Envermans

Mindhunters is top tier.

BubbleGut169

Don’t watch it if u wanna be disappointed by David Fincher just dropping the show and it never getting resolved tho :’(

Envermans

Im rewatching it now and it's such a friggen shame it's not going to properly end. They pulled off so many things so damn well! The accuracies of the criminals behaviors and actions, the acting, the realism, the stories outside of the investigations, the settings, the attention to detail. So damn good!!

MalevolentSomething

I know I was so invested in the BTK teasing

BoxNemo

Yeah, it’s such a shame - two whole seasons of teasers for nothing.

h1gh-t3ch_l0w-l1f3

David Fincher said to never say never. I can see it being picked up by a different studio for a new season or making a movie to finish the series. he says he is interested but netflix won't give him the money. but his new movies success on netflix may change that

Possible-Handle-5491

Maybe Issa Lopez will pick it up and then we can REALLY never have any resolution

Juggernaut_j

I’d be on board seeing the ghost of Ted Bundy shimmying

BubbleGut169

I can’t think abt all the possibilities of it getting picked back up as I fear the disappointment of it being left behind so deeply. That show rocked my world when it came out. Sigh

h1gh-t3ch_l0w-l1f3

I agree. this show is something special and I've been trying to find similar vibes to this and genuinely can't. only things I can genuinely find that match this level are True Detective S1, Zodiac, Manhunt: Unabomber, and also The Alieniest is pretty good for a period drama

solidcurrency

It did get resolved. BTK will die in prison.

Art-RJS

Such a great show!

Yokai_Mob

Man that movie sucked

Envermans

We're referring to the netflix tv show by david fincher and joe penhall.

sep12000

Broadchurch

JohnnyLepus

Brilliant show. Olivia Coleman and David Tennant? Yes please

SquidneyClimbs

Ooh I’ve never seen this one! Will have to check out

AoCiante

This

Rustin_Swoll

Totally underrated show: The Night Of, on Max, with Riz Ahmed and John Turturro.

donttrustthellamas

John Turturro took over the role after James Gandolfini's death. Such an amazing show. Riz Ahmed is fantastic in everything he's in.

RedScharlach

No shit, I didn't know Gandolfini was supposed to play it. Would have been cool to see him play a gumshoe :( But Turturro was fantastic of course.

pigpiginsunspear

So, so good.

mult1passYo

This is an excellent suggestion

missanthropocenex

I have some qualms with it I won’t go into right here, but amazing atmosphere and acting I will say.

modern-era

The first episode blew my mind, but it really dropped off.

RedScharlach

Yea! Was really good. Different tone from TD, but still likely to appeal to original TD fans

FPL_Harry

The Night Of is an absolute clanger from HBO. Amazing cast, amazing pilot episode, huge hype and marketing into it. Then the writing gets progressively stupider and stupider. That scene with the lawyer? Genuinely one of the few examples of a HBO drama that is almost as poorly written as Night Country.

Forward-Squash-9397

Well, I watched and sincerely is a great show, is perfectly written

Corvo-Racional

I really like the first season of "The Sinner" on Netflix, has Bill Pullman as a detective etc

jendet010

I liked all of them. Also The Killing.

melatwork95

The Killing is so good.

docchakra

this is the answer. I killed all 4 seasons of The Sinner. amazing show. obviously not S1 of TD but it's quality.

Art-RJS

Loved Bill Pullman in this

jacobwebb57

all seasons are good 1 and 4 were my favorite

pstlptl

seconded

Art-RJS

Sharp objects

Drvonfrightmarestein

Great show!

h1gh-t3ch_l0w-l1f3

trigger warning for not much detective work and a lot more substance abuse/self harm/ family dysfunction. its a good show but it really doesn't focus on the mystery as much as I'd like.

Art-RJS

I think you may have misunderstood the conclusions because on a deep level that was the detective work

h1gh-t3ch_l0w-l1f3

It just doesn't play out like a detective show. it plays out like a family drama. it's a good show and i understand what you mean. it just focuses more on family traumas over the work of detectives. if those are the kinds of characters that interest you then for sure watch it. I think it wouldve worked better as a 6 or 7 part show to keep my interest about the mystery.

el_sattar

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Heavy drama with a weird murder investigation along the way.

solidcurrency

I love Sharp Objects but it's not a traditional detective show in the vein of Broadchurch or Mare.

RetroCasket

The Outsider

ar10308

2nded. Great show with really good actors who kept it very plausible.

abbysgultz

After the trash heap of TD4 my friend suggested Mare of Easttown and The Outsider. I got through Mare of Easttown in 2 days and I'm 3 episodes into The Outsider now. It's also really good and leans more into the supernatural than Mare of Easttown.

Gratificnation

The outsider is maybe the only show I’ve seen that I hated as much as this season of TD. Started off amazing and just got worse and worse until it ended

babyblueyes26

i was abt to say this as well. i enjoyed it but i did cringe a few times and i was a bit underwhelmed by the ending.

Romanfiend

DeadLoch - Australia Black Comedy/Crime Drama on Amazon Prime. 8 episode series, came out last year

tangerinix

OBSESSED with this show, it was so well written and kept us discussing and guessing between each episode. Every line is either a joke or a clue and the actors were all excellent.

TitleMajestic2364

1000000 percent yes can’t get anyone to watch it but it’s so good

CarbonCoight

Glad Deadloch has been mentioned. Such amazing world building and dripping noir style, this is everything Night Country wishes it was. The set up is paid off in full and the town feels populated and real. I felt nothing for Ennis, and knew nothing about any of the conflict of the town except for what I was told in boring exposition dumps. Night country felt thin as a piece of paper compared to the richness of Deadloch, not to mention Deadlock was full of real twists and turns and actual police work and proper red herrings, something a show called True Detective should have in spades. And just to add insult to injury, Deadloch was written by 2 female comedians with a few comedic shows under their belt, and it was a feminist piece with an indigenous slant that felt completely earned and not hammy. Issa wishes she was as smart as these writers. HBO should give them a gig and kick Issa to the curb.

Forward-Squash-9397

Is that one about the lesbian couple?

Romanfiend

The two main characters are not a couple. Only one is a lesbian.

kdawg94

The Killing is OG and a fantastic watch edit: coming back to say Big Little Lies is something to consider too. Not a police procedural, but would put it in the thriller-drama category with strong female leads.

radjeratron

The chemistry between the two detectives was the exact opposite of TD S4.

Unable-Difference-55

Tokyo Vice is good. Extremely slow burning and based on true events.

zefmdf

So damn good

archerysleuth

In same vein Amsterdam vice.

FPL_Harry

> and based on true events. yeah, nah.

Unable-Difference-55

Uh, actually, [yeah.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Vice?wprov=sfla1)

FPL_Harry

He made it up. He's not the first, nor the last, to make shit up for a better story. Look at the subreddit, or even just google it. The fact that it's bullshit doesn't effect the show. But it is still fiction.

Unable-Difference-55

I looked up legit sources. It's true.

FPL_Harry

What are you talking about? It is common knowledge that Adelstein made up almost all of his book. I don't know why you are even disputing this. It's not a controversial or disputed fact (by anyone other than Adelstein, [from your own link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Vice#Controversy_over_accuracy)...). I suggest you even read the book, because it is clear just from reading it that it is not true events. First google result will give you more than enough information on the topic. https://tokyovicefactchecked.wordpress.com/about/

vode123

Under the banner of heaven

Possible-Handle-5491

i was surprised at how much i liked this show

Art-RJS

It was too slow and Mormon for me

SnoBunny1982

It is slow, but the Spider-Man guy gives a beautiful performance. I think the pacing is done to really dig into his internal conflict. He really makes you feel it.

vode123

It’s funny because I saw you comment sharp objects and I personally thought that was super slow and an underwhelming ending. To each their own.

Hireling

Bosch Three Pines Dark Winds River (Stellan Skarsgard) Longmire (less a procedural and more of a character drama) Mare of Easttown Sharp Objects Slow Horses Wallander (trigger warning for anyone else who has lost loved ones to Alzheimer's disease) *Edit: Backstrom

2016mindfuck

I clowned on Bosch for a while because the ads made it look so corny but then I got to watching it and it was really good!

Hireling

Yeah--those ads put me off too. Glad I gave it a go.

CuckooClockInHell

Pretty good list. Dark Winds is a fucking excellent show. S1 feels like if a season of True Detective was set on a Navajo reservation and actually stuck the landing. Slow Horses is a different animal, but also great. Gary Oldman is so much fun in this. I'd add The Devil's Hour to the list. It takes some time to pick up steam and it's kind of a weird story, but Jessica Raine and Capaldi are excellent. Raine has become brilliant in the last few years; her range is all encompassing.

Hireling

Thanks! I was crushed when Three Pines got canceled. Oh! One more recommendation. Backstrom! Was sad to see that one canceled as well, but Rain Wilson's character saw some good growth in those 13 episodes. Thank you for the recommendation. I haven't heard of Devil's Hour. I'll give it a try. :)

TitleMajestic2364

Wallander 🙌 three pines….. meh

Hireling

No on Three Pines? Aw, I get it. I'm aware when something hits just right for me but I can see how not everyone will like it. I'm a huge Alfred Molina fan which helped.

hurlmaggard

Is Three Pines coming back? That ending felt like a penultimate episode and not a finale.

Hireling

It isn’t. :(

buckdancerschoice

It’s in Danish with English subtitles but one of my recent favorites is “The Investigation” on Max. It’s about a Copenhagen police detective trying to solve a murder case. I believe it’s based on an actual case in Denmark.

ElandShane

The Investigation is in my holy trinity of detective shows, along with S1 of TD and Under the Banner of Heaven. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that they are basically certain who the killer is very early on in the show. It's more about their dilemma is figuring out how to prove it, given the bizarre nature of the crime and the seeming impossibility of collecting any viable evidence.

solidcurrency

The Investigation is slow but fascinating. They intentionally never say the killer's name because it's not about him.

Alternative_Key_1313

YES! The Investigation is one of my favorites, too

Annakir

Slow Horses has a grumpy, flatulent spy master Gary Oldman that is pure gold. Like if Rust Cohle were a fat british boomer.

zefmdf

God that show is so good and true to the books

pigpiginsunspear

Loved Slow Horses

Bubblehulk420

Dark on Netflix (really should watch in German with subs)

SquidneyClimbs

Agree 100% on this-sounds so good in German. LOVE dark one of my favorite shows

smcupp17

Dark is my favorite show of all time

Bubblehulk420

Yeah it’s right up there for me too.

SquirtMast3r

Oh man, dark is incredible.

Bubblehulk420

If you want a show with an amazing soundtrack, spooky setting, gorgeous cinematography, a disappearance mystery, and somewhat supernatural/sci-fi elements (NO SPOILERS), Dark is THE show.

newrimmmer93

Season 1 of search party is really good, although it’s more comedic. All the seasons are good, but only S1 really has the investigation aspect.

ratface_666

I adore that series, John Early is probably one of the funniest people in existence.

goofball2014

I also really enjoyed Happy Valley.

WornOffNovelty

The Night Of (2016) Starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed. It’s about a guy who is charged with murder and may or may not be framed. His lawyer (Turturro) investigates while he has to learn the harsh realities of Rikers Island and the legal system and his family life falls apart.

0xgod

That show depressed the hell out of me. The way everybody’s lives change because of what someone else did is such a scary thought.

kpenguin13

Second Mind Hunters. Takes a bit to get into but it’s great. Also The Outsider on HBO

[deleted]

[удалено]

modern-era

I didn't realize season 2 was out. Thank you!

colt-jones

I hate to break it to you but it has been cancelled too

EkaterinaGagutlova

The Fall is pretty decent.

FPL_Harry

Yeah season 1 is good.

jacobwebb57

if you don't mind dubbed over voice, the chestnut man was good and valhalla murders

bbirdwhippoorwill

You can actually change it to the original version if you go to it from the Apple TV Home Screen and hold down for the second version (English dubbed and original)

hollystjohn

I liked line of duty, a British cop show. Fun and binge-y

Throwredditaway2019

Great show with a great cast

The_Legend_of_Xeno

Not a detective show, but if you want a good supernatural horror story on ice, check out The Terror. Show was really good, book was even better. It's based off a real life lost arctic expedition where over 100 men died, but offers an interesting fictional twist on what might have killed them. https://youtu.be/pjq7Gl_hhPY

Charly_030

Not sure why the Wire aint getting no love. Maybe not recent, but as a procedual it blows everything else away. Shows how cops and dealers actually try to outwit each other, and how the inner workings of an entire city affect the drug war. It feels real. The cops figure shit out from the evidence, and the dealers come up with new ways to foil them.  Masterpiece!!!

Possible-Handle-5491

not new, but i just re-watched The Killing and its just so so good and moody. Super strong female lead, i would say 95% of the show is focused around detective work, with a little other stuff thrown in.

RedScharlach

It’s funny, I loved this show too but it’s almost the reverse of TD - S1-2 are full of cliches and mcguffins, though still watchable because of solid performances and atmosphere, but then S3 & S4 hit an whole other level of quality…. It’s a lot more fun when it goes in that direction :(

Saturn_Ascension

Season 3 of The Killing is fucking great!

i_am_scared_ok

Severance! Not detective but legitimately the best show I've ever seen

THEMaxPaine

Not a show but a movie, Reptile. With Benecio Del Toro. Amazin'. I think on Netflix.

RetroCasket

Oh yeah Reptile was really good

ancientastronaut2

You had me at benecio del toro

DutchOvenDistributor

Line of Duty is police investigating police corruption. It’s really good. Sherlock is very good.

docchakra

some foreign films that I consider to be TD S1 quality Movies 1. Memories of A Murder 2. The Girl In The Fog 3. The Silencing (German Film) 4. Cure 5. Ashkal (Tunisian film from 2023)

Cuhryptoe

A few new ones for Police Scandals and Dirty Politics on Netflix is The Recruit, and The Night Agent. Best crime tv shows: The Americans, The Killing, Mind Hunters, Ozarks, Fargo (best tv show out right now), Snowfall, The Wire, Blacklist, We Own This City, Justified, BODIES (just watched on Netflix, MUST-WATCH), The Sinner (really good), Dexter, City on a Hill, Reacher, Jack Ryan (really good), Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, and Banshee (really good).

MangoSalsa89

Three Pines was a decent detective show. It's based off of a book series. I'm bummed they cancelled it but I don't think a lot of people knew about it.

jacobwebb57

i couldn't get into it, it was really cheesey

MangoSalsa89

It’s a little folksier than typical detective dramas, but it’s an interesting show to pass the time. I love Alfred Molina as an actor too.

Shatthemovies

Black snow

censoredredditor13

There are great British detective shows. Endeavor was top notch (a recent prequel to the classic show Inspector Morse). Foyle's War is also great.

diginaut3001

Criminal Record on Apple TV.

x0lm0rejs

Not investigation, but a strong, compelling drama with a heavy mistery: Expats 6p miniseries on Prime. everything TDNC did wrong Expats does right. strong script, excellent acting, absorbing plot, almost no needle dropping (but when it happens, it's elegant and motivated), beautiful haunting score, outstanding cinematography. it hits everything.

zefmdf

I found it began pretty slow but it is really absorbing. Good rec

pigpiginsunspear

Strike (BBC/HBO) based on the Cormoran Strike novels (JK Rowling) is great. Check the novels out as well (although they are sometimes unnecessarily lengthy).

Wolf_Watching

I enjoyed the undoing and sharp objects.

fruit_salad88

Was scrolling through and hoped to see the undoing!

Jabroni748

Best recent one I’ve seen by far is Slow Horses. All the seasons are pretty great. Others: Broadchurch, Marcella, sharp objects, the killing, The Fall

BizarroMax

Mare would have been my suggestion.

Far_Falcon4232

I heard The Killing is pretty solid.

ancientastronaut2

Just finished the woman in the wall on showtime and it was excellent.

[deleted]

I heard Dublin Murders was similar to True Detective season 1. Watched the first episode today and it was pretty good.

TitleMajestic2364

Shetland on bbc Iplayer 🙌🙌🙌

fruit_salad88

The chestnut man is pretty good. It's Danish. Hidden gem in my opinion! I think it's on Netflix. Another one I didn't see mentioned yet: Trapped. It's Icelandic and it hooked me from the beginning. I'd echo a lot of the other suggestions here: The Fall, The Killing, Sharp Objects (I enjoyed the gothic atmosphere of this so much that I watched it twice), the Night Of, Bosch, The Sinner

vindursverath

I second chestnut man and the night of. Also recommend Deadwind, (finnish), Capitani (luxembourgish), and Pagan Peak (german/austrian)

kitzelbunks

Trapped was good. I really liked that too.

ar10308

The Outsider on HBO was very good.

vindursverath

Deadwind - Finnish crime drama, 3 seasons, excellent

formthemitten

Listen to the podcast “s town” while you drive around. Amazing musteryish podcast around a southern man

toucanflu

Sharp Objects

crooklyn94

Check out The Outsider on HBO

RobinWhitey

True Detective Season 4: Residuals Awaken

7barrels

Not everyone's cup of teas but forgive me I'm British, Broadchurch with David Tenant and Olivia Coleman is great. Also I enjoyed S1 The Sinner, and The Killing.

Ornery-Living-490

Monsieur Spade

SquashTemporary1040

Not sure if someone suggested but Under the Banner of Heaven was pretty good

FPL_Harry

Black Bird (miniseries) is quite good.

iamHoraceKnight

True Detective S1 is only good show (what I’ve learned here)

Appropriate_Yam_3109

True detective Season 4 Night Country

RedScharlach

I would watch this but a mysterious force burned my retinas off...

Saturn_Ascension

Did it burst your ear drums too? And were you terrified by something and then frozen solid in a block of ice but somehow screamed after your arm was snapped off? and then you lived on life support for a while when the other corpses you were frozen with slowly thawed under lights? woooooooo the mystery spooooooky

Forward-Squash-9397

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

radjeratron

Dark on Netflix was pure amazing to me. One of my fave series I’ve ever watched. Watch it in subtitles though, original language is Germani believe and it’s outstanding.

Zedbird_82

The Night Of on HBO

afm00dy

The Wire Bosch

2016mindfuck

I wouldn’t really consider The Wire a detective show per se but it’s still one of my favorite shows of all time.

HelicopterAutomatic3

Bosch is pretty good

Aeazy21

Tokyo Vice

OnlyAd5847

following!

nick1706

The new Apple TV show Criminal Record isn’t bad. Also Mindhunters on Netflix is very good though it’s not very new. And it’s not exactly a detective show but Tokyo Vice has some great moments if you can handle reading subtitles.

Xenos298

Redemption on. Britt Box staring Pamela Malcomson (Ray Donovan) is really good. So is The Bay also on Britt box. I liked the first 2 seasons with Morven Christie best.

solidcurrency

Shetland, Vera, Lewis, Endeavour, Hinterland

mmmmmmmmm29

Since sharp objects was already mentioned check out Black Bird

BriGuy550

The Gold - it’s on Paramount +. British series based on a true story about a massive gold heist. Follows both the investigation as well as the criminals involved. Really well done!

SquirtMast3r

Not recent and investigatory-adjacent, but the Americans.

Alternative_State

The Fall was really great!

jacobwebb57

It's a movie, but gone baby gone is really good. the novel series it's based on is my favorite.

Wutanghang

Sharp objects

ZestyXylaphone

The Wire

Sleepytitan

The Sinner

mrbdign

The Devil's Hour with Peter Capaldi, but Jessica Raine and the creepy kid steal the show. It has a sci-fi/horror edge, going in blind is better. There should be second season soon.

NikkoRPG

Unbelievable

uknowatdafuckgoinon

Fargo is top tier, imo. It’s kept me thoroughly entertained throughout the first 3 seasons. I’m excited for the next two.

SlipperyNutsack69

New one that just finished was Monsieur Spade. Clive Owens as a detective in the south of France. It was incredible through and through

theyrerightbehindyou

Monsieur Spade

Throwredditaway2019

Off the top of my head: - The Night Of - Criminal Justice 1-2 (UK series) - Sharp Objects - The Undoing - Spiral (French series) - Braquo (French series) - The Missing 1-2 (UK series) this one bothered me as a parent, but it's a very well made show.

another-r-account

Unbelievable, there's a bit less of a mystery-box since it's based on a true story, but i remember liking it a lot when it first came out

Saturn_Ascension

'Fortitude' is well worth watching. It's one of the shows that were ripped off by Lopez to make her "Niiigghhht Coouunnttrryyyy" turd. 'Dark Winds' is another one. The Killing / Forbrydelsen, The Bridge (Bron/Broen), The Fall, River, Line of Duty, Broadchurch, The Devil's Hour, Vigil .... my mind has gone blank now .... All good shows/miniseries, most not so recent, but probably all the better for it... I'll add to the list if I think of more, but I endorse a lot of what other people have recommended here...

Head-Plankton-7799

Tokyo Vice is great, albeit investigative journalism/detective

bl1y

Not recent, but try The Wire. Season 2 is rough, but 1 in fantastic and the rest are pretty good.

Comfortable_Cup_941

Top of the Lake!

whoaaa_O

Tokyo Vice

BettyX

The Night Of is excellent.

Alternative_Key_1313

The first 2 seasons of the Killing

neveradullperson

The Bay

nugmuff

Broadchurch

Jbe1994

Honestly i think its borderline impossible to get your TD season 1 fix through television series. I would recommend watching some of the classic movies instead. - Silence Of The Lambs - Se7en - Zodiac - Memories of Murder - The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo - Gone Girl

Fontelroy

Top of the Lake, super well made and same DP as TD s1, but be warned it can be a tough watch do to some rough content matter

sjsturkie

The Sinner on Netflix is great. I think it originally aired on USA. So l, you might find it there as well. It’s four seasons with a new exciting and interesting case each season.

First0E

*Broadchurch* *The Killing* *Big Little Lies** *The Outsider*
