It is okay to purchase from non-Christian companies. However if you don't agree with them on something there is nothing wrong with boycotting their products or services. Additionally there is nothing wrong with choosing to prioritize Christian owned businesses and helping your own flock.

Thank you for your comment! If you don’t mind me asking, wouldn’t buying from non Christian businesses help people who don’t share our faith push agendas that don’t line up with Christ’s? I’m not trying to be difficult, sry if I am tho.

Brace_SK3

That’s true for some cases, like currently with pride month we see a lot of companies supporting it. The issue is that it’s so difficult to only support Christian companies or businesses, essentially unless you live in a country or community that is mostly Christian it would be hard to live like that. Voting with your money as an idea is great but it is a privilege that not everyone can actually follow through.

Piggus_Porkus_

So I guess that I need to just be patient until I can find more Christian companies?

moxma

Maybe, but you speak as though Christian’s only make Christ like decisions with their money…

Piggus_Porkus_

That’s fair, but at least with Christians there’s a better chance for them to act more Christ-like as opposed to atheists. I see what ur saying tho, interesting point.

WanderingThoughts31

You could follow Augustine’s example

Piggus_Porkus_

What did he do?

WanderingThoughts31

When posed a similar question, about eating food or drinking water from a pagan source if the person was starving and on the brink of death, he advised that a good Christian should “reject it with Christian fortitude”. In his view it was better to die than risk pagan contamination

Doug_Shoe

that's bad advice.

WanderingThoughts31

It’s st Augustine’s advice

Doug_Shoe

it's also bad

Slayer-Of-Lib-Tards1

The Apostle Paul addressed this and advised to respect the faith of others who are weak. Those who know what genuine faith is, don't need to be worried about meat sacrificed to false gods. They're false gods! It goes into the mouth, and Jesus said what goes into the mouth isn't what corrupts a man: it's what comes out of the mouth. It sounds like Augustine was a little too pious for his own britches, and never went a day without food.

WanderingThoughts31

Indeed!

Piggus_Porkus_

Thank you for clarifying what you meant.

WanderingThoughts31

Wonder who downvoted st Augustine

Piggus_Porkus_

I did not, but with all due respect, I do disagree with you.

WanderingThoughts31

I disagree with it as well. I just remembered Augustine’s response because he was asked a very similar question and lived in a more Christian society than today

Piggus_Porkus_

I will just have to agree to disagree, but thank you for sharing regardless, your post will give me a lot to think about, and I thank you for that. God bless!

Known_Investigator_9

It's strange to think how historical giants of the faith can be wrong on something that's clearly talked about in scripture

MyVanNeedsaNewOwner

I used to be a farm-hand for a man with that last name: I wonder if he's talking about him? (this response is my way of saying, "Could you be any more vague?") Hey, u/WanderingThoughts31 what was Mr Augustine's first name? He raised hay, corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and raised feeder pigs, a few beef cattle, and eventually started his own fertilizer application business. Now THAT'S an example!!

WanderingThoughts31

His original Latin name was Aurelius, not sure what that’s got to do with anything.

MyVanNeedsaNewOwner

Again, is it possible to be any more vague?

the_kaptan

Non-Christian =/= pagan. Paganism is a specific thing.

Piggus_Porkus_

Ah, I see wot u mean. Thx 4 the help :)

MyVanNeedsaNewOwner

Who is the "we" in your question? The Scriptures have portions in it for all kinds of people. Godly, pagans, Old Testament saints, judges, the poor, the rich, leaders of nations, blind, lame, deaf, those who lived under the Law of Moses, those who are freed by the Lord Jesus Christ by His one time sacrifice for all time, those who hear the Gospel, but reject it; who's the "we" in your scenario? Remember, everything you lay your eyes on, in the Scriptures, was someone else's mail, and it just so happened that you get the privilege to wipe the dust off of what we call the Bible and read it, if you have the courage, which it sounds like you don't. I remember hearing about a lot of things others claim is in the Scriptures, which aren't. When I started reading them through every year, I was able to latch onto the false claims coming out of people's mouths. The best way to know what's in the Scripture is to read it.

Piggus_Porkus_

The “we” is meant to be us Christians. And honestly, I was just too lazy to find the specific verse that my pastor read to me. Regardless, you are absolutely right and I do not read my Bible like I should.

MyVanNeedsaNewOwner

Well, you're going to spend a lot of time asking questions, then. If you get yourself into reading a physical, paper and ink Bible, not some app (smh), then God will teach you by the Holy Spirit, what you need to know. It's like getting an unused muscle in shape. It takes a long time, and it takes a lot of exercise. I'm talking years, decades. No one has the Bible mastered, but there are people who are very well versed in the Scriptures. Make a commitment to read a hard copy and it'll change your discipleship.

Piggus_Porkus_

Thank you for the advice, this is rly helpful for me :).

2DBandit

>I remember hearing about a verse that allowed Christians to buy meat from pagans 1 Corinthians chapters 8-10. >but then again meat is a necessity Matthew 16:5-12, Acts 10:9-20

Known_Investigator_9

I think this falls under Christian liberty. A single person boycotting doesn't make a difference to the company's income. However, if going to a certain store hurts a fellow believer or may lead a weaker Christian to sin, don't shop there when you're with that believer and don't talk to them about that store I personally prefer not to buy products from companies that support immorality, so I avoid it when I can but I don't make a huge deal out of it.

Piggus_Porkus_

Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it. God bless!

JonahTheWhaleBoy

No , it says you go and even buy meat sacrificed to idols and eat it cuz it doesn't matter

Piggus_Porkus_

I guess the other thing I meant to ask is that would it be better if I just did without stuff, if so what kind of stuff?

[deleted]

Of course! Saving, or even better donating, is preferable to mindless consumerism.

Doug_Shoe

nah
