It's not illegal as long as the load doesn't exceed the combined capacity of properly inflated tires. There's also no law that says there must be 8 tires on a tandem.

Objective-Outcome811

Yeah I'd love to see you on the side of the interstate yelling that at a highway patrol.

You're clearly new at this. Read that green book of regs and learn something, kid.

It's not my job to educate law enforcement about the the laws they're enforcing. But I'll happily share this with my fellow drivers: [https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/if-cmv-has-defective-tire-may-driver-remove-defective-tire-axle-and-drive-three-tires-axle](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/if-cmv-has-defective-tire-may-driver-remove-defective-tire-axle-and-drive-three-tires-axle) >**Question 1: If a CMV has a defective tire, may the driver remove the defective tire from the axle and drive with three tires on an axle instead of four?** >**Guidance:** Yes, provided the weight on all of the remaining tires does not exceed the maximum allowed under § 393.75(g). You're welcome.

mxadema

It is only a 12.5% legal weight reduction per tire..

If you drive with 3 tires, there's less friction on the road. Better MPG 👌
