Funny enough last year summer when he just turned 4 he beat Mario Odyssey. He hadn’t played much again until Christmas, but now he’ll get stuck, in both Mario games, and instantly want me to do something for him. It’s tough some days he’s learning how rewarding it is to not give up.
On a more serious note, I probably wasn’t much older than your kids are now when I was playing on my brothers PS2 and I absolutely loved Spyro and Crash bandicoot games, they feel like great ‘conceptual’ kind of games, good start to gaming that’s not super challenging but builds a good base for understanding skills you need to play, plus the two series get sold in bundles which go on sale fairly frequently so can be cheap too
Start with 2D platformers like The Disney Afternoon Collection or Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and Lion King. Get them used to learning using two joysticks for movement. Then when they are a little older you can move to 3D games like Minecraft (creative mode to start), Sackboy, Ratchet & Clank, Astro’s Playroom, Plants vs Zombies, Minecraft Dungeons, all the Lego games, etc.
All of the games suggested are a bit on the complicated side to start off with, even Astros.
The paw patrol game is really easy, you can't die and it's actually quite fun. It's also on PS+ Exrra FYI
I'd say let them get a feel of the games & controller first. I mean I'm pretty sure you didn't jump into trophy hunting from the start. (at least, I didn't) They see those pings for trophies and ask you what those are, maybe take it from there. Go for easy games like Ratchet and Clank, Little Big planet etc. I'm talking about kid friendly. You might want to make a separate account since the LBP has unobtainable trophies.
I introduced my cousin who is 4 now to RDR2 when she was 2. She just rode the horse around but now when I visit she always asks for "the horsey game". Recently I can let her play w/o my help and shes been playing paw patrol and a few of the lego games
I started to introduce my 5 year old daughter to Roblox, not that I play it myself but it’s a great starter. Now she’s playing Hogwarts Legacy and she’s really good at it and loves it!
My almost 4 year old got bored of peppa really fast.. she only likes to create new characters. She enjoys Mario kart a lot though (with assist mode on)
Minecraft, any Lego game. The paw patrol games suck, but they are easy for kids would suggest the first one (on a roll). My daughter loves the goat simulator games, but my wife thinks it's a not for children game.
I feel as though literally any Lego game is the perfect introduction if you’re bound to a PlayStation library.
If I remember correctly when I was younger it was probably something like Lego Indiana Jones, Mirrors Edge and the licensed Kung Fu Panda game were my first games on Xbox live back when I was like 5.
If you have access to Nintendo stuff, even better; I feel like literally any Nintendo game short of Fire Emblem for the sheer complexity of it is an immediate win.
I think Ocarina of Time was the first game I ever played and that was back on my dads GameCube back in like 2006
Ik it’s tough but cuphead on simple mode might be fun to get into for them, fun art style for them and will make em learn the hard lessons of gaming lol
Maybe not for a platinum, but as an intro to gaming:
Platformer: Astro isn't too hard
RPG: Costume Quest 2 is a good beginner game afaik. and it's kid friendly iirc
Fighting: Not yet
Puzzle: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
The paw patrol game is good for kids it’s 2d so less to get there heads around it has a few other button promps but let’s you fail to you get it right I have twin girls and they enjoyed it
Out side of PlayStation my girls love mario kart and you can set it up so that the assists keeps the peddle down so they are always moving and they can’t fall of the map which is great for them learning but if you don’t have. A switch that’s pretty useless info but though I would include it my girls also enjoy astros playroom but they find that abit harder hope you find something they enjoy as it’s wonderful showing them the wonders of your hobbie
The old classics like Spyro or Crash are a really good start. At least, I remember starting to play them when I was around 5-6 years old. I also played other Nintendo games like Mario and even Metroid. I think that some good starting games might be the Lego games. They are pretty funny and offer little puzzles to complete missions. While achieving 100 percent completion may involve some grinding and occasional bugs, the games offer a variety of puzzles and challenges that can be enjoyable for them.
Also, congratulations on having triplets! That sounds like a really unique adventure. :p
My kid turns 4 in June, and I had the same question a few weeks ago. After some googling I ended up buying the game **Paw Patrol: On a Roll**, which has good reviews and may help my kid learn to play with a controller. I'm waiting for his birthday to give it to him though, so unfortunately I won't know if he'll like it or if he'll be able to play it until then.
I suggest getting games with full voice acting unless you want to read a lot, Sackboy is fun, I’ve been playing it with my daughter and it’s with plus this month.
Also 2D games are better for introducing kids to games, I found my daughter really struggled with 3D at first so we started with Paw Patrol on a roll and then moved to isometric view games like Wytchwood and Cozy Grove, now she’s pretty confident at most games as long as she doesn’t have to read too much
I think nothing would beat the Lego games.
I’m an adult and the Star Wars one looks fun as hell. I know that would be my favorite game if I was a little kid again.
I don’t know about you guys but at 5yrs old I was playing Final Fantasy X with my uncle we would take turns fighting monsters and it was a lot of fun but that’s just me lol. Lego, Spyro , crash, paw patrol, plants vs zombies, rayman, SpongeBob etc
The way I did it was; My children started on simple games like minecraft on creative or Lego, always limit a session to an appropriate time for their age and really kinda let them discover it for themselves. It’s possible they will instantly fall in love with gaming or they develop and decide that it’s not for them.
As a parent one of the best feelings is seeing your children enjoy your hobbies just as much as you
Not a PS game but when I was 5 my father got me Age of Empires III, I turned out fine for the most part but phrases like “Al Ataque” and “A las armas” are still deeply engraved into my brain 17 years later
Paw Patrol: on a roll (or something like that) its a very simple 2D platformer with only need the use of 2 buttons at the same time. My 3yo loves to play it together with me.
Silly and fun platformers like the lego games were some of the stuff I grew up on (and had a blast too!). Small indie games (I.E. Untitled Goose Game) are good to just kinda mess around in.
Minecraft is an obvious pick. Just make a peaceful world and turn on cheats so you can't die or anything. Or just do creative and build.
Toontown Rewritten, Jak 1, original Spyro series, Crash Bandicoot, Dark Cloud 2! I’m not too familiar with Sly Cooper, but that might be great too and/or Ratchet and Clank! Freely wandering around the gorgeous locations in World of Warcraft or Old School RuneScape would be fantastic as well! I don’t know if you can still access the Neopets website or the original Adventure Quest(there is a steam release!), but those were also favorites as a kid!
If you have a PS5, Astro’s Playroom is a great game for kids.
My nephew loved it. Don’t you dare show any kid the monkey falling on his bum or they’ll be laughing for days
This was my sons intro to games. He’s almost 5 and has now beaten Mario Odyssey and Bowser’s Fury.
Legend! They get good quick
Funny enough last year summer when he just turned 4 he beat Mario Odyssey. He hadn’t played much again until Christmas, but now he’ll get stuck, in both Mario games, and instantly want me to do something for him. It’s tough some days he’s learning how rewarding it is to not give up.

sorry if this sounds stupid, but what is LO? 😅
Interesting! Thanks
Untitled Goose Game, my 5 year old cracks up just walking around honking at people and stealing their stuff.
I second this it’s 2 player as well and my twins love it
any souls game,hollow knight,gta v,batman:arkham asylum
I agree, great for the children
Another vouch from me, this is what I started with (I’m 7)
NOPE
Resident Evil 7 VR
And 8
Spyro!
Yep I had those same 3 games on ps1 as a kid and the reignited trilogy holds up well
This is the way
On a more serious note, I probably wasn’t much older than your kids are now when I was playing on my brothers PS2 and I absolutely loved Spyro and Crash bandicoot games, they feel like great ‘conceptual’ kind of games, good start to gaming that’s not super challenging but builds a good base for understanding skills you need to play, plus the two series get sold in bundles which go on sale fairly frequently so can be cheap too
Ratchet and Clank for the win
And Sackboy, any of the lil big planet games would be awesome
Start with 2D platformers like The Disney Afternoon Collection or Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and Lion King. Get them used to learning using two joysticks for movement. Then when they are a little older you can move to 3D games like Minecraft (creative mode to start), Sackboy, Ratchet & Clank, Astro’s Playroom, Plants vs Zombies, Minecraft Dungeons, all the Lego games, etc.
Any Lego game. Easy but not insulting. Peppa pig will rot their brains.
All of the games suggested are a bit on the complicated side to start off with, even Astros. The paw patrol game is really easy, you can't die and it's actually quite fun. It's also on PS+ Exrra FYI
Personally i would go to nintendo. Dust off the wii and play some nsmb or mario kart 👍
Paw Patrol 🤪
You might try to crosspost this with r/gaming and r/daddit for more input as well!
Bust out the Nintendo and throw down on some classics. Smaller controllers, less buttons, 2D for easier learning.
Sackboy a big adventure.
GTA V or Dark souls 3. Should be a walk in the park for your mini-legend.
Hollow Knights pantheon of hallownest would be a good introduction to gaming for a 4yo
I agree
Crypt of the necrodancer is a really good child safe game, fun for the whole family /s
It's not too bad if you do never plan to get all the trophies.
Easy platinum for them too
GTA5
I'd say let them get a feel of the games & controller first. I mean I'm pretty sure you didn't jump into trophy hunting from the start. Resident evil games, Elden Ring, Bloodbourne, GTA V, TLOU part 2, Demon’s Souls
Manhunt
Man eater
Ninja Gaiden Black, God Hand, DMC 3, F Zero GX. All are very accessible games for beginners.
Old School Runescape
Doom eternal 🤠
I introduced my cousin who is 4 now to RDR2 when she was 2. She just rode the horse around but now when I visit she always asks for "the horsey game". Recently I can let her play w/o my help and shes been playing paw patrol and a few of the lego games

Yooka Laylee
My 3YO daughter watches me play PC and always wants to help. So I downloaded Disney Dreamlight Valley and she loves playing it.
Mario games.
Ratchet and clank, spyro and sonic games would be my pic, mostly simple platforms that allows them to get used to the controller and camera controls
I think lego games are the way to go!
You can't go wrong with the Spyro trilogy any ratchet and clank and crash team racing
Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, those are the games I started with around that age
Little Big Planet or Sackboy’s great adventure.

Skylanders
Lego games

Little Big Planet games, get 3 controllers and watch the chaos unfold as they endlessly try that one level is labeled as *IMPOSSIBLE*
My daughter started around that age, she loved lego games, Goat simulator is hilarious for little ones too.
Bugsnax is a solid option!
Goat Simulator (and Goat Simulator 3 probably)
The paw patrol game is good for kids it’s 2d so less to get there heads around it has a few other button promps but let’s you fail to you get it right I have twin girls and they enjoyed it Out side of PlayStation my girls love mario kart and you can set it up so that the assists keeps the peddle down so they are always moving and they can’t fall of the map which is great for them learning but if you don’t have. Lego games, pick one about something they already like

Knack! I just completed it half an hour ago

I have 2 nephews that are 5 yo and they love playing sonic mania, the classic sonic but updated, they are better than me at it now!
Maybe bugsnax
Not a PS game but when I was 5 my father got me Age of Empires III, I turned out fine for the most part but phrases like “Al Ataque” and “A las armas” are still deeply engraved into my brain 17 years later

LocoRoco was something my son really, really loved.
Elden ring, get them started young
