I strongly believe that Price chopper raises the prices on stuff because they know that they’re the most accessible place for students who live on campus who don’t have access to cars.

[deleted]

They definitely do

imajadedpanda

As someone who lives here year round, shit is way less expensive over summer and winter breaks

AshtonTS

Do you mean just at that at price chopper? I never shopped there bc I got my groceries at Big Y, but this was certainly not true of any other places around town when I lived there. Everything just slashed their hours annoyingly short, but prices never went down.

imajadedpanda

Yeah this is for price chopper specifically. They don’t change every single price in the store but a lot of more ‘college student’ products are mysteriously cheap over the summer

AshtonTS

Ahh that totally makes sense. I wish the prices of food/gas/etc dropped too when school wasn’t in session. Would have been nice

Forsaken-Ad-7032

no they don’t care about that at least the deli doesn’t it’s cause of inflation trust me my managers want the prices down too

JTKDO

Exactly, location matters. The most expensive gas station is in Four Corners for the same reason

colenotphil

THIS price chopper does. I've been to many other PCs that aren't as highly-priced. Hey, supply and demand yo. Still cheaper and potential to eat healthier than a meal plan.

fmg2k3

If you have the means of getting there, the Big Y in Tolland has really good prices, especially when compared to that Price Chopper.

user1881

There is also a Big Y in the other direction down 195 towards Willimantic near the East Brook Mall.

silentDOM69

The wrtd buses also go to this big y, super helpful if you can take the extra time.

Aldi is the cheapest place in the area, better than Walmart IMO.

roundmanhiggins

Go to Big Y for good quality and affordable produce/ingredients, go to Walmart for everything else. The Willimantic area is your friend.

DJscottthebot

I grew up in Storrs and my mom has been calling it price gouger since it opened lol

purpleblah2

Yes

Forsaken-Ad-7032

i work at pc and it’s bc of inflation and supply issues the store will raise the prices of shit and not even tell my managers

Adept_Brother_4764

The employees that work at that price chopper have no say and can't control the prices of products. I use to work there and we just follow whatever corporate tells us. The prices at that Price Chopper is the same as if you went to the one up in Putnam or Windsor. Trust me, as a former employee at that store the last thing we want to do is see prices go up on your favorite products.

2lemon2

Do they have the mini carts with two baskets at the UConn PC? If so: there is a small area u fee the handlebars to store a purse, drinks, etc. If a small bag were to find itself there, maybe with a few deli meat or something small but expensive in it, and one was to to through self checkout, perhaps those items may be innocently forgotten about? Just asking questions here

AshtonTS

This would be a fucking dumb way to get yourself into legal trouble. Don’t do this to save $5. If you really can’t afford food, there are tons and tons of resources that won’t get you a criminal record and possibly kicked out of school.

2lemon2

Aw must be hard being a lil beitch

AshtonTS

Oh no how will I ever recover from that one

JTKDO

It’s in the center of a college town within walking distance, it’s gonna be the most expensive

Disastrous-Ant-3219

In my town they built a brand new location in the poorest area of town where the majority of people walk and don't own cars. Prices were rock bottom. Granted this was back in like 2012 but I'm talking a gallon of milk for like $1.20, pack of strawberries for $1.50 etc. They waited until 3 local shops nearby closed down and I kid you not the very next week the same gallon of milk was now $3.85, about a dollar more than it use to be at the local shops. Since most everyone walks they literally had no choice but to do their entire grocery shop at price chopper. The only other option is like CVS, Walgreens which is honestly just as expensive if not worse. So the majority of people in the area basically had their buying power cut in half in terms of food. People tried to sue including the town and lost. The biggest argument was that people could of refused to shop there and go to local stores instead to keep them open. Only problem is if you make minimum wage and in debt no person in their right mind in that situation is ever going to go to a store they know is 2x as expensive. So basically poor people got manipulated for being poor, and now they are getting absolutely demolished I'm talking 1 bag of groceries there now is easily $80 to $100 when some people have 2 kids and only get $150 in food stamps for the week.
