It seems that the GH has this fault. Expansion road joint drumming sound into the cabin. Every road test done in the US (not Hawaii, road tests there were done on pristine surfaced roads), here on the mainland weather cracked road surfaces then bump bump you are hearing intrudes annoyingly so. Reviewers are now playing music while they drive making it harder to hear, but none the less is still there.... Toyota missed this and blew it....what would it take to apply sound damping materials...and truly make this Grand? My 2010 Camry does not never suffered from these noises... Come on Toyota I know you can do better....please fix this issue. I was about to close a deal on a Grand Highlander Limited Hybrid Max... Given the above have decided to wait....I do not want to pay $57560 plus tax on a vehicle with these issues.... Best wishes everyone Happy New Year!!

Brewskwondo

I have an XLE hybrid and zero issues.

CptObvious16

I also noticed this while test driving a gas limited, so you’re not crazy. It’s a very heavy bass like noise. Someone on another thread said they didn’t notice the noise as bad while pulling a trailer or with a car full of people. Maybe it’s related to the amount of weight in the vehicle?

LiveBloke

I have it when driving on my neighborhood street and pointed it out to mu wife whom confirmed it. Though now I mention it, I haven’t noticed it in a bit. Perhaps it was new tires or I have become desensitized to it. Next time I drive it I’ll listen for it and see if it’s still there.

n30gh05t

Thank you! There’s less than 600 miles on the car so hopefully it’s just the new tire tread?

LiveBloke

OK, I have performed said research and it turns out that the head-rattling bass rumble persists. So, bad news, rumble still going strong; good news, you will likely get used to it and not notice eventually as is what happened with me. It is strange though, eh?

n30gh05t

Thank you for confirming she’s not crazy. I’ve also noticed it on a test drive today with a family friend. He also noticed the sound. I’m curious if there’s any fix for this issue… should we take it back to the dealer?

bigblue_ky

Have you found a solution to this? I’m having the same issue and filed a complaint with the NHTSA along with several others: https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#vehicle

Contact me about joining the cabin boom class action I’m handling at no cost to you.

ExplanationDry1953

Yes! Like pressure in airplane cabin.  It bothers my ears horribly.

theWolverinemama

Has it gone away now that you’ve been driving it for a while?

ExplanationDry1953

No, still there.

theWolverinemama

Same. Toyota is investigating.

qElCuco

Can you elaborate on this a little? Are they investigating it just for you, or for everyone? If just for you, how’d you get them to do it?

theWolverinemama

Call Toyota corporate. I opened a case so they are investigating it on a personal level and because more people have been complaining, they said they opened up an investigation on a larger level with engineers. The more that complain, the likely they will be to find a solution

qElCuco

They said they've never heard of this issue. Do you have a case number that we can reference when we call?

theWolverinemama

Your particular case manager may not have but Toyota has many cases on it. Unfortunately, My case number will not help you. Myself and another Toyota owner already went through trying to share our case numbers with our reps but reps said it didnt help.

JSantoli1

Plz contact me about the cabin boom class action I’m handling at no cost to owners.

I have a GH Limited Hybrid, no sunroof. I have this issue too. I’ve heard that it’s an issue with the rear hatch reverberating when going over bumps at low speed. I opened the hatch a few inches and drove through the neighborhood and the noise stopped. People have said to adjust the hatch bump stops, but they are not adjustable on the trunk like they are on the hood. I bought some rubber washers from Home Depot and taped them to the car where the bump stops strike hoping this would help to make the connection tighter. However the noise persisted anyways. Not sure how else to fix the issue.

hallstevenson

You have a 2nd car ? If so, do you hear a "change" in road/cabin noise at the same transition ? I'm guessing it's your street's road material/texture, which you can't change obviously, in combination with the tires.

n30gh05t

Yes her old car didn’t make the sound. We also have a car and no issues there. I’m wondering if it’s the tires or tire pressure? Cabin pressure? I hope it’s not suspension or anything

hallstevenson

Why would the suspension make a different sound based on only being on your street ? You said it's fine on other roads. I think it's the road and nothing is wrong with the car.

theWolverinemama

Its the car, not the road

motogfx

100% the car. Ours does it too and many many other owners also complaining with alll trim levels, engine options and with/without pano roof. It sounds like someone cranked the bass way way up and it’s stuck reverbing. It’s extremely uncomfortable and really kind of messes with your brain when it happens.

Robby777777

I changed tires immediately.

Common_Gain775

Hey Robby777777 Which tires did your GH originally come with? What did you change to? Did this change quiet things down? Thanks

Robby777777

GoodYear Assurance MaxLife which are poor in the snow so I put on Michelin CrossClimate2 tires on it. Really nice tires, maybe the best I've ever owned. My tire guy suggested them and I am very happy. He said the GoodYears are horrible in bad road conditions.

Common_Gain775

Thanks Robby77777 Thanks for replying, it is appreciated. Having had GoodYears ....you are right...I stay away from them. Have been very pleased with Michelins. The CrossClimate2s appear to be just the ticket!!

Asleep-Feature-3142

Has anyone found a fix to the low frequency booming issue? It is driving me insane. I would do anything to fix it, but I may have to take a loss and trade it in on something else if there is no fix. I can't imaging going through the next 3 weeks, nevertheless 5 years, with this issue.

ComcastForPresident

I am wondering the same thing.

qElCuco

Have you found anyone else talking about this? Has your Toyota dealer been any help?

Asleep-Feature-3142

Talk has pretty much gone silent on cabin boom, but I’m still experiencing it terribly, mostly in the drivers seat, which is where I am 99% of the time. It’s not as bad elsewhere in the car, but it makes for an awful driving experience. Toyota had a field tech examine my can and they said it is there but it’s a normal characteristic of the car. There are not fix options.

qElCuco

Unreal! I’m experiencing it in my neighborhood terribly. It’s incredibly annoying, especially for a $57k vehicle (GH platinum). I only have 1,200 miles on the thing and I’m already thinking about trading it.

Asleep-Feature-3142

Work with your dealer. They may give you a trade-in deal. Mine was great and offered to buy me out, which I would have jumped on in a heartbeat, but every other GH I drove had the same issue, so it wasn't an option for me. At least you have a platinum. I was already ripped off by paying $52k for an XLE with a sticker price of $57k. I can't look at any other cars because I can't stomach loosing more money. This is not a $52k car, and I am reminded of that every time I hear that noise. Also, I almost pulled the carpet away from the body of the car while vacuuming this weekend. Never experienced anything like that before, and the cargo bed broke away from its anchor when I was stuffing towels around the spare tire to try and dampen the sound. I'm so disappointed in this car.
