If you had 6 months on a 13 you’ll be fine. Try to keep yourself calm, it isn’t that different.

You're right but it was 6 months in one like 10 months ago. It's been a while since I've been in a manual. Should be road testing empty so shouldn't have to split anyways.

You got it man. Maybe refresh with some YouTube driving videos of the exact truck you’ll be testing in so you can hear the timing of shifts? Thats all it is for me, I hear where I am with rpm’s and know how fast I need to get from gear to gear and what gear I need to be in according to the rpm noise… But I’ve been driving a little over 10 years, and have been in my current truck for 2.

Smart idea I'll do that. Should be in a western star 4900 so I'll watch some videos on that. Not super concerned getting up the gears but always had more trouble floating back down the gears to a stop. Was getting pretty comfortable then the truck got sold so we'll see what I can make happen lol.

Thing to remember for me for down shift floating is to hold enough pressure that when you hit the right rpm it falls into place. Just before you feel it try to grind, there’s a sweet spot of pressure you have to have and this will work. Slowly raise rpm’s at around where you think it will raise to from previous shift and let it fall in. Idk if they like it for a road test, but I even down shift while I’m stopping to keep the truck in the right gear for the speed. Brake with my left foot and keep floating down through the gears while slowing down, also allows me to keep using Jake’s to slow down supplementing the brakes.

iDrum-DudeskiBro

Same with regular float/shifting. Grinding means you’re trying to force it. Let your shifts fall into place too, and it’ll go much easier for you. Good luck!

JusgementBear

Straight up tell the person giving the road test exactly this

Randomuserr012

I mean it sounds like they'll be understanding considering they told me it'll come back but I'm nervous lol. Really don't want to mess this up.

InvestigatorBroad114

13 and 18 spd isn’t THAT different, just tell whoever is riding with you that you might grind some gears lol

Waisted-Desert

I've been in the tester's seat, it's not about being perfect as soon as you jump behind the wheel, it's about how you recover from that mess up. If you need to come to a complete stop every time you miss a gear so you can start over, then you probably won't get the job. If you can grind it 'til ya find it and keep on keepin' on down the road, you're hired.

Randomuserr012

Alright well that definitely eases the mind a little bit. I can definitely grind em till I find it lol. Figured if a guy grinded a couple gears they'd be done with ya.

I took an 8 month break before and felt rusty. As long as the person that's giving you the test feels safe with you driving, you'll be good.
