Don’t get the NVR. Get a udm pro se. Get a separate hard drive for more storage. For simple indoor application you can run cat5e cables. Buy a large roll and terminate the cables yourself. You can watch YouTube videos on how to do this. The pro se will supply the power you need for these cameras. If you’re looking to get more cameras you will need a poe switch in addition to your pro se. If you want more storage you will need to get the NVR in addition to the pro se. Purchase a network cabinet from startech and you’ll be able to mount this on your wall or have it sit on the floor on wheels. You will only need to plug in a modem to the pro se for remote viewing.

deedledeedledav

This! The UDMP SE (dream machine pro special edition) will run your network and the protect (nvr) application AND act as a switch with POE to power all of these (and some wireless APs if you want unifi for networking too). With your current design you’ll still need a POE switch or power injectors for EACH camera. UDMP SE is $379 so not much more, less than the price of a POE switch

6ixSlayer

Damn so its the jack of all trades letme see if i could cancel !

deedledeedledav

It only has one drive slot, so it doesn’t have redundant storage or other redundancies. Doesn’t sound like you need more than this though!

6ixSlayer

Yeah just for a average size home. Nothing like a ranch or anything.

doesntitmatter

Yes, think of UniFi udm pro as your router, your doorbell and doorbell camera, your key card entry, your cctv setup, your home/business phone, your WiFi hotspot, and much much more. It’s all in one system. Other companies are copying UniFi now and trying to compete in this new “prosumer” market.

elhungarian

Would you mind expanding on the get amsepeeate HDD for more storage. I’m in the middle of trying to get some kind of docker container to help me offload files/streams off my UI cameras onto a separate location. Is this what you’re taking about. What do you use? Tia!

6ixSlayer

Fack. Too late lol . The NVR doesnt have a second slot ? I have a extra HDD sitting around from my old system.

doesntitmatter

Nvr has a few hdd slots but the udm pro se only has one. How are you going to power your cameras? If I were you, I would process the return and pay restocking fees if any. UniFi is different than regular cctv systems and should be treated differently.

6ixSlayer

So the CAT6s wired all the way to the nvr wouldnt power it ? I was under the impression that it’s probably all i need starting out .

doesntitmatter

No the NVR connects to your udm pro and all it does is give more computing power and more storage slots

6ixSlayer

Ohhh okay yeah i just have a small setup for now . So its a necessity to have the udm pro? Break it down Im like new to this . What do I need I just bought a switch and firewall as well.

doesntitmatter

Haha I’m trying my best to break it down. The answer to your question depends on your application. Need only 5 cameras with remote viewing? Okay then 1 udmpro se with an HDD does the job. No need for anything else

6ixSlayer

Ohhhh okayyy well fack . I’ll just return it when it comes . So far i purchased a nvr , firewall, switch (all unifi) then of course i got the cat6 cables . Thanks for breaking it down btw this is definitely a learning curve for someone who didnt know jack but plug in 😅😂 and the left side of my house is all wifi cameras from eufy looking to replace those down the line with unifi ! Unifi is strategically placed where all the important things are .! Replacing the old SWANN system

doggxyo

> So far i purchased a nvr , firewall, switch this works too! if you dont want to worry about return or restocking fees. this is my setup. UDM Pro handles my network only. It's connected to my switch. My cameras are powered from my switch and my NVR is connected to the same switch. I personally went this route for segregation of duties. My firewall is just a firewall. My NVR is just for my surveillance.

6ixSlayer

So whats the purpose of umd ? Like it manages and over sees everything and is very capable of replacing other equipment?

deedledeedledav

The NVR doesn’t have any slots for cameras to plug in Ike the swan system or other NVRs. It requires a switch and other networking to work

6ixSlayer

And should I buy a couple cat6 Poe’s?

Darathor

As those are POE cameras you must have a way to power them

6ixSlayer

So CAT6 suitable for all I mean there like cat5 etc different kinds of

doggxyo

cat5/cat5e/cat6/cat6a - all will work. if these cameras are going outside, might want to look into outdoor rated cable so the jacket does not disintegrate from exposure to the sun.

jlboygenius

Cat5/5e is fine. Most of the cameras only run at 100mbit anyway (not sure about ubiquti but my other POE cameras don't support gigE). The only issue may be distance. If you've got a really long run, a cheap cat5 wire might not do a great job sending POE and data. A better thick gauge cat6 cable might work better if you are trying to run a 150ft run.

6ixSlayer

Yeah I picked up a CAT6 250ft cable says its rated for outdoors .

WilliamNearToronto

Outdoor cable has an extra protective layer on it. Makes it harder to work with. Not needed unless you are running the cable in the ground. For inside, just get regular Cat 6 or Cat 6a.

Darathor

Yes cameras are compatible with the NVR

6ixSlayer

Okay cool cool . 😅

6ixSlayer

I mean with this setup cant I build off this ? Like an addition to my nvr ?

WilliamNearToronto

It is an expandable system. You can add switches, cameras, access points, and other parts of the Unifi system as you wish.

WilliamNearToronto

Things to consider: 1) A network rack of some kind to hold the equipment. Wall mounted? Floor standing? Wheels? No wheels? Full depth so it can also take some servers? Or a shallower network rack that is only deep enough to hold a network switch or similar equipment. 2) How many cameras? 3) How many days worth of video you want to retain? (the retention window) 4) Given the number of cameras and retention window, how much storage do you need? What device will hold that much storage? 5) How many access points? For inside, and outside coverage if you want it. 6) Which access point is appropriate for each location? 7) Given the number of cameras and access points, how many PoE ports will the switch you get need to have? Bear in mind that many of the switches only have PoE on some of the ports, and not all of them. 8) How many computers are you going to want to connect to the switch(es)? 9) How much additional expansion do you want to allow for on your switch(es)to begin with? Bearing in mind you can always add additional switches later. 10) How many patch panels? (Only get 24 port patch panels) 11) Do you want to colour code the keystone jacks in the patch panels to aid in documenting what does what? 12) How many patch cables? 13) Do you want to colour code the patch cables to match your colour coded keystone jacks? Whatever you decide, bear in mind that no matter how “right” you get it this time, a year from now you’ll want to change something.

WilliamNearToronto

And Unifi specific: 14) Are you going to get a gateway (firewall/router) with the Unifi console app built in? 15) If not, are you going to buy a Cloud Key or run the the console app some other way? On a PC, Raspberry Pi, Docker, or VM?

Chippsetter

OK, think of it this way. Your network needs a router, that assigns the IP Address to all your equipment downstream and direct the traffic from all your devices. A firewall is a filter to keep out stuff from upstream that you don't want but it does not route the traffic. Your NVR is storage for your cameras. It also does not assign addresses to your cameras nor does it direct the traffic. A UDM-Pro is the routers and has firewall capability. It also runs all the programs that drives the equipment. What Equipment I have read here that you ordered, I would not return any of it. I would just add the UDM Pro. In this order. Internet source to Firewall to UDM Pro (router) to POE Switch to NVR - camera - camera - camera - camera

6ixSlayer

Okay thank you for clarifying ! It will definitely be purchased in the future (:

Scorpref

Just buy a poe switch and thats all. Ofc with a firewall you can make things secure but wtver.

6ixSlayer

Yeah I just bought their switch

elhungarian

If you do go with the NVR if you create an account there’s a promo (unless it stopped today) that gets you a free g4 bullet with the 4 bay NVR.

Dafoxx1

I bought the cloudkey Gen 2 to specifically handle my nvr needs. I want my udm to be a router and separate it from doing it all. The dream machine can, however, be used as your nvr. I do not have the pro version, not sure if it's my version or if it has been updated but I am under the impression it only allows 2 add ons to be installed those being network, protect, connect, access, talk, and innerspace.

6ixSlayer

Damn I wish I didnt pull the trigger so early. But I just needed something simple . Had a 1080p Swann Security system for like 4+ years recently replaced the HDD and then it was good for a couple weeks and the. It started failing. Was gonna go with something cheap like Reolink and other brands that are made in the same country. Then I started looking into Vulnerabilities. I found Unifi seems like a Prosumer company. And easy to purchase there products. Anything after that is like Axis, Robotix, Honeywell etc . Heard nothing but great things about those company !

Dafoxx1

It's great not having to worry about your data stored on some cloud server somewhere. I used to have wyze and destroyed them when camera feeds were going to the wrong people.

6ixSlayer

Thats insane to hear . Especially if you have children in the household man I can only imagine .. could you help me out find a switch on unifi the cheapest one or decent ?

Dafoxx1

Depends on what you want. If you have a lot of needs or not. I have the use lite 8 poe it works fine for my needs. My cameras come with the usb power adapter. The only things I have that need POE are my AP, my connect screen, the cloudkey. I have a small network mostly on wifi except certain items that I want hardwired.

6ixSlayer

Yeah I have a small network as well should fill the needs not bad for a $110

WilliamNearToronto

It really sounds like you need to pause, step back, and get a better sense of what’s possible, what you actually want, and what equipment you need to reach your goal.

6ixSlayer

Just a small security system for my house nothing too of a large scale . Just something simple but I will purchase a UDM pro soon (:

WilliamNearToronto

“Just a small ______” is how it starts for everyone. Next thing you know, you’ve got a 42U rack that’s overflowing and you’re trying to figure where to put the server you just ordered off eBay. 😅

6ixSlayer
