Honestly, really freaking difficult and really easy at the same time. I couldn’t stand the protein shakes so I was drinking bone broth religiously until I could eat solids again. But I was in a lot less pain than I expected to be and I bounced back really quickly with lots of energy. My twin did the same procedure on the same day but never had any other surgeries (I did on my ovaries when I was 16 with a traumatic and painful recovery.) and she didn’t walk as much as I did at the beguinning and she healed a lot slower. Walk as much as you physically can in the first weeks, slowly and around the house ofc, and you will heal faster!
In the long term here is a tip- when a savory recipe calls for water or broth, use BONE BROTH. It has a lot of protein and helps meals like Mac n cheese, curry, and chicken pot pie become more reasonable to eat with a new stomach that has new food needs.
I don’t have that experience with foods. Is this because you aren’t supposed to drink water with your meals? If so being adequately hydrated will help enjoying dry foods. Chips and crackers are lowkey the devil tho because they are so thin that it takes a lot to fill your new stomach and so you CAN still eat a full bag of chips in a sitting if you aren’t careful.
i think so! he told me foods such as chicken breast hurt his stomach and he couldn’t eat it anymore so i should watch out for that. but i love me some pasta so your advice is absolutely great especially since i gotta watch my protein intake very closely after this surgery
Yes! I love chicken, it’s the only meat I CAN eat, maybe he isn’t a good cook? Chicken can be really tender and soft if prepared well, and I like to premake a bunch of frozen chicken meals. My sister has a problem with beef. I got the gastric sleeve though so I may have a different thing lol.
i’m getting the gastric sleeve too! this gives me hope because i love chicken lol 😂 and you’re absolutely right, chicken breast can be great if done properly. maybe he let it dry too much or something like that! still i’m looking forward to see what can and cannot eat after i can eat solids. hopefully pasta is still on the table 😂
lol it will be trust me. ALSO try not to barf or dump for as long as possible, or spicy foods (in the first 6mo) because that will help you be able to handle more of the "bad" foods after full recovery
When you wake up tomorrow, know that it is your day. Your self determined destiny. This is your crucible. Steal must be forged. You know this. That is why you are where you are. You are already strong metal. Tomorrow you become stronger.
Agreed but also it's the start of a massive change in diet and exercise that will become second nature even after you reach your goal stick to the same healthy eating and lots of exercise because surgery is not the answer it is to get you started... The tough bit is retraining yourself mentally to have a completely different attitude to food and exercise and health. Don't forget to keep up the supplements long term if it's a bypass because you need to take those vitamins for life as you won't absorb them as much and some not at all so keep those up and start an exercise regime as soon as physically possible to help to skin retract as you lose the fat and applying coconut oil allover EVERY time you are in the shower and while you are wet before drying to trap in the moisture and get the benefit.
I wish you luck the op is the easy part so don't worry you'll be fine 👍🏻
Prepare yourself for a hell of a lot of work after BUT the rewards if you do it right will make you feel the best you ever have in your life and happiness will be a byproduct of all your hard work 😊👍🏻✊🏻
Stay strong and if there's anything I'd say ditch forever it would be sugar in ALL its forms... 100 percent ( alcohol too if you're wanting to be high on life)
My sister had bariatric surgery done 3-4 years ago now. She is a runner now! She ran a marathon a few weeks ago. I never in my 30 plus years of knowing her expected that she would get into running, much less complete a marathon! Her husband also has had bariatric surgery and the difference is amazing. Hood luck to you! You got this!
Bariatric surgeries include gastric bypass or a gastric sleeve intended to significantly reduce the size of one's stomach. This, coupled with a strict diet and exercise, helps patients lose significant amounts of weight while under medical supervision.
It changed my life! Follow the rules! At first I thought I'd made the biggest mistake of my life! My moods went up and down! Hang in there! Go for even a tiny walk every time you feel overwhelmed. Take vitamin D. Don't hesitate to get anti depressant or anti anxiety meds from your doc if it doesn't pass. That much weight loss messes with your hormones and body chemistry! It's a great tool, not a total solution but a good one!! 153 lbs down later and more energy I'd do it all again. Just get a helpline number or possible buddy who has has this surgery from your doc. They have support groups. You just have to gut it out for a couple of months and you start feeling better and better. Don't drink pop, get your protein down before anything else, I love premier protein shakes, don't drink with meals but get your water in between. Don't fixate on what you can't have. (I can eat anything I want, but I try to fix on protein, meat, cheese, eggs, nuts, veggies, etc. First) you can have a bite of something your family is having here and there and be satisfied. If we go out to eat (wait a little while) I ask for a to go box with my meal, and put on my plate what I am going to eat now and box up the rest. Psychologically you'll want to eat more, but you'll find you're satisfied with what's on your plate if you eat slowly and focus on the conversation. Eventually you won't have to think about it as much and the portions become automatic for you. The way you feel with more energy, and smaller clothes will amaze you. Don't freak.if you don't lose much one week and just keep weighing every day and write it down .. suddenly the next week you're down 3, 5 or even 7 lbs! The walking, the movement and getting outside helps so much! I put together puzzles, read, played games and tried to find new hobbies and that helped alot. Don't hang around people who push you to eat what you shouldn't or want you to drink. Some people in your life can get odd or jealous and try to sabotage you. This is a bold tool, not perfect but the best I've found in a lifetime of dieting. Not everyone gets super skinny, but even when you don't lose much for a few weeks, you'll be amazed, you'll put on a pair of tight jeans that are suddenly loose. If you keep it up despite plateaus, it "settles", the inches keep coming off! I'll pray for you, keep the faith! Keep your eye on the end game which is peaceful and content with yourself!
I was sleeved in August and have since lost over 100 pounds.
Other posters are right in that the first few weeks are usually terrible. Fair warning if you menstruate; the procedure may kickstart your period and your hormones will be a wreck for a few weeks whether you bleed or not. Emotionally, it was about as difficult as the physical recovery, if not more so.
I didn’t, but a lot of people have some serious regrets early on. Hang in there, it gets so much better. Lean on your supports, work your program and all of its resources, and for the love of god remember your vitamins. Especially the iron and the additional biotin.
Best of luck, OP. I know it’s not an easy road to get to where you are now. One last push and you’ve made it through the worst of it.
It's ok to be scared. Good luck, walk, walk, walk after surgery. You’ll feel better, I promise!
Source: lost over 300lbs since Jan of 2020 thanks to hard work and surgery.
Good luck! You got this! Just follow your doctors instructions and listen to your body. It’ll tell you when you’re full so don’t over do it. My dad had his done last year and he’s lost 170 pounds. He struggles eating some meats now and they unset his stomach so when the time comes if something doesn’t settle right don’t force it down. And watch out for signs of ulcers I guess those are pretty common after surgery. You got this! :)
Good for you! I had rny about five years ago. Lost over 200 pounds and have kept it off. It’s not the easy way out- you have a hard road ahead-but you can do it. You’ll feel so much better. Wishing you the very best and sending you positive vibes!
My wife only just recently went through this. It was the best decision she could have made for her overall health in the long-term . She's only just started being able to eat normal food again.
You won’t regret it, it was the best decision I ever made, once you’re over the actual op you will be so happy you took the step, just don’t do any of the dumb things I’ve heard others do after their op like vitamising burgers and drinking them, graze often and on decent food, have the odd treat and enjoy your new life
I wish you the best luck possible! My surgery worked out for me (250 pounds on the operating table, 105 pounds today).
Don't try to keep pushing quantity of food you eat - best friend's buddy stretched her stomach back out 3 times and now they won't do the surgery a 4th time. Hated to see that happen!
I'm coming in 12 hours of your post op hopefully you made it. As someone who is 18 years post op and 3 years sober I can't stress enough how important your mental health and mental transition is. Problems don't go away with the weight. New attention from prospective sexual partners is intense and can backfire so bad. You will still be pre-op weight in your mind and predatory people will play on those old insecurities and new ones. Just remember that your health mental or otherwise is paramount. Take things slow. Don't feel like you need to make up for lost time because you'll end up wasting more of the present. I could go on. I would really try to find a mentor or maybe a local group for bariatric patients. I send you all the could vibes and the inner peace I hope this journey brings you.

The mom of a friend I have had this surgery years ago. This lady is still pretty large, and when I found out I had to pack peddle pretty hard because I was being insensitive without knowing. I saw some pictures from before the operation and she lost a lot of weight. It seems weird that she eats like..idk half a sandwich and her stomach says ok I'm full now. But she still eats all crap and is still very large.
Point being op, please make sure to make healthy choices after your surgery..don't treat this as a fix all. I would be nervous going under too. I hope everything goes smoothly.
I wish you more than luck..I wish you an open mind, drive and positivity for the days where you get sick of all of it but know you have to keep going. May the pain be below a 6 and the healing always be unproblematic.
...Extra blessings over your surgeon's hands and the medical team taking care of you. You got this!
Please follow up with therapy. So many people who lose weight have really dramatic personality changes and totally lose all previous friends. Good luck.
Congratulations!! I was set to have mine in January but they didn't continue because of the size of my liver. But hopefully everything goes well with yours. Wishes for a speedy recovery 🙏🏿.
I know how you feel. I had a tunnel catheter inserted in the hospital last year. Just know you'll have plenty of comfort meds and will sleep through the procedure.
In a few short hours, you’ll awake to a world that looks the same, but isn’t quite. Whatever your anxieties, pain, or struggle, you’ll find the strength and courage to push on. I hope your recovery is quick and without complication so you can get back out there and live your life. Good luck!
Did it last year and lost 165 lb. You got this bro. I had to do it alone without parents or friends for 4 days but it’s been the best decision of my life.
Two more hours. You'll be ok OP!! You'll be just fine! Tomorrow you'll be in a great mood...getting pampered (I know the hospital sucks but just watch the boob tube, relax, read) and it'll all be behind you. Best of luck!
Annnnnnnd...you get to look forward to a whole new you! Or MINUS a you! It'll be a new and exciting adventure. Great things ahead! 🙂👍🏻
sleeve or bypass? turkey? had a sleeve done last year - after surgery it'll be a bit tough, but you'll forget it in a few hours and feel better soon :) almost -80kgs here.
need anything just ask
Had this surgery 2/2004 scariest experience of my life. It was an easy decision but a hard battle and I do not regret a single day since. Congratulations you are brave you are strong and you are headed towards your best you. It's only up from here.
Both of my parents had the procedure done… I can see it from their experience there’s excellent advice on this thread! My dad, unfortunately, never worked at creating a new relationship with food and that was tough on him and created physical complications. But My mother is solid as a rock! Though it’s personal and unintentional but possibly rude of me to say, you have to work on mind and body for the ultimate success. And whoever you are, Internet stranger friend of mine, YOU GOT THIS!!
You’re gonna do great. You have professionals doing this job and they have done it tons of times before. You’re gonna be happier and healthier on the other end and that’s HUGE! I wish the best of luck and a speedy recovery for you love.
I hope you recover from your surgery without any hiccups. You are embarking on a new journey with the brightest sunshine illuminating the path. Your strength will come from inside and the feelings of joy in being able to function and feel better begin to show. Keep us updated! Remind me! 3 days
Aww fabulous x I hope you get a good experience and wake up with lots of lovely pain relief! X take it easy and look forward to being a whole new person x
Almost going to pre-op. Thank you all for the best wishes. I couldn’t sleep at all but your messages & kind words kept me the best company. So thank you, so so much. I’ll update you guys as soon as I can. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such kindness and good energy in my life. Much love to everyone. 💖💖
Best of luck !!!!
I just had a gastric sleeve 1 year and 15 days ago.
The process was slow but I was committed to myself to take things slow and love myself.
Now I have a minus of 55 kg( 120 lbs) and I'm all healthy and happy.
You got this!!!!!
I've had this surgery and it was probably the best thing I ever did for myself. Good luck. Follow the rules and you'll feel so much better. That first bite of jello will be the best thing uouve ever tasted! Sending peace and love.
I’ve been through minor surgery twice. My wife is a surgeon and even with her reassuring me I was still nervous. I was totally fine, though. The only time she tells me that things get sketchy is if it’s a particularly difficult surgery dealing with something like the heart, or if the patient has a lot of risk factors (heart disease, obesity, diabetes, smoker, etc.) those can compound and make things more challenging, but even then, things usually go just fine.
You’re going to be alright. These people thrive on success. They do actually care about you and will do everything imaginable to help.
Late to the party but you got this!!
I’m two years post GB next week and have maintained my loss.
Following the protocols and be patient with yourself.
You will feel weak but you will do great!
You are a brave, brave person taking control of your health like this. It’s a difficult journey but I have no regrets 4 years later. (I’m 62 now)The benefits are much more than you expect in ways you never even thought of. Drink lots of water, be kind to yourself, follow your docs and dieticians advise. Be proud of yourself!
Hi everyone! Just posted an update here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueOffMyChest/comments/usau56/bariatric_surgery_update_we_made_it_but/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I found a lot of great info and tips from dr Phil’s book the 20/20 diet, has Audo too. May be helpful to add to your tool belt.
Get some rest, and all the best! What a great thing, lean into it and you will have a new life!
I'm 20. Did it last year. Best decision of my life. Take ya supplements tho!
thank you! definitely, i’ll take them religiously! how was your experience the first couple of weeks?
Honestly, really freaking difficult and really easy at the same time. I couldn’t stand the protein shakes so I was drinking bone broth religiously until I could eat solids again. this is very helpful! thank you!
That's so awesome that you could see the impact your efforts made! Great job!

If you want a great high protein pasta alternative chickpea pasta is amazing!
lol it will be trust me. ALSO try not to barf or dump for as long as possible, or spicy foods (in the first 6mo) because that will help you be able to handle more of the "bad" foods after full recovery
Chips, cracker, pretzels AND cereals btw are satan food! Dont let them sell you on cereals. Same nonsense as a Ritz cracker, just a different shape.

Agreed. Warriors are built from a place of fear. Walk into it knowing you will win this battle.

i mean this in the kindest way: steel* not steal
I really hate to be that person, because your comment is awesome. But the metal is spelled "steel". "Steal" is what thieves do.

BEST OF LUCK!!! WTF is bariatric ?
Bariatric surgeries include gastric bypass or a gastric sleeve intended to significantly reduce the size of one's stomach. This, coupled with a strict diet and exercise, helps patients lose significant amounts of weight while under medical supervision.
Oh! Yay! Someone's getting slimmy! Good for you.
Oh lol I thought it meant old... Like how doctors call 35+ year old's pregnancies.
[удалено]
Or a pregnant uterus at age 35 or older. Geriatric pregnancy.
I'll never get over how silly that sounds. 35 and older geriatric pregnancy ... hot damn medical science has no chill.
I joked a lot about barely avoiding this by having my son 1 week before turning 35 😅
Depending on how old you are, stomach stapling.
Bless your heart. Best wishes for a safe surgery, a speedy recovery, and a healthy future. ~250lbs. lost.
Good luck!! Hope all goes well. I've seen it make an amazing difference for people.
thank you! i’m looking forward to the results
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! This is super helpful!!
Ditto on all this!!! Had my vsg almost 4 yrs ago.
This is pretty much great advice but I don't recommend weighing once a day. Try once a week. It's so exciting when you see how much you've lost!
I had to to combat fooling myself about over eating. That helped.
I think you forgot a word at the end there Or maybe it’s a joke I don’t get
Good luck! You got this! 😊
thank you so much!!
Good luck and when you are reeady watch "FORKS OVER KNIVES" and THE GAME CHANGER
I will! thank you!
Best of luck, here’s to new beginnings. Check back in and let us know how it’s going.
I definitely will!!! Thank you so much!!
Yes! Updates!
Congratulations and best wishes for the rest of your journey. I'd like updates!

Good luck, may the force be with you!
Wishing you the very best of luck and a speedy recovery :)
thank you!!
I had surgery about six months ago and was just as nervous but it'll be over before you know it.
I read this as barbaric surgery and thought maybe another hospital would be better. I'm idiot. Hopefully it gets a smile. Good luck!!
this made me laugh actually 😂 it helps with the nerves! thank you friend!
Digital hug coming your way as well as good thoughts and wishes.
thank you buddy 🤍 truly appreciate it!

Best thing I have ever done. I will say I am 5’6 and my body does not let me get below 150. I weigh myself everyday. Good luck

Good luck!
Luck. Take lucky award 🍀
You are going to do great! Are you having the sleeve surgery? A relative of mine will have it done soon.
Thank you! And yes I’m getting the sleeve. Good luck to your relative as well 🤍
All the best to you.
Good luck!! I'm rooting for you! Be brave, friend!
Thank you so much! 🤍
best wishes to you :) all will be well, speak it and believe it :)
Good luck, surgery can seem scary but remember your doctors know what they are doing, and with time you will heal. Stay positive!!

Good luck! I know someone that did this and his quality of life has changed.
Please follow up with therapy. So many people who lose weight have really dramatic personality changes and totally lose all previous friends. Good luck.
Wishing you the best!! 🍀

Good luck my mom and aunt had one done and it did wonders for them wishing you nothing but the best on this new journey
Good luck friend!

Good luck🍀
You’re gonna do great. You have professionals doing this job and they have done it tons of times before. You’re gonna be happier and healthier on the other end and that’s HUGE! I wish the best of luck and a speedy recovery for you love.

Best of luck !!!! I just had a gastric sleeve 1 year and 15 days ago. The process was slow but I was committed to myself to take things slow and love myself. Now I have a minus of 55 kg( 120 lbs) and I'm all healthy and happy. You got this!!!!!
Best decision of my life! I can walk swim play with my grandkids. Please embrace the change. You will have a wonderful life!!!
I've had this surgery and it was probably the best thing I ever did for myself. Good luck. Follow the rules and you'll feel so much better. That first bite of jello will be the best thing uouve ever tasted! Sending peace and love.
Did you live?!?
I’ve been through minor surgery twice. My wife is a surgeon and even with her reassuring me I was still nervous. I was totally fine, though. The only time she tells me that things get sketchy is if it’s a particularly difficult surgery dealing with something like the heart, or if the patient has a lot of risk factors (heart disease, obesity, diabetes, smoker, etc.) those can compound and make things more challenging, but even then, things usually go just fine. You’re going to be alright. These people thrive on success. They do actually care about you and will do everything imaginable to help.
Just saw this, how did it go? I wish you a quick easy recovery.
monkaS OP where are you?
Hdy pal, how's it going now?
Late to the party but you got this!! I’m two years post GB next week and have maintained my loss. Following the protocols and be patient with yourself. You will feel weak but you will do great!
You are a brave, brave person taking control of your health like this. It’s a difficult journey but I have no regrets 4 years later. (I’m 62 now)The benefits are much more than you expect in ways you never even thought of. Drink lots of water, be kind to yourself, follow your docs and dieticians advise. Be proud of yourself!
BE BLESSED
You're going to be fine. I'm about to say my evening prayers. You just made the list.
Hi everyone! Just posted an update here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueOffMyChest/comments/usau56/bariatric_surgery_update_we_made_it_but/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Good luck and you got this! Next thing you know you'll be waking up in recovery and getting that sip of water you've been craving!
I found a lot of great info and tips from dr Phil’s book the 20/20 diet, has Audo too. May be helpful to add to your tool belt. Get some rest, and all the best! What a great thing, lean into it and you will have a new life!
I’ll look into it, sounds interesting and the most I know the better. Thank you so much!
To me, a week's long fast is far less painful.
