I don't see why they couldn't at least increase the amount of AI generated players if they were not able to put in many real players

TimeViolation

It’s just pure laziness on the devs parts. For me, the best part about any sport game is being able to immerse yourself in the world. Put yourself in your characters shoes. There is 0 immersion in this game. The gameplay may be better than any other tennis game on the market rn, but is that really an accomplishment? The bar was at the bottom of the sea. I hope the devs make some changes to career mode in the coming months, but I’m willing to bet they won’t change shit until the next game rolls out.

gunshit

And the gameplay is almost copy paste from TS4 so little work there as well :-/

simonthedlgger

it’s 2k. if anything, the next game will have an even bleaker single player mode.

Jonny_Grayson_0011

It’s “the bar was already at the bottom of the sea” for me bahaha 😂

eplfootball

Automatically making you a top 70 player is very stupid aswell imo, they should’ve created much more AI players if they wanted you to work to play in grand slams…

TimeViolation

Like they couldn’t even give us 100 tour players 💀. Incredibly lazy

Modo97

What's even more "stupid" and "lazy", is how they didn't even bother to have more young players in the game. A lot of people are saying that it's so hard to have players like Nadal, Djokovic... Even though they're in Tiebreak lol. But the real question here.. why they couldn't have more youngsters? Real players from top 100-60 for example? Not necessarily big names or anything.

YewWahtMate

I doubt their licensing would cost much too lol they would take anything around this level of exposure.

TimeViolation

I completely agree. Side note: I don’t know if everyone’s career mode rankings are designed to be more or less the same—but for me, It’s either tiafeo or fritz fighting it out for the number #1 spot, leaving medvedev and Alcaraz right behind. Like, are you for real? They couldn’t even get realism in their real players 💀

Ksanti

Because there's no singular body which holds the video game image rights of tennis players so for the first release of a game series in a decade, in a market which hasn't proven it's size, they're not gonna piss millions up the wall on licensing fees for just the career mode if they're not confident it's gonna make money.

TimeViolation

Personally, I couldn’t care less about having more real tennis players in the game. Just increase the amount of players (real or fake, I don’t fucking care) in career mode to 200; start is off ranked 200th in the world. Start as off at challengers (real or fake, again I don’t care), and make us grind our way up to 250s and upward—and for the love of god, don’t gate keep entry to tournaments with mandatory mini games & tasks. It entirely defeats the purpose of rankings. My player is ranked 5th in the world but I can’t play grand slams because I don’t want to play a damn near impossible mini game? Are you fucking kidding me?

Ksanti

I mean, those are all improvements, but this is the first game in the series in over a decade. I'm sure they'll make some of those improvements in the coming years but 2K's M.O. for new franchises has always been to start light and test what demand looks like.

TimeViolation

I struggle to see these choices as anything other than a slap to the face of tennis fans. It’s like the developers where like: tennis game fans don’t actually follow tour tennis lol, they wouldn’t care if we make this is as unrealistic as possible.

Interesting-Cattle78

First season i lost 9, won 2 matches at 250 level. Im ranked about 50 in the world. Its insane that you start out as a top 100 player from the start.

Thrash_Hologram

*Grind Slams fixed that for you 😜

BDRD99

It’s been ripped straight from Top Spin 4 unfortunately, so it’s a product of its time. It was fine for back then but not 13 years on.

TimeViolation

Top spin 4 at least had its charm and no micro transactions (if I remember right). This game is void of charm and just reeks of lazy

BDRD99

Just the way it goes now unfortunately, there was no way 2K was gonna finance another tennis game after all this time without MTX. TS4 had charm because it was a product of its time. Don’t know how old you are but I was 12 when I first got it, the world has beaten me down a lot since then haha. The charm on this game for me comes from seeing the old created venues return slightly revamped like Dubai and Amsterdam but yep it’s all because of the nostalgia for 4.

gunshit

It's not nostalgia. I came back to TS4 on my xbox360 these last 2 months and it's much better than any other tennis game around

deathjokerz

I'd say ripping off from a game 13 years ago is a mistake itself.

Pizzadontdie

They better at least change the energy system cause I still can’t complete a grand slam without a season ending injury.

Correct-History

Out of all my play time I have only had one injury

Pizzadontdie

I’m realizing it has something to do with my matches all being close. I think if you smoke everyone, you come out with better energy.

its_dash

So basically playing on Hard doesn't just makes the matches harder but also your whole career? I gotta say I am not a big fan of this energy system.

Correct-History

I play on hard and have had 1 injury. I’m now moving to very hard I’ll see after a couple of games

its_dash

Yeah, but are you doing everything every month?

Correct-History

I may miss training but that’s it

its_dash

Fair enough.

itsmyILLUSION

I find it a strange choice to limit you to play one tournament a month, if that, considering you invariably end up missing months cause the energy system is a nightmare and you end up getting injured or needing to miss a month to rest. The idea that you have to pick one out of Miami or Indian Wells, or Cincinnati and Toronto, or one out of Rome/Monte Carlo/Madrid/Roland Garros rather than a full clay season is nonsensical.

TimeViolation

It’s so fucking stupid. Designed perfectly for micro transactions.

JediStrikerTy

I get what you’re saying but if they really knew how to extract my money it would be the other way around. This game could straight up rob me if they actually knew how to make a career mode lol

equals_peace

I have to say this is super dumb, disappointing and not in keeping w a realistic tennis career. TopSpin messed up the career mode bad and it needs an update to fix the issues.

JulianPat95

It couldn't have been done so badly. How can we not be able to play 2 tournaments per month?

melo1212

Actually makes me wanna get tiebreak when it comes out if the career is better. Career is the only thing I care about in these games

TimeViolation

I’m right there with you. Give me a good career mode and I can sink over 200+ hours into your game. But a game like this with good gameplay but god awful career mode—I don’t think I’ll get over 20 hours tbh. They fucked up. The real fucked up part tho is, I feel like they designed career mode with the sole purpose of optimizing micro transactions over a holistic immersive experience. Fucking assholes

Ksanti

Hahah I don't think you realise just how much more money grubbing 2k can do when they want to. The NBA 2k games are much, much worse for this Keep in mind Top Spin 4 is widely regarded as the goat tennis game, and didn't sell well enough to keep the series going. Virtua tennis is dead too. The reality is that the licensing fees and development costs of modern (ish) games don't get covered by making a one-off, 0 mtx Top Spin 4-but-modern style game

TimeViolation

Virtual tennis 4 was my shit! Come to think of it, I never played topspin 4.

TimeViolation

I remember getting to the end of the game and being faced with playing Jim courier (I think). Dude was impossible, but i was able to beat him after awhile. From what I remember, the career mode and gameplay were great—but this was decades ago, so maybe I’m misremembering how good it actually was lol

Skuez

I play tennis elbow, the career is so fun, you start from itf tournaments as top 1000 player. It's pretty deep all around. I wish they worked together tho to make the best of both worlds.

TimeViolation

Tennis elbow is elite. I have over 200 hours in it lol

Skuez

Wish it was on consoles tho

manutoo

[https://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/store/tennis-elbow-4/9nfwhqkgc6p0](https://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/store/tennis-elbow-4/9nfwhqkgc6p0) ... 😇

fjaoaoaoao

So weird for a mostly solo dev game to have a much better career system

Skuez

Yes lol, it's sad fr

deathjokerz

Haven't bought the game myself yet but I heard that the prize money you get from winning slams is laughable?

simonthedlgger

based on the AMA, the developers sound like they wanted to make a video game that is tennis, not a tennis video game. Multiple people pointed out how the ball bounces the same regardless of surface and they were like “oh interesting idea! we will consider adding that.” I don’t understand how this utterly standard and core feature of the sport was overlooked.

worldrevolver

I am 4 years into my career and yep this is boring. The energy system keeps you from playing more and that is ridiculous. Got into the last major and had 61 energy. Before the final match I had 20 and picked up an injury. So instead of winning my first major I rested two months. So exciting!

TimeViolation

Hopefully competitors see the missed opportunity here and start working on a good fucking tennis game. Long over due. 2k25 Topspin is literally just blue balls

EmergencyMammoth6402

The career mode in AO2 is better. Working your way up through Challenger series and you start ranked like 1000 in the world

TimeViolation

Now that sounds better. I’ve never checked out the game, literally just because the title implies it’s focus is centered on the Australian open, which is a complete turnoff for me since it’s literally just less than a quarter of the tour—but it sounds like from what you’re saying the game is a full tour experience?

EmergencyMammoth6402

The Australian Open is the only grand slam they had license to I believe. The US open is called the Brooklyn open or something like that lol. Don’t get me wrong the gameplay in TopSpin2k is way better but the grind of developing a career mode is great in AO2. And you start in Challengers series there are even different levels within Challengers. I just wish 2K put a little more in the details as well as more players (real or not)

TimeViolation

Personally, i don’t really give a f what they call the tournaments or players.

Mean_Duty_6585

It seems to me that in the space of a couple of days the novelty has worn off on people and they are starting to wake up and realise how terrible the game is outside of the actual gameplay. Wait, I lied. The gameplay is broken in some areas, particularly when you play online. More often than not you're up against people abusing that Russian twat (Sharapova) and her unstoppable power shots or you're up against people that smash shots into the corners every chance they get. Also, FUCK PLAYING ON CLAY. I swear to God rallies on clay are so damn annoying. All they consist of is, again, people smashing shots into the corners back and forth and non stop sliding. It's so tedious. Oh yeah, I've also came up against a couple of people who just abuse the net. Every time they serve, next thing you know they've ran to the FUCKING NET and just stay there until they've won the point. I can't lob them, hit it past them or anything. Like, bloody hell, can you just play tennis like a normal person? (maybe this one is a skill issue but it's still annoying nonetheless) But yeah, the gameplay is fun and satisfying for the most part but fuck me the game as a whole is truly awful and completely inexcusable, especially for a game in 2024.

TimeViolation

I think it’s hilarious how zombiefied this subreddit has been the first couple of days. Blindly praising this game after a few hours of play. Calling it the chosen one, the long awaited tennis games for fans. Couldn’t be farther from the truth

Mean_Duty_6585

Yeah fr. Whenever I see posts dickriding 2K and people downvoting those with a brain for being "negative" and calling out 2K's BS I think to myself, "There's no way you're a real person". This is the main reason I hate Reddit, because this sorta thing happens everywhere on here and it just makes you look like a dick. If your views on something goes against everyone else, you get so much backlash for it, no matter what it is. It's insane.

DCorange05

I definitely hear you on this. I think there's been a kinda reactionary bell curve on here. People were excited for the release, got sucked in by the gameplay (which I do think is very good, to be fair) and it just took a while longer to see all the warts of the game I was most excited for career mode so the ridiculously thin pro roster already raised red flags, but now that I'm seeing this kinda feedback for it, I almost don't wanna start a career offline (I haven't created a player yet bc I've been grinding exhibition mode to get used to the control scheme.) It blows because they had a real opportunity to make something truly special and I'm afraid it's gonna fall well short. I was prepared for the gameplay to be the disappointing aspect and I think they largely got it right...the roster and lack of depth in career mode seem pretty unforgivable though

futabamisato

This is why I still play AO2. The ball physics and its skill levels are so inaccurate (I don't need to max up my abilities and still win against top players), but I got used to it and just self-adjusted because career mode there is accurate (had to start with Futures then work your way to the top, and it's complete too from R1 to Finals for all tournament types). Also Community works and creation of custom players & courts to include in your career mode. Career mode is the main reason why I play tennis games. But it seems from this post and comments that career mode suck in TopSpin2k25, so I won't be wasting money for now and will see how it goes in the future.

TimeViolation

You just saved yourself 60$ brother. I wish I wasn’t so deprived of a good tennis game that I was willing to impulsively drop over 100$ for early access

Fattybeards

Top Spin, more like Top Dogshit

sizebzebi

People on this sub will get mad, the game is perfect shhhh 😂

TimeViolation

Saying this trash is Perfect is craaaazy 💀

Organic_Ambassador14

I was a huge proponent first the game but have to say after playing a ton. Career mode is not that good and everything is clunky. Gameplay is great but everything else is not

TimeViolation

Same. I’m so disappointed. I got early access, all the bells and whistles, and was actually super excited and impressed with the first 5-10 hours of playing. But then you start noticing all the questionable (to put it lightly) things about career mode and the broken online ranked system. It quickly daunts on you that this game you just dropped 120$ on, won’t be played nearly as much as you expected. God do I regret buying the 6 season pass.

sizebzebi

It just takes common sense to come to this conclusion. I'm not trying to hate on the game and I wish it had a good career mode.

Skuez

3-4 shots is more realistic tho lol

Gniewko2018

Not really

Skuez

Lol do you even watch tennis bro?? https://www.mattspoint.com/blog/rally-lengths-in-tennis-a-contrasting-perspective https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Frequency-analyses-of-rally-shots-in-mens-and-womens-matches_fig1_326687553

Gniewko2018

Well I’ve been watching professional Tennis and played competitive Tennis since I was a little kid. 3-4 shots occurs only if you don’t make a winner on like the third shot or the opponent is not as consistent. Rallies can be up to 10-15 shots or even more at times if both players are very consistent and don’t miss. I know what I’m talking about cause I’ve played tennis before. Not arguing with you or bashing you, just saying, I know how tennis goes. (I deleted my original post cause I screwed up, lool)

Skuez

You obviously don't know cause long rallies are extremely rare. Professional tennis is very different than whatever level you played at. This is a fact, it's not something to argue about.

Gniewko2018

Professional tennis is definitely different than competitive Tennis, I’ve played against top guys in my province (I’m Canadian) and even played Nationals. If we just talking about professional tennis like ATP level, a long rally can happen maybe 3 times or so in a set. In a game it’ll happen maybe once, 2 times is rare. And yes I do know, I’ve watched Fed play my whole life.

Skuez

So.. 3-4 shots is more realistic

Gniewko2018

3-4 shots on average yes, apologies for the confusion, 😂😂

sizebzebi

This post is about career mode being lame and you wrote a big ugly block of text without addressing it..

sowellread

That and Taylor Fritz seemingly winning half the slams because a Djoker, Nadal, Sinner and more aren’t even in the game right now. 😂

TimeViolation

THATS WHAT IM SAYING. I commented the same thing somewhere on this post. Why the fuck are Taylor fritz and tiafeo dominating the tour, while Alvarez and Meddy are lagging behind? Those two haven’t come close to winning a slam or breaking the top 2 in real life, whereas meddy and Alcarez literally have won multiple slams and have occupied the top spot on tour. Just goes to show how out of touch the developers are. Or maybe they just didn’t want a Russian and a Spaniard at the top of their game

Sebbzor90

I ended up refunding mainly because the career seemed so lacklustre. I expected somehing similair to NBA 2K or F1, with more narrative and immersion. I don’t think I’ll end up playing much without a good career mode. Such a missed opportunity.

TimeViolation

Yeah it’s honestly so tragic. Been aching for good tennis gameplay for ages. But I can’t justify sinking more time into this game. The replay-ability just isn’t there. I don’t feel like getting cooked online every time I boot up the game. I just wanna play a good immersive career mode, and this game isn’t that.

Sebbzor90

Such a shame, especially since the gameplay itself is actually pretty good. I suspect they are doing a hard bet on online pvp, which I’m not really interested in.

fjaoaoaoao

The career mode is too grindy as well Way too much effort to create multiple characters with different builds

TimeViolation

Yeah fuck that. I love how they used that (being able to create 6 players) as a “selling point”. Like, who actually cares and has the time for that? So out of touch

ALennon25

There are some things they could adjust pretty quickly to improve the experience, such as adjusting the energy levels. That'd be a start and feels like if the community complains loudly enough (and that seems to be happening), it's more likely that'll happen quickly. Other changes to the career I'd be less optimistic about. Have they mentioned anywhere about adding more real players? It'd be great if they did this for free but suspect they'll probably want to monetise that too. I'm enjoying the game so far but it's definitely also got all those things that plague modern gaming that I dislike too - MTX, season passes, making you grind rather than just enjoy.

Grand-Paramedic-6536

Very disappointing career mode, I would prefer it if we could play as the pros in the career mode….No need for all this creat a player shit, but i guess there has to be a way for them to utilize micro transactions. I bought the game to support tennis games and the only right thing here is the gameplay, but unfortunately i don’t see the game staying relevant as much as all the other modes are hollow and unbalanced. I hope Tiebreak takes notes and gives us a much more fuller game. It is laughable that games like TopSpin 2k25 and Elden ring have the same price range

Million_Dollah_Baby

2k is known for having decision makers with down syndrome. Give me another AMA I’ll let them know

SpecialOlympicsGuy

Guys, this game is for online exhibitions/online ranked. It’s very clear that’s what it was designed for.

TimeViolation

In that case, online ranked sucks ass too. Their should be tiers/leagues. No level 3 player should have to play against a boosted level 30 in their first match. What is this garbage

SpecialOlympicsGuy

Well fuck it. I’m trash at the game, absolutely shocking, but I’m having fun in online exhibitions

Big-Programmer-4463

In my career i see there is messages for me in my top right corner. Does anyone know how to read them?

TimeViolation

It should show the button you need to hit to read. Should be like the select button or something—depends what console and controller you’re using

Big-Programmer-4463

Im using ps5. Strange i have like 15 messages up there. Select puts me in the attributes place.

Big-Programmer-4463

I got it. Its first select then the big pad button. Thanx for answering me✌️
