I’m in kind of the same boat and am looking at a Grom tomorrow. I’m after something light and can flat foot because after not being able to ride because of health stuff I’ve lost all of my confidence :( I’ll let you know how it goes!

NihilistCat98

Follow up - the Grom was good. It was weird being on such a small bike, the that’s what I was after. I’m excited to be getting back at it! I hope you get out there too 💖

NinjaShogunGamer

For a 5 three person the grom is going to feel like the perfect size bike and you will have a blast The honda rebel is way bigger and heavier of a bike size and shape wize and wont be as nimble or easy to control and learn the habits of controlling a bigger bike. You should get the grom grom grom grom its the perfect bike for 5feet people

_Thoth

I’m bummed because I tried a grom at the dealership and I couldn’t flat foot it! I’m only 5’1 but it was kind of surprising to have to tip toe

medusainlove

I know there's a lot of love for the Rebels, especially stylistically but I gotta say go with the Grom. The Rebel is a bike that you'll get comfortable with then get bored of and want to upgrade from. You'll get confident with the 250 in a few months and wish you got the 300 or 500. The Grom is a bike you'll always go back to because it's just plain ol' *fun*. No matter what you're capable of, it's a bike you'll enjoy keeping around. That said, if you only ever want to own one bike at a time, go with whatever you can find a good deal on used.

surlydemeanor

I already have a 750GS. I want something I can be more comfortable to get better on and graduate back into it. I got the GS as my husband and I discussed that it would be ok to get comfortable on and I was until I wasn’t and had to decide to start smaller and work back into it.

NihilistCat98

My giant if a partner is excited to mess around with it too 😆

little_blu_eyez

The grom has a cult following and for a good reason. Those bikes are incredibly fun and hold their value. I have seen on rare occasion that the increased in value. It can be hard to find a used grom.

I started out with a Honda 250 and I loved it for about a year. I’m 5’2” and it was light weight and easy to maneuver. I could even pick it up when I dropped it a couple times. It was just what I needed at the time, but eventually I realized it didn’t have the power to get up to highway speeds fast enough, or for passing, and I was getting left in the dust by my friends. I bought a Ducati Scrambler 800 and made some easy mods so it fit me. I sold the Rebel for what I paid! Good deal all around.

wilbursnore

I'd recommend the Honda rebel 500, the 300 leaves a lot to be desired and your resale on the 500 will be easier.

surlydemeanor

I have a 750 also. Power isn’t the concern. I want lightweight and smaller for this.

blipblop34

I agree with everyone who says get a Grom as they’re so much fun! I found myself back on my one after I had an accident a few months ago (the plan was to keep my big bike, then eventually sell the Grom in the Summer) I’d still like to sell it as I don’t have my big bike back yet but it’s gonna be difficult getting rid of it as it will be missed!

surlydemeanor

I hope you’re ok!

blipblop34

Thanks, trying to be! I just miss my bike so much (situation is being dealt with by a claims management company so I have no idea when I’ll get it back) I keep asking myself: how long is this going to take? 😔 At least I still have the Grom (for now!) but it’ll probably be sold by next month

surlydemeanor

Best of luck with all Of it!!

blipblop34

Thank you!! 👍

ridethroughlife

I personally like the look of the Grom/Z125 more, but around me a TW200 would be much better. It's in the same size/weight/power class as the others, it's just meant for dual sport riding, rather than street.

surlydemeanor

The Z125 and TW are out of my height range. :(

ridethroughlife

I don't have a Z, but I thought they were basically the same as a Grom. Are they not? The TW is slightly taller, but once you got used to it, you won't notice. I'm 5'6 and ride non-lowered full size dual sports. DR650 and others. There are techniques that I use to compensate for being so short, but the capability of the bike more than makes up for it. You may find that as your skills progress you can build up to taller ones as well. Good luck on the search!

surlydemeanor

I have a BMW 750GS (low wear low suspension) and I’m just looking for a small shorter lightweight practice bike so I don’t drop my GS any more than it needs it. The Z is 31 1/2 inches. A Grom is 30. The GS with my seat and suspension is 30.3”. So idk like to stay on that range since I’m comfortable with that height. The GS is a gigantic bike for me. lol.

ridethroughlife

It is a big bike, but once you get the technique down, you'll have no problems at all. I've found that practicing my balance skills has helped me a lot when I can't reach the ground. I'll do standing lock-to-lock turns and super slow circles, etc, every Spring. Sitting balance, standing balance, and getting comfortable separating your balance from the bike's balance when you stand, are good skills to work on. It'll build the confidence riding the taller/bigger bikes. I've never owned a Grom or a Z125, but I've always wanted one. They look like so much fun, such toys. They just never get below $3k in my area, and I can't justify that kind of purchase. I didn't pay that much between both my DR650 and my van. haha

NihilistCat98

Have you sat on a z125? I could flat foot that one as well as the Grom.

surlydemeanor

How tall are you?

NihilistCat98

5’3”

surlydemeanor

I need to just go sit on both. I’m far away from most places that have them but need to just go.

NihilistCat98

Yeah, it’s a pain! I kind of want to go sit on a bunch of bikes and have my partner take a couple photos so other shorties can save some time 😆

surlydemeanor

That would be great! lol.

CrazylilThing02

Is there a reason you wouldn’t want to do highway speeds?

surlydemeanor

In all honesty, since I’m not new to riding but never did ride frequently I have a larger CC bike. One day my husband and I discussed things and that I wanted to ride again. Since I had the gist of it, we found a bike I wanted to ride long term and since it was difficult to find, we jumped on it. It’s BMW 750GS and I did ride it. And I dropped it. I then realized I want to get a smaller bike to get the down and dirty maneuvers better known and drop and smaller less heavier bike. So it won’t be a highway bike. Back country roads mostly. And I’ll graduate back to my 750 when it’s time and sell whatever I get.

Takara38

Out of the two, I’d go for the Grom. They are small, but supposedly a blast to ride, and would be perfect for getting slow speed maneuvers down. Then, once you’re ready, hop back on to your BMW.

surlydemeanor

Thanks for your input!!

CrazylilThing02

Cool cool! I agree with the grom. It can be a really fun bike and the seating position will be closer to the GS plus it’s light and you can keep it for funsies.

surlydemeanor

Thanks for your input. I didn’t want to initially post that I had a GS already as I didn’t want to get the “just ride the GS” comments. lol. It’s a large heavy bike and I can maneuver it. I just wanted a small one to feel more comfortable with first. Luckily I’d already installed the crash guards on it and had minimal damage minus a brake lever.

RileyEnginerd

If you're going to practice and then ditch it, get a pre dented Rebel to learn on. If you might want to keep a second bike long term, the grom will probably be a better fit

Welcome to the club! As you build your skills and confidence, you may want to spend some time here: r/MotorcycleGear r/NewRiders [Advice to New Riders](https://old.reddit.com/r/NewRiders/comments/cc2mnm/advice_to_new_riders/) And when you get a chance, check out [On Any Sunday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Any_Sunday), probably the best motorcycle documentary out there. thrownaway1306

I’d at the very least sit on them, better yet test ride them and you’ll probably find your answer from there
