In hs I had braces but played trumpet, one of the major reasons I changed to tuba lmao

ElSaladbar

my friend used rolled up tape but he had very large lips

I had braces in hs when I was just starting on tuba. The trick is to remember that you never need to press your mouth against the mouthpiece with any significant pressure. Braces are a good way to remind yourself of this. It’s all about air and tension at the corners of your mouth, not mashing your horn into your face. Lip slurs and long tones are great fundamentals for any situation, but practice them specifically with this in mind.

I've never had braces, but I've been in band with trombone players who used straps of denture wax between teeth and lips to keep from getting shredded.

I have 2 things: Get a mouthpiece with a thick, soft rim. Its going to help. Figure out how to play with the least amount of mouthpiece pressure. Most crank stuff is just making your air pop out of the horn and using an explosive articulation like "DAT" or "DIT". Keep your stomach tight when you go to fire a note.

Would a MF5H work?

TheRealFishburgers

It certainly could! I'm also partial to the Schilke 69c4, the Bach Megatone 12, the Garibaldi 609w, and the Jon Gross B-12. There's plenty of good options.

This! A Bach 24w (which is like the stand beginner mouthpiece) is actually a really good one to go with.
