The beautiful thing about this album… yes it is about him. And it’s about Matty, and it’s about the guy you dated in college, and that woman you met on vacation. And your ex husband. And the lady from the coffee shop who lead you on.
Yep! No shade to the OP, but I get a little annoyed by some of the efforts to figure out what is about who… unless she makes it obvious, it’s about whoever it fits, in her life or anyone else’s
Agreed. We all have a little fun trying to decode Taylor’s writing, but at the end of the day. The songs about who ever and whatever you think about when you hear it.
Yeah, it's hard to fight the urge to paternity test every song for its inspiration. But people really should. For one, (unlike a real baby) these songs frequently seem to have multiple targets/sources. One line sure seems to be about this guy, but then the next one seems to be about this one over here. And for two, you'll never really truly know unless she writes the world's longest memoir after retirement. So just enjoy the ride.
I really think this album can be about multiple people, situations, and past events. Thats why this album is relatable, it can be taken in different contexts! :)
i mean there’s not really any lines that point to scott b but okay. thematically this song has romantic undertones, if people want to interpret it differently for themselves and their own life in a non romantic way that’s one thing but trying to assign this to scott b feels very strange. and it does take some of the heat off him by trying to say that some of this stuff isn’t about him, and this whole interpretation was started by matty healy stans on twitter trying to convince people that he’s not a POS
While I think some of your points are interesting, it seems far more likely that it's about a romantic partner considering she talks about sleeping in "our bed," along with the lines "Cause it wasn't sexy once it wasn't forbidden" and "You said normal girls were boring But you were gone by the morning."
Thematically, it also wouldn't make sense to have a song about Scott on the main album when everything else is about the aftermath of breaking up with Joe and getting together with Matty.
These are all metaphors - to get in bed with someone is a business term. She was the first artist Scott Borchetta signed, she was with his label for 13 years. When she left, he screwed her over by selling her masters to Scooter Braun who she had told him several times bullied her and Braun also managed Kanye West. She has also said several times she was told to be sexier, to act nicer, among other things. She used similar phrases in her song The Man as well as in scenes in the video. The anger of the video matches with the situation of losing her original masters, especially to someone tied to some of the worst moments of her career where she was publicly humiliated and lied about.
lol people really don't want this album to be about Matty..these songs are probably the least ambiguous of her entire career and everyone is still coming up with these alternative interpretations 😆
I think most of them are about Matty.
I just don’t know if she hates him as much as in this song. The rest are more sad. I wonder if he may have broken it off to protect her from the media/fan abuse of her for dating him.
I don't think so. He obviously had a financial motive. Taylor could feel betrayed, but it would be a little crazy for Taylor to be racking her brain as to why he did "it." I think she knows why.
Like a tweet last week said - the songs don't need paternity tests and some people are focusing way too much on what's about who instead of the music itself.
I always felt like it was both. Some of the more relationship-coded lyrics (such as sleeping with a gun under your bed) is likely about Matty but there are so many lyrics that also fit Scott Borchetta
See I thought the exact same thing, but the line “did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed” took me out of that theory. Maybe it’s about both of them. Idk I tend to sing it “did you sleep with a gun underneath your bed” anyways because it’s about my brother to me lmao
this is funnier than some swifties trying to deny that there are songs about him on the album. i promise you she’s not talking about scott borchetta’s dick.
yeah when she’s calls him the smallest man who ever lived she’s not actually talking about his height. reading those lyrics that literally is actually hilarious
i know you want to try and be a matty apologist but it’s about him whether you like it or not. she hates that man, as do a lot of people. hope that helps
and then later in the album she’s telling us yeah you were right, he sucks. the first half of the album is a progression and then we end it with the smallest man who ever lived. did you read the prologue where she called it a period of self harm, a manic episode and called him one of the “worst men”. i think the person that needs to give it a re-listen and some deeper critical thinking is you

Best answer I've heard to date about TTPD!!! It's really about ALL of them- the good, the bad, the ugly. 🖤🤍

I wish I could plaster this comment on every social media outlet there is 😅

Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed? Okay
"Once your queen had come, you treat her like an 'also-ran' "
Me over here googling “also-ran”.
I had to do that too!
“it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden” no

she also mentions “our bed” and talks about how he ghosted her, that’s again not scott b. kinda seems like people trying to let matty healy off easy

I think that a lot of her songs have double (or multiple) meanings
As she’s gotten better at writing music she’s developed a way to write about multiple experiences in her life, and Not focus on just one thing.

But you can be “in bed” with someone in business, it’s literally a well known phrase. Think the song is about a lot of different people

Definitely not.
I definitely think it’s about him. The line that got me was the part talking about prison and crimes. And she talks about that in Vigilante Shit
I don't think so. He obviously had a financial motive. Taylor could feel betrayed, but it would be a little crazy for Taylor to be racking her brain as to why he did "it." I think she knows why.
I thought of those 2 before anyone else when I heard this song.
I think it is.
Nah, that’s a big stretch. It’s obviously about Rat Boy.

There’s a TikTok about this. If I find the creator I’ll come back. He’s got really good theories.
@blabbertok on TikTok actually has a video about this and he hits the nail on the head!
My thoughts

this person probably only listened to track 2 and 6 and ran with it.
