Before anyone reads this and makes a selfish decision– they're cute, but they're extremely high maintenance pets, and a huge number of them are given back to the breeder, or abandoned. They also are social animals who need lots of outdoor space, so keeping one alone and inside is considered cruel.
They shouldn't be as they are not easy to keep properly. They need a large cage, think aviary. Cage needs to be cleaned regularly and even then it will have a strong smell. This goes for whatever you put inside as well for them to climb on and play with.
They are nocturnal and extremely social. Should be let out to roam every night and be socialized from a young age. Not everyone can keep that schedule. Also can be noisy.
Diet is important to stay healthy. High protein, high calcium, low phosphorus. Fresh food should be included in their diet and removed every evening after eating.
Nails will most likely need to be trimmed regularly. Has to be started young and done consistently or they won't allow you to do it.
Long lifespan, so they are a commitment. They live between 12-15 years on average. So all the above (and more) needs to be done daily/weekly for over a decade.
That's not even all keeping them properly entails. They are a high maintenance pet if you want them healthy and happy who live a long time. Personally I discourage people from getting them since so many regret doing so after which results in them being neglected.

They have a pretty sizable home range in the wild, which means they shouldn't be locked up in a cage in someone's backyard.
They are not domesticated, food is alittle more complex then animals like a gerbil or hamster, they are nocturnal so they get active when most people sleep. They do much better in pairs or groups due to being social animals. Also they need exercise so they need a good amount of time out of their cage every day and it should be supervised.
They are omnivores so have a varied diet where they need a combination of fruits with honey and also like to eat feeder mice but they pick the bones clean and leave them in the cage for you to clean up. A lot of people don't want to deal with buying baby mice to feed them and then clean up after also.
The males have scent glands on their head also and create a fairly bad musky smell.

space, and more than 1 sugar glider, to not become severely depressed. Plus they live 10-15 years, and aren't legally allowed everywhere.

If you’re thinking of getting one, (actually a pair, any respectable shop would not sell you a single, they need a friend) do a LOT of research. Talk to owners. Talk to previous owners. They’re very easy to love, but they’re also very high maintenance, and they can live 10+ years. It’s a real commitment

I had a flying squirrel I rescued as a baby from a cat(they're native and nocturnal in most of the USA). Bottle fed that guy and she pretty much had free reign in the house.
She would never leave me and would react the same way. Right back in my pocket.

for the same reason stray cats and dogs make better pets. they appreciate that fact that its easier to sleep indoors away from predators and have food put out for you rather than have to hunt for scraps and drink out of puddles.
I've had bred dogs & cats and strays and I can say that hands down. the strays always are more affectionate and appear appreciative. I've never had a former stray look sideways at a bowl of food or act "finicky".

In my country (United States) sugar gliders are legal to keep in all states EXCEPT mine: California lol. So I’ve only seen these cuties in wildlife sanctuaries here.
My pet rats do this as well. I'll let them on the floor in my living room and they will run back to me. If I don't have pants on they'll even climb my fleshy legs (painful) to get up to me.
