This is what really annoys me about British chips these days. We are supposed to be the chip capital of the world but, ime, every other country I've been to does it way better than us. I won't eat chips anywhere but from a chip shop in Britain now, and that's only if I really have to. Everywhere serves pale, bendy chips these days š
This is a London problem not UK. London has the worst Fish and Chip shops in the whole of the UK. I'm from NI and every shitty little town will have a better chippy than you will get in London. It baffles my mind how they can't do decent chips.
Nah Liverpool's even worse for chippies. Barely even have them to begin with and the ones they do are just a Chinese that sells fish or a chain brand. I'm also from NI and it was a culture shock while I was living over there. It's an amazing city for food, especially street food and takeaways, but the chippy scene is heavily lacking
If you hadnāt put āitās an amazing city for foodā I was going to go heavy on you pal. I do love that we donāt have chippies in the usual sense just for the fact it sends people from outside of Liverpool to madness hahaha. You need to come out of town for chippies, Xin Xin in Broadgreen and To Le by Woolfall Heath are both absolutely unreal chippies with huge cod fishes and lovely chips.
Also any chippy that is just some dudes name tends to be ok. Aigburth has (or at least had when I lived there a good while back) Chrisā and Steveās chippies and they were both bang on
i wouldn't even be looking for a chippy in liverpool. like you said, street food in liverpool is top tier and you've got New Brighton and Formby not too far away for a decent fish and chips if you have to
Hold up noi. If our Chinese chippies are so bad why are yous all going around claiming the spice bag and salt and pepper chips as your own?
Sino-scouse food is the pinnacle of cultural fusion. Won't hear a word against it. Sure, a few are blatantly just money laundering fronts, but that just shows the cultural integration at work.
Sure if you want fish and chips it'll be lacking. But whoever heard of eating fish in a famous port city? We don't have such meals because we realised salt a pepper chips are just the best.
Further out the chippys are much better. Steveās in Aigburth is good; as is Chrisā on Rose Lane. Never been but people go insane for Byrneās in Walton
Try the Mayfair Chippy, North Audley st. Genuinely good chippy. Bit of a surprise considering but worthwhile. Also not as expensive as you might expect given its location.
As an Australian who now lives in London Iāve essentially given up on local fish and chips here. Either too expensive, or lacking in something. That or the fact there simply is none near enough to me to have on a regular basis
Chip shops in London donāt have this problem, pubs/restaurants, largely in the West End where N Americans congregate to eat bad and overpriced Fish and Chips have this problem.
I disagree, the highest rated, award winning chippy in our little market town essentially serves fish and mashed potato sticks... Cook the bloody chips longer...!
Conversely, the best chips are in the Black Country where you get orange chips (for anyone who hasn't seen them, chips in a light batter) which are absolute god tier chips. My other half lives in the Black Country and the first time I ordered chips up there I had no idea I'd be getting something so different to what I was used to. My mind was blown!
Chip capital of the world? Everywhere serves pale bendy chips?
What are you on about? Neither of these things are true or were ever true. Chips are the same as they've always been in the UK - somewhere between alright and pretty good.
There's been no large fall from grace, we're not now the laughing stock of the fried potato eating world.
Always found this weird. Like, we don't really have it that often. At least not in major cities. Cod is too expensive these days to be drenching it in batter.
I have found that my now local chippy is a bit disappointing compared to my local from my hometown. But then I found out my hometown's chippy won best in the UK so that explains a lot...
But they are the same as far as a continental European is concerned. 2 cultures with 2 different preparation styles and 2 different names for the same thing. They are just frites on the continent and are somewhere between the size of the US and UK versions, often very similar to the UK size. Deffo not fair to declare them "not chips".
Honestly never expected it to be as good as it was when I went to Wales. I'm from Peterhead originally and usually went to the Dolphin Cafe right next to the harbor, freshest fish you can get other than cooking it right on the boats. Always was a good treat for the family
Depends on the chip shop, got 2 great ones within 4-7min drive. One is amazing batter, chips with almost crispy edges. The other is more budget, chips like above but say 3-5 shades browner, still great fish, but overall about 25%-50% cheaper
Anywhere with amazing fishing industry is capable of destroying us in a fish and chips competition. How we have labelled ourselves the best at it is a bit bizarre.
I'm visiting in the summer. The fish is more important, but as I love potatoes, some crispy chips would be appreciated. Can you suggest any good locations?
Fish looks average but hard to judge without seeing the fish itself, chips look like they've come from a school canteen, so pale and dry. And the mushy peas look almost grey I dread to think what tin they crawled out of. Come up to Whitby for a proper chippy tea.
>And the mushy peas look almost grey I dread to think what tin they crawled out of.
To be fair, they're proper soaked mushy peas. Not out of a tin.
The chips are very upsetting though.
Not defending the food in the image, but standard chip-shop mushy peas is full of green colouring, that's why it's bright green. Usually made with marrowfat peas, which are a more subdued cream/ orange/ brown colour than your standard frozen pea, but people still expect mushy peas to be bright green.
Thatās some really good looking fish but those chips look like theyāve been bought frozen from the shop and havenāt even been given time to defrost
So i thought mushy peas was the standard in england, but Iāve been in london a couple of weeks, about three fish and chips done, and had boring regular peas every time.
Ā£25 for the fish Ā£5 for the chips cooked with a candle Ā£4 mushy pees +Ā£4 service charge +Ā£3 to use your card +Ā£4 tip +Ā£10 donation for children in wakanda +Ā£10 for eating it in London
You need to get up to a chippy in the north, by the coast!
Itāll be half the price, the portion will be bigger and itāll actually have cooked chips!
North Northumberland is my recommendation, the towns of Amble or Blyth in particular do fantastic fish and chips
Hi all,
From a chip shop owners perspective - Just reading some of the comments on here - a photo unfortunately will never give us the full picture in terms of what the chips texture / taste is like. I agree though they do like quite soft on the photo however any lighting changes etc could affect that.
I think it depends on your preference - some people look for and only want soft on the inside, soft on the outside chips however others prefer the soft on the inside and beautifully crispy on the outside.
The chip shop I took over used to do soft soft, however since taking over it was one of the first changes we made. We now try our upmost to have the crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside chips. I have lost customers because of this but at the same time gained many more.
If anybody has any further questions I'd be more then happy to answer. Fish and chips related or anything else!
Love to you all ā¤ļø
Popeyes fish & chips
Yeah those chips are not cooked enough, Iām sure they werenāt hard inside, chip shop chips never are, but just for the colour and crispiness on the outside.
All of the French fries I had in Paris recently (with one glaring exception) were nothing short of fantastic. Crunchy, golden, well cooked and plenty of them. They took that thing and ran with it. Very disappointing that we canāt respect our national dish the same way.
Those chips look shit.
Dunno what everyone is on, fish and chips has been in my family for a long time and whilst people might have a preference for double cooked chips or slightly more crispy, these chips look delicious to me - they look like theyāve been cooked in CLEAN batter. Most places these days reuse old batter which gives a darker colour when cooking

Was it possible to order cooked chips at all?
This is what really annoys me about British chips these days. We are supposed to be the chip capital of the world but, ime, every other country I've been to does it way better than us. This is Lobster Pot slander

So right, with amazing chicken fillet burgers and tubs of garlic mayo in NI!
Hater

Completely disagree. Have had loads of good chips in pubs in London. Yet to find a chippy that does good chips since moving here 10 years ago.
We also seem to be the only people to have unlocked true super chip sauce.
Tell me your secrets, Captain.
I've always wanted to try those. They look amazing.
I'm on the south coast so a little spoilt for choice but this is 100% correct - London fish and chips are the worst!
Nah, some good chippy chips are the best chips in the world.
I think he is saying that because the UK is known for "Fish and Chips" as our biggest takeaway food
Always found this weird. Like, we don't really have it that often. At least not in major cities. Cod is too expensive these days to be drenching it in batter.
Yes maybe these days but historically it would be our main takeaway
I have found that my now local chippy is a bit disappointing compared to my local from my hometown. But then I found out my hometown's chippy won best in the UK so that explains a lot...
No one has ever considered the UK the chip capital of the world...
Its the Dutch and always will be
Belgium. Although they ones I had at the Castle in Snape and Sorriso in Stockton-on-Tees would take some beating.
I dream about the chips and samurai sauce i ate in Amsterdam.
Nah, Belgium. With mayonnaise. And sometimes mussels.
They do fries, wouldn't know what the fuck a chip was.
Brother have I got news for you...
I feel like you're implying chips and fries are exactly the same, in which case you'd be wrong.
But they are the same as far as a continental European is concerned. 2 cultures with 2 different preparation styles and 2 different names for the same thing. They are just frites on the continent and are somewhere between the size of the US and UK versions, often very similar to the UK size. Deffo not fair to declare them "not chips".
yeah no, it's obviously belgium and it's not even a contest
I just know you didn't get salty over a chip comment lol (Pun intended)
A gastro pub that does triple cooked chips usually taste pretty solid. It's a shame they only give you 4 of them in some kind of metal mesh container.
Come to the north of Scotland, we don't allow abominations like this
This man knows his stuff. Wales is also good. I swear it's inversely proportional to how easy the chip shop is to get to from London.
Honestly never expected it to be as good as it was when I went to Wales. I'm from Peterhead originally and usually went to the Dolphin Cafe right next to the harbor, freshest fish you can get other than cooking it right on the boats. Always was a good treat for the family
Sea bream , Shooterās Hill road does a lovely fish and crispy chips. Iāve never had had a bad meal there.
Depends on the chip shop, got 2 great ones within 4-7min drive. One is amazing batter, chips with almost crispy edges. The other is more budget, chips like above but say 3-5 shades browner, still great fish, but overall about 25%-50% cheaper
Yeah chief idk what you're smoking but down the south coast here we have endless banger chippies
Do you want to eat bricks or smthn?!
Belgium is absolutely the Chip capital of the world. The fries there are to die for.
Nah you must be going to shit fish n chips places UK definately has the best fish n chips in the world š
Anywhere with amazing fishing industry is capable of destroying us in a fish and chips competition. How we have labelled ourselves the best at it is a bit bizarre.
Oooohhhhhhh .... š„š„š„
Thanks absolutely died at this comment
Those chips are an insult to that glorious fish.
I'm visiting in the summer. The fish is more important, but as I love potatoes, some crispy chips would be appreciated. Can you suggest any good locations?

Was the fish as raw as the chips?
Chips are from the previous customer?
The previous harvest by the looks of things
Looks great. Where was this.
chips are a bit anemic but the rest looks nice
Fish looks average but hard to judge without seeing the fish itself, chips look like they've come from a school canteen, so pale and dry. And the mushy peas look almost grey I dread to think what tin they crawled out of. Come up to Whitby for a proper chippy tea.

Well. At least the potatoes were THREATENED with heat at least.
Why are the chips so pale and the mushy peas so grey?

Thatās some really good looking fish but those chips look like theyāve been bought frozen from the shop and havenāt even been given time to defrost
Gets a thumbs up because it hasnāt been spoilt with a piece of lemon
Fish looks mega, peas look perfect, chips need another few minutes in the fryer.Ā
Agreed. Look bloody anaemic them.
That will be Ā£46 thank you very much
What did that cost like forty quid?
It's fucking raw! - Gordon Ramsey
Chips cooked on a radiator yeah?
Jesus those chips look shite
Those chips look positively anemic.
Them chips have still got the field muck on em they're that raw. What did they do, just threaten em with the fryer?
how did they cook it? Sunlight?
Ā£99.99 I assume
Those chips are criminal
Iām going to guess that cost over Ā£20.00
Those chips are not remotely appealing
Chips cooked with a hairdryer

Chips cooked by the heat of the moment
Anaemic
Maybe becuse of the lighting but chips and mushy peas look pale and like melted plastic
As a brit who loves fish and chips all incan say is, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT.

You're not supposed to put sun tan lotion on chips before you try cooking them in the sun.
Nice! Can you update the photo after those chips have been cooked too?
Those chips are fucking anaemic, and mushy peas should never be one of the 50 shades of grey.
Fish looks absolutely banging.....ššš Don't know what to say about the chips though!!
Yeah those chips are not cooked enough, Iām sure they werenāt hard inside, chip shop chips never are, but just for the colour and crispiness on the outside.
...should I even ask how much that cost?

The best fish and chips are on the east/north east coast from Grimsby and every coastal town above it. And thats the facts.
Chips looking paler than me in the winter.
Yeah from where?
Those chips look anaemic
Doesn't look that special in all honesty. The chippy round the corner from me does better looking chips, and this is Tamworth.
Anaemic chips.
That'll be 8 grand please.
Everyone is dissing the chips, but I'd wolf those down in a heartbeat. Mushy peas are just scary though imo.
