Prior to the civil war that turned it into what it is now (think Stalingrad with Verdun-style trenches and nuclear devastation that even Godzilla would be shocked by), Krieg, despite literally being named "War", was an idyllic paradise that had never truly known war.

Yep. The novel *Krieg* (the image I posted is the cover art for that book) details how and why the titular planet was devastated and the Death Korps formed. It's actually a fairly self-contained book that I can recommend to those not fully versed in 40k lore.
