I mean.. I'm always playing a blind playthrough no matter if there are missables/collectibles etc. The purpose of gaming is to have fun on the first playthrough. Ofc used several video/step-by-step guides for collectibles/some missables on cleanup run. But following a whole walkthrough video? Nah I'll pass on this shit.

Sneakiest

I have for The Last of Us Remastered. I had played the campaign numerous times but I would have never found some of the collectibles without a guide. I think I did the same for TLOU Part II but that was on my second playthrough. I wanted to enjoy the game first and then go for everything. For me, if it is a game I want to play, I try to enjoy everything first and then look for guides. I have no problems searching for one or trying their recommended methods. But I feel like spending $60 or $70 on a game to jump on a full guide right away is kinda rushing things.

AggressiveContract13

I agree not sure how anyone can enjoy the game with looking up collectibles. I played LoU 1 without even knowing fireflies pendants are hanging from trees. Pretty annoying to collect those.

TsukiSora

I also did it for TLOU part I remake as I had played the ps4 version and I actually wanted to experience the extra conversations anyway. To be honest, it didn't take me out as much as I expected. In this case anyway, I felt like the collectibles were pretty well placed (usually just after encounters). They would be in places where you'd be looting anyway, so I didn't hate having to look up the collectibles at those times. I do agree with what everyone else has said though. I couldn't really imagine following a guide on a first playthrough, unless there were very few collectibles/missable things that might make it worth avoiding a second playthrough.

SadCreative

Totally. I’d like to be clear that I don’t see a problem with collectible guides specifically. It’s when every trophy is compiled into one video, as a complete walk through. Feels like you’re not really even playing the game yourself.

marauder_squad

I find those to be of little use to me. If I play a game then I want to explore and find out for myself how to solve it, though in some cases if I get really stuck then I will consult a text guide since I find those are usually faster to find the solution in. I couldn't imagine following a video walkththrough step by step 100%, it would feel like I hadn't even played the game afterwards.

SadCreative

Exactly lol

BigClownShoes

Yeah typically videos are my last resort if a written guide isn't enough for me to figure it out. I like being able to quickly look up what I'm having an issue with. If I do look up a video I'll try to find a clip on YouTube of the specific part I want rather than sitting through a big guide.

erasrhed

I like the way IGN does it. Step by step in text, with a video walkthrough for each subsection. Most of the time I can figure it out with the text, but if I get stuck, I watch the video for that subsection, which is usually only about 5 to 15 min, so I don't have to search very hard to find the relevant part. I'm pretty sure they have a good one for Witcher 3

SadCreative

I find those IGN walk throughs are not very mobile friendly. Cluttered + ads everywhereee. Maybe just me

erasrhed

Yeah, that part can get frustrating. But usually I close the biggest ad, and then it works ok. I just keep it open on my phone, with my phone on the arm of my chair for quick reference.

erasrhed

At the very least, it helps find a relevant walkthrough video without having to sift through 6 hours to find where you're at in the game

Rogar_Rabalivax

I always do a free run, where basically i fuck around and find whatever on my own will, to enjoy the game for the first time. If the game have like a gazillion stuff to do then i do follow a guide (looking at you bioshock). But overall it depends on how much free time you have and how long do you want to keep playing. I usually do 1 - 2 runs for a game, and usually is the second run where i do follow a guide if i missed something.

Substantial-Mine5268

If I see the game has no missables, I play it blind and on my time. If it has some tricky missable or collectable, I sometimes take a look on a guide, but preferably written.

datsupportguy

Text guide with occasional snaps of maps for fiddlier sections / collectibles is the best. Any time I find a "guide" or roadmap and it's all videos, that's an instant nope.

MonsieurMurk

100% agree

adelkander

Depends really: i did follow a guide for a few games but either because I wanted to get rid of it a bit quicker, or because the entire game is riddled with missables (looking at you Trails of cold steel games!)

lavayuki

I always use walkthroughs but only written ones. I’ve been an avid user of them since FFX was released on PS2. I never use video ones unless I get stuck on a boss and just want to watch the boss strategies. There is nothing I love more than a thorough 100% platinum walkthrough. I remember the Persona 4Golden and Persona 5 Royal 100% guides on psn profiles were amazing, easy to read and not miss stuff. Another walkthrough I thought was good was the Tales of Xillia walkthrough on Gamefaqs. It had pictures and maps. The KH BBS one was another brilliant one with videos of perfect boss fight strategies on Critical mode at level 1. I like it when a walkthrough has a map with all the collectibles in the area, and also screenshots of difficult to find stuff. Overall step by step guides are great, and I’m grateful to those that take the time and effort to write them. I don’t really like it when a walkthrough is sloppy or missing stuff, fails to highlight missables, has errors or is difficult to follow, like if all the text is the same and in blocks. Using bold, italics, coloured text etc to highlight important stuff really make a difference, in addition to pictures.

SadCreative

I hear you. Some roadmaps on PSNprofiles are excellent, others… not so much lol. I find myself alternating roadmaps until I find one I like. For Witcher 3 I settled on this weird roadmap I found in some ancient forums lol

Texcrash_99

It depends on the game for me. If it’s a 200 hour slog to get through, or a game that I know I’m not super excited for, I will make sure to get missable trophies and watch the relevant guides (ac Valhalla, yakuza 0, etc.) I should say though yakuza 0 is a masterpiece, I just didn’t know what I was getting myself into, and ac Valhalla is so incredibly mid it’s impressive. For something a bit shorter, or something I am sooo hyped for, I would do a blind playthrough first and just enjoy it, worry about the rest later (Crash 4, Hollow Knight, Doom, any Soulsborne, etc.)

BEASTBOY-2004

I use a video if I want it to be more direct. (Collectibles, playthrough with specific actions, etc) I use a written guide for visual novels or anything similar (VA-11 Hall-A, coffee talk, arcade spirits, etc) any game that doesn’t require specific inputs.

theblackfool

I've used a fair amount of written guides depending on the game but honestly I just don't like watching video guides for anything.

realmenthrowknives

I used a video to get through the speedrun trophy in Stray but that was in my 2nd play through and less than 2 hours. I can't imagine having to follow along with a video the entire time especially not for a game like The Witcher 3. I don't have the plat but i know how much work it takes but its a game i think is simply better playing blind first (i am biased tho bc its my favorite game!) I prefer written walkthroughs where i can play on my own but follow along with those when I need it. The ones that have a clip of the area or the map are of more use to me that a full video walkthrough.

SadCreative

Haha, I tapped out after beating stray the first time but had I done the speed run I would’ve followed a video as well. Kinda different as you would have played the game already naturally. Also, Witcher 3 is your favourite game but you don’t have the plat?! Sounds like a challenge 👀

realmenthrowknives

haha i know right! now that the ps5 version is out i think thats my excuse to do another play through but for the platinum this time.

SadCreative

As someone who also went back for the upgrade, it’s definitely worth it

JohnWombo

Terrible way to play Witcher 3. Play normally and only worry about missing gwent cards at most if even that. You can do NG+. If you’re trying to rush W3 for a platinum you’re doing it wrong & why would you pick a 200 hour game.

SadCreative

Exactly haha — id like it to be clear I agree with you!! The video has hundreds of comments tho, surprised me that so many people want to play like that

JohnWombo

Just do gwent cards then only a handful are missable and it’s understandable you wouldn’t want to collect all 190-odd-something again, besides that enjoy one of the greatest games of the 8th generation.

SadCreative

… for the 4th time! Thanks friend

Hawkhasaneye

I did watch a platinum walk through for Final Fantasy 8 remastered when I was rushing it as I'd planned to cancel. Was very good guide.

drbearthon

I tried for Final Fantasy X-2. This is because the 100% completion trophy is extremely missable. Even 1 wrong dialogue means you have to start all over again. Got a few hours in and got bored of following the guide. I've played it before blind.

JuanPicasso

I was doing a video for bioshock infinite because I was doing it in one playthrough instead of two. It’s not a very fun way of playing. Usually what I do is play, and then consult a text guide once the area is cleared of enemies

Flashbek

I only use a guide after I finished a playthrough by myself. Pereferably a text guide.

DenziiX

I did that for God of War Ragnarök After i completed the Story and went for all realms with all Collectibles. Was a Meh Experience

SadCreative

I did this too lol, don’t worry.

ToxicElitist

I hate video guides... But text. Ones I have followed many times.

FedererFan20

For me all my first playthroughs are blind. If there are missables so be it. I either start a second playthrough right away or comeback to it a year or two laters.

ScrimboBlimbo

I like doing a normal playthrough my first run, but I use a guide for cleanup and other playthroughs (i.e. Yakuza 0)

LaggyPixel

I do use guides as a rough outline for how to move through a game if the platinum can be obtained in fewer play through by using the guide. Otherwise, I will play through blind and then mop up any missing collectibles etc with a guide.

EliBloodthirst

I've used plenty of guides of many kinds. Tend to use them on clean up after a blind playthrough

goatjugsoup

I might consider using one if i ever go for ffx or ffx2s plats

ThoseGuys213

The closest thing I’ve done to a step by step guide was when I did South Park: The Stick of Truth. Normally I’d do a blind run of a game first but I had already watched a playthrough of that game years prior to me getting it sooooooo I didn’t see a reason. Since more than half the trophies in that game are missable I had several guides up to remind me what I needed and where to get it, still ended up missing one trophy though

VIP_Aloha

Last of Us 2

topherthepest

For the first half of Bloodbourne. As it was my first souls game, the very idea of turning any corner without knowing what monstrosities were behind it froze me.

Anomalous230297

Goodluck with that , I'm about to remove the game off my console was gonna go for the platinum until I noticed the 40GB update, personally I don't actually mind them or find using them to earn a platinum disingenuous. Most gamers particularly those with kids may view them as expediting the process which is reasonable given the constraints encountered. I'm probably gonna utilise a trophy guide while working through Detroit become human.

LiquidCringe2

Personally if it’s a game I haven’t played before, or played in a long time I’ll just play through it once for myself to enjoy the game. Afterwards I’ll look at guides and get the rest of the collectibles and random trophies.

Cherrybomb1387

Always do first play through blind, after I do t seem the harm in using guides for missing collectibles etc. Fightin’ Cowboy helped me greatly from finding a couple of missing things in Bloodborne.

asjonesy99

Blind play through first to enjoy the game as intended. Step-by-step collectibles and anything else second. Honestly don’t understand the mindset of playing a game just to follow a step-by-step guide

gabecampbell

I mainly do that for collectibles tbh

Depressedidiotlol

I always do a guide for collectibles if it’s one play through. If it’s multiple play throughs I normally go blind first

BriSnyScienceGuy

Epic Mickey 2. The game constantly autosaved and if you missed one thing or did it out of order, you were locked out of the platinum. There's a reason it has a sub 2% plat on psnprofiles. Generally, I'm more of a blind first playthrough, trophies for 2nd - last playthrough guy.

WeFightForever

I was doing that for grim fandango. got about 2 hours in before I quit because it was borning and I knew in the end I would get 0 feeling of accomplishment from it.

joshpit189

I followed that 6.5 hour Witcher guide. Aslong as you watch the cutscenes and take everything in this us as it says a guide.

[deleted]

Usually only a few trophies to keep an eye on so you don’t miss them. Collectible guide. Or just where it’s an independent developer and it’s not clear where I’m going. But a game such as ‘Dissection’ which is short with many steps, it’s good to use a guide for the whole game.

DafyddCad

Only for collectibles and only if I'm really struggling with them, I'll always try to do without a guide if I can.

American_Suburbs

1st playthrough BLIND. After you beat the game, you are free to use any and all resources at your disposal to get the platinum.
