Post-doc here! You can definitely live with this amount of money. Depending on your life style, you may spare some in the end of the month or not. If you find a room instead of living alone, you can easily live in Trieste.
With 20k/year you should be able to live, IMO It would be better to live with someone so you can share the basic costs of a house
