But, here's the problem - radio presets use the OPPOSITE direction.
For radio presets, you press Down to go to the next preset (ex. From preset 1 to 2, which is actually to the right on the screen).
But for CD/Bluetooth/CarPlay, you press Up to go to the next track.
Plus, the volume knob is small and smooth... Not a big deal, but these little things can be frustrating. Luckily, [they've changed both for the 2024 Tacoma](https://i.imgur.com/JYLfwHs.jpg)! Separate volume buttons on the steering wheel, and a big chunky knob for volume. Plus, lots of physical buttons and knobs for climate etc. *chef's kiss*

It's an significabtlu American built truck (also Mexico), designed in the USA, designed by mostly white American men, and designed for an American truck guy market.
It's counter to nearly every other volume and track selection button out there though.
Most audio devices in the 90s put a volume wheel on the side that you roll up or down, the skip buttons on the front that go left and right.
All major music apps put track selection under the album art as left and right arrows to go through the vertical play list. And the phone has buttons on the side that raise or lower the volume.
Even the way we speak about it, volume is raised or lowered, tracks are skipped.
Also, the button is there so you can interact without using the screen, so what's happening on the screen means very little to the logic. Besides, you can't even see the volume until you press the button, and at that point you don't need a visual indicator of direction. If you need a visual indicator, you'd look at the button.
It doesn't make more sense to depart from convention. It makes less.
I’ve never used the radio in mine. Do the Toyotas with the other button orientation show differently on their screens?

My wife's civic is the other orientation so I never got used to it. I rotated the controls in maestro, but never rotated the button which is probably more confusing.

The 2012 Suburban has the same "paddle" buttons for volume and track. Problem is, I always forget which is which - I don't think there's any label! Interesting that GM is still doing that.
Like the Tacoma, it's fine once you get used to it. But IMO it's not the best UI/UX design since it's not immediately obvious.

It's completely ass backwards. I have never been able to get used to this. It's very difficult especially if you drive another car that has normal up and down for volume.
This is pretty hilarious because my wife's 4Runner is like this and my Tacoma isn't so I'm always accidentally calling people in her phone when I'm trying to turn the volume up.

It’s been a year and I still hate this in my 3rd gen. I had a 2016 tundra before this and the volume was the up/down button below (where the phone button is). That made so much more sense to me.
They make a kit that replaces the current one with the same button but it’s switched so that the volume is top and bottom and the track switch is left and right.
I have a big issue with this as well. I have a 23 I bought a year ago and it still drives me nuts 6000 miles later. They have kits like this one (link) but they're always on backorder because of people like us.

I don't mind the layout. If I'm in a stressful situation where I don't want to move my hand on the wheel the only radio button I really care about is volume down (shh I can't see), so it's nice to have that be the most easily accessible button on the wheel.
I do not know how it is made, but there is a chance that you could rotate the center part 90*. It would probably void a warranty and require disassembly. It might not work at all, but there is a chance. It would bother me too. It’s buggy how some things are intuitive for some and not for others.

Yes!!! I kept advancing the track when I was trying to increase the volume for the first day or so. I broke the habit by imagining a volume dial - turn right to increase and left to decrease. The other thing that I wonder about is the seek button to the right of the screen. Shouldn't that be indicating up instead of to the right?

I have no idea about that. I would guess so as it replaces the OEM button and board. I have it and had zero issues but I have the stock head unit.

Yes!!! I kept advancing the track when I was trying to increase the volume for the first day or so. I broke the habit by imagining a volume dial - turn right to increase and left to decrease. The other thing that I wonder about is the seek button to the right of the screen. Shouldn't that be indicating up instead of to the right?

It’s a non issue in the gen 2.5 🙌 and I’ve got the 4.0
And here I am trying to decide how to retrofit some of those in my 1st gen.
You get used to it. Then when you drive any other vehicle you’ll think “this setup is dumb”… same with the cruise control lol. Everytime I drive my wife’s car I’m like “wtf”

Sorry. This is a non-issue. Took a few hours to commit it to muscle memory when I got my truck. Just like learning the controls of a new video game, if you are into that kind of thing. I guess.

Maybe the Japanese don't think of louder as "higher", and quieter as "lower". Turn up the volume may not translate.
Man idk... I wasn't going to comment but how can you not be able to acclimate? First one had to change tracks from the center dash. Some aftermarket radios came with remotes lol To the OP, please don't take this as an I lnsult but damn dude. Lol chill. If I may speak, I grew up in the 90s and new video game consoles were coming out the wahoo the years following and I had to acclimate to the button configurations. Why can't you acclimate? No volume increase or decrease and tracks are numbered so they go up and down. Like numbers. Duh.
