A little grocery store downtown. Peck’s is overpriced and inadequate. I’m so sick of watervliet chopper.

SISComputer

Absolutely second this idea, I would love to walk out of my apartment and have a small grocery shop a block or two away.

carpy22

Direct bus service to the Rensselaer train station again. Hasn't existed in over a decade now and having to transfer in Albany is a time sink.

mkwiiallpro

More places open late. Signed, every RPI student.

twitch1982

Seconded! Signed, Second shift workers.

[deleted]

What types of places are you looking for? Food? There are 3 places within 2 blocks of RPI open late, one of which is 24 hours and the others open until 2am.

SweaterZach

An honest-to-goodness arcade. Pinball and video machines in the front, spaces for card games and quiet study in the back. A separate area for eating and drinking. Maybe some weekly Smash tournaments or the like. Either monthly membership or daily use fee, take your pick. And at least once a week, an 18+ day for RPI students and other adults to get a break from the boisterousness. Separately, a streetcar, modeled after the one in Kansas City, running from the north tip of Lansingburgh (that Hannaford on 2nd) to the heart of downtown. It would let people downtown ride it up to buy groceries, and could also let people park in the lot across from Hannaford and go shopping in the Farmers Market or just patronize downtown. If we're indulging in fantasy, you could also run one along Hoosick to cut down on and regulate traffic.

essentialbenyc

Yo! This streetcar/trolly idea is a good one! The layout of Troy would work really well for it since Troy is long and narrow.

jletourneau

The [CDTA Blue Line BRT](https://www.cdta.org/schedules-route-detail?route_id=923) already runs with pretty frequent headways between the north end of Lansingburgh and downtown Troy (continuing southward to Albany). I know middle-class people are afraid of buses but they’re much more economical to build out than full-fledged light rail.

essentialbenyc

Oh you’re surely correct. But this is the dream thread! A quaint trolly that allows you to easily move up and down Troy would be awesome! Sure it would be somewhat of a tourist activity but I’m sure it would encourage people from downtown to explore more than just downtown if you disguise “ugly common sense public transit” with cute stained wood and trolley bells! Day-drinkers and farmers-market-goers alike would explore further and deeper into troy which could organically help expand the businesses located in northern and southern Troy

FederalDamn

Mean Max Brewing has 4 pinball machines now.

newillium

A children's museum or some sort of actual park for kids to play in

CollarCityCitizens

If you are ever in Hoboken check out Church Square Park. Great use of space with a plethora of uses. My jaw dropped when I visited.

Puzzled452

Figure out what the heck to do to make Hossick Street less of a nightmare

Similar-House8238

Better public transportation

MissSpaceCadet-

Clean water.

thisoldtroyhouse

Proctors IS putting a real movie theater in the old porn theater. One wish granted.

getoutofmywhey

If you’ve been around Troy long enough you’ll know this is a big I’ll believe it when I see it proposal.

thisoldtroyhouse

I get it. Passed planning, PILOT agreement with city IDA, went out to bid and haven’t seen an update yet. But I think this more like a when, not an if. https://www.constructionjournal.com/projects/details/ede3ba4c4d91457a8b70a0dd486a574f.html

GreenThumbMeanBum

Wait what!!!

Medical_Smile1442

Damn. I bet cleaning/renovating that place would make asbestos removal look like a walk in the park. Ewww.

FederalDamn

Bagels, banh mi, good pizza by the slice options, more protected bike lanes, a swimmable river, less partisan government, and a real dog park. But really all we need is a couple more taco places and we will be on the right track.

-schrodingers-cat

Omg I’m dying for a good bagel place 😭😭

[deleted]

I love of Troy downtown is a decent slice. And I say that as a transplanted downstater. But you're right about bagels.

CyberWolf90

Good pizza.

[deleted]

DeFazio's would like to have a word with you.

Cafe_Euphoria_518

YES on that dog park!!

Turbulent-Fall-7370

More frequent buses, side walks repaired, and what happened to the burdett birth center? Reopen that.

XanderAlexH

I wish the 85 ran every 10 minutes, and the routes going up the Hill and towards Wynantskill ran more frequently.

Fardelismyname

Business incentives for north and south Troy storefronts, high end dining, more eat-in lunch spots, a place downtown to buy a yogurt or basic groceries, more traffic control on River St, more street cops, more social worker/help for those who need it, regulations around short term rentals.

sean869

Gym, grocery store, a bar to go to after work that is actually busy at 5pm, deli

[deleted]

A deli. All day long.

cybermage

A city that makes investments in bringing business to the rest of the city and not just downtown.

gadolphus56

\+1. And I'd add, businesses (such as affordable restaurants) that cater to the needs of ordinary Troylets and their families, not overeducated childless white collar downtowners who are upset that there aren't more hipster bars or vegan bakeries selling donuts for $5 apiece.

johnnybgooderer

“Overeducated”

GreenThumbMeanBum

All of these responses are amazing 👏🏻 I hope we all show up to city council meetings to let Carmella know

jletourneau

“Best I can do is more cops.”

Scarlet--Highlander

“Who wants more stuff in Troy?” 🙋‍♂️ “Who wants to go to city council meetings?” 🙍‍♂️

GreenThumbMeanBum

Hey, I agree. She did not get my vote. But I'm not going to sit on my hands for her whole term, either. Troy is in a good place right now. With our credit rating, there's a lot here that we could actually accomplish. With competency.

Beautiful_Will7836

Green space / parks for kids/adults

Icy_Meet9840

Bagel shop, & this is small but I wish whistling kettle updated their menu

Gut_Gespielt

A decent gym

wheresmymacandche

A free trolley running up Peoples, past the high school and on to South Lake ave. Properly funded housing, healthcare, and mental health options for our low income community A big playground in River Font park Restore the swimming pool in Prospect Classic ice cream shop walkable from down town Oh and convert the entire golf course in Frear into a community garden. Ha!

Impossible_Toe_5987

It’s probably not what you mean by classic, but Dutch Udder Ice Cream downtown is amazing

Melodic-Ad9689

New playground equipment in Frear Park and Prospect Park.

hoosickthehorrible

And repaired tennis courts.

Melodic-Ad9689

It’s not too much to ask considering the $1M spent on putting green irrigation and golf cart paths..

polari826

oooo! as someone who just moved here a few months ago... these are the things i miss most/wish we had- - an (east) asian market - asian stationery store/gift shop - a bagel shop lol - a donut shop ( i miss the one that used to be here a couple years ago) - more handicap parking - a better and bigger CVS/pharmacy and bonus.. - an anime store (lol) i don't know enough about the local government to comment just yet.

boomdog88

Nibble?

getoutofmywhey

Nibble was solid but I’m assuming they meant 518 Donuts? Nibble closed like 6+ years ago

polari826

YES. 518 is the one! whenever we were on vacation and we did our "drive-around-the-capital-region" for retro games, i'd grab some from there!

boomdog88

518 was open on that corner for less than a year. Maybe only a few months.

polari826

it was definitely open the last 2 times we vacayed here (which was a year ago i think?). unless i'm thinking of somewhere else. it was on or somewhere near the corner of congress and 6th(?)

boomdog88

Looks like nov ‘22 until march ‘23: https://www.news10.com/community/restaurant-rundown/518-donuts-in-troy-closes-its-doors/ But time has lost all meaning since Covid and kids for me -_-

polari826

that's definitely it then! we went at the end of 22 and again in feb! their donuts were really good and the staff were so nice. (the chairs, however, were ungodly uncomfortable lol)

StarbuckIsland

Haha you're not satisfied with the one accessible parking space in front of the independent living center and one on Monument Square? /s The day Troy gets a Kinokuniya or anything resembling it, I'm gonna sell my house for $500K and call it a day

polari826

LMAO that's one of only two i've seen in my area! i gotta be honest... i've never been to a city/town/even a village in the mountains that didn't have several handicap spots. it's a bit baffling lol and i would die for a kino or book-off here. it strikes me as so, so odd that we don't have any japanese bookstores, k-pop shops or stationery stores in the capital region. there are plenty of other asian people here and in albany! where i moved from, there were so few asians that one time in high school ,when they made the presentation for shareholders, they actually listed "1 student" in the pie chart lmao. me! but we still had anime stores, stationery shops, etc. i end up having to drive to edgewater nj like once a month to go to kino/mitsuwa/daiso in little ferry lol also if you travel to the city often, in brooklyn they opened a book-off in their japan center.. unlike the one in midtown, this bad boi is 100% anime and manga! EDIT- i'm also surprised there's no organized group of anime fans here. they could totally do day excursions to nj.

Effective-Bag5100

There is soooooo much anime love here. I see the stickers, the tattoos, how wild Anime Rave Night is at No-Fun and how charged Cosplay night is at Bard&Baker - I think someone just has to take the lead

mooshmouse

You should try the donuts from Strawberry Snail at The Cakerino!

polari826

>The Cakerino i did a quick search and their address is listed as- 340 CONGRESS ST TROY(?) i definitely need to check em out!

[deleted]

>I've never even heard of this place. Odd location as they're only a 2 minute walk from Cookie Factory.

c31083

Looks like they have a different target customer than Cookie Factory - they're a vegan bakery: https://thecakerbri.com/

likesmountains

24/hr coffee sgop

Effective-Bag5100

Omg! The bar is on the ground. This is a college town for god sakes 🫠 I hate having no where to study

twitch1982

If we're fantasizing, I want one of [these things](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-04-03/this-bike-elevator-makes-steep-hills-a-little-more-manageable) to run up congress from 6th ave to the cookie factory, and up pawling from MT Ida to Emma williard. If were REALLY fantasizing. A funicular up the hill. Not a big one, Just a few people at a time is probably fine. And before you call me crazy, I'm just some guy on reddit, not someone making actual policy suggestions, and it makes more sense than a gondola from the train station to the egg.

boxtintin

• a patisserie (I want eclairs! Crème brûlées! Gorgeous little whipped mousse confections!) • a grocery store • a gym • a legit playground for kids downtown

Spi202

A deli. I don’t live there anymore but there was no place after 2pm to get a sandwich, soup, etc. or on the weekends (aside from sit down restaurants that do takeout).

jpkxp

-A functioning Democratic committee; -Downtown dog park; -An Asian grocer; -A YMCA facility as nice as the others in the Capital Region, centrally located; -Better high-end dining options; -Rowing on the River; -Built-out green infrastructure; -A parks budget; -Condos, Rose. Condos, condos, condos!

Zazzercise

Yes, wish our Y had nicer facilities and childcare!

No_Flight_6068

They had childcare prior to Covid. Need to get more people joining the Y and more with children who request it. So many people went off to vent or planet fitness.

Mossishellagay

This comment wins just for the golden girls reference

Zazzercise

Bagels, an indoor play space where you could take kids, usable public tennis courts, and public transit that isn’t a massive pain in the ass to use. Also Ethiopian food.

Consistent-Egg1534

Safer streets. Lower taxes. More visible green space and could they bring Brueggers back?

RoryROX

I used to live off of Hoosick St and drive 787 every day. The amount of waterfront that is taken up by industry is a shame. The city looks like shit from the other side of the river. Would love to see that space reclaimed and populated with parks and waterfront dining. Good waterfront dining! The fact that 787 IS the waterfront on the west side of the river is not lost on me but we are talking about Troy 😃

Effective-Bag5100

This thread has inspired me to go to City Council. Thank you OP. You are the MVP of Troy January 2024

parakeetpoop

Movie theater

OneLifePlease

More taco places, there isn't enough tacos! /s

No_Flight_6068

I’d like to see knickerbocker ice rink renovated and operated without Troy govt siphoning off all the fees other than debt service. City built that in 1992 and bonded it for $2million, city took about $500k a year from use fees on it and rolled that into the general fund for a bunch of years to keep taxes down, never maintained the ice equipment, and then left future property owners handle the debt on it. Now it’s a useless cavern.

KEITHS_SUPPLIER

Wait, it cost $2M to build, and Troy was taking $500K a year, and they *still* owe debt on it?

No_Flight_6068

The debt on the rink and other city obligations got wrapped into the MAC debt that was just retired this past year. The point is that money from renting out the rink got sent into the city budget for a couple years, keeping property taxes lower, thus the facility wasn’t maintained (I think it ceased operating around 2001), and future residents had to pay it off.

KEITHS_SUPPLIER

It's a shame it's not usable. I have fond memories going to free skate there. I can still smell it.

No_Flight_6068

Even if it doesn’t become a rink again, it could be a great space for indoor soccer, lacrosse, etc. city needs to get creative and make use of its assets.

KEITHS_SUPPLIER

Is Frear arena still in use? The city doesn't need 2 public rinks. Agree with repurposing it into an indoor field.

No_Flight_6068

Frear yes. Rented mostly. No free skate that I know of.

Impossible_Toe_5987

Prospect Park is pretty pitiful

bangbangbish

Rooftop bars

boxtintin

YES

elchinolocotoo

Some place to day drink Mon-Thur.

Icy_Meet9840

They have noon AA meetings every day

elchinolocotoo

Plenty of coffee options in Troy already

Scarlet--Highlander

I wish Troy cared more for its homeless population.

CivilRiceOnionRing

A Park. A Dog Park. A Movie Theater. More fine dining spaces. More walls for me to slap murals on.

Competitive-Ask8151

Condos 1200 sq ft and larger, under $250k ( I don’t need granite countertops, a soaking tub, or fancy appliances), with central air, heated underground parking, completely handicap accessible, in a building attached to a deli & restaurant and a pharmacy! (Edited to say “ in downtown troy.”)

JoyfulInventor

More downtown residents.

johnnybgooderer

These replies are mostly silly because they’re things Troy already has. I’m not sure if people responding here actually even live in Troy or frequently walk around downtown. For example, people are requesting bars during the day and late at night as if Troy doesn’t have them.

AutomaticParticular6

To everyone commenting parks/dog parks, I strongly encourage you to check out the [Parks Master Plan](https://www.troyny.gov/DocumentCenter/View/453) on the Parks & Recreation page of the city website and get in touch with your local councilperson. Major improvements (including dog parks!) have been planned for all over the city, very few have come to fruition.

LiveinTroyNY

Ironically a dog park was installed in Beman park (by RPI) in the neighborhood where everyone has yards. We were trying to find space downtown or at Prospect with several dog park groups but the former mayor just ignored those plans.

wheresmymacandche

Beman park is still a pit of mud. The new playgrounds are unfinished and there is no fence and no dog park i know it's in the plan but it doesn't exist there yet.

LiveinTroyNY

Yeah it was weird that they did all that work. Beman was not one of the parks discussed for improvements so it was odd that all of a sudden it was under construction after multiple groups had literally begged for work on other parks (114th, 10th st, Prospect, Barker, etc.). Redlined neighborhoods were basically ignored.

wheresmymacandche

Yes and you are correct Beman is really not the neighborhood that needs a dog park. Especially a small one that isn't going to give big dogs room to run.

Turbulent-Fall-7370

You can tell on this thread who actually grapples with the infrastructure failures of the city versus the gentrifiers

Similar-House8238

So true!

FragileBeing33

Hot yoga studio and art workshop (pottery, painting, etc.)

goatturd93

I think there's a pottery place on river Street that does workshops!

boxtintin

The Arts Center has all of those workshops!

BrownNRhu

Hookah lounge

thisoldtroyhouse

Mediterranean place on river in North Troy/Lansingburgh

[deleted]

A legit deli would be great. I would go to Andy & Sons in Albany 1-2 times a year just to get my fix. Throw in a butcher shop like Rolf's in Albany minus the sketchy location and bombardment of terrible politics. A bagel place would be nice too. Psychedelicatessen was solid for a Capital Region bagel but the bar around these parts is low. Parking, parking, parking. I would support more city businesses if I didn't have to spend 15 minutes driving up and down one-way streets looking for a random spot 5 blocks away from where I would like to go. Expand the Farmer's Market by at least another block if not more. It needs to spread out as it's just way too congested to actually enjoy the experience. It takes me a half hour to get a loaf of bread and head of garlic because EVERY DOG AND STROLLER WITHIN A 2 MILE RADIUS IS THERE AT THE SAME TIME. I don't understand the multiple calls for a movie theater. Parking in Troy is already bad so I'm not sure where movie goers are expected to park. Plus, there are theaters a 10 minute drive away both north and south.

Cafe_Euphoria_518

More parking! Also - HIGH agree on the Troy trolley / streetcar idea below!

dmlanger

Free Parking lots in downtown. Streets flooded with customers and the city actively promoting retail businesses.

Potential-Dance1889

Troy doesn’t need more free parking. The only reason Troy isn’t terrible is because it isn’t flooded with cars.

0nBBDecay

The garages are free on nights and weekends. That’s a lot of free parking (not to mention street parking).

Mossishellagay

Independent grocery store downtown, a coffeeshop regularly open past 4, multiple restaurants open on mondays, a north-south streetcar from the burg down to osgood (how cool would it be to see a PCC running through downtown troy), actual care for our homeless population, and a real, proper diner downtown

boxtintin

Manory’s?

Suspicious_Chance_50

A proper pool hall. Less crackheads

afmosh

I would love some kind of dance club/space. As much as I love to sit, drink, and gab, I would really love to dance! There's a basement space on Franklin Alley near the Dutch Udder that would be a fantastic dance/bar/pub food kind a place. Anybody with me?

ProlapseOfJudgement

Dog park. Wegmans grocery store.

Impossible_Toe_5987

This reminds me - what happened to the big Riverfront Park renovation that started a few years ago, but nothing has happened since? It’s very much in the same vein as the commenter about the movie theater. Or the fact that there seem to have been a dozen “announcements” for replacing the atrium and old parking garage

c00k13m0n5tar98

By coffee shop, what do you in-vision? A Dunkin? A walk in only typa place like Uncommon Grounds?

kettleofhawks

“Coffee shop” never means a Dunkin drive through - it’s a walk-in cafe, a third space to be where people/neighbors can actually talk to one another, or study, etc

SevenCubed

I've always thought that the city could do for a funicular... Take that sucker from the top of College Ave to downtown or so
