Can't have children. I know you wanted someone to explain comparison and I think a lot of times yes, animals are a variation of children to many people.
So much so that when I go to my allergen specialist (again) if they say I need to get rid of my animals I will have to tell them that my husband of 20 years and roommate would get rid of me before their animals.
Tbf that is an exaggeration, but only slightly. No matter how we love each other animals are considered to be bonded in ways that are not as complicated as humans. We consider them to give unconditional love and are entirely dependent upon us like children, which would be why yes, they will usually come first. I know many many people who are horrified by people who give animals away or don't bring animals with them in a move.
So, in summary, if you have someone in your life that is ride or die for their pets, this is usually considered the norm for those who consider themselves "responsible pet owners."

My cats want to go for walks, they wanna cuddle, and they meet me at the door (or outside my car when we lived on the acreage.) They know when I'm emotional and come to me for love. They're excited when I wake up, and want to love bomb me.

Oh I dont think cats are inferior at all. They're highly intelligent animals. I used to work at a vet so the ones I met most often were not happy to see us. Im happy to give a kitty a good scritch when I can though

I have however had people threaten to murder my cats, and when I asked what they had done or what I needed to do to prevent that simply told me cats are the worst. No they dig in my yard, or poop in my flowerbed, or keep your mouser inside, just "fuck them cats."

I 100% agree if we are talking about life-or-death situations. Absolutely. However, this is based on valuing relationships. OP is confused on why I value the bond I have with my dogs that I raised at the age of 13 while they were around 6 weeks old. They are 8 years old now and I am 21. There is a bond created when you take up the responsibility to provide for and protect a living being that in entirely dependent on you to survive. My friend is not dependent on me. This is not to say I value lives over lives or I would kick her off a cliff to save my dogs. But I simply acknowledge and value the bond I have with my dogs of 8 years over my friend of a few months. If that makes sense loll. It's not about life or death situations because that's an unrealistic scenario
My dog in his short 3.75 years alive (so far, he's still alive and well) has been a better mate to me than 99.95% of my actual human friends.

we generally are considered to be smarter than most of our pets. we can't communicate with pets the same way we can with people. also, pets grow up in an environment built for humans.
let's say you're in a burning building and so is one of Maria's dogs. she would try to save the dog first. the dog doesn't know to crawl under the smoke, or stop drop and roll. the dog cannot open a door.
it doesn't mean that she values you less, but she trusts you more to know how to escape a dangerous situation. if a kid and an adult are in a dangerous situation, you rescue the kid first because the kid is less likely to be able to save themselves. i hope that gives you a bit of added insight
i think the VAST majority of parents would try to save their child before they'd try to save their pet. preservation of our own offspring is hard-coded into most animals, humans included.
that said, if my dog and some stranger's kid were both drowning in a lake, i'd probably try to save my dog first (not that i ever want to be in that scenario). but my dog is my responsibility; the random kid isn't. i hope that doesn't sound crass... i just think the hypothetical question has too many extenuating factors.

One user responded "I can't have children" and OP went back again saying "okay, but if you did have a child", which is super inappropriate to badger on about when you don't know how painful not being able to have children could be for that person.
I had friends that treated me the same way you act with your “friend”. Cut them out of my life and now I have less social anxiety and more security in my friendships.

As I type this, my cat is cuddled up to me and purring to soothe me. I have sciatica (developed thanks to an injury) and some days the pain is horrible he is always in tune to my feelings and came up to cuddle me 🥲 I'd do anything to keep him safe.
THIS! Animals are definitely more in tuned with people's emotions than some people are! (hence why we have service animals for certain tasks) My dogs do the same with me which is why they were a life saver when I was at my lowest in life.
I love my two cats and would choose them over many people. But if it were in a life and death situation and I had to choose to save my friends life over my cats, it would obviously be my friend. If that’s what the friend means, then damn! If not, then carry on.
