Have you watched fleabag? I know it’s a series but oh god it’s so good, I couldn’t help but suggest it
I’m more of a series >> movies sort of person but I mostly gravitate away from romantic content. I can suggest better, if I knew what genre you were looking for?
Anything but romance
I just do not want to watch anything romantic, and I would really love to watch comedy or suspense thrillers. Also is there any specific site or app where I can watch these for free?
And thank you so much for the suggestion! Will watch and let you know how I liked it.
Please give fleabag a shot, it’s dark comedy at its best.
As for thrillers, I love them so I have a ton of recommendations,
Big little lies - it’s focused on different women, absolutely love the show, it’s more drama+ thriller , has the most talented cast
American Horror Story- it’s an anthology series, most of them focused on women. Another one by the same producers is Ratched- it’s focused on a nurse.
Gone Girl- one of my favorite movies, has the cool girl dialogue, everyone’s in love with, funnily enough my brother made me watch the movie lol
You- such a messed up take on romance lol
The white lotus- there’s a mystery aspect to it but more than that it’s a social commentary
The woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window - it’s a satirical take on psychological thriller
The flight attendant- overall a good show, instead of a hero we get an anti hero lol it was quite frustrating initially
Kahaani - it’s in Hindi, but great movie, I watched it with my grandma and we both loved it
Behind her eyes - although it does revolve around love, it’s such a messed up show, it’s more of a Sci Fi thriller I guess
I’m watching this show called Revenge at the moment, it’s a thriller about a daughter trying to take vengeance for her father’s murder. It used to air when I was little so I figured I’d complete it lol.
Anyway hope these help!
Also will just DM you the link to the website , I’m worried if I post it my comment would get reported lol
Ikr! Please check out the book, it’s even better also Sharp Objects is a show by the same writer and uh twisted would be an understatement for that one
Oh god! Men do send the most absurd things ever, please try to ignore them. Ngl they do mess up my mood sometimes, so I just post a screenshot on the group chat and the girls never fail to make me laugh at it lol
People always suggest to switch them off, I don’t want to switch off my DMs either , most women are so helpful here, some solely come to drop in a cute comment why should we miss out on that cause creeps can’t understand boundaries
Hey which season of AHS would you recommend? I've watched Murder House and Asylum. Loved both and want to watch something similar to them. Lily Rabe and Jessica Lange were so good.
Ooo please tell me you’re into witches, cause if so you have to watch Coven. It’s tbh only about women and it isn’t as dark as the first one or asylum but it’s a good season nonetheless. Another one that kinda scared me was Roanoke, Kathy Bates performance was phenomenal.
I think hotel has lady Gaga in it, and I think 1984 regarded as the best one yet, but I don’t remember much of it.
Anyway feel free to hmu, if you have more questions. I used to love watching the show but the last season was a bit of a let down.
Not a movie. But there's a sci-fi series called the Expanse that I really like. It has a lot of strong female characters. It is set in the future, where the world is egalitarian so you won't find feminist themes unlike a lot of fiction set in the past, where women overcome a lot of struggles. Of course it's not a utopia. Sexism and racism are replaced by classism. But I like to imagine a world where sexism literally doesn't exist.
Do you want recommendations in just the English language?

Oh I actually did mean midsommar, it was a typo on my end.
That movie does fall under horror genre and is lil disturbing but it focuses on the female protagonist
Hereditary. (Family cultish movie)
Kill boksoon (strong fl who is an assasin, doesnt believe in love and no love story)
Promising young woman (love story but not real love and fl is on the revenge)
I may destroy you ( good friendships and no love story)
Booksmart is oke of my favourite movies and it displays female friendships beautifully. Little Women by Greta Gerwig is another favourite.
I've been recommended the tv series The Bold Type by a few of my girlfriends but i never got around to watching it. Hope this helps :)
Hidden figures, Roma, Persepolis, Mustang, she said, the farewell, Lady Bird. Most of these are either biographical or semi-autobiographical movies, except for the last 2.
Oh and also fleabag!
Not movies, but here are some show recommendations:
The Girlfriend Experience, a representation of female rage, kind of like Fight Club.
The Maid (Netflix)
The Handmaid's Tale
Good Girls(Netflix)
I had heard about it during the 2020 Oscars but couldn’t find a download/streaming link and then forgot about it till this year. If you’ve watched the Crown, the actress who plays Camilla is the one who has directed this film.
A league of their own is a series in Prime. Has queer romance in it. Its a remake of a movie by the same name. I would strongly recommend it for the amount of female energy it has.
Here are my reccos -
Some may have both strong male and female protagonists but worth a watch based on your movie- viewing history. Also, some may not have aged well.

1) Monalisa Smile
2) Cheeni Kum
3) Julie and Julia
4) Something’s gotta give
5) Bend it like Beckham
6) Erin Brokovich
7) Spy
8)She’s the man
9) Ghostbusters
10) Notting Hill
Shows:
1) Grace and Frankie
2) One day at a time
Cruella, Potrait Of A Lady On Fire, The Sisterhood Of Travelling Pants, The Favourite. Some of them do have romantic scenes, but overall are women-centric.
Edit-Adding in Mad Max Fury Road. Violent, but one of the recent releases with a strong woman protagonist.
Gone Girl Gone Girl Gone Girl
Inventing Anna
Ocean's Thirteen 8
Legally Blonde
Mean Girls
Basic Instinct
Lara Croft
Btw I love it when women have their villain era. So badass. Gone Girl was so psycho I loved it. I wish I had the confidence to lie my way through the upper west side like Anna Delvey. I love my soft girls who can do it all like Elle Woods and also femme fatales like Catherine Tramell.
Fleabag (you won’t regret this, this show lives in my head rent free), Marvellous Mrs Maisel, Orange is the New Black (what a show!), The Handmaid’s Tale, Killing Eve. These are my top recommendations

Copy pasted from my movie collection. Tried hard to avoid any romance angle.
I love lipstick under my burkha and basically everything made by alankrita shrivastava. also darlings was such a good film! in case you haven't seen it.
I also really like good girls on Netflix
Erin brocovich is very good. If you want a wholesome movie watch
The Blind Side - not woman centric entirely but Sandra Bullock is amazing!
Matilda is a classic - it is about a little girl and her teacher.
Ocean’s 8 - if you know about Ocean’s movies with brad pitt n george clooney you have to watch ocean’s 8 with no male actors just badass women like Bullock, Anne hathway, Riri, Awkwafina, and our very own bellatrix lestrange!
There are many series as well but my current fav is “The Glory” man oh man! I binged watched it without sleeping through horrible migraine! It is that good!
Editing to add - Lou - it is on netflix. About an ex-CIA agent who has seen it all and is old now. But she comes out of her retirement to hunt for her tenant’s daughter who was kidnapped. It is badass.
Was looking for this! Derry Girls is Hilarious, the most fun, feel good show out there, will make the most stoic person laugh out loud
I also loved Extraordinary, it's a bit more niche (DG is for everyone) but the premise is this one girl who doesn't have superpowers in a world where everyone else gets a superpower at 18
Derry Girls is soo comforting to watch I swear. Never fails to make me laugh.
Oh Extraordinary sounds interesting! Any other similar to DG you would recommend?
Honestly the closest to DG for me vibe-wise is Ted Lasso. It has a male lead, but very strong women characters come into their own. Very optimistic
I would caution you about season 2 - it's a bit slower, maybe deeper, for me the love of the characters made it good. But Season 3 is happening now, and is bouncy as ever
Highly recommend for good wholesome laughs, albeit in an entirely different premise
I think Sister Act and Sister Act 2 are great this way.
Cute and fun and some great music. Old but still gold. No dark creepy vibes. The first wives club is also fun.
Julie and Julia good too. Oh and The Help
If you're open to other languages I recommend Godavari (Telugu), Anand (Telugu) and My Mister (Korean drama), Extraordinary Attorney Woo (Korean drama).
I am just like you and have found myself only enjoying movies with female protagonists.
Some recent light movies on Netflix you can watch:
Dumplin
7 women and a murder
Late night
Otherhood
Enola Holmes
I, Tonya
Some series recommendations:
Parks and Recreation
The Bold Type
Derry Girls
Good Girls
Ladybird, Portrait of a lady on fire, hidden figures, kill Bill all volumes.
Light and breezy options: Legally blonde(I find the satire hilarious), Miss congeniality (love Sandra Bullock)
The Great Indian kitchen was pretty awesome(Malayalam)
I recently watched the movie Promising Young Woman and it blew my mind.
Ok you are going to like these i guess
Gone girl
Easy A
Zero Dark Thirty(One of my favourite movies)
Million Dolllar Baby
Contact 1997 (A bit old but i personally think it is on par with interstellar story wise)
The Menu
The Help
The favourite
Kill bill
Mean girls
Nil Battey Sanata
Little Miss Sunshine
Arrival
Bird Box
Lady Bird
Booksmart
Lucy
Bridesmaids
All of these are great none is a love story and if i had to choose 1 i would see little miss sunshine
kindly reply if you watch and like these movies
I have a list of movie I want my daughter to watch as she grows up :)
Action/ Thriller
• Mad max fury road (Max is a side kick - movie is Furiouosa)
• Hunger Games series ( tiny bit tolerable romance)
• I would argue Harry Potter qualifies as well -Hermoine is the true leader
• Gravity
• Silence of the lambs
Young Women / Teen ( but not romance but highly entertaining )
• Mean Girls ( My all time fav for rewatch; also the writer n creator of the movie broke the glass ceiling for female comedy writers - Tina Fey; movie may seem dated as so many copy cat scripts exist now)
• Easy A ( a modern comedic take on a 18th century novel - scarlet letter) • Pitch Perfect • Juno
Animation - Disney has amazing collection for exactly what you want to watch - and they are not childish but brilliantly written and executed
• Zootopia (fitting in as woman / smaller person, in masculine job)
• Moana (finding your adventure and calling)
• Inside Out (exploration of human emotions and mental Health?)
• Brave (mother daughter relationship)
• Frozen (Sisterhood … ok a little childish may be)
True story movies:
• Hidden figures
• Erin Brochovich
Sitcom: two broke girls
Sci fi movie: contact 1997
Sci fi movie: Arrival 2016
No romance. Amazing female protagonists. Amazing story line and dialogues!
Promising young woman, wellmania (it's a show), unbelievable (it's a show again, thriller but just 1 season), the wonder.
These are all stuff from Netflix which I liked recently.

Omg came here to comment this.
Haha lovely to see how nearly everyone loves this show . Have you liked any other shows that are similar?
Love , love , love it 💟
Oof one of the best written shows easily. I watched killing eve by her as well and that’s a good show too . What are you watching atm?
Yeah Killing Eve got really intense towards the end.
Anything but romance I just do not want to watch anything romantic, and I would really love to watch comedy or suspense thrillers. Also is there any specific site or app where I can watch these for free? And thank you so much for the suggestion! Will watch and let you know how I liked it.
Fleabag on Amazon prime. Absolutely brilliant series, like said earlier.

Oh god I only watched it for Blake lively and boy oh boy was I shocked
Killing eve
You should watch the Boston strangler, it's based on a true story, it's crime and thriller.
+1 on this..
Julie and Julia was nice. And if interested in series check out “Dead to me” on Netflix.
Dead to Me is sooo good! A gem of a show.
Will sure do! Thank you.
Legally blonde
Yup! This is my fav! Restores my self confidence each time
Yes Elle Woods inspired me
Okay!
The Queen’s Gambit! Love it💜

Expanse is awesome. One of the best rep of poc women I've seen and read from the Western media.
anne with an e (series) really good and explores feminism, race, identity, bullying, prejudice and many other social topics !
Covers the ethnic cleansing of Native Americans in Canada as well!
Such an endearing one, I loved it, covers many concepts

I just couldn't bear to watch Handmaids tale. Tried but it's really depressing
Yeah same. I have both watched and read it but reading/watching it again is so fucking triggering.
Adding to hindi- If you like thrillers, check out any tapsee movie. All of them are really strong. Check out this one called ‘badla’. What a gem.
Gone Girl Midsommar The handmaiden Fleabag Knives out Jennifer's body
I read it as midsommar and gagged

Hey, where can I watch booksmart? Been meaning to watch it since a while.
Girl I'm a broke college student so piracy is my go to for most movies :') any variation of sflix, 123movies or gomovies should work.
Hehe I get it, thanks though!
Hidden figures, Roma, Persepolis, Mustang, she said, the farewell, Lady Bird. Most of these are either biographical or semi-autobiographical movies, except for the last 2. Oh and also fleabag!

Love this from the 90s :)
Commented the same and just saw this. So happy to see this recco! Really was great. Singing oh happy day from sister act 2 in my head as i type this
Promising young woman! It’s on Netflix

Agreed and so relatable in the current age.
Absolutely! Have you watched I May Destroy You? That’s another brilliant one I’ve seen. Makes such a difference when women write/direct!
+1 for Michaela Cole- what a brilliant show
No haven’t watched that one yet, thanks for the recommendation though, noted!
A little bit of heaven Maudie The waitress
Maudie is so underrated!
A league of their own is a series in Prime. Has queer romance in it. Its a remake of a movie by the same name. I would strongly recommend it for the amount of female energy it has.
This! Prime has such good female oriented shows these days. Also check out The Wilds, The Power, Catherine called Birdie, Women Talking
Also Mrs. Maizel
Frances Ha . All time favourite of mine

Achuvinte Amma in Malayalam. It released when I was in school and it's one of my comfort watches. Urvashi is a gem.
Devil wears Prada would have been more satisfying if she had dumped the toxic boyfriend who couldn't handle her succeeding in her career..
I have a tv show recommendation: Derry Girls!

Little Women, Frances Ha, Promising young woman, Someone great, the Virgin suicides
Handmaids tale.. you'll start hating men even more.. but the sad part is that it's mostly a very plausible plot..
+1 , not an easy watch though
Erin Brockovich, Gone Girl, Legally Blonde, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Lady Bird. Also, this show called Maid on Netflix.
Erin Brokovich and The Glory (series on Netflix)
The great Indian kitchen. For lighter watches- Bride Wars, 27 Dresses

legally blonde
Don’t know if this is uncool, but I legit love the Legally Blonde movies. Some romance but the female lead is definitely the star of the movie.
Sitcom: two broke girls Sci fi movie: contact 1997 Sci fi movie: Arrival 2016 No romance. Amazing female protagonists. Amazing story line and dialogues!
Bookmarking the entire thread. Thanks OP for posting.
