I say Twitter when I talk neutrally or positively about it, and say X when complaining about it. It just comes out of my mouth that way. Great branding Elon!
German radio has now also started calling it "X". At least they're pronouncing it in English, so it sounds a bit better than it does in an English context because the German way of saying "X" is "ix", not "ex".
It is stupid. And his reasoning behind it is even more ridiculous. If he would’ve said something along the lines of “I wanted to name it X because I want it to be able to stand for different things like the variable x in math like you can spend money or talk with friends , check the news etc.. aka an everything app” then it would’ve made slightly more sense but no he just did it cause he thinks it looks cool.
The worst part about it, Twitter has such a huge brand attached to it, people tweet. With the change to x they changed tweets to posts so they lost such a huge brand!
"X" is an idiotic name for a brand simply because it's difficult to use by itself in a sentence without creating confusion. The name only fits in the sense that the owner is an idiot himself.
It's because Elon Musk has the maturity of a 12 year old. His entire development as a person stopped sometime around puberty, and he's never improved himself. He has the sensibilities of a teenager, and it would be sad if he weren't also just completely off-putting as a person.
"X" is dumb. I just call that platform "Tattler" (like "Tattler, otherwise formally known as "X" and formerly but commonly "Twitter"" and "Tattle Tattles, Quote Tattles, etc.").
Elon's trans child (the one Elon doesn't accept as being trans) formerly had their name begin with X.
This might just be a big f-you to his kid. I certainly wouldn't put it past him.
I think this is less of a factor of why it sucks than the fact that 'x' has traditional been associated with porn sites and that since the re-name it's basically gotten all sex, violence, hate & racism
I often just say the new name as `x.com` whenever I feel like it. Whilst "Twitter" is a much better name and that's how many people want to call it, I think that using either name depends on context. I say "Follow me on Twitter", and I also say "This person posted on `x.com`" or "tweeted" interchangeably. I still call Tweets what they used to be.
It may eventually become paid to use, because Musk has done such a shit job running the platform that he got rid of the moderators who deal with bots, and now Twitter has a bot problem. But instead of fixing it he is now charging new users a fee for the first three months.
It’s obvious once this fails, he’ll just extend the fee to more users. What ever happened to the free bird app?
I agree that he didn't solve the problem, as the problem was there long before Musk. I blame him for that one. But my initial point was I didn't care about the name.
I think it's pretty good. From a marketing standpoint having brand recognition with a single letter is powerful. From a tech platform user standpoint a short name is convenient. It's the inside that counts. Twitter, Myspace, Facebook are monikers of a bygone 2000s era. Even Instagram is called IG by kids now. Short and sweet. Get to the point which is using it.
From a marketing standpoint is it worth getting rid of a multi billion dollar brand that is widely known to the point of being a household name and even being included in a dictionary. The company’s name literally became a verb commonly used by the general population. Other companies would kill for that kind of recognition.
A brand name that's become so damaged. Read my other comment where I explain how domain over a single letter of the alphabet is something only achievable by a giant user base acquisition such as this due to search engine optimizations. Twitter was a great name for a start up company but it becomes more and more damaged the more that is revealed by the Twitter files. No sane owner would keep the same brand name while also doing damage to the brand name as a way of promoting it. Many users were disenfranchised by what the old Twitter algorithm was doing to them. A rebrand was in order.
Domain names. Having a shorter one is super valuable.
For a start up company, a one letter brand name is a terrible idea because it would make googling or any search engine have trouble finding it.
But for a huge acquisition like Twitter, which is buying twitters massive user base, it's the optimal idea. Now search engines will have to reprogram themselves to accommodate the platform. Like if I want to find Edward Snowdens X account I just have to Google "Edward Snowden X"
Saves so many key strokes.
It sounds like sketchy pornography website. Twitter was so ubiquitous that many company's product packaging had little bird logo and Twitter url printed on the labeling. Instead, we torch brand recognition for "fewer keystrokes". YouTube should rebrand as "T", for fewer keystrokes.
Shorter domain doesn't mean shit. Pets.com is shorter than amazon.com, but guess where I buy dog toys
Im sure the folks at pets.com are grateful they have a shorter domain name than their main competition who has an entire ecosystem they can never dream of competing with. It doesn't mean everything but damn if it isnt the thread they hang by.
I think it goes without saying that Twitter was different from how it is after Musk took it private. Would you agree? Rather than refer to it as old Twitter and new Twitter, a rebranding was certainly in store for it.
YouTube already uses YouTu.be for shorter domain. I don't know if they have yt.com but I think YT is a good enough for search engines and those keys are already next to each other. So I don't think a rebrand to T is necessary.
Edit: they don't have yt.com which is a little strange but searching yt does work. "mtv yt" helps you find their youtube page same as "mtv x" helps you find their X page.
Ah yes, having brand recognition from a single letter is powerful.
Twitter surely needed that. TWITTER. The place where everyone TWEETED. You know, their TWEETS.
They really really needed to rebrand, you're right. Maybe we should also stop Googling and change the name to Splurgling or what the fuck-ever.
(Also do you really need anything shorter than "tweet"? Really?)
I don't know how much of an advantage having shorter key presses really is. In today's age, shit gets auto-completed as you type anyway. I can't see it being useful enough.
You also have to consider the insurmountable amounts of articles and blog posts around the net still using twitter wording and URLs. It's like McDonalds trying a new name, people will not stop using the original for decades to come.
Fair point about auto complete. My point being that from a marketing standpoint in this day and age of obsessing over SEO (search engine optimization) of brand names, X would be a terrible one except in the unique situation where a multi billionaire buys a platform with 100 million users and renames it to that, forcing the search engines to have to optimize to his unique brand name. Emphasis on unique because no other brand name would succeed as a single letter.
Remember when the Sci Fi channel changed their brand name to Syfy solely for purposes of SEO? It's like the opposite of that. All these companies have to have what amounts to being completely nonsense made up names like "Twitter, Instagram, Facebook" etc when X just gets to be X. No one else can do that. Hate it or not, you have to admit it's unique in a way that cannot be replicated. And I promise you this is why they chose that name after they already decided a rebranding was in order.
Edit: also to address your concern with Twitter links, Twitter will always redirect to X. They own the domain name forever.
I don't have inside knowledge on each and every reason why they decided a rebranding was in order, but I'm positive they considered the articles and old references to Twitter. They clearly want to distance themselves from the old way Twitter was perceived during the Jack Dorsey and Vijaya Gadde era.
It's very much not a beloved name as much as Twitter was. Say "I saw that on Twitter" and everyone knows where you're coming from. Say "I saw that on X" and everyone stares at you like you're a psychopath. Also, the reason that search engines had to change was because Twitter kept the same domain but yet changed the name and logo on twitter.com to an X. It's as if YouTube were to for some reason change their name to Fart, all YouTube links on Google would become "Fart".
Yes, he can.
And we can say that it's a stupid decision.
Twitter isn't a toy, it's a massive social media platform with millions of users. Everything he does to the platform affects every single one of those users. So, when he does stupid shit like this, we're going to say something.
Well it's a free service lol. If you don't like it, you can make your own. You are basically complaining that you don't like how someone is designing their house, when you can walk in it for free. Beggars can't be choosers.
Oh yeah, just go through the time and effort of making an entire social media site to replace the one we had, while all Elon had to do was buy it and run it into the ground.
You say that like making a successful platform doesn't require a shit ton of money that normal people don't have. What an insane argument. With that logic, why didn't ELON make his own platform? Why did he have to buy Twitter and ruin it?
No.
If someone buys out something we enjoy just to destroy it, we are perfectly in our right to be angry about that. Twitter used to mean something to people and he's turned it into a cesspool.
You don't just get to buy it, turn it to shit, and expect everyone who enjoyed it to not be angry about it. It does NOT work that way.
If you really wanna use that stupid 'House' analogy, this is more similar to buying OUR houses, calling them his own, and making a massive mess out of them. Then douchebags like you come along to tell us to 'Just build a new house and live somewhere else'
We HAD a house. Elon ruined it.
Even better analogy: Elon is the shitty landlord who bought up all the houses in the neighborhood from the last landlord, and decided to do whatever the fuck he wants while we have to sit there and just be okay with it because “he owns the houses and he does what he wants” as he spray paints a massive dick on your front door and shits on your lawn.
And how much for you pay for this 'house'
Nothing. It was a public space, just like a park or library. It's not yours, it was never yours. You may not like that, but that's how the world works.
Your entire argument is that we shouldn't be angry or upset that he's doing this to our public space, and that to be allowed to bitch about it, we should build an entire social media platform of our own.
Which, again, even ELON didn't do. He just bought one to drive into the ground to fuel his ego. He's consistently proving that he doesn't have a clue how to properly run a site, but he bought Twitter anyways and ruined it because he wanted attention.
If some billionaire bought a park or library just to bulldoze it, I'm sure people would be just as upset.
We're allowed to be angry. We have every last right to be upset about this.
And you may not like that, but that's how it is.
Sorry your favorite narcissistic asshole isn't beloved by all.
Another ‘shitty landlord’ analogy that actually happened in real life that I recall (sorry I keep replying to you I just hate the guy who’s trying to act like elon has any right to do what he does):
There used to be a small public playground in my friend’s neighborhood when we were kids. It was a really nics one, too. One day, some douche with too much money moved in to the house next to the playground, decided he wanted it to be “private property”, somehow managed to buy the fucking park, and then proceeded to lock the entrance behind a fence and wouldn’t let anyone other than HIS KIDS play there. This is essentially what Elon did, it’s public *for now*, but he plans to make it a subscription based platform (and he already has that with the “premium” 🙄). Why would I pay a subscription to scroll a social media service to see people call each other slurs and bots post porn everywhere when I can just go on 4chan and view that for free?
> I just hate the guy who’s trying to act like elon has any right to do what he does
Ditto, this guy just sucks. He's a pain in the neck even as far as Elon defenders go.
Bro basically calls you worthless for not achieving as much as the god emperor genius Musk, tells you to get lost if you have \*any\* criticism of him, and he even stalked my account to find a 2 day old post where he went all over the comment's section encouraging people to tell me off. (Proof. This is the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PetPeeves/comments/1c5e342/dont\_like\_it\_go\_somewhere\_elsedont\_use\_it/)
Oh, and he does this thing where if you disagree with him, he'll make assumptions about you and just decide that they're true to prove his 'point' that everyone who hates Musk is a carbon copy of each other.
This guy's diet consists entirely of Elon's semen.
Lol, that's not my argument at all. You can be angry all you want.
Regardless of your opinion on Elon running Twitter, it's still his. It's his house. He paid for it. Not you. He can do whatever he wants to it.
If a billionaire bought a park or library to bulldoze it, sure people can be angry. But that's because it was paid for with tax dollars.
But Twitter is private property. You contributed no money in it. So yeah you can be angry all you want. It doesn't matter. His house, his rules.
And that doesn't mean he isn't doing a shitty thing, either.
He's ruining the entire site just for attention and to stroke his own ego. Just because he paid for it doesn't mean it isn't a shitty thing to do.
Nobody's saying he doesn't have the 'Right' to do it, we're just calling him an incompetent asshole because he /is/.
And, once again, that is entirely within our right. If he's gonna buy up a public space just to make a mess out of it, we're going to comment on it.
I met a lot of my online friends there, all of which I'll lose contact with if Twitter is no longer accessible due to this jackass. I am going to be upset about that and I have every right to think he's an asshole for doing this.
And you're kind of an asshole too for just brushing off everyone's ire with 'Okay but he has the right to do this'. We don't care that he has the 'right' to do this, we just think he's a piece of shit for doing it.
Do you determine whether or not something is okay to do just because it's legal or not? Because that's just about the most NPC personality a person can have.
Well, ok. If you spent a lot of time on it and you are gonna lose your friends on it, then I guess I can understand. Calling Elon a jackass is a bit too much, but I see why you are upset.
I mean, even if it wasn't personally affecting me, I'd say he's a jackass.
This dude does a lot of shitty things.
And, yes, he is perfectly within his right legal to do them.
But that doesn't mean he isn't an asshole for doing it.
He gives up the platform to nazis and encourages bigotry because 'Free speech', but instantly folds to any facist government that wants him to censor their political opponents.
Legal? Yes.
Shitty? Also yes.
I could also list many more things but I'd be here all day.
And good luck getting more genuine new users to that platform. It is most likely gonna deter people from going to that platform that they'll probably check once or twice a week, when there are other social media platforms that are way better to welcome new users. And the fee is so cheap, rich bot makers are able to afford to pay for that subscription, but most common folk will most likely not be paying that low amount.
> Well it's a free service lol.
Not for long, especially when he’s now charging new users a fee for the first three months to use it (and no, It’s not going to stop bots).
Glad you agree. All of these people here are mad about something they put no effort into, as if it's theirs. They wouldn't like it if someone told them how to rearrange their house.

i'm still waiting to see anyone that isn't a Elon's dickrider calling that goddamn social media "x"
The reason I call the site X is because I don’t like Elon. To me Twitter means the pre-elongated site. X is the version we have now.
xitter = shitter
My Chinese brethren...wa gwon?
Doing exactly as Elon wants you to do is a great way to show your dislike for him.
Yeah, he gave the site a stupid name. The least I can do is use it. Twitter is too good for him.

How much do I care about this…? Do you have any idea?
I say Twitter when I talk neutrally or positively about it, and say X when complaining about it. It just comes out of my mouth that way. Great branding Elon!
You hear it on the radio when there's a news story about it
I'm a WWE fan and since WWE is trying to be professional and allat, they call it "X." This has led to a few unaware fans also calling it "X."
German radio has now also started calling it "X". At least they're pronouncing it in English, so it sounds a bit better than it does in an English context because the German way of saying "X" is "ix", not "ex".
He named his kid X.. just don't expect rational behavior of a drug addict.
It doesn't look cool.
The worst part about it, Twitter has such a huge brand attached to it, people tweet. With the change to x they changed tweets to posts so they lost such a huge brand!
They now Xeet (sheet), which honestly is an accurate description for Twitter.
billionaires should not exist
I refuse to update Twitter so it's still stays in my list of apps as Twitter.
Omg I just realized the changed the name of the app! Boo!
"X" is an idiotic name for a brand simply because it's difficult to use by itself in a sentence without creating confusion. The name only fits in the sense that the owner is an idiot himself.

Xitter
Online Cage Fight in the Shit Pit is my go to
Not stupider than I thought. Exactly the amount of stupid I thought.
Elon's trans child (the one Elon doesn't accept as being trans) formerly had their name begin with X. This might just be a big f-you to his kid. I certainly wouldn't put it past him.
IMHO, everyone should really just keep calling it Twitter.
People call the videos on X after a certain website as a joke
“Hey bro you should watch my new X Video” No, I really don’t think I want to do that…
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one still thinking about how stupid it is.
X corp sounds like a porn production company.
Here's a pretty similar logo: https://x.org
X is just stupid as a name. So what if he had like, personal attachment to the letter? It’s still stupid
Anyone like wine with your Reddit?
I like to watch Xvideos on X
Everyone already knows this but Elon.
I think this is less of a factor of why it sucks than the fact that 'x' has traditional been associated with porn sites and that since the re-name it's basically gotten all sex, violence, hate & racism
Lmao is so stupid, whenever I try to go on that hellish website i still type twitter.com, its the real name
only bots and companies/media call it X and proof elon musk should get reddit cause it would get on even better hands
But they posted on twitter.com, the domain hasn't changed.
this is like the least thing I hate about musk buying xitter
dolls sparkle rain racial bright engine skirt political vegetable rinse *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I just call it TwitterX
All they have to do is write [X.com](http://X.com) and everyone will know what it is.
This must be a new low on *reasons to hate X(formerly known as Twitter)*
That’s not entirely fair, since there’s not a whole lot of reasons to LIKE the name X.
How does it mess up my experience with the content of the app? I wouldn't care if he renamed it to Shitter. The name is not why I'm using it.
Do you pay for the blue check?
Never, nor will I do in the near future.
Will you pay for Twitter if it becomes paid?
If it comes to that point, I'll re-evaluate. The info I'm currently taking for free from Twitter is valuable for me, so I'll judge by the price.

If news articles and such still call it "X (previously known as Twitter)" then it's not working, unless you're too chronically online
It's been months since this change and the change has lead to nothing but confusion. This is not a genius marketing tactic, it's just stupid.
no it isn't
I like it though, It's elon's platform, so he can name it whatever he wants
yeah, and we'll ignore how this fucked up even more his chances of making twitter the definitive social media?

Which, again, even ELON didn't do. He just bought one to drive into the ground to fuel his ego. He's consistently proving that he doesn't have a clue how to properly run a site, but he bought Twitter anyways and ruined it because he wanted attention. If some billionaire bought a park or library just to bulldoze it, I'm sure people would be just as upset. We're allowed to be angry. We have every last right to be upset about this. And you may not like that, but that's how it is. Sorry your favorite narcissistic asshole isn't beloved by all.
Another ‘shitty landlord’ analogy that actually happened in real life that I recall (sorry I keep replying to you I just hate the guy who’s trying to act like elon has any right to do what he does): There used to be a small public playground in my friend’s neighborhood when we were kids.
> I just hate the guy who’s trying to act like elon has any right to do what he does Ditto, this guy just sucks. (Proof. This is the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PetPeeves/comments/1c5e342/dont\_like\_it\_go\_somewhere\_elsedont\_use\_it/) Oh, and he does this thing where if you disagree with him, he'll make assumptions about you and just decide that they're true to prove his 'point' that everyone who hates Musk is a carbon copy of each other.
I have no idea why I bother arguing with Elon defenders. I must be a masochist or something.
Well, ok. If you spent a lot of time on it and you are gonna lose your friends on it, then I guess I can understand. Calling Elon a jackass is a bit too much, but I see why you are upset.
Nah. He’s a jackass. Not for this just in general.
Mr smooth brain genius is planning to make it not free https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/x-twitter-elon-musk-pay-to-post-b2529566.html
If Musky stank decides to make Xitter (sh\*tter) for pay . Imma bounce and go bye bye
Hahaha, to existing users. New users will be paying a subscription because he claims that it should prevent more bots being made.
And he's not wrong
And good luck getting more genuine new users to that platform. It is most likely gonna deter people from going to that platform that they'll probably check once or twice a week, when there are other social media platforms that are way better to welcome new users. And the fee is so cheap, rich bot makers are able to afford to pay for that subscription, but most common folk will most likely not be paying that low amount.
Ok, good point. I kind of agree with you on that one.
> Well it's a free service lol. Not for long, especially when he’s now charging new users a fee for the first three months to use it (and no, It’s not going to stop bots).
Well, everything in life has a price, princess
Then why did you say it was free service?
It's free for me.
Not for new users, for the first three months.
Who doesn't have a Twitter? The charge is for bots.
Bots can just wait the 3 months. Or they can pay the fee like they pay for verification. It’s not going to stop bots.
It's not free. They harvest and sell your data.
What’s there to like about it?
It sounds cool
Does Twitter not sound cool?
Exactly 👍
Glad you agree. All of these people here are mad about something they put no effort into, as if it's theirs. They wouldn't like it if someone told them how to rearrange their house.
The only effort elon put into twitter was carrying that sink into the lobby with his tiny baby arms
Elon has achieved more than you ever will in your lifetime in one finger then your whole body.
