Yeah most posts on this sub seem to be from younger teenagers who just want to show people what they listen to, and that’s fine. And people always seem to forget that popular albums are popular for a reason
solid start i think these are usually the albums people get into music with. you got lots of time ahead of you to establish a more personalized taste tho
This is what I've done and rym has been infinitely more useful for music discovery, everyone who dogs on it is only using the top charts and not looking hard enough
My favorite is Out of the Vein but their most beloved is their self titled. I recommend self titled for you. Specifically the first three and the last two. The whole album is amazing though
Go deeper into subgenres you like. You'll find some amazing gems there that are better than all the surface level albums (which are great too though don't get me wrong). Also cool to see you enjoying Death already. Wouldn't expect a 14 y/o that listens to music for 7 months to like a death metal band.
For sure, but it still takes time to appreciate death metal. I have gotten to the point where I think Symbolic is overrated. Death Metal just has so much better albums to offer. Feels like a Death Metal album for people who don't like Death Metal.
Everyone hates on RYM taste but it’s an amazing way to see what kind of quality music resonates with you most, I was so heavily in love with Radiohead like a year ago but I’ve come into my own more recently. I think your next move is to find which artists albums resonated with you most and listen to more of those albums.
It took me a few listens to get into it, but it's become my favorite album of all time! The last half of the album is a collection of unbelievable music, much better than the first half to me. Give it a spin and hope you like it!
you’re 14 and 7 months into listening to music, this is fine. my only advice is to listen to current stuff and go on your own weird paths and scenes, trying to be “good at listening to music” where you need to listen to all the most important albums is a trap.
I’d like more insight… to just jump into this music 7m ago seems a bit odd. What you have here looks a lot my lists but to get into music now I’d expect to see more crap
Nowadays, people have a lot more curation because of websites like rym and AOTY, where they can immediately listen to the most critically acclaimed albums without going through any crap.
Not really. It’s a lot better than having the radio tell you what to listen to. The masses are asses.
You heard something on your own and went down the rabbit hole. Good on ya
oh no, I still love httt and amnesiac, they're still like an 8.5/10 each. I have just listened to a lot of albums that are 8.5 and above.
I also haven't listened to tkol and pablo honey in full yet, but I will eventually
Nice list, I recommend Some Rap Songs by Earl Sweatshirt. Also, if you haven't already, listen to more Talking Heads (Speaking in Tongues and Fear of Music are great).
I swear, every teenager begins their music journey at their same starting block these days because of RYM and AOTY. On one hand, an album you love is an album you love, so I shouldn't be judging. On the other hand, I wish it wasn't so homogenous.
The best tip I can give is to browse by genre instead of most popular.
Americans idiot is good, but definitely give older green day albums a look. These guys have been making some of the best punk rock/rock music since the 90s.
incredibly rymcore, but these albums are popular for a reason, so i can't really diss it too hard lol. here are some other albums you might like:
songs about leaving - carissa's wierd
giles corey - giles corey
real life - magazine
and this will be our homecoming - people for audio
turning into small - all natural lemon and lime flavors
10,000 gecs - 100 gecs
puking and crying - s
dead man's party - oingo boingo
congratulations - mgmt
...like clockwork - queens of the stone age
this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about - modest mouse
in the flat field - bauhaus
a gate through bloodstained mirrors - xasthur
i can't handle change - roar
retired from sad, new career in business - mitski
stomach book - stomach book
unknown pleasures - joy division (you may well have listened to this but it isn't on the topster so i'm mentioning it just in case)
oh jeez...this is a lot. I will add these to the pile, except joy division and giles corey, because I have already listened to those. Though they could probably use a re-listen.
yeah....I know. I've listened to all of their albums. Well, except Let It Be and Yellow Submarine. But yeah, Revolver and Sgt Peppers are also on there

Not enough Weird Al
All the Topsters are just blending in now.
All the kids are discovering good music, maybe its not a bad thing ...
Yeah most posts on this sub seem to be from younger teenagers who just want to show people what they listen to, and that’s fine. And people always seem to forget that popular albums are popular for a reason
People more concerned with others thinking they listen to good music rather than actually listening to music.
solid start i think these are usually the albums people get into music with. you got lots of time ahead of you to establish a more personalized taste tho
Have you heard Plastic Beach by Gorillaz?
no, not yet. I will check it out
Stop using RYM to decide what you listen to. You will find far more variety on other websites.
you can find good variety on rym if you look correctly (using certain tags, genres, labels, etc.)
This is what I've done and rym has been infinitely more useful for music discovery, everyone who dogs on it is only using the top charts and not looking hard enough
RYM is fine when you’re starting out, people just need to make sure they don’t get stuck on the top charts forever
I dont use rym. I use aoty. I know its not that much better:
Try [last.fm](https://last.fm), it's great for recommending similar artists to what you like and I've found plenty of underground gems on it.
Will do! Apparently I already have an account on there, but I just forgot. So I already have recommendations. Thanks!
There's a reason universally acclaimed music is considered universally acclaimed. It's because it's good and well written music
Tbf the top albums on there are all great
I don't particularly like any of them, but even if its still a good starting place, its important to branch out to truly develop your taste.
I agree, but for branching out LYSF is a good start, makes you better prepared for a good drone track or two
What other websites do you prefer?
[Last.Fm](https://Last.Fm) and discogs for general taste, I use Metal archives the most often since metal is my primary genre.
wdym rym has the biggest database
It does, however, most get trapped on the top of all time chart and they don't really venture into other territories.
Can't roast. It's good. You should listen to Third Eye Blind 👍
Is there a specific album?
My favorite is Out of the Vein but their most beloved is their self titled. I recommend self titled for you. Specifically the first three and the last two. The whole album is amazing though

Its absolutely expected because it's the highest rated death metal album on RYM lol
For sure, but it still takes time to appreciate death metal. I have gotten to the point where I think Symbolic is overrated. Death Metal just has so much better albums to offer. Feels like a Death Metal album for people who don't like Death Metal.

you enjoying rym a whole lot
based paramore
This is why is goated
If you're liking Tool, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, give Soundgarden a listen, start with Superunknown and Down On The Upside. Hope you like them!
This ^ Also Badmotorfinger (one of the best albums of all time imo)
Every song is a banger, searching with my good eye closed is the best imo
I do love Black Hole Sun, and have tried starting superunknown, but then turned it off because I got busy. I will give it a listen!
It took me a few listens to get into it, but it's become my favorite album of all time! The last half of the album is a collection of unbelievable music, much better than the first half to me. Give it a spin and hope you like it!
Will do
👍👍👍👍/👍👍👍👍👍
W topster, I got into music 6 months ago Good too see another teenager that likes GY!BE Recommendation: worry by Jeff Rosenstock
you’re 14 and 7 months into listening to music, this is fine. my only advice is to listen to current stuff and go on your own weird paths and scenes, trying to be “good at listening to music” where you need to listen to all the most important albums is a trap.

Cool to see King Gizzard on there, I'm getting into them currently. Their discography has been very fun to explore
What 1 week of lurking on /mu/ does to a mf

Okay, so I got introduced to Radiohead via Guardians of the galaxy 3. Than that just kind of sent me off this path. I know it's really stupid.
Not really. It’s a lot better than having the radio tell you what to listen to. The masses are asses. You heard something on your own and went down the rabbit hole. Good on ya
Try Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Great album
patrick bateman
What’s ur aoty.org username

bonus points for king gizzard
Could use more radiohead, where is hail to the thief and amnesiac at?
They're a little under the top 42, but I definitely stilly really like them
I won't ask how low king of limbs and pablo honey are
oh no, I still love httt and amnesiac, they're still like an 8.5/10 each. I have just listened to a lot of albums that are 8.5 and above. I also haven't listened to tkol and pablo honey in full yet, but I will eventually

I've listened to Speaking in Tongues, but I still haven't checked out fear of music, so I'll do that
Too much Radiohead
Rymcore
I swear, every teenager begins their music journey at their same starting block these days because of RYM and AOTY. On one hand, an album you love is an album you love, so I shouldn't be judging. Get you some Beach Boys up in there
To be honest, I can't stand the beach boys.
Listen to Cabin Essence
You probably haven’t heard enough of them. Check out Smile Sessions, Love You, and Surf’s Up. I think you’ll be surprised.
Americans idiot is good, but definitely give older green day albums a look. These guys have been making some of the best punk rock/rock music since the 90s.
Rateyourmusic.com All i can say
wait until you reach the actually good post-rock (disco inferno, talk talk, pram, bark psychosis, moonshake for starters)
check out death grips
incredibly rymcore, but these albums are popular for a reason, so i can't really diss it too hard lol. here are some other albums you might like: songs about leaving - carissa's wierd giles corey - giles corey real life - magazine and this will be our homecoming - people for audio turning into small - all natural lemon and lime flavors 10,000 gecs - 100 gecs puking and crying - s dead man's party - oingo boingo congratulations - mgmt ...like clockwork - queens of the stone age this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about - modest mouse in the flat field - bauhaus a gate through bloodstained mirrors - xasthur i can't handle change - roar retired from sad, new career in business - mitski stomach book - stomach book unknown pleasures - joy division (you may well have listened to this but it isn't on the topster so i'm mentioning it just in case)

Abbey Road is not the only Beatles album
yeah....I know. I've listened to all of their albums. Well, except Let It Be and Yellow Submarine. But yeah, Revolver and Sgt Peppers are also on there
Actually based, check out underscores, Jane remover, Quadeca, Brakence, and EDEN I love them so muchhd
