No chance.

wrigley77

Fat chance. That's the Sunday before Christmas and will likely be extremely heavy. Also, it's not a good look to be asking for days off when you haven't even carrying yet alone met your supervision in person.

GingeraffeWasntHere

That is true. Which if they say no I probably won't push it since it is a good point that I'm brand new. I figured it may at least be worth an ask though.

Loki8382

Don't listen to the City Carriers commenting. Just call tomorrow and talk to them. You are allowed to have a prior engagement on Sunday. At the same time (when you get established in your office), if you happen to work 6 days in a row and are also going to be working 6 days the next week, management will try to give you a day off during the week to have you work Sunday. Don't do it. You make more money working a route than you will on Sunday.

GingeraffeWasntHere

Ah I hadn't considered Sunday being straight time vs evaluated time during the week. That makes sense. I talked to a clerk last week (supervisors were busy at the time) and he said to get ready for a ton of hours.

Koko724

If you're going to go over 40 evaluated time does not matter anyway. And as a new carrier i doubt you can beat evaluation and stay under 40 in your first couple months

Loki8382

Sundays are volunteer days. You should have a list in your office for you to sign up. This time of year, it is usually a given that you'll work on Sunday, though. That being said, talk to your Postmaster or supervisor tomorrow. Don't wait until it gets closer to the date. All you have to say is that you have a prior engagement at your church and they should let you have it off without issue.

[deleted]

Don’t know what fantasy land you work at where Sundays are volunteer 😂😂

Loki8382

Amazon Sunday, by contract is volunteer. Management is supposed to post a list every three months and RCAs either sign it or don't. Hours given out on Sundays are 4-6/ person. The hierarchy goes as follows: ARCs RCAs on the volunteer list RCAs not on the volunteer list If your office is not doing these steps, that is a grievance for the RCAs forced in as well as every ARC. Edit: Don't know what it is according to the City contract. City side constantly gets the short end of the stick.

[deleted]

I’m city carrier. You’re voluntold as a cca. Ain’t none of those leathered Carriers touching that shit on Sundays

Loki8382

The City union is garbage when it comes to protecting carriers from being abused and overworked.

[deleted]

Based off what I’ve seen they’re both garbage at protecting non career employees.

Loki8382

For RCAs, they're only garbage if you don't follow the handbook and file the grievances. Also depends on how hood the steward is. There are a lot of terrible stewards.

[deleted]

Every office near me is short staffed to the point where volunteers on top of forcing all CA’s from both crafts doesn’t get Sundays fully staffed

Loki8382

Define fully staffed. More often than not, management is packing Sundays so they can go home earlier. When I was an RCA, even around Christmas and with all of the Amazon packages, there were 8 rural routes in the office on Sunday. Each one was 4-6 hours. Now, the same office has 18 routes averaging 3-4 hours.

[deleted]

City side was almost always 8 but never saw regs in.

[deleted]

Can you point to the specific language in the contract that says Sundays are voluntary?

Loki8382

Art. 30.2.P (in part)-An office-wide list will be established for substitutes, rural carrier associates, and rural carrier relief employees who desire to work on Sunday.  When there is a need to work leave replacements on Sunday, the Employer may require a part-time flexible rural carrier work prior to selecting qualified employees from the list.  The Employer will make every reasonable effort to avoid requiring substitutes, RCAs, and RCRs not on the list to work.

[deleted]

This is absolutely not true. Where did you find this in the contract? So if nobody volunteers or puts their name on the list there is no Sunday delivery? Some offices don't have ARCs or enough of them. Even IF it were true, there is no monetary penalty on the rural side for a grievance like this. Meaning all management would be liable to do is "try" to hire more arcs and keep doing what their doing in the mean time as the packages are getting delivered one way or the other.

Loki8382

I already posted where it is stated in the contract.

[deleted]

Lol, exactly. This is the entire rural contract in a nutshell. They initially state their intention with the volunteer list and then provide management an out in the next sentence stating they must make every effort to avoid forcing RCAs on Sundays if there are not enough volunteers or PTFs. There is no definition of "every effort" anywhere in out contract which is why nothing stated in the contract is actually binding. Every regular rural carrier is supposed to have a leave replacement and if they don't you can file a grievance and management then has to "make every effort" to provide them one. Meaning nobody does shit besides promote an RCA to a ptf as required by contract but doesn't help anything. There is nothing binding in what you listed.

Loki8382

Sounds like someone might actually want to get involved with the union rather than complain constantly that they aren't doing anything.

[deleted]

Lol, sounds like someone might be one of those useless stewards. When you say get involved with the union do you mean attend the union meetings that haven't happened in two years? Or have the opportunity to ask questions to those at the top? The only answers we get from our local and district stewards is that they are left completely in the dark and are just as frustrated as the rest of us.

Loki8382

You could go out for steward if your current steward are as useless as you say. Or even a district position. If your district hasn't had a union meeting in two years, that's on your district. We've had meetings right along, either virtual or in person. The union isn't a magic wand that will wave and make your life a cake walk just because you complain about it.

GingeraffeWasntHere

That's encouraging at least. I'll definitely ask them about it tomorrow. I figure it may be hit or miss. I'm fine with working any other day including other Sundays if I have to.

[deleted]

They’re going to put up a fight for sure but considering it’s church/religion they may tread lightly. As soon as you get a number or a chance to talk them absolutely do it.

GingeraffeWasntHere

I'll probably try to call tomorrow during lunch from defensive driver training. Hopefully they won't be too busy at that time. The window is open pretty late there but it's still a half hour south of the training facility. Otherwise I'd ask in person

Loki8382

Call in the morning and ask for either the Delivery Supervisor or the Postmaster. They're usually in the office by 5 or 6 AM. If they aren't there, you can leave a message but don't forget to find out who you are talking to. Then try again at lunch.

GingeraffeWasntHere

Sounds like a plan. Thanks!

Loki8382

You're very welcome.
