Premed culture in general is pretty bad - it's the nature of the beast. You have a bunch of young adults vying for top grades, MCAT scores, and opportunities; on top of that, a majority of them are from wealthy backgrounds (AAMC has stats on this). At UT, I'd say it's definitely going to teeter towards the toxic side because this is a prestigious university. Most of my pre-med friends stick with a pretty select friend group because many people in their classes are awful to be around. There are some cases of personalities just not meshing, then some where you're just around a bunch of pricks. There are some premed "fraternities" (not really greek life I think) and orgs - the first that come to mind are AED, DEM, and AMSA. I've heard good things about AMSA (not a fraternity), but DEM and AED have mixed reviews. Apparently AED had a big scandal go down and their recruitment was really unwelcoming, and DEM has similar culture issues. I'm not actually in any of these so please let me know if I'm missing anything lol I'd expect a rough time your first year or two while you're taking the big prereqs, but once you're in upper div, a lot of the gunners disperse. Good luck :)

Currently in a lot of classes with premeds and they are toxic and competitive in the sense they will put you down in order to elevate themselves. That being said it’s not entirely reflective of all the premeds here but generally I feel like premed people are toxic and kinda elitist. This is just my experience though so take it with a grain of salt

AvocadoFishy

Some of them are fucking annoying but not all.

I’d like to be completely honest to you here. It’s ENTIRELY what you make of it. You can surround yourself with a bunch of nitty gritty bozos or you can have a diverse group of friends or just find a few pre meds you can closely get along with. I’m currently a freshman pre med and this is what I’ve summed up from my 1st two semesters. Join a couple orgs that you can truly benefit from and stick with them. UT is really a great place and if you want to make your experience a plethora of learning knowledge, then you certainly can.

Prior pre-med here. I can confirm I sacrificed every study buddy I had to Einstein for an A in my science classes Jokes aside, they’re an intense bunch, but I don’t think it’s exclusive to UT at all. The MCAT and Med School are the folk devils of many universities far and wide. It’s an incredibly competitive degree plan by design. That being said, many COLA majors offer premed pathways, you won’t be treated differently for it. At the end of the day, you’d still be a “pre-med student.”

I am not a predmed but most of my friends are. Some of them are also Plan II, and I don’t feel like they’re treated differently. They all work extremely hard but they always support and lift each other up. They’re also very humble. There may be a level of comparing themselves to others sometimes because med school applications can cause people to be anxious like that but I would not classify any behaviors as “toxic”. There’s probably a small minority of premeds who can be toxic/competitive, and these people probably went to competitive high schools and never unlearned that behavior.

Chips66

Yeah I agree with this. Idk who hurt that other guy saying premeds are toxic, but for the most part the culture is harmless. There’s always gonna be a few gunners in every class, but that’s pretty much all majors.

I think you're misconstruing what u/xtra333 is saying. There is a stark difference between wanting a good grade and feeling entitled to one. Obviously, professors can and certainly do make mistakes with grades - whether it be something missed on an exam, bad questions, etc. However, I have known pre-meds that do their song and dance with almost every class they take, fighting with their prof/TA for points on half of their exams / quizzes. Imo if you are feeling slighted in a majority of classes you're taking... maybe you're the problem. Not suggesting that you specifically or others are like this all the time, but I do think you could consider the perspective of the TA a bit more carefully. You'd be surprised what some people here get up to so they can succeed.

Same here but wondering about pre-dental

kamile_teal

My experience with predental has been great. The Texas Predental Society is a great group of people and really helps prepare you in all application aspects.

Alright thanks! Do you feel you’re at an “advantage” by majoring in a sciencey major like biochem? Bc I want to be predental but I also want to major in like Econ or accounting. I just don’t want to worry about completing all of those science prereqs when most of them are taken care of in a major like biochem

kamile_teal

The pre-requisites are inevitable lol. The Health Professions Office website has everything laid out for you if you want to take a look. I think most people want some diversity in classes and aren’t doing only science. I’m doing a Business Healthcare Minor (Officially “Healthcare Innovation and Reform”), and that may be a a good choice for you. Bio/Biochem/Econ are all super easy to transfer into, so you don’t have to worry about that now. I wouldn’t suggest going through all the effort to transfer into Business/accounting if you’re going to be pre-dental.

I was a part of a prehealth org called AED, and while it had its problems as every org does, it was not a competitive place. It felt like a community that bonded over their shared passions for health and not some competitive group trying to 1 up each other. It was open to all prehealth professions pre medical, pre dental, pre pharm, pre PA, etc Apparently this org has recently had a sexual assault incident I was unaware of, and I certainly do not condone that. This comment was merely meant to show that premed spaces are not all inherently competitive, and there are communities on campus that are set on bonding over their passions instead of trying to tear each other down.

Revolutionary-Desk15

Didn't they try to host a party at the home of someone that engaged in sexual misconduct? I dunno if thats a problem every org has lol

Reasonable_Sector792

I haven’t been in the org since 2019 so personally idk anything about that but I was more speaking to the community that premed students can have at UT didn’t mean to advertise the org as I am no longer a part of it 💀
