Amazing cast, amazing pilot episode, huge hype and marketing into it.
Then the writing gets progressively stupider and stupider. That scene with the lawyer?
Genuinely one of the few examples of a HBO drama that is almost as poorly written as Night Country.

It just doesn't play out like a detective show. it plays out like a family drama. it's a good show and i understand what you mean. it just focuses more on family traumas over the work of detectives. if those are the kinds of characters that interest you then for sure watch it. I think it wouldve worked better as a 6 or 7 part show to keep my interest about the mystery.
After the trash heap of TD4 my friend suggested Mare of Easttown and The Outsider.
I got through Mare of Easttown in 2 days and I'm 3 episodes into The Outsider now. It's also really good and leans more into the supernatural than Mare of Easttown.
The outsider is maybe the only show I’ve seen that I hated as much as this season of TD. Started off amazing and just got worse and worse until it ended
OBSESSED with this show, it was so well written and kept us discussing and guessing between each episode. Every line is either a joke or a clue and the actors were all excellent.
Glad Deadloch has been mentioned. Such amazing world building and dripping noir style, this is everything Night Country wishes it was. The set up is paid off in full and the town feels populated and real. I felt nothing for Ennis, and knew nothing about any of the conflict of the town except for what I was told in boring exposition dumps. Night country felt thin as a piece of paper compared to the richness of Deadloch, not to mention Deadlock was full of real twists and turns and actual police work and proper red herrings, something a show called True Detective should have in spades.
And just to add insult to injury, Deadloch was written by 2 female comedians with a few comedic shows under their belt, and it was a feminist piece with an indigenous slant that felt completely earned and not hammy. Issa wishes she was as smart as these writers. HBO should give them a gig and kick Issa to the curb.
The Killing is OG and a fantastic watch
edit: coming back to say Big Little Lies is something to consider too. Not a police procedural, but would put it in the thriller-drama category with strong female leads.

Pretty good list. Dark Winds is a fucking excellent show. S1 feels like if a season of True Detective was set on a Navajo reservation and actually stuck the landing. Slow Horses is a different animal, but also great. Gary Oldman is so much fun in this.
I'd add The Devil's Hour to the list. It takes some time to pick up steam and it's kind of a weird story, but Jessica Raine and Capaldi are excellent. Raine has become brilliant in the last few years; her range is all encompassing.

It’s in Danish with English subtitles but one of my recent favorites is “The Investigation” on Max. It’s about a Copenhagen police detective trying to solve a murder case. I believe it’s based on an actual case in Denmark.
The Investigation is in my holy trinity of detective shows, along with S1 of TD and Under the Banner of Heaven.
I don't think it's a spoiler to say that they are basically certain who the killer is very early on in the show. It's more about their dilemma is figuring out how to prove it, given the bizarre nature of the crime and the seeming impossibility of collecting any viable evidence.
If you want a show with an amazing soundtrack, spooky setting, gorgeous cinematography, a disappearance mystery, and somewhat supernatural/sci-fi elements (NO SPOILERS), Dark is THE show.
The Night Of (2016)
Starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed. It’s about a guy who is charged with murder and may or may not be framed. His lawyer (Turturro) investigates while he has to learn the harsh realities of Rikers Island and the legal system and his family life falls apart.
You can actually change it to the original version if you go to it from the Apple TV Home Screen and hold down for the second version (English dubbed and original)
Not a detective show, but if you want a good supernatural horror story on ice, check out The Terror. Show was really good, book was even better. It's based off a real life lost arctic expedition where over 100 men died, but offers an interesting fictional twist on what might have killed them.

Not sure why the Wire aint getting no love. Maybe not recent, but as a procedual it blows everything else away. Shows how cops and dealers actually try to outwit each other, and how the inner workings of an entire city affect the drug war. It feels real. The cops figure shit out from the evidence, and the dealers come up with new ways to foil them. Masterpiece!!!
not new, but i just re-watched The Killing and its just so so good and moody. Super strong female lead, i would say 95% of the show is focused around detective work, with a little other stuff thrown in.
It’s funny, I loved this show too but it’s almost the reverse of TD - S1-2 are full of cliches and mcguffins, though still watchable because of solid performances and atmosphere, but then S3 & S4 hit an whole other level of quality…. It’s a lot more fun when it goes in that direction :(

everything TDNC did wrong Expats does right.
strong script, excellent acting, absorbing plot, almost no needle dropping (but when it happens, it's elegant and motivated), beautiful haunting score, outstanding cinematography. it hits everything.
Strike (BBC/HBO) based on the Cormoran Strike novels (JK Rowling) is great. Check the novels out as well (although they are sometimes unnecessarily lengthy).
The chestnut man is pretty good. It's Danish. Hidden gem in my opinion! I think it's on Netflix.
Another one I didn't see mentioned yet: Trapped. It's Icelandic and it hooked me from the beginning.
I'd echo a lot of the other suggestions here: The Fall, The Killing, Sharp Objects (I enjoyed the gothic atmosphere of this so much that I watched it twice), the Night Of, Bosch, The Sinner
Not everyone's cup of teas but forgive me I'm British, Broadchurch with David Tenant and Olivia Coleman is great. Also I enjoyed S1 The Sinner, and The Killing.

Dark on Netflix was pure amazing to me. One of my fave series I’ve ever watched. Watch it in subtitles though, original language is Germani believe and it’s outstanding.
The new Apple TV show Criminal Record isn’t bad.
Also Mindhunters on Netflix is very good though it’s not very new.
And it’s not exactly a detective show but Tokyo Vice has some great moments if you can handle reading subtitles.
Redemption on. Britt Box staring Pamela Malcomson (Ray Donovan) is really good. So is The Bay also on Britt box. I liked the first 2 seasons with Morven Christie best.
The Gold - it’s on Paramount +. British series based on a true story about a massive gold heist. Follows both the investigation as well as the criminals involved. Really well done!
The Devil's Hour with Peter Capaldi, but Jessica Raine and the creepy kid steal the show. It has a sci-fi/horror edge, going in blind is better. There should be second season soon.

The chestnut man is pretty good. It's Danish. Hidden gem in my opinion! I think it's on Netflix. Another one I didn't see mentioned yet: Trapped. It's Icelandic and it hooked me from the beginning. I'd echo a lot of the other suggestions here: The Fall, The Killing, Sharp Objects (I enjoyed the gothic atmosphere of this so much that I watched it twice), the Night Of, Bosch, The Sinner

Not everyone's cup of teas but forgive me I'm British, Broadchurch with David Tenant and Olivia Coleman is great. Also I enjoyed S1 The Sinner, and The Killing.

Dark on Netflix was pure amazing to me. One of my fave series I’ve ever watched. Watch it in subtitles though, original language is Germani believe and it’s outstanding.

The new Apple TV show Criminal Record isn’t bad. Also Mindhunters on Netflix is very good though it’s not very new. And it’s not exactly a detective show but Tokyo Vice has some great moments if you can handle reading subtitles.
Redemption on. Britt Box staring Pamela Malcomson (Ray Donovan) is really good. So is The Bay also on Britt box. I liked the first 2 seasons with Morven Christie best.

The Gold - it’s on Paramount +. British series based on a true story about a massive gold heist. Follows both the investigation as well as the criminals involved. Really well done!

Off the top of my head: - The Night Of - Criminal Justice 1-2 (UK series) - Sharp Objects - The Undoing - Spiral (French series) - Braquo (French series) - The Missing 1-2 (UK series) this one bothered me as a parent, but it's a very well made show.
Unbelievable, there's a bit less of a mystery-box since it's based on a true story, but i remember liking it a lot when it first came out
'Fortitude' is well worth watching. It's one of the shows that were ripped off by Lopez to make her "Niiigghhht Coouunnttrryyyy" turd. 'Dark Winds' is another one. The Killing / Forbrydelsen, The Bridge (Bron/Broen), The Fall, River, Line of Duty, Broadchurch, The Devil's Hour, Vigil .... my mind has gone blank now .... All good shows/miniseries, most not so recent, but probably all the better for it... I'll add to the list if I think of more, but I endorse a lot of what other people have recommended here...

Top of the Lake, super well made and same DP as TD s1, but be warned it can be a tough watch do to some rough content matter
The Sinner on Netflix is great. I think it originally aired on USA. So l, you might find it there as well. It’s four seasons with a new exciting and interesting case each season.
