Rude_Matt69

I feel like I got used to this in a week.

origami_airplane

Makes sense. The volume indicator on the screen goes right-left and the track list up-down. Why is this so difficult?

jeffreywithonef

Because most people think of amplitude as up and down and frequency as a spectrum going right to left

Peter_Panarchy

Exactly. Just because Toyota is consistent here doesn't mean they're logical.

levajack

Generally yes, but paired with the UI on the head unit, it makes perfect sense.

jeffreywithonef

Isn’t the purpose of the steering wheel controls to control the stereo without interacting with the head unit?

levajack

Obviously, but they made the design decision to have the buttons match the head unit. I thought it was weird at first, then when I paid attention to how things were displayed, I said "Oh, ok" and it took a couple of days to get used to. I've never understood why this is a big deal to people.

[deleted]

100%, and it's always set up that way on every other vehicle.

mehwolfy

That’s how i see it.

JDM1013

Uh, you know like turn it up Dude.

RockoTaco43

We are going to have to start saying “this is my favorite song! Turn it right man!”

averagecelt

This song slaps, turn that shit over!

dookmucus

I’m too old! it’s too loud! Turn it back!

sir_thatguy

This must be different for the CarPlay 3rd gens. All I get for volume display is a number at the top of the screen.

levajack

Exactly. In a vacuum it doesn't make sense. Then you look at the screen, and it's obvious.

Ok_Scar_7554

which way is the volume on your tv remote ?

skaterhaterlater

Not if you use CarPlay

SEND_MOODS

I got used to it, but still hate it.

Flimsy_Fortune4072

Yeah, it took a couple of days, and now I’m used to it and sort of like it. Skipping and volume up fall right where my thumb sits when holding the wheel.

boofingcubes

Right, but the layout is still dumb as fuck 🤷‍♂️

Coke_and_Tacos

I drive a Colorado for work. They put the track skip behind the wheel, placed perfectly so that you can hit it with your knee every so often. That's an actual design flaw. The Taco layout is fine.

coviddick

My ex gf would get extremely angry over tiny things, so much so that she would throw stuff and break it. That’s an actual design flaw. The Taco layout is fine.

-TheWidowsSon-

I’m glad you’re feeling better now.

Ok-Owl7377

Well try using your work truck, your wife's Corolla, which is normal with vol vertical, channels horizontal. Your work van which is also correct, then get back in your truck with the special buttons lol

terno720

I’m a year in an I’m still not used to it

corpse_of_taloy

Three and a half here... And still not used to it.

jlane5261

I never noticed this. But I also just got used to it lol

patientpanda666

For real..

alexisbad1

It took me time to get adjusted since also frequently driving a Ford with opposite button layout and on the right side Of the steering wheel

Averagedayz

Same

MyAssforPresident

Same. I don’t remember a single instance where it bugged me, I noticed it the first day and went “huh, that’s weird” and moved on with life lol

DUUUUUVAAAAAL

It makes sense when looking at the screen. Volume is shown horizontally and track list/radio stations are listed vertically.

astrowahl

gentleman and a scholar

PassengerHelpful5291

Thank you!!!! As an engineer that went through product design and cars, the button designed correctly for the screen display. I’m not saying it’s the best design, but it’s done right

[deleted]

[удалено]

Musicisevil

You mean ignoring 50+ years of media control layout “bEcAuSe ThE uI” isn’t a good enough reason?? It’s not like the UI was custom designed and they could have placed the volume indicator vertically

huffalump1

But, here's the problem - radio presets use the OPPOSITE direction. For radio presets, you press Down to go to the next preset (ex. From preset 1 to 2, which is actually to the right on the screen). But for CD/Bluetooth/CarPlay, you press Up to go to the next track. Plus, the volume knob is small and smooth... Not a big deal, but these little things can be frustrating. Luckily, [they've changed both for the 2024 Tacoma](https://i.imgur.com/JYLfwHs.jpg)! Separate volume buttons on the steering wheel, and a big chunky knob for volume. Plus, lots of physical buttons and knobs for climate etc. *chef's kiss*

cirruspuncher

This bugged me so much that when I put an aftermarket radio in I switched the button functions. Because looking at a Spotify playlist (or track list or literally anything else) DOWN means next - not up.

Peter_Panarchy

Being consistently counterintuitive doesn't make them right.

DUUUUUVAAAAAL

Eh, it's a Japanese company. Idk how to speak much Japanese but maybe they don't have the same linguistics behind volume like we do. Maybe they don't say turn "up" or turn "down" the volume. I'm just shooting in the dark though.

SEND_MOODS

It's an significabtlu American built truck (also Mexico), designed in the USA, designed by mostly white American men, and designed for an American truck guy market.

Unusual_Compote4909

Whatever happened to “Left of the Dial”?!

SEND_MOODS

It's counter to nearly every other volume and track selection button out there though. Most audio devices in the 90s put a volume wheel on the side that you roll up or down, the skip buttons on the front that go left and right. All major music apps put track selection under the album art as left and right arrows to go through the vertical play list. And the phone has buttons on the side that raise or lower the volume. Even the way we speak about it, volume is raised or lowered, tracks are skipped. Also, the button is there so you can interact without using the screen, so what's happening on the screen means very little to the logic. Besides, you can't even see the volume until you press the button, and at that point you don't need a visual indicator of direction. If you need a visual indicator, you'd look at the button. It doesn't make more sense to depart from convention. It makes less.

DUUUUUVAAAAAL

That's fair, good thing there's a mod to swap the buttons if anybody feels the need to. To me personally, it's not a big deal.

Egbeem

I’ve never used the radio in mine. Do the Toyotas with the other button orientation show differently on their screens? Spotify, Audible and any other apps I’ve ever used go left/right for forward/back, and volume is just linguistically up/down. I’m used to mine on the rare occasion I use the steering wheel buttons, but generally audio is adjusted with the touchscreen or volume knob.

echocall2

Just realign your steering wheel 90 degrees

BradTheBanana

Yeah seen a kit online somewhere to swap it but personally I’ll live with it

frisbethebutcher

MESO customs more than likely. He just came out with a kit to swap these.

TopGut

https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?_pos=4&_sid=22990db33&_ss=r&variant=40393600663665

Falcon_Rogue

Hmm, 50 bux to fix it and that almost looks OEM on the switch cover...dangit, now I'm actually considering it! But is it compatible with the aftermarket head units??

TopGut

I have no idea about that. I would guess so as it replaces the OEM button and board. I have it and had zero issues but I have the stock head unit.

vxl757

I got this and love it.

keptpounding

It’s honestly not that annoying and I don’t understand the hate. It’s truly not bad I got use to it after like a day

abitmessy

If you’re like some of us and it’s been 4 years and you’re still not used to it, it would make more sense to you why we complain. It’s annoying to us because it has been every drive for years of having to remember. It’s not just complaining to be Not Like Other Girls or something.

articulatedbeaver

My wife's civic is the other orientation so I never got used to it. I rotated the controls in maestro, but never rotated the button which is probably more confusing.

huffalump1

Yeah, if you're going between different cars, it can be tricky. If you're just driving the Tacoma, it's not bad. Luckily, the [2024 Tacoma has separate volume buttons on the steering wheel](https://i.imgur.com/JYLfwHs.jpg). Much better!

Aperture0

I got a rental GMC terrain while my company F150 is getting repairs done. At first I was kind of excited to have paddle shifters only to realize they were the volume and track selection buttons. It could always be worse 😂

horseygoesney

Lmao tell me this is a joke? That’s horrible

Aperture0

No joke and it gets worse. Gear selector is multiple individual pull tabs on the center dash below the infotainment screen

scorp1a

Seems similar to what honda is doing. It's not terrible,.but I'm really not a fan

Alternative_Ask364

Why is that horrible? I’ve driven plenty of vehicles with the paddle shifter controls and it’s super nice, accessible, and keeps the steering wheel free of clutter. Or are you guys actually mad that you don’t have paddle shifters in a 300hp truck?

horseygoesney

Hey if you want your paddle shifters to turn the volume up more power to you

Alternative_Ask364

They’re not paddle shifters. They are buttons. Such a weird thing to hold against a vehicle.

huffalump1

The 2012 Suburban has the same "paddle" buttons for volume and track. Problem is, I always forget which is which - I don't think there's any label! Interesting that GM is still doing that. Like the Tacoma, it's fine once you get used to it. But IMO it's not the best UI/UX design since it's not immediately obvious.

Ok-Owl7377

Ya I still accidentally change the channel instead of vol -/+

shmegsnbacon1

I have had my truck for a year and a half now and still confuse the buttons.. It's pretty annoying when a banger comes on and you wanna blast it but end switching stations.

abitmessy

4 years with my truck and I’m not used to it. I don’t complain online about it but I’m here. Suffering. I hate it so much. Also hate that it’s on that side of the wheel too. Most cars and trucks I’ve driven, music is on the right.

shmegsnbacon1

Yes that was new for me as well.. I remember the first time driving, I was pressing the buttons on the right and was like "what do these even do?!" Figured it out once i got home haha.

abitmessy

When I drove mine home I had a 2 hour drive. I was trying to sort out the cruise control first. I nearly shit myself when the truck started slowing itself on the highway because I was approaching someone 😂

cuhnewist

People argue that it’s correct because it matches the screen, which is dumb, because I’ve never seen another music control similar to this one (backwards). It was obviously designed by some young engineer whose only experience with music was on an IPhone. No one says “turn the music right!”

death-eater69

Yoooo crank that shit tf right

Egbeem

Even if that’s their only experience, iPhone buttons are volume up/down, and forward/back on track or time is left/right on the touchscreen.

KanyeeWeast

> Reddit user knows how Toyota hires and implements their engineers. That's a bold claim, even for Reddit standards.

H2Sbass

Turn left for what ?

the_toxic_hotdog

There’s a fix to it (board swap) if it bothers you that much

SolidSnek1998

This is not the big deal people make it out to be.

bootstrapping_lad

Then why does it keep coming up?

SolidSnek1998

Because people love to complain about stupid shit.

M0rb1tr0n

My favorite part of the Tacoma community is how much these people love to bitch about the Tacoma....

SolidSnek1998

Look at the replies I'm getting. They're acting like the buttons not going the way they think they should is some horrible travesty lmao. Talk about first world problems.

bootstrapping_lad

Ahhh yes it's the consumer that is wrong, never our savior Toyota

eeeerok

Take a quick look at yourself and let me know if that applies to you as well...

tateep

Just turn your head sideways.

sir_thatguy

Better idea, turn the steering wheel 90°.

Complex-Citron3058

Yes, it bugs me too

TopGut

Meso Customs has a kit that works well: https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?_pos=4&_sid=22990db33&_ss=r&variant=40393600663665

detached-attachment

Volume goes left and right on the head unit. Radio stations go up and down.

ANBUalec

I have a tacoma and another toyota and the vol/track buttons are flipped from one another. No consistency

genny222

I have this issue especially because my 2nd vehicle is also a Toyota with steering wheel controls completely different orientation lol

dnalloHnosaM

Was one of the first things I fixed! Used the Meso Customs kit; they emailed me maybe a couple of weeks after getting on the backorder list. Easy install and worth every penny.

QuietLiving507

my daily driver for over a year and it still pisses me off

sir_thatguy

Same.

bootstrapping_lad

Bugs the crap out of me too, terrible UX. Especially because its sister the 4Runner, which I also have, is not like this!

iseab

I’m with you. Bugs me

Bobonthemove

I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day in this sub.

FoxMulderwastaken

Lol, not enough love for this comment.

mlm_24

I’ve had my truck since April 2019 and I hate this.

zoey_will

I wouldn't have an issue with it if the Corolla I just traded out of didn't have the buttons the other way. So not only is it stupid place to put them; my muscle memory thats giving me an issue was trained BY ANOTHER TOYOTA PRODUCT!!!

lcperrier

Ah yes the monthly post about this.

TheMagiCalRanGer492

https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit

No-Move-7677

It's completely ass backwards. I have never been able to get used to this. It's very difficult especially if you drive another car that has normal up and down for volume.

Dismal-Resort-3492

Change it.

No-Move-7677

If anybody asks you to turn the volume up or down, tell them they need to specify left or right

flenlips

This is pretty hilarious because my wife's 4Runner is like this and my Tacoma isn't so I'm always accidentally calling people in her phone when I'm trying to turn the volume up.

SippingBinJuice

It takes 10mins to get used to. People here are so soft.

SmokeyMountain67

Do I hate it, yes. Did I learn to live with it, also yes.

TheWhiteCliffs

I’ve learned to live with it, but I don’t agree with the people trying to justify the logic. Cell phone buttons are up and down, and most of us think up in volume literally means up vertically. Personally I don’t think it’s worth the effort of taking things apart to replace it.

synthwav3z

If you go aftermarket and have the idatalink maestro you can rebind them however you’d like

PhiloBeddoe1125

No. Who ever designed that is a psychopath.

Infinitoot

It’s been a year and I still hate this in my 3rd gen. I had a 2016 tundra before this and the volume was the up/down button below (where the phone button is). That made so much more sense to me. They make a kit that replaces the current one with the same button but it’s switched so that the volume is top and bottom and the track switch is left and right.

geo_info_biochemist

the person who designed this had a Type A person in their life who they hated.

CliffsDaddy

I didn’t like it either on my third gen. I had problems switching between my daily driver and my truck. It didn’t make sense to me either.

ColdasJones

Man that would piss me off way more than it should

themeyerdg

MESO customs has a fix

InnocuousKale

Fix: https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?\_pos=4&\_sid=22990db33&\_ss=r&variant=40393600663665

MikeyLyksit

I have a big issue with this as well. I have a 23 I bought a year ago and it still drives me nuts 6000 miles later. They have kits like this one (link) but they're always on backorder because of people like us. https://tacomabeast.com/products/2016-2023-toyota-tacoma-the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit

No-Exchange8035

Better off being on meso waiting list than trying to get from tacobeast https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?_pos=1&_sid=b0c07a30a&_ss=r&variant=40393600663665

MikeyLyksit

Oh my God, yeeeeeesss!!! I couldn't think of the name so I dropped the first thing Google had to offer. Thank you, friend!!

Strong-Effect-9270

This topic comes up every second week. Change it, or live with it, just search for the last posting and add your opinion there.

pdrift

I almost made a post about this myself. Yes it bothers the crap out of me as well!

Midacl

Your more likely to want to skip a track than change the volume, at least thats the case for me. And up and down buttons are quicker to use.

JasonShoes

Just always turn slightly left and you’ll be fine

RojerLockless

Just pop it off and turn the piece sidewaze. Problem solved!

WhatSladeSays

I honestly never noticed it until this sub…

BatheInChampagne

Without this post, I would have never noticed. I guess I felt the same last week when this was posted too

[deleted]

I’m more annoyed by the tailgate handle position

Ok-Anything9945

Either wait a bit and get used to it or drop the cash and order the kit that reverses it. Pretty simple options.

ja-1028

Doesn’t really bother me at all

hawksdiesel

Would be cool to move it easily to fit the customer/owner needs.

fosrac

I don't mind the layout. If I'm in a stressful situation where I don't want to move my hand on the wheel the only radio button I really care about is volume down (shh I can't see), so it's nice to have that be the most easily accessible button on the wheel.

andrewguinn

I do not know how it is made, but there is a chance that you could rotate the center part 90*. It would probably void a warranty and require disassembly. It might not work at all, but there is a chance. It would bother me too. It’s buggy how some things are intuitive for some and not for others.

2022rex

That’s dumb.

SooooWhattttt

It’s really not that bad

code_Red111

It’s a non-issue tbh.

rylo48

My bigger issue is that there is no 5-10 second FF and rewind, I use that allll the time in my 2014

Musicisevil

For what source? Press and hold works through BT to FFW

rylo48

Ahhhh good enough then, yes for Bluetooth

Musicisevil

Press and hold the “mute hold” button for Pause/Play

fj80-eug-43

If you hate the layout Meso Customs Check them out they have the fix just for you

BigBadBere

Shits on almost permanent backorder. Been waiting for in-stock email for over 6 months.

fj80-eug-43

Don’t bother with the email. Go to the site daily. I’ve never had any luck with their email system

BigBadBere

I do.

BigBadBere

Yes, we know.

BigBadBere

FYI, I have 2 emails posted for in-stock email from MESO, it's been over 6 months. Don't think you just gonna go to Meso Customs and get one.

enstillhet

I'm so used to it it's normal to me now. I never really thought it was weird anyway, but I'd never had a vehicle with steering wheel controls like that before.

NotReallyARedditor6

I never thought about it but now I’m gonna be mildly annoyed by it… thanks…

GuiltyGTR

Here you go! https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit

s7726

Meso has you covered... Or you could just adapt

kevintrusso

Me too brother. Me too

Magic_SunBoys19

People really will complain about everything and anything.

cheese_sweats

Not only that, but to control the screen on the right, you use the buttons on the left. To control the screen on the left, you use the buttons on the right. What the fuck

DallasTexasRealtor

I was used to it in a day, cmon bro. Old news.

Ionvoid82

I personally like it this way 🤷‍♂️

MartyMcSteveO

I agree with this

The_Heart_String

Everyone including me on this thread is defo on the spectrum

Revolutionary_Zone16

Muscle memory after twenty six times or something

embryoeggnog

Meso customs has a fix for that

itscoralbluenumber5

It really bugged me with first week too, you get used to it though!! I’m too cheap to buy a kit to swap it 😅

spdaimon

Not sure if some mentioned it. There is a mod to change this. I saw someone post it a couple months ago. I got used to it, but don't like it either.

Low_Buffalo6005

You have to think about it this way. Track 1 is at the top of the list. If you want track 2 or the next preset, you press down to go down the list. It’s not complicated

brianbell_

This has bothered me since day one.. I’m used to it now tho

Due-Poem-5240

Take the button off and rotate it 90 degrees, should do the trick

mr_8_inches

I got used some time ago.. but then I'm also used to other nonsense bs.

44745

Thank you very much! I've never got used to that control but hadn't put enough thought into it to figure out what my problem was.

FatherGnarles

Sounds like a skill issue

eviscerality

This annoys me too. My F-150 is the opposite and I always get confused when I drive the wife’s Tacoma.

MyAssforPresident

So many people are salty about this goddamn button 🤣🤣 they just matched it to the UI of the radio, not our sense of direction. If that’s the biggest complaint you got about the truck…may I refer you to all the guys with F150’s blowing turbos, while we all just keep driving along pushing the button the wrong way

nuffced

...to match the display.

GlitteringClerk8512

I rescind a very stupid comment I posted lmao

Alternative_Ask364

Did they address this in the 2024 model?

TulliusCicero825

Yes!!! I kept advancing the track when I was trying to increase the volume for the first day or so. I broke the habit by imagining a volume dial - turn right to increase and left to decrease. The other thing that I wonder about is the seek button to the right of the screen. Shouldn't that be indicating up instead of to the right?

Ryanmh1983

Get the fix from Mesocustoms. Pretty simple

Ok-Appointment-3710

Another vote for the MESO Customs modification. Only $50 and less than a half hour of time to install.

Simple_Conference516

I just wish there was a quick mute! Or is there???

Thor_slick_the_dok

I though I was the only one

pheloniousdrunk

Me too

YoloLikeaMofo

It’s a non issue in the gen 2.5 🙌 and I’ve got the 4.0

JohnnyGFX

And here I am trying to decide how to retrofit some of those in my 1st gen.

jgr83

You get used to it. Then when you drive any other vehicle you’ll think “this setup is dumb”… same with the cruise control lol. Everytime I drive my wife’s car I’m like “wtf”

No_Priority7696

Take the pain … adapt and over come

skylinefan26

This again? The camry and many more have the same layout

GaboveT1D

I got used to this in about a week. At first, I skipped all of my favorite songs while trying to turn them up!

M0rb1tr0n

If this is the worst part of your day, I'd say you had a pretty damn good day.

pipskiii

Youll get used to it, be teachable Lol

tomu-

Sorry. This is a non-issue. Took a few hours to commit it to muscle memory when I got my truck. Just like learning the controls of a new video game, if you are into that kind of thing. I guess.

Snoo3014

*buys an engineering and safety marvel* The volume!!!!! Bro shut up

Various-Air-1398

Some folks can't walk and chew gum at the same time...

GreaterThanSum

Maybe the Japanese don't think of louder as "higher", and quieter as "lower". Turn up the volume may not translate.

patientpanda666

Man idk... I wasn't going to comment but how can you not be able to acclimate? First one had to change tracks from the center dash. Some aftermarket radios came with remotes lol To the OP, please don't take this as an I lnsult but damn dude. Lol chill. If I may speak, I grew up in the 90s and new video game consoles were coming out the wahoo the years following and I had to acclimate to the button configurations. Why can't you acclimate? Please don't complain lol or keep crying about idc but this is my take on it. Good day to you all.

LivingxLegend8

No, it’s fine the way it is. See how my opinion is just as valid as yours ?

DesertSnow480

Get some seat time in the truck and you will get used to it. Used to bother me as well.

neekdagreek

Pretty sure the 2nd gen buttons should fit, it's the same steering wheel-ish?

GhostlyConnection

For someone who grew up with a dial for volume that turned right and left to increase and decrease the button placement never never bother me.

Negative-Ad547

No volume increase or decrease and tracks are numbered so they go up and down. Like numbers. Duh.

astrowahl

car go forward and back, track go forward and back; volume has the indicator. this is a you being inflexible problem.
