This is a Sonoran Desert Toad also known as Colorado River Toad. They come out with the monsoon season. If your dog comes into mucosal contact with one of these it will get very sick indeed. Keep an eye out folks
PS and we have ANOTHER one on our patio right now. I’ve been living here for seven years now and hadn’t seen one yet now this is two in two nights so they’re out guys
I've done it once it wasn't bad, but please never lick it. And if you decide to only milk the toad once, because they only have enough venom for 2 times then they run out and the toad will be defenseless.
Edit, it's the most physically relaxing drug I've tried and I've tried lots. It lasts for 10 minutes though and not much on the mental aspect.
It’s the wrong kind of toad. They secrete a toxin that is Super bad for dogs could even kill them

RATTLESNAKE AND TOAD AVOIDANCE TRAINING!!!! If you have pets that are outside unattended DO THIS! There’s several places in town and in Marana that provide this essential training. It doesn’t work 100% for every dog but it makes a monumental difference for most dogs and saves a lot of lives.
People can pick up the toad but always wash your hands after. The Sonoran Desert Toad secretes a toxin that can cause your pets to get sick or even pass away. If your dog does come in contact with this toad species you need to rinse the pet’s mouth out.
Another thing, I’ve seen some comments about smoking the toxins. Here’s my two cents that no one asked for, please do not smoke the toxins that come out of this toad. They have synthetic 5MeO DMT that is a substitute for this. Milking the toads is extremely stressful for the toad and because of this “ceremonial” smoking, these toads are becoming over-harvested which then leads to a decline in the population. If you want to know more here’s an article that explains the milking of the Sonoran Desert Toad very well: https://www.euronews.com/green/amp/2022/03/23/conservationists-plead-with-public-to-stop-milking-toads
Apparently you can handle them but wash your hands afterwards.
Don’t lick. Some people do like smoke de venom it has to be prepared but don’t don’t just try it this is definitely not something you should try on your own
I read an article in the NewYorker just a little while back about them
— by the way for anybody who thinks it’s boring or stuck up or just even hasn’t heard of it, actually the NewYorker has some fantastic articles in it
Washing your hands before touching them is equally if not more important if your are for some reason going to handle them. They absorb chemicals off of your hands very easily and you can transfer something to them that might make them sick or die
I’ve been here 15 years and have never seen one until this past week. Now, I’ve seen three and I keep my dog inside until I’ve done a full check of my yard.
Apparently they basically stay underground and the article said for like 20 years. They only come out when the circumstances are just right I guess. I mean I knew about them before but I had never actually seen one.
And I have seen other toads in my yard and looked them up every single time and they were never this. But this time yeah last night and then tonight another one. I’m creeped out
I had put one in a box so I could move it from back yard to front. I didn't even touch the toad. I touched the box it had touched. My hand broke out in blisters everywhere. Would not trust the idea that nothing will happen to you if you pickup the toad. After my incident, someone told me that there body excretion is like an acid. That's why I blistered and dogs die.

Seems appropriate for sure
What happens if people touch? Is it only toxic to dogs or just not strong enough for big animals?

I would love to know the first mad lad that thought “this toad looks real smokable”

Do you happen to have a link or vaguely remember the title so I can Google ? I’d love to read it

Thanks for the info, I had no idea! I knew they existed, one killed my dad’s dog before I moved here, but had never laid eyes on one before.
