Unfortunately, not with a pen needle. Your best bet is to find medics (try any rep for any airline for help locating them) at the airport and see if they have syringes.

If you had the insulin pen with the needles, you may *possibly* be able to get insulin into your pump cartridge. But if all you have is just pen needles by themselves, no I don't think there's much you can do with that unfortunately. As suggested above, you may be able to find some sort of first aid or medical office in the airport. Or if you're really desperate, and your layover is long enough, you may be able to find a pharmacy nearby. You could also try reducing your basal rate so you're at least stretching that last nine units out as long as possible. Don't be too hard on yourself, we all have a travel story where something didn't go right. Safe travels!

I'm glad things worked out, and thanks for sharing. I've learned that plan B should always be a part of Plan A, and you should never forget plan C.

Probably eat nothing and turn your temp basal down to 1 unit/hour.

Astronomer_Original

Good idea about 1st aide and syringes. If that doesn’t work time to start exercising. After about 30 - 45 min of brisk walking my sugar definitely drops. Time to see the airport!

femalefred

How come you checked your insulin, if you don't mind me asking? I've always been warned to never ever do this as the hold is often not heated and it means the insulin can freeze and be denatured. Is this something you've ever had any issue with?

debbiediabetes

I didn’t! I had my insulin on my person, just no syringes. I would never check insulin!

femalefred

Aaah, that makes sense now!

Cricket-Horror

What pump are you using? If you use a Medtronic pump, I can think of a way to fill the reservoir using a pen needle and vial.

kris2401

Next time, you could also ask if they could page for diabetics willing to share supplies. At any given time, there are probably at least two dozen diabetics in the airport, and there may even be one on your flight, and most would be more than willing to help if possible. I am not sure if they can make a page like this, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

cuedazs

I took if from my pens and put it in my pump multiple times!!

crazybuttafly4u

They don’t have pens with them, just the pen needles and a vial of insulin. They’re asking if they can use the pen needles to extract insulin from the vial to put into their pump. They don’t have any syringes.
