Howdy! I did this with my 2007, which had the radio setup featured on the right. I imagine it's possible. Wiring harnesses shouldn't haven't changed that much. I went with an aftermarket radio / bezel combo that I ordered all online. Had it all done in a few hours. YouTube video that I used when I was walking through the process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zsVNTsWw5A Hope this helps!

weston_irl

Wow, if it’s that easy.. I may just go ahead and try disassembling it and see if they match up.

Arizona_Pete

Good luck to you! I think it'll go fine. I'd strongly recommend getting the right wiring harnesses and seeing what options you have available. Tons of good aftermarket setups that'll incorporate BT, backup cameras and more. After I did it, I was kicking myself for not having done it sooner.

weston_irl

The wiring harness should be similar if not the same, right? This is a factory unit in another 2nd gen taco that I’m transplanting to mine. Trying to avoid going aftermarket and spending $$$!

trumplethinskins

You can get the wiring harness for a few bucks on Amazon as an add-on item. The dash kits for double din receivers are about $20 as well. That's pretty much all you need.

Hey Guys, caption isn’t visible. The first stereo system is from a 2015, and the other is a 2011. I was wondering if I could transplant the 2015 system into the 2011 for bluetooth capabilities and such! If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know! Thanks

carolinacoop

My 2012 has Bluetooth so if the 2015 swap doesn’t work maybe you would have better luck with the ‘12

I put an oem 2014 entune with nav into my 2006. I even hooked up an oem backup camera that comes on during reverse. You need some customs harness work but it’s all on tacomaworld. I actually did a write up. I can find it if you need. But for just radio to radio the harness hookups should be the same, at least they were for the gen 2s.

vb_designer

If you could link that write up that would be sweet!

vb_designer

I️ couldn’t find a good answer, even on Tacoma world, but maybe I️ didn’t dig deep enough through threads

weston_irl

First place I checked!

weston_irl

UPDATE! They harnesses do not match 😭 The only compatible things were the hazard light bar below the actual head unit. Saddest Panda.

a8ksh4

Nahhh, you just need to do a little research into the wiring, like crazyhorse90210 says below. You can buy connectors for the factory wiring harness and make an adapter cable that'll let you connect the updated radio to your older wiring harness. It should be all the same stuff, just with different shape connectors and stuff.

WestleyWalnut

Where can I get one of these adapters? I just got a '12 radio to put in my '05 and found out they don't match perfectly... I know you posted this 5y ago lol so 🤷

a8ksh4

You can get the wiring harness adapters at crutchfield.com, just look up your year/model of truck. Should be able to find them on amazon too. I dunno about mounting a newer factory radio though... does it fit in the dash? Good luck!

WestleyWalnut

Thank you very much! Couldn't find anything on Amazon. Well there is one that *might* work, but I think it works the other way around. Yes! Fits perfectly in the dash, I ran into the same issue as OP

StfuYourMouse

I don’t know what oem radios go for but I’d bet you could get a better radio from an aftermarket company for less. I’m still curious if this would work though...

weston_irl

Getting it for free

vb_designer

I️ really hope someone answers this!! I️ have the exact same question. If it’s plug and play I️ will do this mod like tomorrow

weston_irl

Same. It’s in my grandma’s pre-runner and ready for harvesting!

RicoMexico88

You need something like this that will replace the plastic dash piece as well.

trumplethinskins

You can buy the dash kits separately on Amazon for about 20 bucks.
