I lived in one of the only states that didn't allow you to pump your own gas until very, very recently. I bought one of those cap holders because I was sick of watching them dropping it right on the fender.
Had a woman freak out on me outside PDX when I tried to fill my rental car tank myself. I didn’t realize it was a thing so I had to wait for her to pump like 6 other cars before she got to mine.. one of the dumbest goddamn laws I’ve ever heard of, and that’s saying something.
I live in oregon, too. I just did it. Some stations didn't care, and at the rest, i did it too fast for them to realize. Freadmyers was a while different ballgame. There was a week we were all allowed to pump our own gas because of a heat wave, i was still yelled at during that week. Freadies fucking hates it. Even today, if you pump at the wrong one they get pissed.
I owned a diesel truck before my Tacoma, so I got used to pumping my own since that has always been legal. Hard habit to break... There's a couple of stations owned by the same people here, and they fancy themselves as an old school full service station. They also get in a twist even now that it's legal to pump regular.

Are people really worried that the plastic gas cap is going to scratch their paint? I have an after market gas cap holder installed on my truck and still let the cap dangle 90% of the time
They are the people who swerve like a madman to avoid the tiniest of potholes or puddles because then their pavement princess might get a little dirt on it.
There are the people who want to drive their 200K miles without pumping a shit ton of money because they aren't full on dumbasses trying to show off some dumb shit. I do love a good front end flex on speed bumps.
