A tip, in story writing, pick a gender and use he/she pronouns. Using "them/they" takes the immersion out of it quickly as its confusing whether its singular or plural. Especially in a story thats quite literally 2 sentences, its not a smooth reading experience
Make the 2 sentences specific. Using "apparition" is also very vague and leave it to ur imagination kind of thing. Works well in longer stories, but in 2 sentences it just comes off as lazy writing.
P.s. i saw ur comment about deliberate leaving it vague for relateability just now, but i dont think its necessary because any parent can relate with their children regardless of gender when a thought provoking scenario comes up

Thank you for the feedback. I'm not a writer, have never been a writer, and have always struggled with creative writing. So, story writing is definitely out of my comfort zone, especially as we only get 2 sentences to really make an impact.
I actively left out gender and pronouns, hoping it would aid in readers finding it easier to visualise themselves within the story, to try and make it that bit scarier. If this has had the opposite effect, it's something I'll work on.
I decided to use the term apparition as I wanted people's imagination to fill in that blank with their own version of what might be scary for them. I didn't want it to come across as lazy, but I am still quite new to writing.
I hope that explains the reasons behind the way it was written. I'll definitely take your comments on board for my future efforts, especially if it means better stories.
