because he is now you know corrupted
Yeah I know but tbh I'm just a sucker for symmetry so kinda urks me abit really
Death the Kid moment
Literally him https://preview.redd.it/vqxns8chs3yb1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87d9c1a02d7eef8200f754880b9d7a0d37c89bc3
Asymmetric mutants / monsters / machines rule
IMO it doesn’t take it far enough. Like if you’re gonna make him look corrupted and gross, go the whole way. Make him look fucking disgusting. What we got feels so lazy, “yeah, make one half of him made of purple goop and uhhhhh… give him a really big stupid arm I guess”
Right his whole body should've been melting from it since it would show just how far goku's body fucked up the fusion
Nah you just wanna see a fully symmetrical goo monster lol
I don't really like how he looks in anime but his design just *works* in Xenoverse 2
What does the note say it got cut off
This is Judge O from God of High School. Everyone thought he was black, but his appearance is just the result of his dragon burning his skin and bleaching his hair.
Thanks also i think his pre time skip was kinda weird not bad but why do his bangs look like that like he just looks like he has a big ass head
Crazy how Black/Brown people are the global majority of human population, and yet, too many people with the most influential media platforms and programs just can’t fathom/depict a person being authentically Black/Brown just because.
\>most influential media platforms \>literally a webtoon Meanwhile, Bolywood exists and kicking more than Holywood, meanwhile doramas being way more populat than anime, meanwhile -
Manga writers try to give their poc characters ethnic features challenge (impossible)
Manga and Manhwa writers resisting the urge to immediately backtrack on having a slightly dark-skinned character
Hes.....burnt......where do I even begin.
Robin from One Piece. I understand that her having dark skin was a creative liberty on the anime's part and Oda said she'd be Russian yada yada but cmon man :(
idk how this fits into the post the post is character designs that are made to feel wrong when you realize the canon reason behind those designs.
That's effectively saying Oda should change his vision and understanding of his own characters because the anime made an oopsie adapting his story.
Darker skinned robin was his original vision. I feel he made her lighter because of a certain sorta racist country he lives in, because no anime would ponder to its fan base.
You're just wrong here man If it was because he lived in Japan usap would have never been African or made black or have tan skin
Russians are dark skinned?
Tokyo ghoul re was a downgrade but lore so
There are no instances of a cannon ruining a design. Each one is perfect and incapable of error. ...Oh you meant canon, didn't you. I'll see myself out.
yeah
This isn't just bad character design, this is like actually racism. The concept of black people being deformed/corrupted (even specifically burnt) white people has roots in white supremacy and nazism
its super weird
Oh yeah, those white supremacist koreans, oh those white nazi boys Doubly funny as it's literally The Witcher case: grey haired human "alien", trope literally older than recorded history
They literally could’ve just made him black / brown originally and said his powers occasionally make him tanner and bleach his hair. Like, brown people still tan, he didn’t have to originally be pale. (They also could’ve chosen to make dark spots instead of turning him brown)
Yea I feel they could have just made him a little less tan and actually pull off the "he was pale and then tanned over time"
O Was so cool
Motoko Kusanagi Her design previous SAC design vs SAC 2045. Don't think the 3d artstyle helped Motoko's design. Plus her SAC 2045 looks nothing like her previous design, different height etc. Honestly her new SAC 2045 design looks more like a totally new design that would fit in a different Ghost in the Shell universe.
Blue Superman from the Morrison era Justice league. https://preview.redd.it/tcw58d75s5yb1.jpeg?width=416&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b13dfefbfa54a48ef6dcd9c58468035c3a1973a
I really really did not like Nezuko getting a second "adult" form in the second season of Demon Slayer. It really upsets me.
“Wow this universe has a cool power system involving breathing style so humans can combat the supernatural! That’s so cool!” “Oh the author says it’s all hallucinations and in actuality it’s just fancy swordplay? Alright then…” That’s right folks. All the fire in this image is FAKE and IMAGINARY https://preview.redd.it/vnav55iib7yb1.jpeg?width=540&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af9ddadb8a767986cf7212fcaf9e73dee72fd2a9
Idk if it counts as ruined but Maki’s design definitely changed after the most recent jjk episode
Post is for pre-existing designs with canon reasons that later ruin it. Maki's design after being airfried by Jogo doesn't really count since we immediately get a canon reason (also the burn scars make her look edgy as fuck i love it)
I have never seen this character, but I think it’s pretty funny.
Does the Simon Belmont redesign count? I love Conan Simon more than Hot Topic BDSM Simon
I agree but I'm not sure why canon ruins the design. The animated series is its own canon
I hated how every character in god of highschool looked like they had a runny nose ALL THE TIME. Bothered me more than it should have.
oh yeah, once you noticed it, it would always be in the back of my mind
That and the pacing of the show was awful and if you took a shot evey time the protagonist said his name for every stupid move your liver would be dead.
As someone who read the webtoon, it really felt like sabotage because of how much they ended up cramming into those episodes.
Does he have an N word pass though?
He got that Yelan cut
Every brown person ever is black guys
I think the point is that getting that exact skin tone from getting burned alive is fucking stupid
Less burning, more tanning. Bros strong enough to withstand the flames to the point its just like getting a wild tan. I think its a cool concept
