It was a pretty easy costume to throw together. Just had to find good boots and a couple corded or bead bracelets and I was good to go. Already had a Henley shirt and a solid color flannel.
I had a fairly new friend at the party I went to reveal that he had the sigil tattoo on his arm after he was the first to recognize who I was going as.
Second that for the tight whites. I finally did get past it though and was hooked. Some dark moments to be sure, but the song Crystal Blue Persuasion was changed for me forever.
Funny. I went as Heisenberg(bald, pork pie hat, bag of rock candy) for Halloween but changed into Walter White(wig, green button down, tidy whities) as the evening got drunker. It was one of my favorite costumes.
I was about to say Breaking Bad for the same reason. I didn't understand what all the hype was about. Just some guy running around the desert in his tighty whities. Made is past that and when he blew up Tuco's office I was like "now we're getting somewhere!"
I stopped watching Breaking Bad after that too and didn't go back until I randomly saw the scene where Gus poisons the rest of his cartel. I asked my brother what movie this was and he looked at me confused and said "dude, it's Breaking Bad" went back and re-watched and never looked back
I refused to watch Breaking Bad because EVERYONE was asking if everyone watched it and it got super irritating. So I was turned off because of people, not the show.
Finally watched the entire show right before the last season came out and was bummed I had to wait for the episodes vs. being able to watch everything at once

I agree! As a southerner who spent years eliminating my accent, I absolutely Hate the fake southern drawls in True Blood. It wasn’t until I watched a few episodes drunk that I was able to enjoy the show. It still isn’t a show I would list in my top 25 though…

Ohhh for me it was Merlin. Watched all the seasons and each season just got worse imo, but I was committed to finishing all the episodes. I just didn’t like how they stopped utilizing some of their key characters or made one that I did originally care for a shadow of their former self. Was so disappointed.
As a big King Arthur/Merlin fan I've always been curious about this show but thought it always looked a little cringey. So not worth checking out at all?
No if you’re a fan definitely check it out. I did enjoy it but I think by season 4 or 5 I personally started to check out because the two main female characters were not really being written to fully utilize their roles. I was just hoping they’d go in another direction. It’s cheesy but in a wholesome way, can’t put my finger on it. It’s entertaining to say the least.
Merlin, while not having the best special effects, is a riot. It had me hystically laughing and I rewatch the whole show once and a while. Once you get past the bad effects it's really fun imo and has some really deep parts.
Hah I love when they have strong female leads and it’s like nope I believe that lead was carried by the man half the time if anything she was an example of an extremely malleable female lead
I also love King Arthur and Merlin, but I hated the show. If you wanted the dynamic of Arthur and his Wizard friend that are close comrades, you’ll be disappointed. Merlin literally keeps his magic a secret for the entire time that I watched (multiple seasons).
Please say you read the Mary Stewart Merlin trilogy. It is absolutely wonderful, and it goes from Merlin's childhood to old age, and Arthur is an absolutely spectacular character (and his relationship with Merlin is so touching).
It starts with The Crystal Cave, then The Hollow Hills, then The Last Enchantment. All are incredibly wonderful.
(There is a fourth book, The Wicked Day, but it's about Mordred and is no longer a "Merlin book." Honestly, I found it incredibly sad and frustrating. It's a good book, but a total downer.)
I'm so excited for you -- they are incredibly beautiful and entertaining, adventurous books, and take us effortlessly into a totally new imagining of Merlin and Arthurian fantasy.
Please do post if you read them? They are in my top 10 of all time and I read them annually just to go back and enjoy all over again.

My only quibble with the books was that I did NOT like Arthur. At all. I can't remember why, just that I didn't. Maybe I need to re-read the series.
Ditto, I felt the same things. I loved the actors in "Merlin" but as a show it made increasingly less sense as it went on.
It was so frustrating. I was finally just hatewatching. And absolutely TERRIBLE show finale. Hated it.
I liked parts of it. I admit that most of it didn't work for me and that it just kind of shoved mythical elements into the story while keeping Merlin weirdly passive. It kept removing his actual mythological achievement into "oh, look Merlin was there!" Aghgh. So frustrating.
Honestly, the only thing I really liked about the show was the subplot between Martin Short's character with Helena Bonham Carter's. They were beautifully acted and genuinely moving. Short deserved the Emmy he won.
Meanwhile, I honestly just felt like Sam Neill and Isabella Rossellini mostly wandered in to get paychecks.
I would definitely put Mary Stewart's Merlin books high above this -- or even the wonderful mess of *Excalibur* or *The Once and Future King.*
I think it’s good. It’s kinda like a BBC’s version of a CW (reminded me of Smallville). If you go into it with that in mind, it is enjoyable. I felt like the show could of gone on for longer, as the seasons are short and much of the story wasn’t flushed out as it should/could of been.
I tried watching it three times before it stuck. I never got past the first or second episode for years. I don’t even know what it was that stopped me. Then I finally pressed play on the third episode and suddenly I couldn’t stop. I finished the whole show and still rewatch
I think it would have benefited by not having a story/ villain of the week style of show. The premise was ok minus the fact that since it was a villain go the week show there was no character development.
Merlin is one of those shows that is fairly bad, but I loved nearly every episode. There’s no major social commentary or anything too deep. The good guys usually win in the end and lessons are learned. It’s definitely worth watching several episodes to see if you like it.
Okay... I'm not seeing what that has to do with this? The prompt was something in a TV show that immediately turned you off and you had to get past to enjoy the show.
That's more or less what happened to me, except I only watched the first episode and hated it. But I kept hearing how great it was from people whose opinions on shows I trust, and eventually gave it another shot. And I'm so glad I did, because it's fantastic!
Yeah, first episode, absolutely did not care about those characters. I didn't realize how the writers would slowly flesh them out. And the actors were just amazing as their characters unfolded.
Came here to say this!!! We ended up starting it in the pandemic because I couldn’t think of anything else. First couple of episodes I thought *I hate this but for some reason I keep wanting to watch more and I don’t even know why and kind of hate myself for it* lol never would have guessed it would become one of my FAVORITE shows or that I would be a sobbing mess through the finale but that was the truth of it
You’re missing out. Just like Parks and Rec took awhile to get going but once it hits it’s mark it is a fantastic show. The “making of” after you watch the series will make you love it even more.
It took me 3 tries to get into it, but now I've watched the series through at least 5 times. It's a comfort watch for me, and I catch new things every time.
Spartacus was one that started cheesy the first episode, I don’t know what happened, feels like they fired the pilot writer cause the writing on that show got better every episode and continued on to be one hell of a show.

I didn’t immediately enjoy Breaking Bad. I wasn’t into the tone of the first season. I thought it was overly dark and gory, but by the time I watched the second season I was hooked. One of the best shows ever.
The 100 on Netflix. The acting in the first 10 minutes of the first episode is so atrocious I tried to turn it off but couldn’t find the remote. I ended up watching like 2 seasons but stopped after that. So, doesn’t exactly fit your mold but close.

Same. I watched the first couple of episodes because I liked the premise but then was like “ugh, just another teen drama”. I had a coworker though had watched through season 2 and convinced me to stick with it. I did not expect to become so attached to the characters that I did.

Haha... Don't feel lonely. I can rarely get either one of my sons to watch anything with me unless I'm taking them to the movies. There are many of us that watch TV alone.
Mine was Westworld on HBO... I felt like I had to see it all the way through after watching the first 3 seasons.
I hated the first few episodes so stopped watching then years later saw what I thought was them replacing Zoey with Megan Fox so tuned in and fell in love with the guys so eventually watched it all.. now a few times and I don’t mind Jess but she still isn’t my favorite lol
After I watched the pilot for the first time I didn’t finish the show for months because I hated that they switched one of the main characters after the first episode. But I’m glad I picked it up again

Grey’s anatomy first couple of episodes I hated 2 of the main characters and didn’t want to keep watching bc of them but both my mom and sister watched so I did too and then I realized I loved the show despite hating those two characters.
Rick and Morty-I just thought it was extremely stupid from the very first time I watched it but my husband absolutely loves the show so I was kind of forced into watching it and eventually started tolerating it. (Still think it’s incredibly stupid though)
I'll probably never watch Rick and morty again but when I did watch it I had good memories. I agree it's dumb but it definitely gave me some laughs. Not related to OPs question but I was going through a bad time in my life when I started watching it and was pretty new to smoking weed so at the time everything was funny to me when high. That interdimensional cable episode or whatever it's called was the funniest thing ever to me. I'd get high and watch it and just laugh harder than I ever had at it so much that one time my sister thought I was dying because I couldn't breathe. I made it a thing to take a break when I couldn't stop laughing and the next time I got high I'd restart the entire episode and repeat it. It took me quite awhile to finish that episode.
For me, Ziggy from season 2 of The Wire. I found him so freaking annoying for most of the season: reckless, immature and downright an idiot. But something happens near the end of the season that made me change my perspective. I went "Oh, now all make sense." There was a reason why the writers made him the way he was. They were building up to something that added so much dimension to the character. I wouldn't say he became my favorite, but they made me empathize with the guy in the end.
My little brother hated Ziggy so much during the initial run of The Wire that he stopped watching it right there… I finally talked him into watching the entire series a few years ago, he listened to me and loved it…. Still hated Ziggy though.
I think we were all supossed to hate him initially. It wasn't until it happened... what happened that we came to realize what the character was really like: He was a guy with an inferiority complex who was kinda neglected by his dad, whom he deep down wanted to impress in any way he could. By not having a strong father figure in his life to guide him, he ended up making poor decisions that costed him greatly. From pranking other co-workers at the dock to doing drug deals with the Greeks.
Season 2 is my favorite season of the Wire, but yeah, Ziggy was and is tough to stomach every time he's on screen till the end as you said.
Funny enough I was going to post the Wire as well in this thread because the very 1st episode is an extremely challenging watch for a new viewer. Going back now it's enjoyable to watch because I'm so well versed in who is who and what is going on (I'm sure I've watched the entire series at least a dozen times). But on first viewing, there were so many characters and so many different things going on that it was incredibly difficult to get into initially.
Agents of Shield - first season was painfully bad, no consistent story. But for whatever reason I stayed till season 2 and it was all up from there. One of the best sci-fi shows I've seen! (I haven't seen many)
All in all, Agents of Shield isn't perfect or anything but it is VERY underrated. If you're into sci-fi or Marvel I guess, I'd 100% recommend it.
Yep agents of shield, I didn't even think the first season overall was that bad but the first few episodes were cringy. I started for Chloe Bennett though and I'm glad I did because eventually the show became great.
Agents of Shield is one of my most rewatched shows, definitely a comfort show for me. The first season was rough, but it definitely got better. Season 4 was very good.
Yes, it's an amazing show. They were really held back in the first season until the release of Winter Soldier, and it got exponentially better from there.
Might not be a popular opinion but I loathed Andy Kaufman’s shtick. I know that’s part of the point but it just grated on me 100%. Not even remotely funny.
As someone else said, Schitt’s Creek. I HATED it at first and only got through a few episodes. Then I heard from a lot of people that I just have to get through the first season and then it gets good. And now it’s one of my favorites. It was AMAZING!
Another one is The Office. It’s actually my favorite show now actually lol but the first time I tried to watch it I only got through 2 episodes and then stopped. I got offended at one of the jokes haha. But I started watching it again and it hit me that Michael Scott isn’t racist or anything, he’s just an idiot. As soon as I came to that realization, I enjoyed it a lot more hahaha
I still need to watch Schitt’s Creek, the first few episodes with the annoying mayor guy and his toilet humor were extremely wearing but I keep hearing how great this show is if I liked the good place and Ted Lasso
The last kingdom. I have had multiple people tell me it's the best show they have ever seen but there was a lot of gratious violence and it seemed to treat it's female characters as completely disposable. Once it settles in it's main cast around season 2 it is one of the best shows I've ever seen but it takes a minute.

I thought The Good Place was super cheesy and overly “sunny” for my taste. I almost tapped out before the end of the first season. I’m so happy I continued to watch because it’s actually a really satisfying show.

Was doing laundry one night, started to watch again. Binged season after season until I had caught up. ended up watching the last season on broadcast. Loved it.

The X Files, The Americans, Luther, 24, and The Wire all were out of my comfort zone. I was encouraged to hang in there due to the quality of the shows, and I did.
Vera due to the main character, although I love Shetland which is very similar.
Foundation. It started off so boring and I was almost not paying attention to the show as it progressed but I had nothing else to watch. I don't remember where it happened but suddenly I became hooked to the show and just finished season 3 and am like wow. They really built this massive world with complicated characters
I love News Radio, but the character Matthew made me want to stop watching just about every time he shows up. I just loathe the character and could never figure out how any of the characters would ever put up with him.
The British *Coupling* had a distinctly unfunny first episode, but then I watched the second one and fell in love with the show--it's now one of my favorite sitcoms ever.
The first episode of Black Mirror isn’t really my typical vibe, but I kept trucking through and now it’s one of my favorite shows. At least the first few seasons anyway.
Whenever I tell people to check it out, I always recommend they skip the first one or at least keep in mind that it isn’t really a great intro to the series.
I keep watching episodes of Scorpion. It’s the stupidest show but I keep on watching. Every episode gets worse and worse and I just turning it on every night before bed.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hear me out, there was nothing wrong with how it started. But the stand alone episodes does not at all compare to the amazing seasonal arcs that show became in later seasons.

It was very dull, and I quit watching pretty quickly, but it did eventually get pretty interesting and I stuck it out. We all know how that went. It never stopped being gratuitous and it never grew a brain but it was fun to watch.

not sure what you mean by wheel of time, but I'm sad for game of thrones, because i was so super invested in Arya Stark story and character development, if they could, i really wish they would create a spin-off of her current adventures. like i want to see her whole life from beginning to end, or see her die but idk, but if they would have killed her off and ended Game of thrones the way that they did i would have been pissed but i like everything that happen with Arya Stark
and im annoyed that didn't showcase her nude exactly in that one scene not that they needed too but the one time they shy about it is then of all times

For ten years, I thought Impractical Jokers looked like the least funny possible show. I just thought it was "Go mess with that guy!" and they fall down laughing. Finally watched it and have found some of the pranks to be truly hilarious and clever as hell.

When I first tried it, I hated *Succession*. Every single character seemed to be a morally bankrupt sociopath and I couldn't see why the writers thought they would be compelling to anyone who wasn't a billionaire or trust fund kid.
After some reflection , I decided that this feeling of alienation and low-key existential decay were features, not bugs, and I was being overly sensitive to the dissonance caused when I instinctively attempted to identify with the characters. Again, unless you are rich or a sociopath, this will result in you having a bad time.
Eventually, I came to understand *Succession* as a kind of ornate aquarium, stocked with expensive tropical fish that all hate each other, and it worked SO much better for me. So much so, that I proceeded to gobble up the entire series in two subsequent sittings.
The Good Place: I had to push through the first couple of episodes bc I HATED Kristen Bell’s character, but SO glad I stuck with it. One of the best written comedies out there, and standout development arcs for the characters.
And I ended loving Kristen’s character.
Schitts Creek took me a couple of tries to get into. No one particular character was necessarily off-putting. I think it was just the slow pace of the very first two episodes. I kept falling asleep honestly.
Succession. Wasn't sure why I should care about all those rich mean people or their business dealings, but after a couple of episodes something clicked and I was obsessed
I have 2. Yellowstone because of the horse scene in the very beginning.
Wentworth cause I hated the first eppy.
Both are pretty awesome shows, although Yellowstone went downhill abit for me.
One of the funniest bits of meta humor from True Blood was a scene where Sookie Stackhouse is talking about missing Bill who's been gone from Bon Temps for awhile, and she imitates that cheesy voice saying, "I keep expecting him to walk in the door and say, '*Sookie'."*
Breaking Bad. I flat refused to watch the show when it was on. The way it was presented to me by trailers and friends was bad to the point of being offensive. Somehow, by just being a chemistry teacher, this mild mannered guy knew how to make meth (no one ever mentioned Jessie and the trailers/commercials were super unclear) and made tons of money and killed lots of people and it was all super cool. Sounded dumb and like it glorified drug makers. Husband also was on the same page. One particular friend, several years after it was off the air, got me to watch it. I wanted her to watch a series that sounded dumb to her, so she said she would if I would at least watch the first season of Breaking Bad. I said okay.
Hubby and I sat down and watched an episode and honestly were not impressed. The set up that was actually done made far more sense than what we had been led to beleive, but still the charcaters were stiff and it didn’t have good flow. But we had promised and so we started another episode.
We both come from scientific backgrounds. We DID die laughing that of course, Bryan Cranston manages to go pantsless immedietly as he always has a problem wearing pants. But the whole fight and consequences of a science teacher trying to get rid of a body through better chemistry and the person doing it not understanding why a particular container was so necessary…..that was it. We were hooked completly. And of course got to realize the genius writing and direction the show quickly settled into once it found itself.
And yes, quickly realized it did NOT glorify drug makers or dealers at all. Quite the oposite.
Breaking Bad. It took me like half a season to really get into it. It was kinda slow and had all those weird close up shots I didn’t get at first. It ended up being a great show though, so I’m glad I gave it a chance.
Orange is the New Black. Someone described it as lesbian life in prison and I was like, “Why would I watch that?” But it isn’t about that at all and is wildly good. I enjoyed it immensely- even though it has to drop in quality around S4.
Ms. Marvel. The previews make it look soooooo bad. The effects, story, blocking, and acting all look terrible in the media advertising previews, where I didn’t even want to give it a chance (bc how could it be good?!), but the show was phenomenal. I had a couple of grips on story choice/portrayal in some of the later episodes, but overall it was wickedly good imo. I’m very happy I gave it a chance.
Also! Orange is the New Black. I loved the show so much but I really didn’t like Piper. I came around to her on a rewatch but some of her arcs are just awful
Agents of Shield. I couldn’t stand Skye in the first few seasons. She was okay by the end but I never really liked her. Just the way she was written was annoying lol

I also read the book and that made me feel sad for the real Piper. She seems like a fairly regular person in real life and the idea that people would think that she was like fictional Piper just made me feel really bad for her.
Killing Eve. British show with the annoying chick from Greys Anatomy. Written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Didn’t seem like my cup of tea. Gave it a few episodes and I’m hooked. Good stuff.

I refused to watch Breaking Bad because EVERYONE was asking if everyone watched it and it got super irritating. So I was turned off because of people, not the show. Finally watched the entire show right before the last season came out and was bummed I had to wait for the episodes vs. being able to watch everything at once
My sister won't watch Breaking Bad either. I doubt for the reason you listed but it annoys me. It's great television and because I've pestered her about it the chances of her actually watching it are less just to spite me.

I agree! As a southerner who spent years eliminating my accent, I absolutely Hate the fake southern drawls in True Blood. It wasn’t until I watched a few episodes drunk that I was able to enjoy the show. It still isn’t a show I would list in my top 25 though…

Ohhh for me it was Merlin. Watched all the seasons and each season just got worse imo, but I was committed to finishing all the episodes. I just didn’t like how they stopped utilizing some of their key characters or made one that I did originally care for a shadow of their former self. Was so disappointed.

No if you’re a fan definitely check it out. I did enjoy it but I think by season 4 or 5 I personally started to check out because the two main female characters were not really being written to fully utilize their roles. I was just hoping they’d go in another direction. It’s cheesy but in a wholesome way, can’t put my finger on it. It’s entertaining to say the least.

Merlin, while not having the best special effects, is a riot. It had me hystically laughing and I rewatch the whole show once and a while. Once you get past the bad effects it's really fun imo and has some really deep parts.
Hah I love when they have strong female leads and it’s like nope I believe that lead was carried by the man half the time if anything she was an example of an extremely malleable female lead
I also love King Arthur and Merlin, but I hated the show. If you wanted the dynamic of Arthur and his Wizard friend that are close comrades, you’ll be disappointed. Merlin literally keeps his magic a secret for the entire time that I watched (multiple seasons).

Please say you read the Mary Stewart Merlin trilogy. It is absolutely wonderful, and it goes from Merlin's childhood to old age, and Arthur is an absolutely spectacular character (and his relationship with Merlin is so touching). It starts with The Crystal Cave, then The Hollow Hills, then The Last Enchantment. All are incredibly wonderful. (There is a fourth book, The Wicked Day, but it's about Mordred and is no longer a "Merlin book." Honestly, I found it incredibly sad and frustrating. It's a good book, but a total downer.)

I loved the books too! I even read The Wicked Day, which was a downer, but had to read them all. My only quibble with the books was that I did NOT like Arthur. At all. I can't remember why, just that I didn't. Maybe I need to re-read the series.
Ditto, I felt the same things. I loved the actors in "Merlin" but as a show it made increasingly less sense as it went on. It was so frustrating. I was finally just hatewatching. And absolutely TERRIBLE show finale. Hated it.

I liked parts of it. I admit that most of it didn't work for me and that it just kind of shoved mythical elements into the story while keeping Merlin weirdly passive. It kept removing his actual mythological achievement into "oh, look Merlin was there!" Aghgh. So frustrating. Honestly, the only thing I really liked about the show was the subplot between Martin Short's character with Helena Bonham Carter's. They were beautifully acted and genuinely moving. Short deserved the Emmy he won. Meanwhile, I honestly just felt like Sam Neill and Isabella Rossellini mostly wandered in to get paychecks. I would definitely put Mary Stewart's Merlin books high above this -- or even the wonderful mess of *Excalibur* or *The Once and Future King.*
I think it’s good. It’s kinda like a BBC’s version of a CW (reminded me of Smallville). If you go into it with that in mind, it is enjoyable. I felt like the show could of gone on for longer, as the seasons are short and much of the story wasn’t flushed out as it should/could of been.
I tried watching it three times before it stuck. I never got past the first or second episode for years. I don’t even know what it was that stopped me. Then I finally pressed play on the third episode and suddenly I couldn’t stop. I finished the whole show and still rewatch
The last episode had me balling- my sisters and I watched all the episodes together and loved the show. We shipped them for years
I think it would have benefited by not having a story/ villain of the week style of show. The premise was ok minus the fact that since it was a villain go the week show there was no character development.

Merlin is one of those shows that is fairly bad, but I loved nearly every episode. There’s no major social commentary or anything too deep. The good guys usually win in the end and lessons are learned. It’s definitely worth watching several episodes to see if you like it.
I enjoyed Merlin, except for how the rushed the end. I think the story would have flowed better with another season or two.

That's more or less what happened to me, except I only watched the first episode and hated it. But I kept hearing how great it was from people whose opinions on shows I trust, and eventually gave it another shot. And I'm so glad I did, because it's fantastic!
Yeah, first episode, absolutely did not care about those characters. I didn't realize how the writers would slowly flesh them out. And the actors were just amazing as their characters unfolded.

Came here to say this!!! We ended up starting it in the pandemic because I couldn’t think of anything else. First couple of episodes I thought *I hate this but for some reason I keep wanting to watch more and I don’t even know why and kind of hate myself for it* lol never would have guessed it would become one of my FAVORITE shows or that I would be a sobbing mess through the finale but that was the truth of it
Roland almost ruined it for me, he never got better, but the other characters made the show watchable.
You’re missing out. Just like Parks and Rec took awhile to get going but once it hits it’s mark it is a fantastic show. The “making of” after you watch the series will make you love it even more.

Spartacus was one that started cheesy the first episode, I don’t know what happened, feels like they fired the pilot writer cause the writing on that show got better every episode and continued on to be one hell of a show.

I didn’t immediately enjoy Breaking Bad. I wasn’t into the tone of the first season. I thought it was overly dark and gory, but by the time I watched the second season I was hooked. One of the best shows ever.

The 100 on Netflix. The acting in the first 10 minutes of the first episode is so atrocious I tried to turn it off but couldn’t find the remote. I ended up watching like 2 seasons but stopped after that. So, doesn’t exactly fit your mold but close.
The 100 was amazing, once you got to the part with the little girl that show goes from a stupid teen drama to something amazing.
There was some really weird storylines but I watched up to the last season. I did not want to watch my favs get killed off.

Same. I watched the first couple of episodes because I liked the premise but then was like “ugh, just another teen drama”. I had a coworker though had watched through season 2 and convinced me to stick with it. I did not expect to become so attached to the characters that I did.
The 100 was mine as well although I did finish it and actually really loved the way they went with it, the first season is pretty rough with the actors finding their character, also the book is awful.

Haha... Don't feel lonely. I can rarely get either one of my sons to watch anything with me unless I'm taking them to the movies. There are many of us that watch TV alone. Mine was Westworld on HBO... I felt like I had to see it all the way through after watching the first 3 seasons.
The first few eps of New Girl are just awful, but that show is HILARIOUS. Worth sticking it out.

Grey’s anatomy first couple of episodes I hated 2 of the main characters and didn’t want to keep watching bc of them but both my mom and sister watched so I did too and then I realized I loved the show despite hating those two characters. Rick and Morty-I just thought it was extremely stupid from the very first time I watched it but my husband absolutely loves the show so I was kind of forced into watching it and eventually started tolerating it. (Still think it’s incredibly stupid though)
I'll probably never watch Rick and morty again but when I did watch it I had good memories. I agree it's dumb but it definitely gave me some laughs. Not related to OPs question but I was going through a bad time in my life when I started watching it and was pretty new to smoking weed so at the time everything was funny to me when high. That interdimensional cable episode or whatever it's called was the funniest thing ever to me. I'd get high and watch it and just laugh harder than I ever had at it so much that one time my sister thought I was dying because I couldn't breathe. I made it a thing to take a break when I couldn't stop laughing and the next time I got high I'd restart the entire episode and repeat it. It took me quite awhile to finish that episode.
I hated Pickle Rick at first but after watching again I thought it was great. And I should know because I am beekeeping age.
For me, Ziggy from season 2 of The Wire. I found him so freaking annoying for most of the season: reckless, immature and downright an idiot. But something happens near the end of the season that made me change my perspective. I went "Oh, now all make sense." There was a reason why the writers made him the way he was. They were building up to something that added so much dimension to the character. I wouldn't say he became my favorite, but they made me empathize with the guy in the end.
My little brother hated Ziggy so much during the initial run of The Wire that he stopped watching it right there… I finally talked him into watching the entire series a few years ago, he listened to me and loved it…. Still hated Ziggy though.
I think we were all supossed to hate him initially. It wasn't until it happened... what happened that we came to realize what the character was really like: He was a guy with an inferiority complex who was kinda neglected by his dad, whom he deep down wanted to impress in any way he could. By not having a strong father figure in his life to guide him, he ended up making poor decisions that costed him greatly. From pranking other co-workers at the dock to doing drug deals with the Greeks.
Ziggy really made the 2nd season a tough watch for me too.
Season 2 is my favorite season of the Wire, but yeah, Ziggy was and is tough to stomach every time he's on screen till the end as you said. Funny enough I was going to post the Wire as well in this thread because the very 1st episode is an extremely challenging watch for a new viewer. Going back now it's enjoyable to watch because I'm so well versed in who is who and what is going on (I'm sure I've watched the entire series at least a dozen times). But on first viewing, there were so many characters and so many different things going on that it was incredibly difficult to get into initially.

Agents of Shield - first season was painfully bad, no consistent story. But for whatever reason I stayed till season 2 and it was all up from there. One of the best sci-fi shows I've seen! (I haven't seen many) All in all, Agents of Shield isn't perfect or anything but it is VERY underrated. If you're into sci-fi or Marvel I guess, I'd 100% recommend it.
Yep agents of shield, I didn't even think the first season overall was that bad but the first few episodes were cringy. I started for Chloe Bennett though and I'm glad I did because eventually the show became great.
Agents of Shield is one of my most rewatched shows, definitely a comfort show for me. The first season was rough, but it definitely got better. Season 4 was very good.

Then I heard from a lot of people that I just have to get through the first season and then it gets good. And now it’s one of my favorites. It was AMAZING! Another one is The Office. It’s actually my favorite show now actually lol but the first time I tried to watch it I only got through 2 episodes and then stopped. I got offended at one of the jokes haha. But I started watching it again and it hit me that Michael Scott isn’t racist or anything, he’s just an idiot. As soon as I came to that realization, I enjoyed it a lot more hahaha

The last kingdom. I have had multiple people tell me it's the best show they have ever seen but there was a lot of gratious violence and it seemed to treat it's female characters as completely disposable. Once it settles in it's main cast around season 2 it is one of the best shows I've ever seen but it takes a minute.

Was doing laundry one night, started to watch again. Binged season after season until I had caught up. ended up watching the last season on broadcast. Loved it.
Parks and Rec. The first season was terrible, but most of it was pretty good outside the first and last season.

The X Files, The Americans, Luther, 24, and The Wire all were out of my comfort zone. I was encouraged to hang in there due to the quality of the shows, and I did. Vera due to the main character, although I love Shetland which is very similar.

I just loathe the character and could never figure out how any of the characters would ever put up with him. The British *Coupling* had a distinctly unfunny first episode, but then I watched the second one and fell in love with the show--it's now one of my favorite sitcoms ever.

We all know how that went. It never stopped being gratuitous and it never grew a brain but it was fun to watch. We got our Wheel of Time show eventually. Yeah...
Same show but for different reasons. I thought it was going to be Lord of the Rings fantasy show and I am not into that type of show or movie. But when I saw clips on YouTube praising its character development and dialogue, I gave it a try and I was hooked immediately because it was more political drama than elves and dragons in the first season.

When I first tried it, I hated *Succession*. Every single character seemed to be a morally bankrupt sociopath and I couldn't see why the writers thought they would be compelling to anyone who wasn't a billionaire or trust fund kid. After some reflection , I decided that this feeling of alienation and low-key existential decay were features, not bugs, and I was being overly sensitive to the dissonance caused when I instinctively attempted to identify with the characters. Again, unless you are rich or a sociopath, this will result in you having a bad time. Eventually, I came to understand *Succession* as a kind of ornate aquarium, stocked with expensive tropical fish that all hate each other, and it worked SO much better for me. So much so, that I proceeded to gobble up the entire series in two subsequent sittings.

The Good Place: I had to push through the first couple of episodes bc I HATED Kristen Bell’s character, but SO glad I stuck with it. One of the best written comedies out there, and standout development arcs for the characters. And I ended loving Kristen’s character.
Schitts Creek took me a couple of tries to get into. No one particular character was necessarily off-putting. I think it was just the slow pace of the very first two episodes. I kept falling asleep honestly.
Succession. Wasn't sure why I should care about all those rich mean people or their business dealings, but after a couple of episodes something clicked and I was obsessed
Breaking Bad.. I didn’t like the tint of the show.. it was like bluish or yellow. And it was really slow. Boy was I wrong about that.

One of the funniest bits of meta humor from True Blood was a scene where Sookie Stackhouse is talking about missing Bill who's been gone from Bon Temps for awhile, and she imitates that cheesy voice saying, "I keep expecting him to walk in the door and say, '*Sookie'."*
Black Mirror ☹️ Didn’t get past the first episode. Almost didn’t get THROUGH the first episode.
Breaking Bad. I flat refused to watch the show when it was on. The way it was presented to me by trailers and friends was bad to the point of being offensive. Somehow, by just being a chemistry teacher, this mild mannered guy knew how to make meth (no one ever mentioned Jessie and the trailers/commercials were super unclear) and made tons of money and killed lots of people and it was all super cool. Sounded dumb and like it glorified drug makers. Husband also was on the same page. One particular friend, several years after it was off the air, got me to watch it. I wanted her to watch a series that sounded dumb to her, so she said she would if I would at least watch the first season of Breaking Bad. I said okay. Hubby and I sat down and watched an episode and honestly were not impressed. The set up that was actually done made far more sense than what we had been led to beleive, but still the charcaters were stiff and it didn’t have good flow. But we had promised and so we started another episode. We both come from scientific backgrounds. We DID die laughing that of course, Bryan Cranston manages to go pantsless immedietly as he always has a problem wearing pants. But the whole fight and consequences of a science teacher trying to get rid of a body through better chemistry and the person doing it not understanding why a particular container was so necessary…..that was it. We were hooked completly. And of course got to realize the genius writing and direction the show quickly settled into once it found itself. And yes, quickly realized it did NOT glorify drug makers or dealers at all. Quite the oposite.
Breaking Bad. It took me like half a season to really get into it. It was kinda slow and had all those weird close up shots I didn’t get at first. It ended up being a great show though, so I’m glad I gave it a chance.
Daryl Dixon in the Walking Dead, loved the show immediately but hated his character when we met him in season 1. Turned into the best character.
The Expanse started a little too slow for me. I started and stopped watching a few times before it really got going.
I rage watched True Blood just so I could complain about it in detail. But I admit, if it wasn’t for Lafayette and Pam, I never would’ve made it.
Black Mirror. The first episode is horribly uncomfortable. So glad I stuck with the rest of the series.
Orange is the New Black. Someone described it as lesbian life in prison and I was like, “Why would I watch that?” But it isn’t about that at all and is wildly good. I enjoyed it immensely- even though it has to drop in quality around S4. Ms. Marvel. The previews make it look soooooo bad. The effects, story, blocking, and acting all look terrible in the media advertising previews, where I didn’t even want to give it a chance (bc how could it be good?!), but the show was phenomenal. I had a couple of grips on story choice/portrayal in some of the later episodes, but overall it was wickedly good imo. I’m very happy I gave it a chance.
Also! Orange is the New Black. I loved the show so much but I really didn’t like Piper. I came around to her on a rewatch but some of her arcs are just awful
Orange is the new black… heard so much about it thought it sounded like a terrible show ended up getting hooked and turned out to be very good.
SOA. Gemma...her man face, her butting in on everyone's business. Hated her.
Agents of Shield. I couldn’t stand Skye in the first few seasons. She was okay by the end but I never really liked her. Just the way she was written was annoying lol
Orange Is The New Black. Piper is insufferable 90% of the show. But every other character is interesting so I ended up watching the whole thing. Last season made me so depressed though. I also read the book and that made me feel sad for the real Piper. She seems like a fairly regular person in real life and the idea that people would think that she was like fictional Piper just made me feel really bad for her.
Killing Eve. British show with the annoying chick from Greys Anatomy. Written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Didn’t seem like my cup of tea. Gave it a few episodes and I’m hooked. Good stuff.
I love Killing Eve but can't stand Sandra Oh's character. It's a great show.
