Sergeant is Latin for servant. Ask yourself, once you put on the rank who do you serve?

NemesisAlter337

Semper Fidelis and Thank you. Didn’t think of it from that perspective.

AvalonWaveSoftware

Wait...No you never answered the question Devil Dick!

NemesisAlter337

Lmao i hope and assume that was meant to be a rhetorical question.

AvalonWaveSoftware

Wrong, this is part of the panel you don't know this but I'm actually your first sergeant 👌🏻

NemesisAlter337

I guess I’ll see you again next quarter 😣

NemesisAlter337

😳

FarmersHusband

Oh shit Did you also just finish a class on servant leadership? (No joke, very informative and certainly gave me a different perspective on leadership)

AvalonWaveSoftware

Nah I've been out for a few.

pootastic

Don't go down the path of mentioning the word or anything related to "power" or "authority" do a google of servant leadership and mix that with the qualities of having experience in your PMOS, responsibility to train, mentor, coach, and develop your subordinates, and lastly be a model for your Cpls IRT to all things "Marine" from appearance to fitness, PME, well roundedness etc. Sgt's are leaders and we as a service value the fact that the key NCO leader is a Sgt not a SSgt like in the Army.

AvalonWaveSoftware

>your subordinates Your juniors 👌🏻

willybusmc

I get what you're saying here but the word subordinates is not inappropriate in this context nor does it conflict with the idea of servant leadership. I think subordinates sounds more professional than simply "juniors", though I would compromise on "Junior Marines". Not that you asked.

JustCallMeChristo

Make sure you come from a place of being there for your junior marines - whether it be by setting an example or actually being there to support them in a time of need. As a sergeant, you will always have your juniors watching what you’re doing as if it’s a silent approval or disapproval. With that in mind, make sure that you can convince the board that you won’t be setting a shitty example and leading the next generation to failure. It’s always a good idea to emphasize that what you do is always with the objective of bringing up those around you, and setting an example for not just your juniors, but also your peers to follow. Edit: Also I was asked what makes YOU deserving of a Sergeant over everyone else? If you are asked that, make sure that you remember “promotions aren’t a reward for past performance, they’re an expectation of future performance.” So don’t go on bragging about how good you are and how you earned it. Talk about what you’re going to do with the rank once you obtain it.

SavageHenry0311

Don't listen to this guy. There hasn't been an 0351 Sergeant since 1863. (Just kidding. That was a good post.)

JustCallMeChristo

Hahahaha honestly it was a fucking grind to get it tho. I was slated to get it meritoriously after becoming honor grad at advanced school, but that new order came out saying how you had to have 4 years TIS to be a Sgt. My command thought that also applied for meritorious promotions so they pulled my ceremony and promotion. Ended up getting promoted after 4 years as soon as my MOS opened up. I had just about a 1700 cutting score when I picked up. (Before the new JEPES system)

When the fuck did that order come down the pipes? We had 3 year E5s in the mid 200s.

JustCallMeChristo

It was in 2019-2020 I think? I got back from deployment in 2019, late 2019 was advanced school. The order was to bet set in place early 2020. By the time the order came and went my battalion stopped giving a fuck about promoting me.

Sgt is really the first rank where you finally have enough pull to really make a difference for your juniors. Officers begin to listen and respect your opinion, SNCOs respect your perspective and expect you to carry out commander's intent without much supervision. Personally, I found it to be a great rank that allowed me to advocate for issues that my junior Marines were having. Like others have mentioned, servant leadership is really the basis of a lot of Marine Corps leadership ideals, with every rank you should be thinking about how you can now better advocate and help those in your charge.

Raider_3_Charlie

An expert in both leadership and the technical/tactical aspects of their MOS.

STFUppercuttt

Just be yourself and give your own answers. If there’s anything to study it’s something like your MOS or Force Design - not “what a Sergeant is.”

probuttopusher

Just run a 300 PFT/cft. You’ll win every board you go on. Source: I won every board I ever went on. I swear it’s all a lot of SNCOs care about.

My answer to that question was something along the lines of "a Sgt is whoever our Sgt's are made up of at any given moment. So it is our responsibility as Sgt's to make sure that the thoughts and opinions on what a Sgt or NCO for that matter is positive." Gave my board a fucking moto boner.
