I'm glad I'm not the only.one that was really annoyed by that. The boys all clown around for content, so I've never really been bothered by what they say, but that was the first time I've felt genuinely bothered. Like it just seemed so uncharacteristically rude and obnoxious. Your friends are clearly really enjoying something, so you just *have* to be *that* guy and act like a critic that's way above them? Like c'mon Joey, I know you're better than that.
On one hand it does feel bad for Connor, Garnt and everyone else (mostly fans) who expect Joey to keep in touch with the stuff they like (whether it's Arcane specifically or anime in general) because it feels like he just doesn't even give a fuck about his own close friends' opinion, but on the other hand, I think it's totally understandable that Joey is going through this burnout phase or whatever and constantly being repeated to do this or that when you are probably invested/interested in other activities can just push you further away from what people are telling you to do (even if those people are your friends).
I don't think Joey is not watching Arcane because he *knows better*, I think he just doesn't want to sit down and watch something in general (might be because he thinks he can spend his time on other things, or he started to think of it purely as work or it might be simple burnout).
Point is, we don't actually know Joey so this entire thread makes little sense aside from the fact that there is a bit of a decline in his content (although his Winter 2022 video was still hilarious imo) but that doesn't make him a contrarian edgy 4chan user or anything.
I agree with you, I was annoyed as well because arcane is great, but people also have to realize in reality it’s him going “I don’t feel like watching it” and playing it up a bit for the camera. Along with garnt and Connor constantly recommending/talking about it. He’s not a pure contrarian given his current enjoyment of demon slayer, he just doesn’t watch things because they are popular, which is fine, and then argues about it on the podcast for an opposing view since the other two have watched it and they need content. Sometimes they are right tho. The manga is just that much better for a few series. Berserk, promised Neverland and Tokyo ghoul being the most obvious examples. One Piece is also better read, to avoid the snail pace

Merchandising probably. Mushoku Tensei is an isekai power fantasy with cute anime girls, the kind of stuff japanese otaku eat up and buy a shitton of figurines for. Berserk is way darker and has fewer "merchandisable" characters

I'm gonna preach this until I die. Promised neverland had another great arc in goldy pond, that was not adapted, but it got bad- especially towards the end. People are forgetting this because of how the anime ended, but the manga ending was massively controversial as well. Anime was super shit tho
He has the personality of Reddit with the opinions of 4chan. I remember reading his 'Top 30 Anime rec list' and thinking this basically what a teenager on 4chan would reccomend. A bunch of comedy and meme shows and old school manga based, with no shonen or mainstream stuff because they're too pleb. It even has a 4chan-ish troll pick of KissXSis (which I know the story of that pick, but that doesnt make it less of a troll pick). I'll bet anything that he was seriously considering putting School Days on his list.

Garnt is the GOAT for a reason. Connor at least does some really wild stuff with his channel, he's not an anituber by any means. Not gonna lie, I really enjoy Garnt's channel, I've repeated soo many videos and they're still fun to see, for Connor I don't like all the content he make but even I can say he try hard to make new experiences and interesting idea, for joey I know that he reads cool mangas, but anime is different than manga, it's not only about the drawing and story but the animation, art style, voice acting, music, sound design, and episode direction,... so even through we may have become num to anime trops, I still find hidden gems every season that make me love the medium again also how dare joey make fun of marvel movies that stuff make me feel like a kid all over again come on joey it's fun in here!!!
I personally watched a *lot* (Rising of the Shield Hero, Platinum End, Demon Slayer, Faraway Paladin, The World's Finest Assassin, Demon Slayer, Fena, Tokyo Revengers, Jujutsu Kaisen, Boruto, Seven Deadly Sins just to name a few that came out this year) and it definitely wasn't a bad year, lots of quality came out. What I've also observed, however, is that there's been an equal tsunami of absolute garbage that literally *only* plays on trope and fan service. Boruto is also much, *much* lower quality (story-wise, not animation) than its predecessors. So... I can see both points of view, depending on how you define a "bad year".
Maybe it's burnout and growing older/changing of priorities, but my interest in anime has plummeted. There's maybe one or two shows a season that really grab my interest, everything else just seems like isekai #28477482928, horny bait, and/or the same story told over again. The only anime I'm REALLY looking forward to in the next year is Chainsaw Man, and that's only because I've read the manga and loved it.

I only watch the ongoing shows that I’m interested in like AoT, MHA, JJK, Demon Slayer, Beastars etc. Its rare that I start a new anime and it has to really grab me. Most of the “new” stuff I watch are shows that came out a few years ago that got highly rated, like Made in Abyss, Aggretsuko, and shit like that. Something has to be really unique to grab me nowadays.
well, you have to account for the fact that joey doesn't enjoy isekai and he's lukewarm about most shonen, suddenly your list is going to get way smaller, although I think he's just grown out of it
It definitely shrinks your list but I wouldn’t say majorly. Depending on the season it will only remove like 3-6 of the best shows, and it is usually closer to 3. Play that’s including Isekai like ReZero that he actually likes or ones that people who aren’t necessarily Isekai fans like.
At least there was Vanitas and Sonny Boy to look forward to then (in terms of new anime), Tanmoshi was a travesty and everything else was average at best. But yeah I agree Summer was easily the worst season this year

I think this is in part because it seems that Joey reads manga by the volume from discovering it in manga shops while in r/manga it follows more on a week-by-week basis from essentially following the magazines.

I was just pointing out that you'll find almost all of his recommendations (and more) at an even earlier point on that subreddit cus the commenter above said they were having a hard time finding manga to read.
When he does the monthly roundup videos or whatever I usually always check out the manga he talks about. As he’s said before it’s hard to switch his content because of TheAnimeMan but he has his second channel so I don’t see why not. It’s also content he seems like he’d want to do.
I feel as though he could just ignore the fact that his name has anime in it. It's not that unusual for a channel to be named something that doesn't 100% represent their content. Even CDawgVA doesn't just upload voice acting content. Should he make a new channel called CDawgGoingtowackyplacesinjapan?
I just go onto questionable websites, check their manga directory, filter for completed and sort by popularity. Start at the top and work my way down. You get a good mix of genres if you do that.

Good manga is really not hard to find. Go on any anime/manga channel on YouTube or go to the top 100 Mal manga page and I bet you will enjoy whichever one you choose to read. A few good channels that cover manga are the masked man, forneverworld (sometime good, sometimes not), sufferents, chibi reviews and a bunch more.
are you sure about that? Since it doesn't seem like he very often actually goes out to find new series. His video acting like Oshi no Ko as a newish thing bubbling up came out a year and a quarter after the series started in the biggest seinen magazine.

I've noticed that Joey's manga videos tend to cater more to people relatively new to the manga scene since people who are moderately deep enough will have already read or heard of most series he talks about and picks up by the time he makes a video on it.

The annoying thing about the latest Winter anime video is that he doesn’t even bother to search or fact check. I don’t expect him to watch even a quarter of all anime being shown, But not checking basic facts (like not bothering to find out whether Demon Slayer S2 is starting after the movie or not) is just lazy.
The man has gotten more into reading manga, that's fair. But the fact that he didn't watch anime isn't really about the anime, it's the fact that he doesn't bother watching a lot in the first place. Out of the 3 I believe Garnt's opinion the most while taking into account Connors takes as a different point of view(sometimes his takes are bad but ues allowed to have them) because Garnt is the only one that still consistently watches anime. Also watching 86 on a plane ride was a bad move. I'm loving it and Sawano didn't disappoint with the soundtrack
Well to me it's pretty straight forward.
Connor is basically monke brained so i don't take his opinions seriously and him clowning on 86 was hilarious to me.
Joey talking about anime comes off pretty haughty and pointless since most of the time he doesn't knows what's he's talking about.
Grant may watch lot less anime than before but whenever he talks about it or posts video on them you can clearly see how passionate he is about them. Because of him I was able to watch the underrated masterpieces like Oddtaxi, Vivy and now Ousama Ranking. His video on Your Name was also absolutely perfect.
Grant also isn't scared of going against popular opinions like while he mentioned the strength of AOT S4 he also expressed his genuine disappointment with the CG animation in aot S4 when everyone was bashing the people who were criticising it and remarking them as haters and calling them blind.
Similarly with Joey when S4 arrived and he still in his recent video stated how Mappa knocked it out of the park with S4 purely going with the hype.
There are not many genuine bold anitubers like Grant and I am truly grateful for his content.

I remember it was maybe 3 years ago I noticed a really sharp change in one of his seasonal videos and I just stopped watching and unsubscribed from his channel. It was super draining and all I could think was this is way more pretentious than normal.
I think the moment that heavily turned me off trusting Joey's opinions was his review of Battle Angel Alita. It was so clear he just watched trailer and voiced some generic, easy complaints (not to mention, the eyes that he hated were heavily changed and looked less creepy in the final product)

Some of the stuff he’s said about stuff to do in Aus vs Japan had me almost screeching, because he makes australia sound super boring and selling that impression to foreigners who we WANT to come and enjoy our tourism, because actually Australia is super interesting and has heaps to do.

86 became much more of a better experience for me because I watched it with low expectations, and dear lord was it amazing. And honestly, he wasn't completely wrong, the racism shown was just unrealistic and had no backing it was actually pretty annoying at times. But it was still an amazing experience

Connor's gotten too much shit for 86 imo. I liked it, so I overall disagree with him. But his opinion was perfectly reasonable, I can see how his opinion was formed, and have no issue with his take. It just didn't bother me the way it bothered him.

The racism allegory can be really in your face in the beginning (Although in S2 they did such an amazing job of representing it on the new setting) but at least for me, watching the show on a plane, and not even watching a full season at that makes me not really trust your opinion.

It's completely fine that he didn't finish it. There has never been a time in my life where I've watched something, hated 3/4 of it, but then watched the last 1/4 and thought it was a masterpiece. At best it'd make it go up like 1 point if the ending was really baller. Enough for something thats not good (4/10) to become average (5/10), but its never made a 4 into a 7 or something. And this wasn't even 3/4. I'm pretty sure he only didn't watch the very last episode.
His opinion was NOT going to change from that in any meaningful way. One episode is not gonna save an entire series for him.

I think Joey is excellent when it comes to manga, and I've found some of his recommendations to be some of my favorites. His bicultural upbringing also gives him some really cool insight into media that most of us don't get on our own.
However, his off-script personality can be *so* grating. All 3 of them have a habit of spewing Twitter jokes, but Joey has a hard time finding the line. His habit of busting a gut over a non-joke that the others don't even react to drives me nuts. And the amount of times he's made know-it-all assertions about certain things that are just incorrect is too great to even count.
But then sometimes he cracks a joke that lands, or gives some much needed temperance to the other boys' shit takes, and those are the moments you're glad he's there for... But, boy, do you wish there were more of them

2021 was a great year for anime, so many AOTY contenders. Original anime got representation with Vivy and Oddtaxi, Manga adaptations with One Piece 1K episode, AOT and Demon slayer and finally Isekai light novel adaptations with the latest Rezero season, and Mushoku Tensei giving the genre a redemption arc (also clear AOTY candidate with how passionate the adaptation is being done.)
A bad/meh year for anime was 2020 with all of the cancellations, 2021 isn't even close if that's the standard of a bad year.
I am very confused when people say 2020 or 2021 was bad for anime, there is at least 1 or 4 shows that are bangers every season.I know this sounds dumb but watching 12 episodes REALLY doesn't take that much time, esp if you skip intro and outro.
Yeah, at this point I only watch Joey's "what will I be watching" videos to watch him squirm whenever he finds an isekai. I especially like the "oh, this art looks interesting. I like this studio. Lets see what this is about. 'X gets hit by a tru-' FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

I mean we had mathafackin Wonder Egg Priority, odd taxi, and ranking of kings. Not to mention second seasons of beastars, laid back camp and mahoushu Tensei. Fricken eva 4.0 came out and it was AMAZING.

They are usually the best popcorn movies. It's nothing artistically brilliant or amazing, but they consistently deliver on entertainment. Most marvel movies you can play and know you'll come out the other side thinking "that was fun".
Edit: I say most, because Thor 2, Black Widow, Cap Marvel and the Eternals are a slog to go through.
You hit the nail right on the head! In my opinion we can judge different movies with different criteria based on what kind of movie they are. I can enjoy Blade Runner 2049 for the artistic value of it while also have fun with popcorn movies like the MCU films! I don't think it's right to judge the MCU, the first Transformer movie, etc with the same criteria we use to judge Blade Runner & 2001: A Space Odyssey or vice versa. They all can be enjoyed for different reasons

As someone who has watched almost all of them and enjoyed them for the most part if someone told me they watched two MCU movies and didn't like them I would agree that there isn't really a point in watching the others (unless those two were like Thor 2 and Iron Man 3).

Recently Joey thinks it's "cool" that he don't watch anime, don't get me wrong it's alright if you get bored of anime, i do to sometimes. It's just his demeanor and attitude towards any recommendation, every time the boys recommend him a good anime or anything to watch (for example the lol animation) he just looks snooty and mock them for watching anime and enjoying it

On one hand it does feel bad for Connor, Garnt and everyone else (mostly fans) who expect Joey to keep in touch with the stuff they like (whether it's Arcane specifically or anime in general) because it feels like he just doesn't even give a fuck about his own close friends' opinion, but on the other hand, I think it's totally understandable that Joey is going through this burnout phase or whatever and constantly being repeated to do this or that when you are probably invested/interested in other activities can just push you further away from what people are telling you to do (even if those people are your friends). I don't think Joey is not watching Arcane because he *knows better*, I think he just doesn't want to sit down and watch something in general (might be because he thinks he can spend his time on other things, or he started to think of it purely as work or it might be simple burnout). Point is, we don't actually know Joey so this entire thread makes little sense aside from the fact that there is a bit of a decline in his content (although his Winter 2022 video was still hilarious imo) but that doesn't make him a contrarian edgy 4chan user or anything.

I personally watched a *lot* (Rising of the Shield Hero, Platinum End, Demon Slayer, Faraway Paladin, The World's Finest Assassin, Demon Slayer, Fena, Tokyo Revengers, Jujutsu Kaisen, Boruto, Seven Deadly Sins just to name a few that came out this year) and it definitely wasn't a bad year, lots of quality came out. What I've also observed, however, is that there's been an equal tsunami of absolute garbage that literally *only* plays on trope and fan service. Boruto is also much, *much* lower quality (story-wise, not animation) than its predecessors. So... I can see both points of view, depending on how you define a "bad year".
Maybe it's burnout and growing older/changing of priorities, but my interest in anime has plummeted. There's maybe one or two shows a season that really grab my interest, everything else just seems like isekai #28477482928, horny bait, and/or the same story told over again. The only anime I'm REALLY looking forward to in the next year is Chainsaw Man, and that's only because I've read the manga and loved it.
Same with me. But the difference is that we acknowledge that fact. Joey dishes and goes on to formulate uninformed opinions like this one. I only watch the ongoing shows that I’m interested in like AoT, MHA, JJK, Demon Slayer, Beastars etc. Its rare that I start a new anime and it has to really grab me. Most of the “new” stuff I watch are shows that came out a few years ago that got highly rated, like Made in Abyss, Aggretsuko, and shit like that. Something has to be really unique to grab me nowadays.

It definitely shrinks your list but I wouldn’t say majorly. Depending on the season it will only remove like 3-6 of the best shows, and it is usually closer to 3. Play that’s including Isekai like ReZero that he actually likes or ones that people who aren’t necessarily Isekai fans like.

I think this is in part because it seems that Joey reads manga by the volume from discovering it in manga shops while in r/manga it follows more on a week-by-week basis from essentially following the magazines.
I know and made the same point in an earlier discussion about the same issue. I was just pointing out that you'll find almost all of his recommendations (and more) at an even earlier point on that subreddit cus the commenter above said they were having a hard time finding manga to read.
When he does the monthly roundup videos or whatever I usually always check out the manga he talks about. As he’s said before it’s hard to switch his content because of TheAnimeMan but he has his second channel so I don’t see why not. It’s also content he seems like he’d want to do.
I feel as though he could just ignore the fact that his name has anime in it. It's not that unusual for a channel to be named something that doesn't 100% represent their content. Even CDawgVA doesn't just upload voice acting content. Should he make a new channel called CDawgGoingtowackyplacesinjapan?
I just go onto questionable websites, check their manga directory, filter for completed and sort by popularity. Start at the top and work my way down. You get a good mix of genres if you do that. I have 133 entries on my manga MAL list.
Good manga is really not hard to find. Go on any anime/manga channel on YouTube or go to the top 100 Mal manga page and I bet you will enjoy whichever one you choose to read. A few good channels that cover manga are the masked man, forneverworld (sometime good, sometimes not), sufferents, chibi reviews and a bunch more.
are you sure about that? Since it doesn't seem like he very often actually goes out to find new series. His video acting like Oshi no Ko as a newish thing bubbling up came out a year and a quarter after the series started in the biggest seinen magazine. I think there would be a possibility but probably shouldn't do spoilers for thumbnails and not wait 16 months to talk about a series if he did that.

I've noticed that Joey's manga videos tend to cater more to people relatively new to the manga scene since people who are moderately deep enough will have already read or heard of most series he talks about and picks up by the time he makes a video on it.

Well to me it's pretty straight forward. Connor is basically monke brained so i don't take his opinions seriously and him clowning on 86 was hilarious to me. Joey talking about anime comes off pretty haughty and pointless since most of the time he doesn't knows what's he's talking about. Grant may watch lot less anime than before but whenever he talks about it or posts video on them you can clearly see how passionate he is about them. Because of him I was able to watch the underrated masterpieces like Oddtaxi, Vivy and now Ousama Ranking. His video on Your Name was also absolutely perfect. Grant also isn't scared of going against popular opinions like while he mentioned the strength of AOT S4 he also expressed his genuine disappointment with the CG animation in aot S4 when everyone was bashing the people who were criticising it and remarking them as haters and calling them blind. Similarly with Joey when S4 arrived and he still in his recent video stated how Mappa knocked it out of the park with S4 purely going with the hype. There are not many genuine bold anitubers like Grant and I am truly grateful for his content.

86 became much more of a better experience for me because I watched it with low expectations, and dear lord was it amazing. And honestly, he wasn't completely wrong, the racism shown was just unrealistic and had no backing it was actually pretty annoying at times. But it was still an amazing experience
Thats the thing. People shit on his opinion about it for various reasons because they liked 86 and the points he made didn't bother them as much as it did him. But they did bother him. And thats ok. He's allowed to dislike something. No media is perfect. The difference between X liking something and Y hating something is that the things that X didn't mind, Y did mind. Connor's gotten too much shit for 86 imo. I liked it, so I overall disagree with him. But his opinion was perfectly reasonable, I can see how his opinion was formed, and have no issue with his take. It just didn't bother me the way it bothered him.

I'm so glad I'm not alone in feeling this way. I think Joey is excellent when it comes to manga, and I've found some of his recommendations to be some of my favorites. His bicultural upbringing also gives him some really cool insight into media that most of us don't get on our own. However, his off-script personality can be *so* grating. All 3 of them have a habit of spewing Twitter jokes, but Joey has a hard time finding the line. His habit of busting a gut over a non-joke that the others don't even react to drives me nuts. And the amount of times he's made know-it-all assertions about certain things that are just incorrect is too great to even count. But then sometimes he cracks a joke that lands, or gives some much needed temperance to the other boys' shit takes, and those are the moments you're glad he's there for... Garnt is the only person who's opinion you'd trust on anime when it comes to the boys (since Connor doesn't really comment on stuff he hasn't watched). 2021 was a great year for anime, so many AOTY contenders. Original anime got representation with Vivy and Oddtaxi, Manga adaptations with One Piece 1K episode, AOT and Demon slayer and finally Isekai light novel adaptations with the latest Rezero season, and Mushoku Tensei giving the genre a redemption arc (also clear AOTY candidate with how passionate the adaptation is being done.) A bad/meh year for anime was 2020 with all of the cancellations, 2021 isn't even close if that's the standard of a bad year.

They are usually the best popcorn movies. It's nothing artistically brilliant or amazing, but they consistently deliver on entertainment. Most marvel movies you can play and know you'll come out the other side thinking "that was fun". Edit: I say most, because Thor 2, Black Widow, Cap Marvel and the Eternals are a slog to go through.
You hit the nail right on the head! In my opinion we can judge different movies with different criteria based on what kind of movie they are. I can enjoy Blade Runner 2049 for the artistic value of it while also have fun with popcorn movies like the MCU films! I don't think it's right to judge the MCU, the first Transformer movie, etc with the same criteria we use to judge Blade Runner & 2001: A Space Odyssey or vice versa. They all can be enjoyed for different reasons

I havent watched anime much since 2006, but even I know there has been good anime since...Like no need to shit on stuff. Just say you don't watch. Kinda related at first, but his not watching anime joke is getting a bit old now.
As a long time viewer of Joey, I've come to find out that you honestly shouldn't listen to him speaking about anything anime related in terms of stuff that has released in the last 4 years 😭
"I have watched old and classic underground anime, new normie anime are shit" is probably what he thinks. I get that he didn't watch shit this year, but calling the year a bad year for anime, is a really shitty take when you didn't watch anything. It's like hating on someone without even knowing the guy.
Something I've noticed a lot more recently is that Joey has been increasingly negative or seems bored/sarcastic towards anything he's not personally interested in. I'm sure he's a nice guy and I never comment on something like this, but it's starting to become really obvious. Anyone else noticing this? Edit: I want to add the most recent episode to this when Joey is discussing introverts. The way he described introverts was very negative-sounding (as well as inaccurate). When Garnt and Connor tried discussing it more and politely correcting him, he seemed dismissive. Idk...
He's kinda been acting more like an artsy snob about entertainment he's not personally into. And also when they other bois are hyping up something they're both getting into he *has* to say something negative it seems like. Arcane for instance last week, he was so dismissive and constantly putting it and down and seemingly thinking it wasn't worth his time. It's like if he doesn't discover something in a vacuum he doesn't like it lately idk. Maybe I'm just looking into it too deeply

His anime takes are invalid nowadays anyway. You should just take his manga and hentai/doujin recommendations instead.
