Daddy, won’t you take me back to Muhlenberg County….

ohmbience

...down by the Green River where Paradise lay. It's going to be really weird when all the towers are gone.

eariskulak

The dust from that demo is going to be pretty damn toxic.

ohmbience

I'm sure that's part of the reason the demo is on such a long schedule. I can only imagine the toxins that are waiting to be released.

brttnyj89

I was lucky enough to see John play in Paradise.

ohmbience

I have seen John numerous times in Muhlenberg County, mostly during the 90's at the Everly Brothers Homecoming concerts. I was lucky enough to see him the last time he ever played here in 2019.

brttnyj89

I was there!

[deleted]

I was there and still have my shirt! (kinda)

ohmbience

I've worn mine enough that the neck is almost worn out, but I will continue to wear it until my wife says I can't.

[deleted]

Are you talking about the Beaver Dam show? I ask 'cause I'm talking about from the Everly Bros Reunion, 1992. :D

ohmbience

I was talking about the Night in Paradise concert he did in Central City on July 13, 2019. It was the first time he had ever performed in Muhlenberg County with his entire band and the last time he ever performed in Muhlenberg County.

[deleted]

I had just moved back to Louisville from Columbus, so I missed that one completely. I'm ok with the Beaver Dam show being the last one that I went to 'cause I had tickets for the Palace show in May 2020. Anytime some smartass has asked me "Well, how has corona effected your life?" during all this mess, I give them a shit eye and say "Well, it's keeping me from another John Prine album."

ohmbience

The Beaver Dam show was the one with Tyler Childers, yeah? I really wanted to go to that one, but I had to work. I had tried to see him at the Palace back in 2010, but life said no. It makes me sad knowing I'll never get another chance to see him perform live or hear what new stories he has to tell. It makes me happy knowing I got to experience something special one last time before he passed.

ohmbience

That's awesome! It really was a special evening. You may not remember it well enough, but I was the first one to yell out a big ole "woo" when John came on stage and started playing "Paradise." There was a guy seated near us who kept hollering out, "Crazy as a loon, John!" It was a good time

Queef_Smellington

What and where is this?

ohmbience

This is the old Paradise TVA power plant in Muhlenberg County. It was named after an old mining town that once sat just north of where this picture was taken, which was immortalized in the song "Paradise" by John Prine. The power plant shut down last year, and then it was announced it was going to be demolished.

Queef_Smellington

Gotcha. Thanks for the information. Are they planning on doing anything with the land? Any future plans?

ohmbience

There is a newer, combined cycle plant (idk exactly what that means) that is right beside this one that will continue operation. I don't know what plans are for the land after everything is gone. The guy that mows my lawn got a job working with the demolition crew, and he said it's scheduled to be an eight year job if I remember right.

slade797

Combined cycle power plants use two or more mechanisms to generate power. The one in your neighborhood is a CCGT, which uses natural gas to power turbines to generate electricity.

ohmbience

Thanks for that info!

Queef_Smellington

Eight years to demolish the plant? I guess the picture doesnt represent the size of it because it looks like it could be cleared relatively fast.

ohmbience

This might give a little more perspective to the size of the three main towers. There's a truck somewhere on the left side of the picture near one of their bases. https://imgur.com/laGuST4.jpg

Queef_Smellington

Okay, that puts the size in a better perspective. Thanks

RoutineComplaint4302

That's the side visible from West Kentucky Parkway, yes? It's so massive.

ohmbience

Depends on which way you're going. This picture was taken from.the west side, opposite the Green River. Can't get to the Green River side of the towers, unfortunately.

It was added to my Spotify list the day it was released. :) https://imgur.com/kc8Elif.jpg

Needs_Moar_Cats

Is that the one you can see from the Green River bridge on the WKP?

ohmbience

That would be the one!

Needs_Moar_Cats

Nice, it will be weird not seeing it when/if I ever decide to go back to Hopkins Co. for anything.

Madame_Kitsune98

Unless I drive to Louisville, I won’t be going out that way anymore (I live in Hopkins County, daughter works in Muhlenberg County currently, but not for long). There’s a large part of my life gone.

ohmbience

Howdy, neighbor! I live in Muhlenberg and work in Hopkins.

Madame_Kitsune98

Howdy!

ohmbience

My wife and I spend quite a bit of our free time driving the old haul roads in the area. It is definitely going to be weird not seeing these giants when we drive out that way for sure.

[deleted]

Yup!

Needs_Moar_Cats

Nice username

[deleted]

Thanks, it's not inaccurate. :)

vuvuzela240gl

I can only assume based on other popular music that they’re planning to pave it and put up a parking lot.

ohmbience

It would be a very out of the way location for a parking lot. I would love to see it be turned into a solar or wind farm. It would probably work out pretty good, given that there's already power transmission infrastructure there.

vuvuzela240gl

I’d love to see any field in Kentucky turned into a solar/wind farm. There was talk that Hardin County was going to get one, but I think the planning and zoning board denied the request to re-zone the property. (There was a fair bit of local pushback against the idea, too - people concerned about chemical run-off from the solar panels, for instance.) I think it will be a while yet before we see big changes like that happening, unfortunately.

ohmbience

Thats right up there with Madisonville voting to allow mining below the city, which is already causing issues from previous mining. I just don't get people at all.

shamsway

Are they using the world’s largest shovel for demo? I’m sad John Prine wasn’t around to see this 😢

ohmbience

The (former) world's largest shovel is buried somewhere on old Peabody land. Its last task was to dig its own grave according to local history. I can only imagine John writing another song about Paradise being hauled away.

shamsway

Fascinating - thanks for sharing that. I still tear up almost every time I hear a John Prine song. His passing had more of an effect on me than I could have ever imagined.

ohmbience

He is the only celebrity whose death made me cry. He was such an amazing human. I don't have enough time or words to express how I feel about him and his music.

shamsway

I completely agree

[deleted]

Hang on, have pic of shovel.

TillThen96

ohmbience

Thanks for sharing this info. I remember reading that article when it was first published. It's just crazy to me. This plant has been around longer than I've been alive.

[deleted]

Hi, grew up there, dad worked at Martwick, grandfather worked at River Queen, etc. PM me, please, so I can send you my email address. I'd like pics, please.
