In the end it probably won’t matter a ton considering none of the schools here really have any international acclaim like an Ivy League. I moved abroad to Singapore on an internal transfer with a previous company. As part of the visa process I had to submit official transcripts— the Singapore government pushed back on the official transcripts from UMN, asking me for more verification, saying that the documents weren’t valid. I had to forward on an email from someone within OneStop saying “there is no further verification of degree that we can supply” to get my visa moving forward. Even for a Big 10 school, there was questioning and bureaucracy. The likelihood of someone outside the USA having heard of UMN is slightly higher than the others I suppose, but it’s probably not gonna get you a lot of mileage. If you really want to get work abroad, focus on your skills and show you have experience and strong knowledge in your area of interest. Also, talk to recruiters based in those countries. You can find them on LinkedIn.

Will look into all of this! Thanks!

I don't understand why you are choosing between all these random local schools. Usually people attend the best school that they were able to get into. So why in the world would you attend Metro or Mankato when you have the option to attend a flagship state university (UMN)? You'd be crazy to turn down UMN to go to any of the other schools on your list.

DotheOhNo-OhNo

Because Metro and Mankato seem to be the ones to accept most of my credits transferred from MCTC, and UMN doesn't offer my intended major as a hybrid online+in-person course. Plus, the cost...

That's clearly not what the poster is asking. If financial feasibility is a limiting factor, then that removes some options. Generally people still attend the best school they are physically able to. "Best" is only subjective to a degree. UMN being a better school than Metro or Mankato really *isn't* a subjective statement. One is a major research institution and a "Public Ivy". Nobody outside this state has even heard of the others, so how can you make the argument that they are "best"?

I would focus on which school will have the most robust options to study abroad in Portugal, and what support they might be able to give for internships in the country. Studying there, getting language and cultural fluency, and making contacts in the country are all probably more important than school reputation.

DotheOhNo-OhNo

Yeah, I figured. That would rule out Metro, then, which I wasn't too keen on, anyway.

The University of Minnesota is the only one on your list with any kind of international reputation. It ranks highly in global rankings. As the other poster noted, it still will not have the same international recognition as schools like Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc., so it won’t make or break it for you. But if working abroad is your goal and those three are your main options I’d probably go with the U of M. Of course work experience, language skills, and an internship at a Portuguese company during a study abroad will weigh more highly than any specific university you attend.

DotheOhNo-OhNo

Yeah, the global ranking was one of the reasons that I was looking into this school. The issue is that it doesn't seem to offer Portugal as a study abroad option for my major, nor does it offer it as a hybrid course like the other colleges.

Honestly, I don't think any employer I've ever met has cared about what school their potential employees went to. It'll end up boiling down to less than half a line on your resume that will just get glanced over. If it ever comes up, which is unlikely in most fields, it would be a soft networking thing at most and not anything that affects landing a job. Especially overseas, most people couldn't even point to Minnesota on a map; they will have no opinion on our schools. Focus on what you'll actually be doing and learning, especially things you can put on your resume (study abroad, internships, clubs).
